the fight over president trump's immigration ban comes to san francisco. families from seven countries are on edge as a deadline looms. the justice department has until this afternoon to submit the argument on behalf of the trump administration to a federal appeals court in san francisco. i'm kristen zse. >> and i'm natasha zouves. we have live coverage. matt keller covering silicon valley taking action but let's start with amy hollyfield live in san francisco. amy? >> reporter: good morning, natasha. we are waiting for a big

decision out this courthouse here in san francisco. the judge's ruling making that decision aren't here, they are scattered from san francisco to phoenix to honolulu but the government's brief is due here by 3:00 this afternoon. as of right now, the travel ban has been lifted. so families reunited at airports over the weekend. a judge in seattle lifted the ban and now the justice department is appealing that decision, arguing that the courts are ill-equipped to second-guess the president about future risks. and this is the appeals court in san francisco. president trump said he thinks he will win this, he said for the safety of the country. he tweeted his displeasure over the judge's decision, saying if anything bad happens, you should blame the judge. judge robart, up in seattle. hard to say when this federal appeals panel will rule. experts think it will be within a week but many are predicted this case wouldn't stop here and

end up at the s-- the u.s. supr court. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. nearly 100 tech companies argue in a court filing that the move is illegal and would hurt their businesses. matt keller is live at e-bay headquarters in san jose. matt. >> reporter: kristin, here is the brief. and in it they argue the president's executive order violates immigration laws and the constitution. tech is taking a stand. 97 companies, you including apple, facebook and google and netflix said the president's recent executive order is bad for their businesses. they are not a party in the lawsuit but this friend of the court filing could allow them to submit the brief with the intent to influence the court's decision. in that brief they argue the travel ban on refugees and travellers from the seven muslim countries would make it more difficult and expensive to

recruit and hire and retain some of the world's best employees. >> tech is here to stay. it impacts every aspect of people's lives. and they have a job, both to their customers and to their investors to grow their companies, and having the right people in place is critical for that growth. >> reporter: president trump said he's trying to protect americans. in a couple of tweets on saturday, president trump criticized the court's decision to put a hold on the ban saying because the ban was lifted by a judge, many very bad and dangerous people may be pouring into our country. a terrible decision. tech companies say the executive order could incentivize building operations outside of the u.s. some trump supporters are threatening to boycott the companies for their stances. tech analyst tim barren said both scenarios are unlikely. >> are you going to stop buying from amazon. they are one of the biggest things they buy from. are you going to stop buying apple products? probably not. so they don't feel threatened by

that at all. >> reporter: and a person working with e-bay p.r. team came out and spoke with me and said they expect their ceo to make a statement about the brief sometime today. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening today, protesters will rally in san francisco to urge senator dianne feinstein to do more to oppose president trump's agenda. demon straighters will be outside of her husband's private equity firm and they say she has not voted against the cabinet nominees or held any town hall meetin meetings. the meeting is at noon. and there is talk about a sanctuary city. >> as you know, i'm opposed to sanctuary cities, they breed crime and there is problems and if we have to we'll defund. we give munds to -- >> to california. >> they are out of controls, as

you know. the voters agree -- >> the president threatened to take away funding from the sanctuary cities or from the entire state if california moves forward with the proposal. and on capitol hill they are expected to vote on whether to confirm betsy devos, the pick to lead the department of education. it is said she will make an excellent secretary but the billionaire republican donor has faced fierce criticism from labor unions. democrats and teacher organizations have accused her of seeking to dismantle education and divert money to charter schools and private school vouchers. >> two public senators have come out against devos. and new details on a hit-and-run in novato. the marin county sheriff's office just released a sketch of the victim. take a look. they are asking for your help identifying him. he was killed on thursday morning at the atherton on-ramp

quarterback in hist oory. he was named the game's mvp for the fourth time in his career. his family still lives in san mateo. abc 7 news was at a block party with the family's neighbors who say they never had a doubt their hometown boy could get the job done. >> he's been through the games before and they've been behind in several games and they find a way to come back and he proved it again today. >> ever since he was a kid, five or six years old, on saturday morning he would knock on the door to wake up my boys to go out and play ball. he always loved to play. >> his neighbors have been having a super bowl block party since his first trip to the big game in 2002. today san francisco mayor ed lee is expected to announce a plan to provide true tuition to students at city college. he is holding a news conference at 1:00 to discuss the deal. according to the examiner, the mayor agreed to spend $5.4 million on the program and it is roughly more than half of

hello, again. let's add on and be specific of what the next storm will bring

us. we'll start with the flash flood watch. you could see it is for the santa cruz mountains into the north bay from 10:00 this evening through 4:00 tomorrow afternoon. ponding on the roadways, streams and river flooding possible and debris flows over burn scars especially in the santa cruz mountains. and then the wind advisory. so the damage, the window for damage will start at 9:00 tonight, through 6:00 tomorrow morning for the areas shaded in yellow which is everywhere except the north bay. gusts 40 to 50 miles per hour and downed trees an we have an airport warning for sfo from 10:00 through noon tomorrow. the winds i i adjusted them from knots to miles per hour, they are different, from 17 to 35 and gusting 40 to 52. so we'll have issues getting in and out of sfo tomorrow. and right now in walnut creek. moderate to heavy rain late this evening and again tomorrow and then the wet pattern will linger through friday but tonight's

storm is the strongest. looking at walnut creek and lafayette, alamo, and comes down through the canyon from san ramon to hayward and the san mateo bridge and the dumbarton bridge getting wet with the sonnol grade. and you could see that the rain is light on the bridge and it is going to get lighter through 2:00 and scattered from 4:00 to 6:00 and will pick up at 8:00 and so will the breezes. temperatures tonight are in the 50s once again. after staying in the mid to upper 50s today. there is not much of a change. so here we are at noon. could you see the line sinking to the south and here at 5:00, it starts to fill in a little bit and you see some orange in there and then it stays up in the north bay through the morning hours and then it slowly sinks to the south. do you see that rain? that is the heavy rain roll you through in the heart of the bay at 8:00 to 9:00 in the morning and also high tide tomorrow.

so we may have some issues up near mill valley and those particular areas. and look at how it just sits on top of us and continually rains, moderate to heavily. by this evening, a couple hundreds of an inch to a tenth of an inch but tomorrow in the south bay, you get an inch but everybody else is up to two inches and the santa cruz is up to six to eight inches of rain and that is why we'll have flooding issues. this will taper by 5:00 tomorrow evening and then weaker storms for wednesday and thursday and friday and just one, light on the storm impact scale and saturday on sunday we'll see some sunshine and not worry about this. >> we'll need it by then. thanks, mike. this is the final nail in the coffin for mavericks. this year's contest off the half moon bay has been con selled that say that bankruptcy files

students homeless and hungry and now the california state university system is lending a hand to help students get to class without worrying about where they sleep at night. and bragging rights tonight at 5:00. the airline that landed in new zealand and how that topples san francisco in the record book. the cincinnati zoo said a baby hippo has taken her first steps. here she is. this is little fiona. just slowly walking around. her first wobbly steps caught on camera. this is a big accomplishment for a little hippo born six weeks early. >> to give you some perspective, she weighs 29 pounds at birth and a newborn weighs 55 pounds. animal care team is working 24/7 to help her gain weight and get stronger. she's almost two weeks old. >> and talk about cute baby pictures. look at this adorable photo of her. no teeth yet. just a gummy smile. what -- and even whiskers look good on her.
