good morning on a monday, i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm linsey davis. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." the patriots of course have won a historic super bowl, defeating the falcons 34-28 in the first overtime game ever. the wild comeback celebrations and the players' reactions we have it all covered coming up. iran says a shipment of natural uranium expected this week will boost its stockpiles by more than 60% over what it had prior to the landmark agreement in 2015 with world powers led by the u.s. a shipment is reportedly part of a swap for enriched uranium which can be used in nuclear weapons. there were demonstrations in downtown los angeles against the keystone and dakota access pipelines which president trump

has put on the fast track. south korea says it will strengthen the safety requirements for the lithium ion batteries used in portable electronic devices. samsung, a korean company, was forced to scrap its galaxy note 7 smartphones because its batteries sometimes catch fire. those are some of our top stories we're following on this monday, february 6th. >> from abc news, this is "world news now." >> do you think the parties have stopped in boston? >> i doubt it. >> i think some are just getting under way. some have lost their voices. many in boston -- >> passed out. >> exactly. calling it the greatest super bowl ever. the new england patriots of course dug themselves out of a 25-point hole against the atlanta falcons. >> and forced the game into overtime. the first overtime in super bowl history by the way. the patriots won 34-28 when james white ran two yards into the end zone. when lady gaga came out for her

halftime show, the falcons were firmly in control. so was the singer, leaping off the roof of nrg stadium, then performing with hundreds of singers, dancers, and yes, drones. >> we had 300 drones that were powered there from intel, that shot was pretaped by the way. patriots fans back home, in the meantime, at the end of all of this, taking to the streets of boston. celebrating at nrg stadium with the crew, booing roger goodell as he took to the stage. he really is a nemesis. you can see they're all dressed up including that guy with the jacket. and this was the scene in many parts of boston. people singing, dancing. police thanked them for good behavior saying they acted like champions. they acted as if they'd been there before, and they have, four previous times. the on-field champions also celebrating. >> you know, our team showed great mental toughness throughout the game. just never really flinched even

though the score was so against us for so long. >> yeah, i couldn't believe it. one of the greatest catches. we've been on the other end of a few of those catches. you know, tonight -- you know, we came up with it. so it was a pretty spectacular catch. he had a hell of a game. >> had a good feel on it. i didn't know if maybe a piece of the ball was touching. i knew that -- i don't know what the dang rule is, no one knows what the rule for a catch is. i was like, i think i got it. i'm pretty sure i got it. tip your hat to atlanta. they played a really good football game. they're a really good team. thankfully we were able to make more plays at the end. >> i wasn't thinking much, you know. i was thinking, we've just got to score. then we scored the touchdown. it was 9. then we got a turnover. there was a lot of [ bleep ] that happened tonight. i got hit pretty hard. >> i love it, keeping it real. >> absolutely. we're going to bring this sucker home! new yorkers aren't necessarily

families torn apart by the trump administration's targeted travel ban reuniting with hugs and tears. with the ban now on hold pending appeals, it's a race against time for visa holders to get into the u.s. >> i didn't know how long it's going to take me to see my mother. >> happy that i'm here now. >> reporter: an anxious moment for many families. >> i really hope that everything is okay. >> reporter: officials canceled this woman's visa in the initial confusion. now she's back in syria. her husband in virginia. it's unclear how long the doors will remain open. the federal appeals court rejected the trump administration's bid to immediately restore the travel ban, which denies entry to people from seven predominantly muslim countries. the legal review of trump's executive order now almost certain to make its way to the u.s. supreme court. vice president mike pence is defending his boss.

>> i think the early days of this administration are going to be described in the history books as days of action. >> reporter: the president is spending the weekend at his florida resort. but an interview he taped friday with fox's bill o'reilly is raising eyebrows. in it, trump admits he admires russian president vladimir putin. >> putin's a killer. >> a lot of killers, we got a lot of killers, you think our country's so innocent? >> reporter: that comparison does not sit well with lawmakers including trump's fellow republicans. >> there is no moral equivalency between the united states of america, the greatest freedom-loving nation in the history of the world, and the murderous thugs that are in putin's defense of his cronyism. >> reporter: david wright, abc news, palm beach. in the meantime, the vice president taking to the airwaves to defend president trump's decision to preserve president obama's 2014 executive order protecting lgbt employees of federal contractors from discrimination. >> he appeared on abc's "this week." he told george stephanopoulos

president trump's decision was in line with his message to the lgbt community on the campaign trail. >> throughout the campaign president trump made it clear that discrimination would have no place in our administration. i mean, he was the very first republican nominee to mention the lgbtq community at a republican national convention and was applauded for it. and i was there applauding with him. >> still, pence reaffirmed president trump's stated plan to "destroy the johnson amendment" which prohibits churches and other tax-exempt organizations from endorsing or opposing political candidates. the explosive developments over the weekend in what had been a cold case in new york. dna evidence apparently has led to an arrest in a high-profile murder of a new york city jogger. karina vetrano's body was found in the weeds in a park not far from her queens home. prosecutors say a 20-year-old

man, chanel lewis, has admitted to killing vetrano. the suspect's father says he doesn't believe it. >> he's a wonderful young man, wonderful young man. >> do you believe he could have committed this crime? >> no, he would not have. he would not have. >> and in addition to the confession, prosecutors say lewis' dna was found at the scene and on the victim's body. there is a new winter storm gaining strength and taking aim on the west coast, packing snow, heavy rain, and flash floods. it's triggering weather alerts from california to colorado. right behind another storm taking shape in the midwest. here's abc's senior meteorologist rob marciano. >> been a rough winter for portland and seattle. they're getting another storm right now where snow levels are nearing sea level. we've looked for a high-impact event the next 12 to 18 hours. 2 to 6 inches of snow potentially in the metro areas. 1 to 2 feet in some of the

but she's expected to be far away from any fanfare. while official celebrations play out in london, the 90-year-old monarch is staying 110 miles to the north at her sandringham house estate where her father george vi died of lung cancer on february 6, 1952. >> she's marking that event there at their estate. turning to the new court documents released on a scandal involving a popular college football team. >> the baylor university coaching staff is accused in a major cover-up involving players. here's adrienne bankert with the details. >> reporter: new evidence claiming former baylor head coach art briles shielded players from university discipline in response to another libel lawsuit by another coach. court documents filed by the university show text messages between briles and his staff. in a 2013 incident, a masseuse asked the team to discipline a player who allegedly exposed himself and asked for favors. briles reportedly responds, what kind of discipline? she a stripper?

upon hearing it was at a spa, the coach writes, not quite as bad. in another exchange after a player is arrested for assault, coach briles texted the athletic director, the player said waco p.d. was there, said they were going to keep it quiet. those texts released nearly nine months after internal investigation found the school mishandled and in some cases silenced sexual assault claims. stephanie muntank taking her alleged sexual assault to then university president ken starr. >> i wish they would have done more to help. if someone really believed i was sitting in class next to my rapist, more should have been done about it. >> reporter: starr eventually stepping down, briles fired. since then briles supporters have demanded more details some hoped would exonerate the coach. >> these text messages reinforce, in many ways confirm, the allegations that women have made about a cover-up. >> reporter: briles also filed a libel suit against the university but dropped it just

the presidential race. >> that's right. in a presuper bowl interview on fox news the president said vice president pence will head a special commission to investigate voter fraud. >> let me just tell you, it doesn't have to do with the vote, although that's the end result. has to do with the registration. when you look at the registration and you see dead people that have voted. when you see people that are registered in two states that voted in two states. when you see other things. when you see illegals, people that are not citizens, and they're on the registration rolls. look, bill, we can be babies. but you take a look at the registration, you have illegals, dead people, you have this -- it's really a bad situation. it's really bad. >> president trump did not directly answer a question about whether he has evidence of voter fraud, only suggesting that he's seen voter registration records suggesting widespread voter fraud. election officials in both parties say they've seen no such evidence. >> he spent the weekend criticizing that federal appeals

court judge who issued the temporary restraining order on his travel ban. >> he said that judge is putting the country "in peril." it comes as the president tweeted out to followers, enjoy the super bowl and then we continue make america great again. but not all americans are feeling great. here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: a legal showdown with tearful repercussions. >> i didn't know how long it's going to take me to see my mother. >> reporter: families torn apart by trump's abrupt targeted travel ban racing to reunite, not sure how long the door will remain open. trump warned, i have instructed homeland security to check people coming into our country very carefully. the courts are making the job very difficult." the fate of trump's controversial policy shutting the doors to visa holders from seven predominantly muslim countries now in the hands of the ninth circuit court of appeals. the appeals court rejected the administration's plea for an emergency ruling that would have

reinstated the executive order. but a three-judge panel is set to review the issue. the department of justice argues the federal judge in washington who lifted the ban improperly second-guessed the president's national security determinations, overstepping his judicial authority. democrats are pushing back on that. >> the president is not a dictator. the framers of our constitution wanted a strong congress for the very reason that most of these kinds of things should be done within the scope of lawmaking. >> reporter: trump appears to see it differently. tweeting, "just cannot believe a judge would put our country in such peril. if something happens, blame him and court system. people pouring in. bad." even some republicans are expressing discomfort about the tone the president has set. especially with that tweet disparaging this so-called judge. >> i'll be honest, i don't

understand language like that, we don't have so-called judges, we don't have so-called senators, we don't have so-called presidents. >> reporter: there's mounting criticism of this exchange from trump's interview with fox news bill o'reilly. >> do you respect putin? >> i do respect him. >> do you, why? >> i respect a lot of people. but that doesn't mean i'm going to get along with them. >> putin's a killer. >> a lot of killers, we got a lot of killers, you think our country's so innocent? >> reporter: senator marco rubio blasted back, when has a democratic political activist been poisoned by the gop or vice versa? we are not the same as putin." vice president mike pence insists there's no moral equivalency but he told george stephanopoulos there's good reason to improve relations with moscow. >> russia has a common interest in confronting radical islamic terrorism, especially isis. if we have opportunities to work together, i think the president is looking for an opportunity to begin that relationship anew. >> reporter: the president is

20-year-old suspect. adrienne bankert has the latest. >> reporter: the face of a suspected killer. 20-year-old chanel lewis greeted by angry neighbors screaming "murderer." karina vetrano was jogging when she was raped and strangled in queens, new york, last august. her mother relieved an arrest has been made. >> the demon must get his justice. >> reporter: detectives followed hundreds of leads in an exhaustive search. just last week they approached lewis for a dna test they claimed tied him to the crime scene. >> karina helped us identify this person. she was dna under her nails. she had dna on her back and the cell phone. >> reporter: police say lewis has given them more details. >> lewis was interviewed by detectives and made detailed incriminating statements and admissions. charges are now pending. >> reporter: in a chilling twist, police say that last may, months before the killing, a 911 call was made complaining lewis was behaving suspiciously in the same park where the murder took place. her father taking comfort that a suspect is now in custody. >> i'm not going to say it's a good day.

plunging into an icy ravine. marci gonzalez with the story. >> reporter: a treacherous rescue in the mountains near los angeles. four men and a woman hiking at a 7,000-foot elevation saturday suddenly sliding 300 feet down the ice of this steep slope. one man identified as 67-year-old michael yu killed. three of the other hikers badly hurt. >> three severely injured, mostly unconscious. >> reporter: another hiker tracking down rescuers who happened to be training two miles away. backup rushing in. deputies lowering themselves to the mountainside. carefully making their way down to the hikers. >> just holding on to the tree and just staying there, waiting for help. >> reporter: securing them one by one. >> female in the helicopter was crying, she was very emotional.

>> reporter: hoisting them up to helicopters hovering above and rushing them to a hospital. >> i think they're very fortunate to be alive. >> reporter: the rescuers tell me those hikers didn't have the proper equipment for icy conditions. they say the survivors are recovering, including one who's being treated for a broken spine. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. when we come back, lady gaga taking us behind the scenes before her epic halftime performance. we'll check out some of the other celebrity pics from the big game.
