well, the showers continue in the bay area this weekend. here's what it looked like earlier this morning in san francisco on lombard street. how long will the rain last this first weekend of february and how much should we expect? good morning, everybody. saturday, february 4, i'm cornell barnard in for chris nguyen. let's start with a quick look at the weather. it's wet out there. here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning to you, cornell. you'll need those wipers on and off throughout the morning hours and the showers are expected to dissipate by this afternoon. that's just today, though. let's take a look at live doppler 7 and you'll notice that we do have returns right over the heart of the bay and as we go in closer, you can see around san pablo bay, also north beach, tiburon, san rafael and into berkeley.

further to the north, dylan beach and if you're headed up to the sierra nevada, still a winter weather advisory. so wet down the peninsula, and as we go into the east bay, noticing some returns on the higher elevations. santa clara, bolder creek, looking wet this morning. it's a 1 on our storm impact scale. we'll see scattered showers this morning and looking at about 1/3 inch or less. we'll forecast the rest of your weekend coming up. happening today in san francisco, thousands of people expected to take part in a protest against president trump's travel ban. as first reported by our partners at hoodline, organizers say the protests will target racist and exclusionary executive orders. that's a quote. president trump signed the order last friday, banning travel from seven predominantly muslim countries into the u.s. this is video from last week's protest at sfo. nearly 10,000 people say they will attend the protest. they plan to gather at 3:00 at civic center plaza.

a celebrations in confusion this morning after a federal judge blocked president trump's travel ban. the decision means visa holders from those seven countries can fly to the u.s. once again. airlines have been given the go-ahead to let those travelers take off. a federal judge in washington issued a temporary restraining order blocking the order after that state's attorney general filed a request, calling the ban harmful to state's residents and economies. >> the law is a powerful thing. it has the ability to hold everybody accountable to it, and that includes the president of the united states. >> white house press secretary sean spicer issued this statement, saying, "at the earliest possible time, the department of justice intends to file an emergency stay of this order and defend the executive order of the president which we believe is lawful and appropriate." abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has a reaction to this decision. >> the volunteer lawyers who have been here over a week, this is a night of celebration.

>> reporter: julia wilson has been helping coordinate volunteers at the airport since last weekend when massive crowds turned out to protest president trump's executive order. the federal restraining order has had immediate implications. wilson showed me the e-mails she's been exchanging with a syrian refugee in turkey. >> this is his message. i feel strong with your support and it's such a dream that i will finally see my wife and my son. >> reporter: the white house quickly vowed to challenge the judge's restraining order, by legal analysts say it's not clear how long it may take to work itself out in court. >> i'm not sure whether they would hold a hearing. they would probably ask for briefs to be filed very quickly. so, i would think this order would stay in place at least over the weekend. >> reporter: the federal restraining order is just one of a flurry of legal actions filed. a stanford freshman is part of a class action lawsuit filed by the aclu to overturn the order. she's been unsure about her

future here. >> if this is going to further affect my studies here at stanford because i'm from yemen. >> reporter: yemen is one of the primarily muslim countries listed in trump's travel ban. a central california man and his 12-year-old daughter are scheduled to fly to san francisco tomorrow after being stranded for a week because of the executive order. amed ali, a u.s. citizen went to bring his daughter back. she has a u.s. visa and a yemeni passport. sfo officials directed the airline to let them board the plane headed to sfo tomorrow afternoon. there is some confusion in the muslim community this morning following approxima following the ruling. >> reporter: this gathering at the muslim community center in santa clara was intended to help immigrants navigate the new travel restrictions but before it began, word came of the

temporary restraining order. >> we're all excited and confused at the same time. >> reporter: hesham hussain has dual citizenship and is supposed to go on a business trip in two weeks. >> even though i hold a u.s. passport but my family are kind of worried that i might get held up in the airport for longer hours and they do not want to think about this possibility so more likely i will cancel the trip. >> reporter: an immigration attorney says he's right to be cautious despite the judge's order. >> it's not that the judicial order is unclear. it's that it's unclear whether that will be honored. and unclear whether or not that will be properly enforced, whether because of genuine misunderstanding or some other confusion or deliberate diso bans of the order. >> reporter: idiris abdi is a somali refugee and a u.s. citizen. his mother is still in the refugee ecamp. abdi has been saving money to bring her here. >> people are devastated. we lost hope. it took a while but now we're feeling good. >> reporter: hope tempered by

hey, good morning, coming back with a live picture from the abc7 exploratorium cam at pier 15. kind of hard to see. we've got the transamerican pyramid there. light rain this morning and it is definitely warmer out there. lisa argen's going to tell you when the rain will return, how much we're going to get, coming up in a few minutes. authorities are on the hunt for a man who threw a homemade explosive device into a crowded restaurant in pasadena thursday night. police say the man opened the front door of the cheesecake factory, lit the device and tossed it inside. it landed under a table,

exploded, and filled the restaurant with smoke, causing a chaotic scene for sure as customers ran for the door. nobody was hurt. investigators say it appears to be a really bad prank. one of the largest opium seizures ever in california just happened here in the bay area. police arrested jasvir singh and his wife donna santo after a three-month investigation. yesterday, abc7 news was in mountain view where detectives say singh was possessing and selling opium poppy pods out of his apartment. police found 4,000 pounds, that's worth $400,000. they say the couple imported large quantities from overseas then ground it into a fine powder to sell to people who turned it into a potent illegal tea and neighbors can't believe it. >> wow. opium. weird. very strange. >> well, officers also found $30,000 in cash inside singh's home. a tiny device is providing a

big advantage for patients fighting breast cancer, and as abc7's cheryl jennings discovered, it's leading doctors right not target area. >> how's your range of motion been? >> reporter: last year, tests revealed this woman was a victim of breast cancer. >> we decided to do a little bit more exploration, only to discover that i had breast cancer in both breasts. >> reporter: dr. ann is a surgeon at california pacific medical center in san francisco, laid out a plan to remove the tumors and mask the damage. >> so, trying to refill the cavity where the tumor came out so you don't leave a defect and get better cosmetic outcomes. >> reporter: but during that breast reconstruction, dr. pellet also implanted sue with a powerful weapon to help doctors knock out any remaining cancer. the device known as a biosorb is a spring-like scaffold with tiny titanium clips that act as a kind of post-cancer gps system.

>> you can see this plastic looking part is the part that's going to dissolve over time and these titanium clupz here are going to remain in. >> reporter: first, she removes the tumor from the breast, then places the orb into the cavity area. when the breast heals and the scaffold dissolveds, the titanium clips are locked into place and after surgery, they will provide a visible target for radiologists. >> the inner circle represents the marker that's in place and that's the area we have to treat. >> reporter: dr. john lee says the clips form a clear outline, allowing his team to more precisely control the powerful doses of radiation. >> it allows us to focus the radiation exactly at where the tumor originally was but at the same time avoid the structures like the heart, the lungs, the ribs that are next to it that might be damaged. >> reporter: in sue's case, the target imaging was so clear, she was actually able to skip

follow-up scans and begin her radiation earlier, leading to the results she's hoped for. >> i am now cancer free. absolutely. >> reporter: in san francisco, cheryl jennings, abc7 news. well, doctors say the pins are also clearly visible on follow-up mammograms and stay anchored to the tumor area even as patients age and their bodies change. well, a little rain is not keeping beer fans away from being the first to taste pliny the younger this year. they lined up early yesterday morning at the russian river brew pub in santa rosa for a taste of the triple ipa known for its big, hoppy flavor. crowds started growing over the last decade as pliny the younger ranked near the top of beer lists around the world. the first person to arrive thursday night to line up say it's worth the wait. >> having to get in line at 11:30 last night. so, been here since then. cold, wet, experience is well worth it but the taste of that

beer is fantastic. >> the brew pub seats about 175 coming with the new location. russian river is opening a $30 million brewery and brew pub just down the road in windsor some time next year. one of the main roads to stinson beach in marin county is open again this morning. crews worked all day to remove this tree that fell across panoramic highway yesterday. the marin public works department tweeted this photo. the highway was closed between the throckmorton fire station and the pantol campground parking lot, that's a two and a half mile stretch. good morning to you. we're still looking at a few scattered light showers and here's live doppler 7 where a lot of this is falling under the radar beam as mist and drizzle so as we go in closer to the heart of the bay, you notice around san pablo here, 580, richmond, looking at wet weather over toward berkeley and today they have the lunar new year new year celebration, the parade

from 12:00 to 4:00 and you should see dry conditions but right now in the north bay, dylan beach, you've got some wet weather up through heelsburg and finally highway 1 through pacifica, the peninsula, little bit wet, and down around the santa cruz mountains. in the east bay, just the higher elevations looking at a little bit of moisture in the sierra nevada, it's rain right now, blue canyon, 37 degrees so we're looking at truckee in the mid 30s and with that the winter storm warning has been dropped but we have a winter weather advisory until 10:00 tonight. heavy snow showers and we see wind gusts up to 45 miles an hour so a lot of the resorts were closed yesterday due to those gusty wind. so hopefully maybe some better conditions, although that rain at lake level isn't great. low 50s right now in the south bay. it's been muggy and humid, 54, san francisco, and san carlos, looking at 51 in danville, so temperatures definitely on the mild side and that has brought the snow level up.

we'll see some showers on and off today. also with some sun in the afternoon, the next main storm arrives tomorrow night and we'll see some heavier rain in the early evening hours right around, maybe, halftime super bowl and the raining pattern will last through next week. so the system today, it really is going to be drying out throughout the afternoon so still just a 1 on our storm impact scale. scattered light showers, 1/3 inch mainly in the north bay. elsewhere, you won't see much at all. the winds will be breezy at times. notice a couple waves of showers here and there, 9:00, then again by noontime, 3:00, pretty isolated and throughout the evening hours tonight and into tomorrow, it will be dry but then by 3:00, we have some showers in the north bay and about 5:00, perhaps, into marin county, but by 7:00, we've got heavier showers just offshore and some downpours headed our way by 8:00, lasting right through the overnight hours so between later on today and late

tomorrow, we're expecting another 1/2 inch to 1 inch with that push coming in sunday night. so highs today ranging from upper 50s to low 60s with most of the shower activity this morning and will be dissipating throughout the afternoon. if you're headed up to the mountains, we've got some rain, maybe mixed with snow, low to mid 40s for today and tomorrow in the accuweather 7 day forecast. so there's not going to be a lot today, but check it out, download the app and you can track the rain because we're going to see rain just about each and every day. downpour late tomorrow and then again on tuesday looking pretty wet. we'll have to watch that system and they look light at this point, but you know, the storm track is just pushing a bit to the north so if it sags to the south, we could see much more rain throughout the week. >> all week long, huh? all right. just ahead, pursuing equality. this year's black history month celebration

side." oakland strong is the new message at the oakland museum of california. abc7 news told you about the shoes worn by steph curry to honor those who died in the ghost ship fire. now you can see those sneaks. they were auctioned off for the firefighters relief fund, helping to raise more than $500,000 for the victims of the fire. one pair says ghost ship. the other, oakland strong. the unnamed donor let the museum display a third pair of curry's shoes once worn in the playoffs. abc7 news took over the exploratorium last night, enjoying the museum's high-tech cocktail hour. it's called science of cocktails. there are demonstrations on -- of how adult beverages are distilled and brewed and fermented. proceeds go to help pay for kids' education programs at the exploratorium. black history month kicked off yesterday at san francisco city hall. hundreds of people filled the

good morning, and we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. hey, lisa. >> hey, cornell. we certainly have some wet roadways. the showers will be with us on and off this morning. as we look at live doppler 7 right now, you can see a smattering over the bay and as we go into san pablo bay right over the water there but we'll call it light rain. richmond, up through hercules, kensington and a little rain for emeryville for you. it's wet in marin county, dylan beach, healdsburg, shower activity. san francisco, you're wet but not a lot of rain. you can see higher elevations around the altamont pass looking at a downpour. and the santa cruz mountains. so this will bring anywhere from about 2/10 inch with breezy

winds this morning and we'll talk about a bit of a break before more downpours head our way late tomorrow. a federal judge in washington state has issued a nationwide restraining order on president trump's travel ban that halts parts of the executive order signed last week by mr. trump. in an interview with cnn last night, washington's attorney general says he's prepared for the case to go all the way to the supreme court. it comes the same day the president announced a new crackdown over the iranian government's recent ballistic missile test. >> reporter: the president landing in florida for a weekend get away at his winter white house mar-a-lago but not before making good on that threat to put iran on notice. >> they're not behaving. >> reporter: the white house issuing new sanctions going directly after people and entities tied to iran's ballistic missile program. we asked is this just the beginning or should americans be ready for the possibility of

military action with iran? is that on the table? >> i've said this before. the president's been very clear. he doesn't take options off the table but he understands the impact of something like that. >> reporter: in a statement, tehran saying it will respond proportionally and iran's missile program is the undeniable and inalienable right. the white house is playing defense on the president's controversial extreme vetting executive ordering temporarily banning travelers from seven muslim majority countries. it is now the subject of multiple lawsuits. a federal judge in washington state has temporarily halted the order nationwide. what exactly that means still unclear at this hour but the state attorney general declaring victory. >> judge robarts' decision effective immediately puts a halt to president trump's unconstitutional and unlawful executive order. i want to repeat that.

it puts a stop to it immediately nationwide. >> reporter: no word on whether the white house will appeal. the justice department saying in a statement it looks forward to reviewing the court's written order and will determine next steps and in a virginia court, a justice department attorney says more than 100,000 visas have been revoked. >> i think you could almost hear the collective gasp in the courtroom. >> reporter: the state department said the number is actually about 60,000. but amid the fallout from images like these, families reunited after being detained at airports across the country, the white house initially focused on a much smaller number. >> we had 109 people that were temporarily detained. they're all in. but they were temporarily detained to make sure that the safety of the other 324 million americans was put first. i don't see how that's a big poblem. >> reporter: it is becoming increasingly clear tens of thousands of people directly impacted by the new policy.

of the nearly 60,000 who have had their visas revoked, thousands are already here in the country. they won't be deported but if they leave, they will not be allowed back in. and there are tens of thousands more overseas with visas already in hand who woud have been allowed in but no longer. new this morning after the first two weeks of his presidency, president trump is discussing the controversial travel ban. in his address, the president vowed to keep the american people safe, explaining why he signed the executive order. >> the executive order establishes a process to develop new vetting and mechanisms to ensure those coming into america love and support our people. that they have good intentions. you, the law-abiding citizens of this country, are my total priority. your safety, your jobs, and your wages guide our decisions. >> president trump says he will continue his america first approach when it comes to trade,

taxes, immigration, and foreign affairs. one day after nordstrom said it was cutting ivanka trump's clothing line, the last items are being marked down and what some are calling a fire sale. yesterday afternoon, a few shoes that were available online were selling for 40% off the original price. a spokesperson for ivanka trump's line says nordstrom still has her products. as abc7 news reporter kate larson explains, the whole thing was prompted by a bay area boycott called grab your wallet. >> reporter: nordstrom and neiman marcus say they're dropping the ivanka trump brand. neiman's announcing it will no longer be carrying ivanka trump's precious jewelry line on its website. nordstrom also dropping the brand's shoes and clothing saying based on the brand's performance, we decided not to buy it for this season. >> people can vote with their vote, but they can also vote with their pocketbook. >> in my mind, there's a very clear connection between the

boycott and nordstrom's decision. >> reporter: she's talking about a boycott she helped start in october, using #grab your wallet to discourage retailers from doing business with the trump family. >> from october 11 through yesterday, the hashtag had been seen on twitter millions of times. from what i've seen throughout this movement, people simply, especially women, don't want to see the name trump while they're shopping. >> reporter: that's certainly true for sharon conway who was disappointed to learn macy's has a shoe display. >> i really hate to boycott macy's but if they don't get them out, i'm not coming in. >> reporter: not everyone agrees the brand should suffer political consequences. >> i actually like her shoes. i own some myself, not necessarily a big fan of her dad but i think she's great. >> reporter: a spokesperson said nordstrom did purchase their apparel for spring. in san francisco, kate larson, abc7 news. meanwhile, politico is

reporting ivanka trump and her husband jared kushner helped stop an executive order that would have overturned protections for lgbt americans. the couple lobbied president trump to issue a statement, promising to uphold president obama's 2014 order. obama's he white house released statement tuesday night promising to protect lgbt rights. a bay area legislator wants to stop landlords from using the crackdown to force tooen out of their homes. abc7 news was there as david chiu introduced the bill. it would prohibit landlords from threatening to report tenants to immigration authorities. landlords are threatening so tenants will leave on their own, allowing landlords to raise rents. >> this particular landlord said to the tenants, don't make me give you an eviction notice and go through the courts. you'll be deported if that

happens. >> chiu's bill also bars landlords from discussing -- disclosing information about tenants's immigration status. it's participants after similar protections that exist in the state. happening today, the south bay, more than 1,000 bay area educators will meet at the california teachers association conference to urge a no vote on president trump's education secretary nominee, betsy devos. this is is -- she is a school choice act vis and has been promoting charter schools for many years but labor unions fiercely oppose her, saying that she is trying to take apart public education. the confirmation vote in the u.s. senate for devos is scheduled on monday. educators plan to meet at noon today at the fair mount hotel in san jose. coffee shops across the nation, including some here in the bay area, are raising money for the civil -- for american civil liberties union or aclu. our partners at hoodline report that andytown coffee roasters in

san francisco's outer sunset is one of the participating locations. andytown is providing these postcards to send to senators thanking them for leading the fight against the travel ban. although nations to andytown will be given to the aclu. >> specifically the country of yemen is credited for being the export point of coffee to the western world throughout history. so it's really important for coffee shops to get together to stick up for immigrants from all over. >> andytown hopes to raise at least $500,000 in donations over the next week. covered california is trying to give consumers until the end of today to complete their enrollment. anyone who started an application before the 31st of january can finish the process today with the help from a certified insurance agent. if the application is complete by today, coverage starts on

that's how mild it is and as you go into the sierra nevada, the winter storm warning has been dropped in favor of a winter weather advisory so the snow level pretty high right now in the mid 30s there and it is raining lightly at blue canyon, tahoe valley, this goes on until 10:00 tonight. and we're looking at heavy snow showers, lots of places were closed yesterday due to the winds and the winds still will be quite gusty today, and it's pretty warm there as well. temperatures in the low 50s in the south bay. good morning to you, except for around los gatos, 48 there, 52 in santa clara, 55 in newark so the numbers are mild but it's still about 2 to 6 degrees cooler this morning than it was yesterday but still muggy out there. doesn't it feel humid? that's not going to change. some showers today, mainly this morning, the first half of the day, then some sunshine in the afternoon looking at the next storm to arrive late tomorrow by about 6:00, some evening showers.

we'll time it out for you. a rainy pattern the rest of the week and this could add up so today, some scattered, light showers, anywhere from 2/10 mainly in the north bay to really nothing at all, just breezy at times and by the afternoon, we could see some sunny breaks. so here's a couple of waves of moisture throughout the morning hours, it's 9:00. by noontime, they become more isolate and had then we get that break throughout the afternoon and evening hoirz, taking you into sunday morning, sunday afternoon now where at 3:00 you could see light showers up in marin county and then by 5:00, it's sinking south, 7:00, heavy rain is offshore, and we'll see some pretty good downpours right over the heart of the bay, 8:00 throughout the evening hours until about the wee hours of the morning and you add the totals tonight into the next seven days. this is through thursday. we could see 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inches of rain so all week long, we're going to see little bits of rain and it will add up on tuesday and beyond that, we're going to have to watch it closely.
