just weeks before christmas. >> whoever did this is obviously not well and they're capable of anything. so, yeah, i want them off the streets for -- obviously for my own sake and for the sake of every other innocent person out there. >> reporter: ashley is the oldest daughter of andrea st. john found murdered inside the garage of her castro valley home. a home set on fire after the 59-year-old mother and grandmother was killed. >> we're looking at the sophistication of this criminal. >> reporter: investigators have enlisted the help of an fbi profiler and are reaching out to other police agencies. >> are there any other crimes similar to andrea's that we can connect this person to? was this the first time they have done this or is this something they have done before. >> reporter: detectives are holding back specific details of how st. john was killed, but they have released surveillance video showing a person of interest walking near her groveway home the night of december 12th. he may have been driving a late model silver toyota corolla like

this one. >> nothing is going to bring your mom back. >> right. >> so what's your hope at this point? >> get the person off the streets. >> reporter: anyone with information about this person of interest or st. john's murder is asked to contact alameda county sheriff. in castro valley, laura anthony, abc 7 news. one person was injured and more than a dozen out of their homes today after a two-alarm fire in san francisco's chinatown neighborhood. >> it began on stockton street just before 8:00 this morning. wayne freedman joins us live from the corner of stockman and pacific. wayne? >> reporter: finally after hours of closure, the corner of pacific and stockton street is open today. there are still some police barricades. you're looking at the remains of the businesses that were underneath this residence and all the stuff they had to pull out of it. now behind me some of the people who lived inside trying to get their stuff. this fire smoldered for hours today because of four-inch thick insulation underneath the building that just would not go out.

ask any firefighter, he or she will tell you that no two blazes will ever be the same. like people, they have moods, whims and personalities. what erupted in the basement of this building in chinatown this morning, no different with its own unique challenges. >> any time you go down a staircase into a fire situation, your routes of exit are limited. zero visibility going down, refrigerators, freezers, boxes of produce, other materials in storage, floating around in the water down there. >> reporter: how it began remains unknown. the range of human difficulties that have come with it, still hard to calculate. enough that san francisco mayor ed lee visited the scene. >> i'm always concerned, whether it's a holiday or whatnot that these fires luckily no one was hurt, but they do do damage, especially during the new year's. >> reporter: at street level, several businesses have already met with the city to qualify for emergency funds.

wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> wayne, thank you. we'll see you at 6:00. two children escaped a burning home this morning. the flames broke out on galvin street around 5:40. the oakland fire department says a woman and children were inside but they all made it out all right. a popular road into lake tahoe is still shut down after an armed man who held a woman hostage was shot and killed by highway patrol officers. it happened this morning around 3:00 near squaw valley not far from olympic valley. the placer county sheriff says chp officers followed the man from tahoe city believing he was too drunk to drive. officers used a spike strip to force the man to pull over. when he did, officers say he pointed a gun at his female passenger as well as officers and passing motorists. officers shot and killed the suspect after he started walking to a nearby home. his name hasn't been released. authorities are still on the hunt for a man who threw a homemade explosive device into a

crowded restaurant in pasadena last night. the man opened the front door of the cheesecake factory, lit the device and tossed it inside. it landed under a table, exploded and filled the restaurant with smoke, causing a chaotic scene as customers ran for the door. no one was hurt. investigators say it appears to be a really bad prank. one person was hurt this afternoon when a car smashed into a muni train. this happened on third and 16th streets. that's right where the warriors new arena is being built in mission bay. the driver of a black mercedes turned left right in front of an oncoming light rail vehicle. the driver suffered minor injuries. the investigation caused major delays on the t third muni line. turning now to our weather, many students at uc berkeley seemed to be umbrella ready for the rain today. others, though, had to depend on hoodies are just risk getting a little damp. >> have a live look now. my goodness, that is rather for

boding. >> i am umbrella ready and we all should be the next several days. here's a look at live doppler 7. we have pockets of light rain and scattered showers mainly over the higher terrain, but make no mistake there are wet spots in the roadways and that pattern will continue through the evening commute. the storm that we have ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. it will produce scattered showers. isolated thunderstorms are possible, though not likely, and we'll see breezy conditions. here's the forecast animation taking us it to 9:00 tonight at which point we'll see pockets of light rain and showers. that pattern will continue through the overnight hours and through the day tomorrow as well. so be prepared for rain just about any time, just about anywhere going through tomorrow evening. but notice that on sunday morning about 8:00 or so we start to get a bit of a break that will continue most of the day sunday before we get a wave of steadier, heavier rain coming in sunday night. our chances of rain over the next seven days, well, there is a chance, a substantial chance

every one of the next seven days. i'll give you a closer look at that in just a few minutes. larry. sky 7 was over the great highway this morning as cars dealt with flooding. you can see the big puddle on the oceanside of the highway there. the road was briefly closed from southbound lincoln to slope, that's the section that often floods. much further south residents in the santa cruz mountains are seeing a number of storm-related problems. as matt keller tells us, officials are taking steps to prevent more flooding in the area. >> reporter: the rain and wind created a mess for the morning commute. at one point abc 7's morning traffic reporter was tracking 78 incidents on the road. >> that includes flooded roadways and collisions. we've got so many going right now. >> reporter: one of them was here on highway 9 in saratoga just east of sanborn road. a tree fell across highway 9 around 6:00 a.m. blocking traffic in both directions for several hours.

this came after a huge tree branch went down across glen arbor in the santa cruz mountains yesterday afternoon. water was rushing, including in saratoga creek. it's a beautiful sight. officials don't expect any creeks to reach flood stages with the storm. >> i brought my oldest umbrella. >> reporter: people like betsy mcgowan had to strategize going out to get their morning coffee. >> it's already broken. >> reporter: others looked at it as a chance to turn their group run into an adventure. >> rain or shine, we go. >> reporter: releases at reservoirs will continue as needed. they will make sure other parts don't flood. matt keller, abc 7 news. make other plans if you were thinking of heading over the panoramic highway in marin county. crews are working to remove this tree that fell across the roadway today. the marin public works department tweeted this photo.

majority countries. the order blocks that ban nationwide for now. washington and minnesota sued the federal government saying the order causes significant harm to residents and is a mandate for discrimination. things are beginning to get back to normal at uc berkeley. abc 7 news is at the mlk junior student union as a power washer stripped off the paint that was left behind after this week's protest. students were able to stop in at the amazon pickup store. demonstrators were angry that controversial breitbart editor milo yiannopoulos was going to take the stage. president trump once again tweeted about the violence at uc berkeley. this morning he tweeted and took a different stance saying professional anarchists, thugs and paid protesters are proving the point of the millions of people who voted to make america great again. yesterday mr. trump blamed the university for cancelling the

way into san francisco's neiman marcus location. the luxury department store announced today they will no longer be carrying ivanka trump's precious jewelry line on their website. nordstrom also dropping the brand's shoes and clothing, saying based on the brand's performance, we've decided not to buy it for this season. there are just five ivanka trump items left on the nordstrom website, all marked down 40%. >> people can vote with their votes, but they can also vote with their pocketbook, and there's no question that that's what people are doing. >> in my mind there's a very clear connection between the boycott and nordstrom's decision. >> reporter: shannon is talking about a boycott she helped start in october, using #grabyourwallet to discourage retailers from doing business with the trump family. >> from october 11th through yesterday, the hash tag had been seen on twitter over 600 million times. from what i've seen throughout this movement, people simply, especially women, don't want to

see the name trump while they're shopping. >> reporter: but not everyone agrees that ivanka trump's brand should suffer political consequences. >> i actually like her shoes. i own some myself. not necessarily a big fan of her dad, but i think she's great. >> reporter: on social media, many people telling nordstrom, they'll in longer be shopping at their stores because they dumped ivanka trump and they're looking for alternatives like macy's, which in san francisco's union square store still had a display of ivanka trump's shoes today. a spokesperson for the ivanka trump brand did say nordstrom purchased their apparel for spring. kate lawson, abc 7 news. so do boycotts work? sometimes, but it's usually the negative buzz from customers that compels companies to act. one example, starbucks. the seattle coffee giant was targeted when it announced it would hire 10,000 refugees after president trump's executive order banning travel. so far the boycott hasn't had much of an impact but chile's

sys its quarterly results were affected when an african-american veteran's meal was taken away from him. the chain saw drops for two weeks after that incident. san francisco transportation officials are considering a new idea to protect the bicyclists on the embarcadero. >> this is an area that's seeing a huge jump in the number of people riding bikes. kristen sze is here with more. >> well, ama and larry, the san francisco embarcadero, popular with both tourists and locals, maybe too popular. in the past five years, 102 people were injured here walking or bicycling. our media partner, hood line reports that's why san francisco's municipal transportation agency is dropping up plans for a safer embarcadero including better protection than just the painted green lanes. this is an agency rendering of one of the concepts. that would be a buffer to physically separate bicyclists

from car traffic. in fact you can have two directions of bicyclist traffic if you want to. the buffer could be planters, trees, poles or a raised platform. all options are on the table. we talk with cyclists and the project manager. >> i've been many times on my bike where somebody will pull in without noticing a bicyclist or opening a door to get out of the car. >> today unfortunately the embarcadero is on the city's high injury network, which are 12% of city streets that make up 70% of the collisions. >> now, you can find protected bike lanes in a few locations like telegraph avenue in oakland. the barrier in this case is parked cars separating bikes and vehicles. now, the mta wants you to know the embarcadero project is in the early design stages and there will be opportunities for public input so we'll keep you posted. >> all right, thank you. probably not a lot of great bike riding weather this weekend, but there is a window of opportunity, spencer christian, allowing you to get to your

forecast features scattered showers tomorrow. a stronger storm comes in sunday evening after a bit of a dry break during the day and we'll have a rainy pattern all the way through next week. tonight's storm and tomorrow's storm ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. it will produce scattered showers, maybe an isolated thunderstorm or two. here's the animation starting at 5:00 going through the evening and morning hours and into noon tomorrow we'll see the same pattern of pockets of light rain and scattered showers. that will continue into sunday and then we get a bit of a break for much of the day on sunday. another wave of steadier, heavier rain comes in. the heaviest rain in that system will probably occur after 9:00 sunday night. that continues into monday morning so it's going to be a wet commute or morning commute on monday. as for this current system we projected by 5:00 tomorrow afternoon rainfall totals will generally be less than a 10th of an inch except in the north bay where we'll see up to a third of an inch or more. as we look at tonight's lows

and here are the stories making headlines now at 4:30. breaking news. just a half hour ago washington state's attorney general announced a federal judge in seattle has effectively shut down president trump's executive order banning muslims from seven countries from entering the u.s. the order blocks the ban, declaring it unconstitutional, until the trump administration responds to the order. it comes after a lawsuit brought by washington's attorney general and joined by the state of minnesota. so far there is no response from the president. coming up at 5:00, abc 7 news reporter david louie shows us how even the youngest showed support for muslims in the south bay just before that order was signed. right now president trump is in florida for his first getaway as president. he's spending the weekend at his private mar-a-lago club just two weeks into his presidency. abc 7 news reporter stephanie ramos is live in washington, d.c. stephanie, the retreat comes after a busy day at the white house. >> reporter: it definitely was a busy day. it's been a busy last couple of

weeks. but today president trump, he began the process to get rid of an obama era financial rule. he watered down one already in place and he backed up some of the tough talk against iran. president trump at the end of his second week in office is slapping iran with a fresh set of sanctions. the trump administration warning iran after they tested a ballistic missile. >> today the u.s. sanctioned 25 individuals and entities that provide support to iran's ballistic missile program and the islamic revolutionary force. >> reporter: iran admits it conducted a missile test but didn't violate either united nations resolutions or iran's nuclear deal with world powers. this new action should knuns th individuals and companies from doing any business in the u.s. or with americans. >> today we're signing core principles for regulating the united states financial system. it doesn't get much bigger than that, right? >> reporter: trump in the oval office signing more executive

orders, this time on finance regulation. >> this is a big day. >> reporter: trump calling for a crackdown of the dodd-frank act crafted by the obama administration and passed by congress in response to the 2008 financial crisis. the order, an effort to loosen rules on banks and other major financial companies. >> despite all this overreaching, dodd-frank did not address the causes of the financial crisis. >> reporter: the white house now embracing unemployment numbers from the labor department, a reversal from the campaign trail days. >> 227,000 jobs. great spirit in the country right now. so we're very happy about that. i think that it's going to continue big league. we're bringing back jobs. >> reporter: and president trump with his new iran sanctions in place and thousands of visas being revoked to comply with mr. trump's immigration order, mr. trump is spending the weekend in florida. he's there right now. he is set to sit down for a

traditional super bowl pregame interview from mar-a-lago. >> stephanie, the white house is now playing defense on the president's immigration order. the temporary ban on travelers from seven majoriy muslim countries is now the subject of multiple lawsuits. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: that's right, multiple states are suing over trump's immigration order. washington state, massachusetts, new york, virginia, and those who are suing say that the order violates religious freedom under the u.s. constitution. now, of the nearly 60,000 visas that have been revoked, thousands of people are already here. they will not be deported, but if they leave the country, they won't be able to come back in. ama. >> stephanie ramos, thank you. and the state department says less than 60,000 foreigners from seven countries named in mr. trump's travel ban have had their visas provisionally cancelled and that number contradicts one put forth by the lawyer from the justice department. that lawyer said 100,000 visas

were revoked. the state department said that included expired as well as diplomatic visas. france's president is calling today's attack outside paris' famous louvre museum terrorist in nature. a man carrying a machete attacked officers. the man wasn't able to seriously injure anyone before being shot. notorious mexican drug lord joaquin "el chapo" guzman returned to court today under extremely tight security. authorities closed the brooklyn bridge and blocked streets as they transported guzman to federal court this morning. inside the hearing, defense attorneys urged the judge to loosen the 59-year-old's very strict jail conditions which allow him contact with nobody except his legal team. >> we think it's ridiculous that the government expects mr.

guzman to choose a counsel when he's locked up 23 hours a day. he can only be visited by two of our paralegals and the head of our office. >> the judge rejected the defense team's demands. guzman has pleaded not guilty to charges of running a massive drug trafficking operation that laundered billions of dollars and oversaw murders and kidnappings. today the u.s. navy officially decommissioned an aircraft carrier that called the bay area home for almost 25 years. thousands gathered in newport news, virginia, for today's ceremony honoring the uss enterprise. the ship, known as big e, was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier when commissioned in 1961. the enterprise called the alameda naval air station home from 1965 to 1989. it infamously ran aground in the bay in 1983. the ship served in nearly every major conflict to take place during its history. a san francisco police officer fighting to get back to work after nearly being killed

now to the amazing recovery of a san francisco police officer who narrowly escaped death in the line of duty. officer kevin downs was shot in the head responding to a 911 call. now officer downs is speaking with abc 7 news reporter vic lee, an interview you'll see only on 7. >> reporter: on this warm, tranquil day, officer kevin downs and his wife, corie, enjoy a pleasant walk in their north bay neighborhood. something he could not do just months before. >> i'm doing well. i'm doing well. the mobility is back. >> reporter: today not only is the 25-year-old officer almost fully recovered, downs is at peace with what happened last fall. the night of october 14th, a 406 call went out over police scanners. the call every cop fears. 406, officer down. >> it just makes your heart skip a beat. when you hear 406, officer down, you never know how bad it is. >> reporter: on this night, it

was officer kevin downs' partner making the call when downs was shot in the head. >> what do you remember about that night? >> i remember everything. >> reporter: downs was one of several officers responding to a 911 call at lake shore plaza. a man who appeared to be mentally disturbed was causing trouble at a store. he was later identified as nicholas mcwerter. >> it was so dark and happened so quick, i didn't see him pull his arm up. as he ran by me, he fired three shots. >> reporter: one of them struck downs in the head. his immediate reaction? >> why did he do that? that's not fair. i was just going to tackle him. >> reporter: police cornered him and he was shot and mortally wounded. the officer spent six days in intensive care. he was lucky to be alive. downs' doctor said the bullet narrowly missed a major artery in his brain by one sent meter, the diameter of a fingertip. >> he said if it hit there, i

would have only had a couple minutes. >> reporter: but the head wound affected his motor skills. >> i had no movement in my riot leg at all. the right arm was very clumsy. >> reporter: downs has a tie tan january plate over his skull. he's gone through a long rehab. >> there was definitely someone with a greater power watching me that night. i'm glad it was me that was shot. i wouldn't have wanted to see my brother in that position. >> reporter: downs' recovery has been remarkable. he's back working with his nonprofit ranching vets, which he and his wife started in college, to help veterans cope with civilian life. downs even helped swear in police union president marty halloran who supported him through his recovery. >> the ultimate goal is to return to full duty and go back to the streets. >> do you feel you're almost there? >> i feel i'm already there, yeah. >> reporter: vic lee, abc 7 news. we'll start with live

doppler 7 showing light rain and scattered showers, widely scattered over the bay area except in some of the higher elevations. over in the sacramento valley, a wind advisory remains in effect until 10:00 tonight. gusts will reach from 40 to 45 miles per hour, downed trees and power outages are possible. a little farther to our east over in the sierra, a winter storm warning is in effect until 4:00 tomorrow morning. we expect 6 to 12 inches of snow above the 6,000 foot level. back to the bay area here, over the next seven days we're expecting a lot of rain. this is our rainfall projection for the seven-day period. nearly 4 inches will fall for santa rosa and virtually every location will see between 1 and 1.5 inches and some places up in the north bay even more than that. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. every single day we are ranking storm intensity 1 on the storm impact scale. storms of light intensity producing enough rain to add to our totals and produce measurable amounts.

it's been two weeks in office for president trump an it's been a frenetic pace of action and headlines. now he's off to florida for his first weekend getaway. the president arrived in florida about two hours ago. karen travers is at the white house with a look back at the first two weeks. >> reporter: the second full workweek is in the books for the trump administration, and it finished in a flurry of activity. sanctions in retaliation for iran's recent ballistic missile test and an executive order to review the dodd-frank financial overhaul. the white house boasting that it's wrapped up more than 60 significant actions in the first two weeks, but this weekend, a quick trip to sunny florida for mr. trump, who makes his first
