entirely on declining sales. >> ivanka trump resigned from the brand after her father was voted president. meanwhile, t.j. maxx and martials say the line will no longer be featured in their stores. >> let's get to the other big stories we're following this morning because across parts of the northeast, schools are closed. the region is bracing for this. as much as a foot of snow this morning right about the time that kids would be leaving for school. public works departments have attached their plows and salt spreaders in philadelphia and other cities have snow emergency rules in effect. airlines already canceled thousands of flight. weather is causing problems on the west coast. the forecast is for another day of high winds and heavy rains. some schools north of san francisco will be closed today. there have already been numerous mud and rock sides as well as flash flooding. no deaths are reported so far, close calls like this one about 40 miles east of fresno. that driver tried to cross a swollen creek in his pickup as a short cut home.

you have to be romantic dinner and stay in the mood. a lot of people go out for the ron man tick dinner but may not get the quality they expect and it may not be the experience people want. >> it's amateur's night valentine's day night in general. one of the restaurant guides says the price can be twice as much on valentine's day. one in three adults according to the national restaurant association actually does go out for valentine's day dinner. you feel sort of compelled to do so. it's just the dinner is rushed. oftentimes, it's a fixed menu. they're trying to turn the tables around quickly. i would suggest making a nice romantic dinner at home. i'm old fashioned that way. >> my husband and i always make the deal with each other, we'll go out another night to an expensive dinner. he's a great cook anyway. moving onto the flowers. a lady loves flowers, guys like to receive flowers. it brightens your day. this is not the time saving on them. >> they're really cheap in august when nobody wants them. but valentine's day, they really get wild. and especially in the weeks leading up to valentine's day.

don't procrastinate. girls want a dozen red roses. the long stems are more expensive. if you want to save, you can go with a different color rose. yellow. >> get creative with the flower purchase and come up with some different flower altogether. >> at the end of the day, it's the thought that counts. get the orders in early because they go up as we get closer to valentine's day. >> they skyrocket. a lot of people give jewelry on valentine's day. the traditional romantic gesture. >> not a cheap gesture because jewelry is marked up anyway. it's one of the top retail markups that you see sort of all the time. that and movie theater popcorn. and precut vegetables and fruits. so, yes, jewelry is expensive. 300% markup is typical. valentine's day it's not uncommon to see 1,000 percent markup. it's up there. especially at the chains. if you want to go to independents, you might get a better price. >> negotiate a little bit.

and those parts were some of the worst damaged. dozens of people were injured. so far no deaths though reported. out of washington where the country's new attorney general will be sworn in this morning. >> jeff sessions was confirmed by the senate overnight on a nearly party line vote. his confirmation ends a bitter partisan fight in which democrats expressed concerns about sessions' record on civil rights. after the senate's vote, sessions resigned as senator from alabama. his replacement could be named by the governor of that state as early as today. and president trump's pick for supreme court expressing some concern about the president's extended criticism of federal judges. judge neil gorsuch made the critical comments in a private discussion with connecticut democratic senator. last night, connecticut senator richard blumenthal talked about his meeting with gorsuch.

>> i said to judge gorsuch that i find these attacks on the judiciary absolutely abhorrent and unacceptable. and i asked him to express his criticism. and to condemn these kinds of public attacks on an independent judiciary. and, at that point, after some back and forth, he did say that he found them to be disheartening and demoralizing. >> a spokesman for gorsuch confirmed his comments. president trump's criticism of federal judges in the 9th circuit appeals court in san francisco continues to consider whether the travel ban should be reinstated. that decision could come today. the president slamming nordstrom for dropping ivanka trump's fashion line. nordstrom says it dropped the line because of poor sales, not politics. the retailer's stock dipped but rebounded later in the day. ivanka trump resigned from the brand after her father was elected president. t.j. max and marshals say the

>> so the president seems to apply some pressure saying in a tweet if the ban isn't put back in place "we can never have the security and safety to which we are entitled." and there was some pushback from the president's supreme court nominee as abc's cecilia vega reports. >> reporter: president trump's supreme court pick making the rounds on capitol hill today, and while making nice with senators, judge neil gorsuch had harsh words about the man who nominated him, his spokesman confirming during a meeting with one senate democrat, judge gorsuch described president trump's recent criticism of judges as "demoralizing and disheartening." the president has lashed out at the federal judge who put a temporary hold on his immigration ban calling him a so-called judge and saying he's to blame if anything happened. and he seemed to criticize the federal judges currently deliberating the appeal of that ruling. > i don't ever want to call a court biased, so i won't call it biased. we haven't had a decision yet.

but courts seem to be so political. >> reporter: those three judges now considering whether to reinstate the travel ban had tough questions for lawyers on both sides, one asked whether the administration had any proof that travelers from the seven muslim majority countries present a threat. >> has the government pointed to any evidence connecting these countries with terrorism? >> reporter: another judge asking the washington state lawyer challenging the ban why he believes the president's executive order unfairly targets muslims. >> i have trouble understanding why we're supposed to infer religious animus when in fact the vast majority of muslims would not be affected as residents of those nations. >> reporter: watching at home in the white house, president trump clearly not impressed. >> and i was a good student. i understand things. i comprehend very well. okay? better than i think almost anybody.

and i want to tell you, i listened to a bunch of stuff last night on television that was disgraceful. >> reporter: as the president attacks the judicial branch, he's also accused of fanning fears about what he describes as a growing terror threat, dropping a hint about what he's learned in his classified briefings. >> believe me, i've learned a lot in the last two weeks. and terrorism is a far greater threat than the people of our country understand. >> reporter: a striking shift from past presidents who have urged americans to be vigilant but not afraid. we pressed the white house for an explanation. >> is there a specific threat that he is talking about? and should the american public, based on that statement right there, be fearful? >> no, but i think the american people should understand that

the president's committed to doing this. we face a very, very real threat in isis and radical islamic terrorism. >> just to clarify, is the threat today greater than it was yesterday or last week? that's what he's saying. >> i understand what he's saying. what i'm telling you is we shouldn't ever be behind the curve on the threats this country faces. we should make sure -- we don't know when the next one is coming. > from the president, this is ominous tweet about the ongoing legal battle. big increase in traffic into our country from certain areas while our people are far more vulnerable as we wait. >> sean spicer said he wanted to pool the data and he would get back to reporters pressing him on the president's tweet. we are still waiting. we reached out to the department of homeland security and the state department. they could not tell us whether there has been an increase in people as the president said, coming from certain areas. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. and the nation's new attorney general jeff sessions will be at the white house this morning to be sworn into office. sessions was confirmed by his former senate colleagues last night on nearly a party line vote. that vote ended a partisan battle in which democrats said sessions wouldn't do enough to protect the rights of minorities and others. sessions has resigned his senate

seat. his replacement will be named by the governor of alabama. the other major developing story this morning is the massive snowstorm headed for the northeast. a foot of snow or more is expected to arrive during the morning rush and most school districts have already begun announcing canceled classes or closed school entirely. the airlines have canceled thousands of today's flights in and out of the region which may impact travel in other parts of the country. public works employees are pulling all-nighters getting ready to keep roads as clear as possible, trying to prevent this scene yesterday in boston. amazingly, no one was injured as this suv went sliding down a hill, not even the pedestrian you might have noticed that is hugging a wall there. scary stuff. >> yeah, absolutely. moving on now, and to the weather. let's find out how things are shaping up. >> that's right.

authorities say abdul malik abdul kareem, an american born muslim convert, helped two followers carry through an attempted attack outside a prophet muhammad cartoon in 2015. the two were killed in a shoot-out with the police. the pentagon is announcing at least 11 al qaeda operatives were killed in u.s. air strikes in syria including an al qaeda operative with close ties to osama bin laden and the man who replaced him. the pentagon says abu al masri was in charge of training camps in the '80s and '90s. ten other operatives were killed in another air strike. and white house press secretary sean spicer says critics of the u.s. raid in yemen should apologize. he singled out senator john mccain who says he would not describe the raid as successful. mccain noted the death of u.s. navy seal ryan owens. spicer took issue with that saying the raid was indeed a success. >> anyone who would suggest it's not a success does disservice to the life of chief ryan owens.
