we can't wait to hear from her. t.j. is there. we've got jesse palmer there. all covered. >> amy doesn't need a ticket. she's on the field. it's okay. >> she's all set. >> we got a lot of news to get to as well starting with that breaking news from paris. a man with a machete was shot down at the louvre. that's one of the world's most popular museums on lockdown this morning. abc's lama hasan has all the latest. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning. heart-stopping moments in the heart of paris when a machete wielding man yelling allahu akbar lunged at four soldiers this morning. the attacker was shot and taken into custody. french authorities are now opening a terror investigation. [ sirens ] >> reporter: a massive police presence at the louvre after a man wearing two backpacks rushed towards a group of soldiers and guards attempting to attack one with a machete while yelling allahu akbar. the soldier fired back with five shots wounding the man. authorities now have him in custody. according to police, the man attacked after being told he couldn't enter the underground

shopping area with his bags. the museum, a popular tourist attraction home to the world famous "mona lisa" on lockdown. at least a thousand tourists inside the louvre at the time of the incident. they were hustled into safe areas. many posting messages like this on social media, we've all been locked inside the louvre there are hundreds of police vans. another tweeting, tourists told to sit on the ground in locked halls inside the louvre. france has been on edge following a series of horrific terror attacks. in november 2015, 130 people were killed after a series of coordinated attacks in the capital. and in july last year, a terrorist drove a cargo truck through a crowd of people celebrating bastille day in nice killing 84. president trump tweeting a new radical islamic terrorist has just attacked a museum in paris. france on edge again.

get smart u.s. robin. george. >> we'll stay on top of this story for everyone. now, though, to the latest on president trump talking tough to america's allies and adversaries saying this morning in a tweet that iran is, quote, playing with fire. let's go to our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega for more on all that. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. as you say that tough talk is on twitter this morning but white house officials say president trump could be taking tough action gen iran as soon as today. the new donald trump white house this morning is turning up the heat on an old enemy, president trump considering imposing new sanctions on iran, a move that could happen as soon as today. >> mr. president, is military action off the table in iran? >> nothing is off the table. >> reporter: on wednesday his national security adviser ratcheting up the pressure after iran tested a ballistic missile. >> we are officially putting iran on notice. >> reporter: at the national prayer breakfast president trump giving the evangelicals who

helped propel him to the white house a gift so many had wanted, a promise to, quote, destroy a law that bars tax-exempt churches or religious leaders from endorsing political candidates. >> freedom of religion is a sacred right, but it also is a right under threat all around us. >> reporter: the president also addressing that strained phone call with the leader of australia, one of america's closest allies brushing off the controversy. >> when you hear about the tough phone calls i'm having, don't worry about it. just don't worry about it. they're tough. we have to be tough. it's time we're going to be a little tough, folks. >> reporter: top republicans now trying to mend fences. >> i called the australian ambassador to reinforce to him our commitment to australia and our relationship. >> reporter: and down under during a concert in melbourne, even bruce springsteen played diplomat. >> all right, we stand before you, embarrassed americans tonight. >> reporter: the boss also adding a bit of political theater to his show.

♪ don't want to hang up ♪ oh, no >> reporter: the white house in damage control. the ambassador to australia here at the white house for a meeting with reince priebus and steve bannon where we're told they conveyed to him, the president's deep admiration for the australian people. robin. >> cecilia, and now the white house is issuing a warning to israel which is, of course, another close u.s. ally. >> reporter: yeah, exactly. a warning to israel that expanding settlements in the west bank may not be helpful in achieving middle east peace. some say a step away from what the trump administration has said. president trump is scheduled to meet with prime minister benjamin netanyahu later this month. >> let's bring in martha raddatz for more on this. martha, let's start with iran. we have the latest tweet from the president this morning, iran playing with fire. after michael flynn says they are on notice, so the rhetoric

has been ratcheted up, the sanctions likely to come as early as today. i think the big question is what difference will those sanctions make? >> well, given his tweet about iran playing with fire and that he is not going to be as, quote, kind as obama, the sanctions may be just a first step unless iran cuts out these missile tests. george, i don't think donald trump is looking to go to war with iran. but he wants them to knock it off and if the sanctions don't work, who knows what is next? >> then they'll get into a debate over who is breaking that nuclear deal. somewhat of a surprise to see the administration speaking out about settlements in israel given how critical they were of president obama. >> reporter: exactly. israel already this morning is spinning this to say it is not so bad since the statement by the u.s. is that the settlements may be unhelpful to peace and, in fact, it is far more subtle than statements from the obama administration and israel still considers trump a bigger friend than obama. >> and on russia, another bit of a turn as well.

a couple of weeks ago the president was saying that maybe he would do a deal with russia where he would release sanctions in return for some nuclear reductions. now his administration taking a harder line because of russia's actions in the ukraine. >> reporter: exactly, fighting has escalated between the russian back troops and the government in ukraine and the new u.s. ambassador to the u.n. nikki haley took that on saying we do want to better our relations with russia, however, the dire situation in eastern ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of russian actions. this escalation of violence must stop. so while the president plays good cop, the administration is laying down the law in certain places. >> you see other cabinet members assert themselves as well. the pentagon defense secretary james mattis in south korea. >> reporter: we're just going around the world here, george. mattis in japan and south korea said we stand with our allies and any attack on our allies will be defeated. i think, george, there is some worldwide confusion about what trump is doing but i think what we have seen over these two

weeks is a president who is ticking through his campaign promises, one by one, and that overall the promise to his supporters is to recapture the sense of american nationalism. >> that is the goal. okay, martha, thanks very much. >> george, as we know president trump also facing that showdown on capitol hill. he has more unconfirmed cabinet nominees at the two-week mark than all former u.s. presidents combined so let's go to our congressional correspondent mary bruce on capitol hill with the latest. good morning, mary. >> reporter: good morning, robin. well, tom price, trump's pick for hhs secretary continues to be dogged by concerns about conflicts of interest. the latest this morning, a "usa today" report that he purchased $15,000 of stock in a health care company before introducing legislation that would have helped that same company. now, price responded to previous concerns about his stock saying they were made by an outside investor without his knowledge. but that is not stopped democrats from trying to delay his confirmation over these concerns. they even boycotted a committee vote earlier this week but to no

avail price is still headed for confirmation. >> yes, a lot of concern there and there's also seems to be a pretty close call with betsy devos, of course, the nominee for secretary of education. >> reporter: yeah, robin, betsy devos this morning is right on the brink. senators are here bright and early. they just voted on a measure to move forward with her nomination but there's been a big push up here to try and block her. you've been able to hear the phones ringing off the hook. senators on both sides of the aisle have been swamped with calls from constituents voicing concerns about devos but it doesn't seem it's going to work. ultimately they counted the vote and even though two republicans said they will oppose her it appears they will have the votes to get her confirmed. that vote coming up on monday. >> let's get analysis now of another packed week from our political team, matthew dowd and kristen soltis-anderson and, kristen, let me begin with you. you have this week, it begins with the uproar over the executive order over this immigration ban and the president's pick of a supreme court pick pretty widely praised by republicans over the course

of the next couple of days then diplomatic back and forth and say republicans are in whiplash mode. >> there are moments when donald trump's presidency seems like it is approaching something like a normal presidency and then within just a matter of hours things will have completely changed and this, i think, has republicans in washington especially folks on capitol hill wondering what to do next, there are moments when the president takes actions that are easy to praise right in line with what republicans would expect from a republican president and then there will be moments when things like controversy over australia come up and folks on the hill find themselves having to perhaps answer questions about issues that they never could have imagined would have come across their desk. >> everyone, matthew dowd, waits every morning for the president's new twitter feed. several every morning before 7:00 a.m. as martha said he's trying to create this impression of promises kept but overall what kind of impression is he making with the public?

>> well, i think, george, that's the problem. he started with a record low of job approval numbers, the lowest any president ever in office and interesting he set another record which is the fastest president to over 50% disapproval. the previous record was bill clinton, it took 573 days to hit 50% disapproval. donald trump hit it in eight days. and i think part of the problem on super bowl weekend if you think about job approval in a football way, job approval is like the offensive line, right, if job approval is weak, that means you're much more likely to get hurried, disrupted and sacked and the other thing it does with weak job approval numbers it emboldens the defense and the defense is much more likely to blitz which is what the democrats are doing right now. >> yes, the blitz is in the streets, kristen. >> you're right. there are a lot of folks who are discovering civic engagement is something that's kind of fun, makes them feel like they're able to do something about what they're seeing in washington that they're so frustrated about

so the capitol switchboard lighting up with people calling in to voice their opinion on some of these cabinet picks, people are really getting engaged and vocal. about how they feel about this administration. >> matthew, the president at times have used those protests, particularly the berkeley protests and what difference will it make to republicans as long as in their districts they hold firm behind the president. >> that's the million dollar question. donald trump right now even with low overall approval numbers has approval numbers of 85% or 90% among republicans and in republicans' districts. the question is when that starts to deteriorate that's when donald trump has a serious problem in congress. >> okay, matthew dowd, kristen soltis-anderson, thanks very much. >> since matt brought up the super bowl let's turn to the big game. super bowl li, kicking off, as you know, in houston on sunday. the stars of the team, the stage, well, we're getting a clue how they're all preparing for sunday's showdown. look who got to houston. let's go to amy who is there for

and talk about ratings and attack arnold schwarzenegger. i don't think it was surprising in the least. he was introduced by mark burnett. he's obsessed with this, of course, he was going to make this joke. >> and then this morning he says, you know, arnold schwarzenegger, a bad governor as well. now, the white house pretty much has given up on trying to do anything about the twitter, trying to make the best of it. the president clearly going to go out every single day. any attempts inside the white house to at least try to channel it? >> reporter: look, i actually -- i've spoken to senior white house officials about not just this but the whole phenomenon of trump going out there and going in ten different directions. this is the chaos theory of government. and they tell me that it is actually working. they like it. they want to flood the zone. they're doing all the initiatives that they're doing in terms of substance. he goes out and does this stuff and it becomes -- it exhausts his opponents and makes it harder for anybody to concentrate on any one given thing he is doing, which could

boat that caused it to sink. it was a stunning discovery. a young man found drifting on a life raft missing for seven days. nathan carman had gone fishing with his mother linda. but as he's pulled aboard the chinese freighter that spotted him, she is nowhere to be found. >> mom and i two people, myself and my mom were fishing at block canyon and there was a funny noise in the engine compartment. >> reporter: two days later when nathan arrives in boston questions are waiting for him at the dock. what happened to his mom? and was it really an accident? nathan who has been diagnosed with asperger's syndrome pleads for privacy. >> my request is just to be allowed to mourn naturally. >> reporter: but then he decides to grant us an exclusive interview. he insists his mother's disappearance was an accident. >> i did not see or hear my mom. >> reporter: he says their boat was taking on water and it sank so fast he simply lost sight of

her. >> i love my mother, present tense. i love my mother. >> reporter: police are not convinced. his mother was worth millions and he's her sole heir. they executed a search want on nathan's home looking for evidence of reckless endangerment. boat owner mike iozzi told us and police that he saw nathan hours before the trip doing something highly suspicious. >> it caught my eye when i saw him leaning over the back and drilling a hole, two holes in the transom of the boat. >> reporter: as we discuss the allegations he reaches his breaking point. >> all i can say is what happened. i can't -- if other people want to -- >> i'm just asking you to defend yourself against these people who are saying you did something to your boat that would make it sink. >> that's not true. the only way that i can speak out against them is to say what actually happened and that's what i've been trying to do. >> okay.

another thing that's happened since we last got together, police searched your mom's home. >> yeah. >> did you know anything about that? >> we're done for this evening, period. we're done. >> we're not trading to make you uncomfortable. we're trying to give you an opportunity to answer some of these allegations. >> we're done here this evening. >> so nathan stormed out of our interview but about 20 minutes later he came back and answered more questions. he explained what he was doing to the boat and he talked about another mysterious death in his family, nathan's grandfather, a multimillionaire real estate developer was murdered in his bedroom three years ago and we learned nathan is still a suspect. >> why do police believe that? >> he's never been charged but in a 2014 search warrant police say his whereabouts on the night of the murder are unaccounted for and they have another list of evidence and they tried to arrest him and a judge wouldn't sign the arrest warrant. >> so much more here.

advertising holds up a mirror to what's going on in the world and all the divisiveness is what is going on in the world right now. i think it's a brilliant ad and think they took the high road. how do you argue with that? they're not talking about walls or muslim bans but, hey, this country, even our company is built on the fundamental principles of our doors are open. i think it's beautiful and don't see the controversy in it and i think they really dance the line because they're a major, major corporation. >> do you think they saw it coming and did they want it? >> i think as i said a company of this size and magnitude has got to play to both blue and red states obviously, but i do think if you look at that message just by itself it is the most american message you could probably have. i think they're wrapped in red, white and blue although it's against a charged politically climate. >> 30-second ad is going for -- >> $5 million bucks. >> you want to make sure -- it's buzzy but it can work against you. >> yeah, if you're an unknown.

we'll talk more about that, any controversy is good. >> i want to bring that back to t.j. there was one ad you talk about right now that the nfl and fox decided did cross the line. >> yeah, as donny just said the budweiser ad is not talking about walls, this one directly was, so they had to go back and edit their ad. 84 lumber this pennsylvania company shows this story of a spanish-speaking mother and her young daughter getting up in the morning going out on an arduous journey and get to the u.s./mexico border and face a wall. fox nfl made them edit that. you won't see the wall in the broadcast. they will then direct you to online to see the end of that ad. >> have you ever seen anything like this donny? >> no, once again for a company -- we've never mentioned lumber 84 in our lives for on "good morning america," that's a win/win for them, once again set against the backdrop everybody is talking about it's a brilliant move. >> all the ads are serious or politically driven. we have some humorous ones and

some that pull at the heartstrings so, t.j., what is the emerging theme for many of these commercials this year. >> just like you said they continue to pull at the heartstrings. some are funny. this audi ad got me because it shows a father cheering on his daughter who is in a go-kart race. she's beating other kids, beating all the boys and this dad is talking -- kind of talking about what do i tell my daughter about her -- her dad being more valuable than mom and it's an ad about pay equal and audi is making no qualms about it and this skittles ad i am sure you will appreciate. >> katie, katie, katie. >> mm-mm. mm-mm. >> katie, katie. >> mm-mm. >> katie, katie. >> mm-mm. >> katie. >> mm-mm. >> katie. >> mm-mm.

abc's lama hasan joining us with the very latest this morning. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning, paula. the attack unfolding in the heart of paris after police say a man carrying two backpacks brandished a machete and shouted allahu akbar while lunging at a group of security guards on patrol. one of the soldiers fired back with five shots wounding the attacker. authorities now have him in custody. at least a thousand tourists were inside the louvre at the time. they were hustled into safe areas. french police say no explosives were found in the two backpacks and authorities are now launching a terror investigation. paula. >> what a frightening incident, llama, thank you for your reporting. the white house is expected to announce new sanctions against iran as early as today. president trump says he is not ruling out any options in response to iran test-firing a ballistic missile. he accuses the iranians of, quote, playing with fire, meantime, the administration is now warning israel that building new settlements may not be helpful for the peace process and the new u.s. ambassador to the united nations, nikki haley

has condemned russia for, quote, aggressive actions in ukraine. president trump is expected to sign two executive actions to scale back regulations in the financial industry. he is ordering a review of the dodd/frank rules passed after the financial crisis and is set to roll back a regulation affecting financial advisers. and in other news for you this morning, police in southern california are searching for a man who threw an explosive device into a crowded restaurant in pasadena. smoke filled the cheesecake factory as people ran outside, however, nobody was injured. and mexican drug lord el chapo is appearing before a judge in new york city. his motorcade arriving this morning. prosecutors are demanding that he turn over $14 billion in assets. it's all happening this morning. and a new warning for parents about laundry detergent pods. researchers have found that since those pods have hit the market, eye burns in children have skyrocketed by 3,000%. the pods now account for more

than a quarter of all such eye injuries. the industry recently adopted tougher safety standards, however, parents are urging to people to keep them out of children's reach. and finally, how about this one for you on a friday. tying the knot has never been so expensive. the average cost of a wedding now topping $35,000. a survey by theknot.com looked at everything from food to photos and they found the increasing cost is mostly because of novelty items such as fireworks, celebrity entertainers and even cigar rolling stations. now, 35 grand, that is the national average but, of course, here in new york city everything is more expensive. the average wedding costs $78,000. but, you guys, can we go back to the cigar rolling station? have you ever been to a wedding with a cigar rolling station? >> i have not. >> i want to go. >> and those celebrity entertainers get you every single time. >> last weekend i went to a pop-up wedding in key west. >> pop-up. >> they were supposed to get married in may.

ladies is officially returning to tv, the one and only carol burnett. >> wow. >> has been given the green light, as we say in the biz, a pilot order for a sitcom called "household name." deadline is reporting this and amy poehler will executive produce it, it's a comedy, of course, burnett will hit the screen as a leading lady who decides to sell her home, her grand home to a young, happy family for a very good price. there is, of course, a caveat. one condition, she gets to live in it until she passes away. so, a little bonus there when you buy the house which will, of course, make for a great comedy. michael saltzman is also on board as writer, executive producer. he's got phenomenal credits, "mad men," "the naked truth" and one of our favorites, "murphy brown" executive producer. and if the comedy is a go, i'm happy to say it will air right here on abc. this. michael saltzman, when he was a young writer trying to make his way in the biz got a meeting with carol burnett. she was so impressed with his samples and what he had to say about the business, his passion, she wrote him a check, doesn't say for how much and said, i want you to just do something with it. write a play, write a movie. write something because i believe in you. she said she's always believed in giving young upstarts a chance and you know what, he wrote this. >> that's fantastic. >> for her. so a really great story. let's root for this. carol burnett, we love you. come on back. [ applause ] and more career news, love this story, indianapolis colts punter pat mcafee, he is punting a $2.75 million salary to pursue his dream of making people laugh. the nfl player turned comedian will be joining a sports satire website called barstool sports heading up their brand-new indianapolis bureau made especially for him. this is obviously a brave decision.

pat is only 29 years old. he has the best punting record in the nfl last season. he's walking away from quite a lot. he also, though, did have three knee surgeries in the past four years and he said he was just starting to feel like he had to follow his dream. he isn't taking this departure lightly. he wrote a heartfelt note to his twitter followers where he expressed his gratitude to the people of indianapolis and excitement for the future and said, do not be afraid to follow your dreams. it won't be his first foray. he tried stand-up. he is funny and active on twitter if you want to check him out and he is well aware that he could take the hardest hits he's ever taken in his career. we're wishing you the best of luck. >> good for him. >> don't read your twitter. >> right. write it but don't read it. george taught me that many years ago and it is a very smart rule. >> but he's only 29. he's got a great career. >> 29 years old. that's early to walk away, but you have to follow your dream. a great lesson for all of us on this tgif. it has been 20 years since ron goldman's family won a civil judgment against o.j. simpson for the killing of their son ron and now the family is speaking out about that loss and their message for o.j. as he faces possible release from prison this year. matt gutman spoke with the family. >> reporter: when you hear the name o.j., what goes through your mind? >> disgust. >> he stabbed two people to death. that's kind of where i leave it. >> reporter: this morning kim goldman is revealing why she wrote these letters to o.j. simpson in the hopes of meeting him in a nevada prison where he was serving time for charges including armed robbery. >> i thought if i could cozy up to him a little bit, i had no interest in talking to him when

i got there. i had nothing to say. i had nothing to ask. it was purely visual. >> you just needed to see him. >> behind bar. >> behind bars. >> we, the jury, in the above entitled action find the defendant, orenthal j. simpson, not guilty in the crime of murder. >> reporter: in 1995 he was acquitted of murdering ron goldman and nicole brown simpson. two years later, a civil trial found simpson liable for wrongful death in the double murder. the years have ticked away but what remains for the goldmans is the pain. >> a lot of things hard but ron's dreams that didn't come to fruition, sharing his life with kim because they were best buddies. >> reporter: the goldmans who own the rights to "if i did it," the controversial book authored by simpson says moving on is made nearly impossible with the fascination of all things o.j. projects like "is o.j. innocent?" >> the missing evidence. >> reporter: "american crime story." >> i did not commit this crime.
