mike nicco, and traffic reporter alexis smith this morning. you guys have been busy. i know there's a lot of problems on the roads already. >> i can barely keep up. >> because of that rain, mike. >> four dozen. >> yeah. right around 48, 49 incidents right now. >> that's crazy. just because people won't slow down and we've been telling them all week the heaviest of the rain is going to be this week, ponding and puddles and you know, what else can we do o? we'll just keep telling you. here's a look at live doppler 7. up across the north bay, the showers are more scattered but there's a little bit of a downpour right now into pen grieve and east bay is really getting pounded and that is all pulling away from the san ramon valley heading out towards discovery bay and the altamont pass. so, definitely going to be some tricky travels through there. here is what it looks like on the roof camera. you can see ponding on the roadways there in downtown. the showers heaviest now, becoming scattered to even isolated as we head through the 12 hour day planner. one of our more serious crashes this morning, a sig

alert in the san ramon a southbound 680, multi-car crash still blocking the three left lanes, a trailer came unhooked from the cab of a semi that was involved in this crash and that was hit by another truck 15 minutes ago. nowhere near clearing, some really heavy rain in that stretch too and a live look at those conditions, southbound 680 through walnut creek, you are crawling along. we have a couple rollover crashes, i'll talk about those coming up. that round of storms hitting the santa cruz mountains hard. >> not just the rain but also the bottom line. we're looking at the amount it's going to cost to fix problems caused by all the wet weather. abc7 news reporter matt keller live along highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. >> reporter: hi, reggie, i really wanted to show you how the rain will bounce off the window. that's why i'm inside my van right now. actually, i just wanted to stay out because it's nice and warm inside and you don't have to get wet out here because i want to tell everybody at home when you go outside, it is really uncomfortable, not just because of the rain, but because of the

wind. i'm going to have my photographer turn around and show you highway 17 because that's the real issue. you got to have both hands on your wheel this morning when you're driving because you can get pushed around a lot when you're out here on the road. winds gusting up to 40 miles per hour here in the santa cruz mountains. and yeah, downpours can be intense at times. and you really don't know what you're going to run into up here in the santa cruz mountains during and after a storm. glen arbor at newel creek is still closed this morning after a huge tree branch fell there yesterday afternoon. it's just one of many issues up in the mountains. the director of public works says more than $20 million in road dustin johnsamage has been the county is waiting for help. >> i've talked to a lot of different public works directors and they're saying $5 million, $10 million, and we're probably the worst in santa cruz, one of the worst counties. we just took a direct hit. >> reporter: be careful driving out there, whether you're in the santa cruz mountains or anywhere

else in the bay area, this is new video from the morning in redwood city. downpours will hit you and you add in the winds and it makes it very dangerous on the roads. i just checked the chp website. there are wires down in bolder creek so anywhere here in the mountains, you can come across something that happened overnight. you're not aware of it, maybe nobody's aware of it, and you're the first to come across it so be very, very careful out there. and you can always track the storm with our abc7 news app. we have live doppler 7 on the app and mike is always updating his information. you can always enable push alerts to get weather advisories right on your phone or tablet. more on this mystery. tonight, berkeley police will turn on the heaters in a fourplex for 24 hours. it's their effort to find out more about the death of a couple late last month. the bodies of valerie and roger morash and two cats were found in their units. residents are being asked to turn on their heaters all night

and being strongly urged to evacuate. the implication is the couple was killed by carbon monoxide poisoning. >> i'm nervous, i'm stressed out every day. i just really wish that the detective would return our calls. and communicate more with us as to what's going on. >> because this is not considered a mandatory eevacuation, neither the building owner nor the police department are going to be paying for the tenants' 24-hour relocation. as uc berkeley continues to clean up after violent protests, we are hearing from a woman who was attacked not once but two times. >> she got pepper sprayed while our reporter wayne freedman was interviewing her. and our camera was rolling. take a look. >> reporter: are you surprised? ma'am? ma'am? >> abc news spoke with yesterday and she got targeted again. >> hey hit all my friends with

whether to extend the president's travel ban. a seven-day restraining order was granted on sunday in a lawsuit full-timed by the aclu. its lawyers claim the ban against people from seven muslim majority countries is discriminatory and unconstitutional. the university of san francisco is asking president trump to allow its undocumented students to stay in the country. this according to "the examiner." there are about 100 of them on campus right now. they volunteered their status in exchange for enrollment under then president obama's deferred action for childhood arrivals or the d.r.e.a.m.ers program. school officials say the students made themselves voluntary targets in the wake of the president's immigration crackdown. this just in. texas took a strong stand against sanctuary cities. a senate panel there just passed a bill to withhold state money from local jurisdictions that don't hand over immigrants in custody for possible

all seems beautiful to me. dozens of problems on the roadways this morning because of the rain. and just people not slowing down enough. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. we're going to talk to alexis and mike about how weather is impacting your travel this morning in just a couple minutes. the parents of a san bruno woman killed in a hit-and-run are asking for help to find the driver. 29-year-old carly flynn was hit by a car on december 19. her parents say she was walking to starbucks like she did every day. she died of her injuries two days later. san bruno police held a news conference with her parents yesterday. they say she volunteered at the humane society and loved to

paint. >> carly was born here. raised here. lived her entire life here. she was the kindest, sweetest, most caring and thoughtful person you could ever want to meet. >> police believe flynn was hit by a white mid-size suv. they are hoping any witness could come forward with more information. crazy story out of southern california. a man on the run this morning after he threw a homemade explosive right into a cheesecake factory in pasadena and this happened at the height of the dinner rush. 6:00 p.m. last night. police say the man threw that device into the restaurant and then took off. the explosion, of course, scared the customers, but police say somehow no one got seriously hurt. parents, you have likely heard the warnings about those laundry pods and kids thinking they're toys or candy. now there is a new reason to keep them away from your kids. more and more toddlers are getting chemical burns in their eyes from the laundry detergent packets. experts say the number has spiked in cases of the packets breaking and then kids getting it squirted into their eyes or

the detergent getting on their hands and then rubbing their eyes. the number of cases has skyrocketed from less than 1% in 2012 to 26% in 2015. researchers say burns caused by the detergents are typically more severe than an we told you there are dozens of problems on the roadways because of the wet weather this morning. alexis, what are you seeing now. >> i have got all kinds of stuff going ton here. i was just trying to finish making my maps. i do have some new information in san ramon. southbound 680, at crow canyon, we had that major crash all morning in the three left lanes, that happened around 4:30 today but that cleared a few moments ago. however, i'm just hearing that i have a new collision in the far right lane so keeping a close eye on that. in the meantime, we have some residual delays about 15 miles an hour out of danville, little bit faster once you get closer to where that crash was in san ramon. bay bridge toll plaza definitely crawling here and it is a wet and windy commute. we do have high wind advisories for the bay bridge and the

richmond-san rafael bridge and mike you've been telling us all morning as well. it's going to continue through the morning rush hour. this came in a little bit later as we expected and came in with a little more punch. quarter of an inch the last six hours on the san mateo bridge so you can see it is wet and raining lightly there. here's a look at the big picture and you can see the yellows and the oranges really starting to arc their way into the eastern sections of the bay area and it's going to push into the central valley, probably by about 7:00 just like we talked about yesterday. and here's a look at the big picture. you can definitely see a little bit of a break developing for this weekend. tomorrow morning through most of sunday is going to be dry, but once we get to 8:00 sunday night, it opens up again about a third of an inch here in walnut creek as we look south on 680. moderate this morning to lighter showers and mild as we head into the afternoon hours. the weekend's bookend but that wet weather i just talked about and unsettled into next week. this storm is a 1 on our storm impact scale even though we have some downpours out there, the breezes aren't damaging and most

of the flooding has been standing water on the roads, no nudes or anything like that yet. it is moving into the sierra so that winter storm warning continues until 4:00 tomorrow morning. 4 to 12 inches from lake level to 7,000 feet. let's come back home and here you go at 7:00, you can see the yellows and oranges moving away and by noon, a lot of green out there. that will continue at 5:00 through 11:00 and then as we head overnight, just waves of light showers that will taper significantly during the weekend. so while i have the storm impact scale on sunday, saturday and sunday, that's because the heavy rains coming in sunday at 8:00 right as you're leaving your super bowl party. be prepared to get wet. speaking of all that snowfalling again in tahoe, here's alexis with the toyota tahoe report. basically, u.s. 50 is the only spot you're not going to have to chain up. 80, chains on, 89 is closed between squaw valley road and the 80 junction due to police

a federal judge is going to hold hearings to determine if everyone was treat fairly following that 2013 security breach. as part of the settlement, target has to establish a $10 million fund. customers can claim up to $10,000 if they can document losses that they haven't been reimbursed for. teachers in the fremont unified school district may be facing layoffs if officials can't figure out other ways to balance a $23 million budget shortfall. the money is not coming from the state. governor brown's preliminary budget reflects a reduction in overall general funding. fremont school officials have predicted the district would get over $260 more per student beginning in july but as the budget stands now, that number would shrink to $76 per student. the district remains optimistic. it says its still wants to hire 48 more teachers for the new year. >> time to ask fineny. linda has a question about mortgage rates. >> my question is, what do you think mortgage interest rates

it is 6:30 and another soggy commute for you on this friday. live doppler 7 shows you where the rain is now. >> live cameras up across the bay area just confirming that wet weather. take a look from the north bay to the south bay, we are seeing soaked, slick roads for the last day of the work weeg. let's get straight to meteorologist mike nicco. >> good morning, guys. there's still some yellow and orange but it's way down in the south bay. you can see around coyote and gilroy and then out in the extreme eastern parts of contra kos t costa and alameda counties. it's in the hills there and this the central valley so heading through those areas, there's going to be standing water from those downpours that just rolled through. there's still light rain behind this storm this and that will hang around for the better part of the morning commute. as you can see, the visibility definitely reduced. your 12 hour day planner, moderate to becoming light showers at 7:00 and then a chance of light showers all throughout the day just like we had yesterday. temperatures in the upper 50s to

near 606789 all right, alexis, give us the new number on the incidents you're following. you're not going to believe it. we are right around 50 earlier. we are up to 75 incidents on the board right now so that includes flooded roadways and collisions so we've got so many going right now. southbound 101 in san rafael, rollover collision, that is right around lincoln avenue, looks like our camera froze up but you get the idea. that is gridlocked approaching. traffic maps and show you that here. before you get to 580, heading into the san rafael area, you are backed up into marin, also just getting reports of yet another rollover collision. sounds like that driver is out of the vehicle okay. we'll take a look at some drive times coming up. with the rain mike has been tracking, we'll be keeping a close eye on the santa cruz mountains once again. >> our recent storms have been causing problems certainly and now we are learning the fix for them is going to be costly. abc7 news reporter matt keller is live along the highway 17 to

mudslide there near saratoga springs, we also have power lines down in the bolder creek area so you got to be careful when you head out there this morning but ironically, so far so good out here on highway 17, which is notorious for its wrecks. caltrans hopes to have a short-term fix for flooding problems along highway 37 near 101 in novato. here's what it looked like last month. the roadway under water with several cars trapped. our media partner, the marin independe "independent journal," reports kail is working on an $8 million plan to replace the pavement and drainage pipes. it could happen later this year. another idea is turning 37 into a toll road so drivers can help pay for the improvements. we'll see how popular that one is. >> the wet weather brought down this trooe in marin county. it got caught on power lines there. right now, nicasio valley road is back open after it was closed off overnight. this has been a problem area in

go forward with the olympic ceremony today despite the attack. she said all big cities in the world are under threat, including budapest and los angeles, which is competing against, so that decision on that host city will be made in september but today's events could certainly be a factor. new this morning, betsy devos has cleared a major hurdle to become the next education secretary. republican senators voted to cut off debate, allowing devos to skip more opposition and get confirmation vote next week. devos is a school choice activist and has been promoting charter schools for 20 years. she's fiercely opposed by labor unions who believe she's trying to take apart public education. president trump is tweeting once again. he writes, professional anarchists, thugs, and paid protesters are proving the point of the millions of people who voted to make america great again. yesterday, the president slammed uc berkeley for the protests and threatened to pull federal

funding from the school. and a man arrested in ma melee is scheduled to be arraigned this morning. 19-year-old edward kuo faces charges for blocking officers who were trying to move that skirmish along. police arrested two other men, 28-year-old devonta gaskin of oakland and 22-year-old sean sus of san francisco that assaulted students. campus police say none of the three arrest second-degred is a. solidarity events are being held today, using #weareallamerica. the islamic center on ruby avenue is holding a rally at noon. organizers hope the rallies nationwide show solidarity with muslim communities. 6:36 and happening today, mexican drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman is slated to

appear in person in federal court in new york. he was initially set to appear via video conference but the judge reversed that after his lawyer insissed that his absence would give the impression he is too dangerous to appear in court. gauzeman is charged with running a massive drug trafficking operation, laundering billions of dollars and overseeing many murders and kidnappings. u.s. prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty in order for him to be extradited here from mexico. a group of moekal newspapers is threatening to sue the city of oakland over the ghost fire ship investigation. the deadliest fire in the city's history. according to the bay area news group, oakland has refused to release police and fire documents that might explain how the unpermitted warehouse was allowed to hold tenants and events. the bay area news group is giving oakland until next friday to turn over the records or face a lawsuit. the organization is one of our media partners. new this morning in the east bay, take a look at your screen. concord police are searching for this woman.

she is accused of threatening walgreens workers with a baseball bat after they tried to stop her from shoplifting. it happened at the walgreens on monument boulevard. investigators are hoping you'll recognize her from this surveillance photo and give them a call. if you live or work in oakland, you're going to hear emergency sirens blaring across the city today. do not be alarmed. the city will be holding a full system test of its upgraded emergency sirens. the first test begins at noon. there's going to be a slow wail that will sound from all sirens for 90 seconds. it will be followed about 15 minutes later by another 90-second slow wail. the city's work to upgrade the system is scheduled to be complete bid the end of april. if you're still deciding what to wear this morning, do what we did thanks to natasha for reminding me this morning to wear red. the reason it is national wear red day to help raise awareness about heart disease among women so all of us are doing it. we hope you join us too and also hope that you find out today what your risk is for heart disease, heart disease and

santa rosa and vallejo to oakland and san jose at 61. that's pretty close to where we are right now. tonight's going to be another mild one. you can see some scattered green out there, light showers developing once again. and about 49 in livermore and santa rosa. to about 53 in oakland. so, you've got to deal with this, this morning, but i've also got rain every day in my accuweather 7 day forecast. we'll take a look at the storm impact scale for each and every day so you know what to expect. that's next. herer's alexis. i'll start you off with good news, mike. we saw this crash in san rafael clear so this is a rollover collision we had on southbound 101 right around lincoln avenue and that has been there for about two hours at this point. they were in the right lane. they have fully cleared that now as you can see. so that is starting to unwind. flip over to the traffic maps, we have another problem in the north bay. just getting word that we've got a full closure of highway 29 at napa junction road and this is due to flooding. so we just got this alert into the news room. you can see that purple there filling in on our traffic flows. as far as i know, this is both

northbound and southbound so both directions and that is a flood prone area and we knew that was definitely a possibility this morning. so far, 37 is fully open in the novato area. in the meantime, we have another crash in the east bay, westbound 580 at lakeshore, we've got a crash blocking the two left lanes so that is very heavy as you approach lake merit, 880 on the northbound side looking pretty good for an alternate right now. if you're traveling southbound 880, we have yet another rollover collision right around 16. that's not causing too much of a backup yet. westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, 40 minutes for you, about 17 across the bay bridge, high wind advisory for you across the bay bridge this morning along with richmond-san rafael and southbound 101, san francisco to sfo, one of the few drive times that is in the green. you are still hanging on at about 12 minutes. we'll take a closer look at the south bay coming up next. tesla ceo elon musk says he is meeting with president trump today despite heavy criticism. the reason whooes refusing to cancel his appointment. and big buzz about a beer coming to the bay area today if coming to the bay area today if you're hoping to get

you know, mike, it's only 6:48 in the morning, i have a feeling you are ready to go. >> i am. and you know, we had a rodent yesterday tell us, why didn't pliny the younger just tell us every year they roll that out so i can forecast rain. i'd much rather have the beer than the rodent. that's what it boils down to. good morning, everybody. about 1/3 inch of rain on the san mateo bridge. everything's moving so slowly there. it's not quite as bad as some of the other lesser traveled bridges as far as standing water but it is definitely wet. winds have tapered just a little bit, gusting to 29 at sfo, 24 at half moon bay, gusts up to 25 miles per hour earlier. east/west bridges, you got to watch out. it's wet and the wind is hitting you cross waiz. we've transitioned in the moderate rain to light rain, same thing in the east bay and up in the north bay, we've got some scattered showers and it's close to mt. st. helena, maybe a little san francisco, six-hour total about 1/3 of an inch.

showers today, heaviest, we've had them this morning. longer periods of dry weather tomorrow and sunday and then unsettled, rain in the forecast all seven days. today's storm impact scale is 1. we're getting out of the brief morning downpours and breezy conditions and transferring to scattered showers already. from 7:00 to noon, and then from noon to 5:00, still a lot of green on the map. if you're heading out this evening, take an umbrella. you may need it. isolated shower here and there. 8:00 tomorrow morning, pretty wet and then just some isolated showers through saturday evening and look how dry it gets sunday morning, but then we get to 8:00, just as the super bowl ends, and you're about to head on out, another wave of some heavy downpours starts to roll in. that will linger through monday's morning commute as if it won't be bad enough after the super bowl to try to get out of bed. tuesday, wednesday, and thursday, they're all 1s, though, light on our storm impact scale. alexis? you have to go to bed as soon as the halftime show is done like i'm going to do and

you'll be okay getting up on monday morning. right now, not so much. lot of issues to get to. i want to take you back to napa county right now. full closure of highway 29. it is only on that northbound side so i was able to confirm that. and this is at napa junction. this is due to flooding that is a flood-prone area so we have had some heavy rain push through here in morning and that is going to cause some headaches. you can see that red on the traffic flows. eastbound 80 at travis boulevard, if you are heading to sacramento, three left lanes blocked due to a crash involving a tractor-trailer. just got a new crash in westbound 80 before davis, sounds like we have at least a couple lanes down there as well. quick check of the bay bridge toll plaza. we've had those metering lights on since about 5:27 this morning, little break in the rain for now but you can see the sheen on that pavement and it is slow getting through there once you make it to the bay bridge, you're doing better. more drive times, 680, # 2 minutes, southbound 101 recovering from that crash in san rafael, and northbound 17, just slight delays there between
