good morning, america. winter whiteout. the biggest snowstorm of the season hitting the northeast right now. 50 million americans bracing for up to a foot of snow. and blizzard conditions already sparking dangerous commutes. >> watch out, watch out. >> thousands of flights canceled. schools closed in major cities. the snow coming down up to four inches an hour. demoralizing and disheartening. unprecedented comments from president trump's supreme court nominee criticizing the president's harsh words about judges. >> courts seem to be so political. >> as trump lashing out at nordstrom for dropping ivanka's fashion line. will this start a chain reaction? and basket-brawl. former nba star charles oakley accused of

heckling the knicks owner caught on camera fighting in the stands as security tries to eject him. >> charles oakley is involved in something. they need security in a big way. >> getting into a shoving match with the guards. the former knicks forward arrested. now speaking out. what sparked the fight. good morning, america. and it's really starting to come down now but no snow day for us. this major nor'easter is hitting from maryland to maine. >> here in new york they told all the kids early last evening, 50 million americans in its path right now. let's take a live look at the new jersey turnpike. see it right there. a dangerous commute this morning. linzie janis on the road this morning for us. >> almost unbelievable. 65 yesterday. i was thinking about golf. now today i'm thinking about skiing. >> yes, we brace for this. can you get ready for this? schools in at least five major cities from philadelphia to
7:02 am
boston already closing for the storm. you know that we have team coverage for you this morning starting with rob marciano who is right here with us in new york city. good morning, rob. >> good morning, robin. michael got that right. this is a slap in the face compared to yesterday's record setting highs in the 60s and 70s. is snow globe in times square and we have got three, four inches on the ground even though the ground was warm with these snowfall rates, it didn't take long for things to pile up not only on the sidewalks but the main roads, very, very tricky travel for that reason. thankfully this is a quick mover. that is the silver lining as this storm which had some explosive development with it, we expect it to continue to rapidly intensify in the next 12 hours as it move from west to east. but we have winter storm warnings from philadelphia up through new york hartford and boston and blizzard warnings. a lot of wind and we will talk about the totals and track this in a bit. but let's get to gio benitez in philadelphia. gio.
7:03 am
>> good morning to you. we are getting the snow here hard. it is falling fast and we're seeing all of the gusts just making matters so much worse and take a look behind me. these plows are loading up with all of this salt trying to get that out there. it is 107,000 tons of salt to take on this storm. this morning, a major winter storm slamming the east coast. 50 million americans caught right in the crosshairs. the crippling whiteout and white knuckle conditions causing a messy morning commute. that powerful storm system taking its toll from nebraska to ohio. now barreling up the east coast. icy roads were to blame for this 55-car pileup in massachusetts bringing traffic to a standstill. >> my car got hit by another vehicle when i was spinning. >> reporter: and this crash in boston where one was killed after a driver lost control on the slick streets. >> full black ice, couldn't control the car. >> reporter: and watch as this car slips and slides down a sheet of ice. >> watch out. watch out. >> reporter: uncontrollably bouncing off cars.
7:04 am
>> very nerve-racking having my son in the backseat. >> reporter: a far cry from the record springlike temperatures in the east just 24 hours ago. now residents in philly, new york and boston trying to dig out. and back out here in philadelphia we can tell you what made the storm worse is it started off as rape and turned into snow. they weren't able to use all of the salt in philadelphia to pretreat these roads. it would have been just been washed away. so you have to be extra careful on these roads as they get that salt out there. george. >> it is going to be a messy morning. gio, thanks. this storm hitting the northeast at rush hour creating all kinds of hazards and abc's linzie janis right in the middle of it on the new jersey turnpike. >> reporter: good morning. the national weather service says travel is not, i repeat, is not recommended this morning in this area because of the heavy snow and you can see why. conditions pretty bad. the snow is coming down quickly.
7:05 am
blowing sideways. accumulating two to four inches per hour. traffic is moving slowly and having trouble accelerating and braking. very slick out here. my producer is from california. so he's getting a course here in snow driving. it's very treacherous indeed. a dangerous commute. >> well, better him driving than you right now, linzie, but in the meantime, it does seem like the road is pretty empty so people are taking the advice of the officials. >> definitely not as much traffic as you see out here but we have seen some commuters headed into the city, a lot of heavy trucks as well. people moving very slowly. there have been a reported six accidents on the new jersey turnpike. we saw one. a car rear-ended. you definitely don't want to be out here if you don't have to be. >> okay, be careful out there. >> we're going to go from the roads to the runway. the airlines are delaying and canceling thousands of flights this morning. adrienne bankert is at logan airport. good morning, adrienne.
7:06 am
>> reporter: i have a smile on my face. i can't speak for the passengers behind us. some of the last to get out on some of the last flights out of boston logan international airport. 65% of canceled flights coming out of the airport and into the airport. check out all these cancellation notices, not happening here but all over the country. 2,700 flights, 2,778 to be exact all across the u.s. will not take off today. compare that to a normal day. only 100 usual cancellations. our flight was canceled from laguardia to boston last night. now thankfully we were able to get on a delayed jetblue flight. that was good news. but that's not what a lot of people are going to be facing today. in fact, jetblue, one of the hardest hit airlines all across the country especially the northeast. in pittsburgh we know that they have tried to do everything they can to clear the tarmac and the runways there. they have this giant snowblower in pittsburgh to try to do that.
7:07 am
but many people are going to be out weathering the storm and some people are just going to have to stay home. michael. >> adrienne, if you're supposed to fly today should you stay at home or do you have to worry about losing your money? >> reporter: you know what, thankfully a lot of the airlines including 11 major airlines hawaiian, the latest to add to the list, they are making sure that people get their money back, in fact, they are giving people vouchers so that those change fees are waived. many times the fare difference will also be waived but you want to call your airline, in fact, many of them have differing policies so you only have days to get that ticket and actually use it once the snow rolls through, michael. >> thank you, adrienne. rob, you made it back in, my friend. >> much warmer and drier inside for sure. the winter just howling outside and those are going to continue to pick up. as this develops off the coastline. rain/snow line south of philadelphia and see the column get colder. it will turn into a very fluffy
7:08 am
high totaling snow and with the winds it means it will be drifting quite a bit so 7:00 a.m., 8:30, the core will be in through new york through hartford, connecticut, between 10:00 and 1:00 p.m. and boston by 3:00 p.m. the leading back edge is through the new york city area by 3:00. a very quick hitter and that is the silver lining if you do not like snow. boston, you better like it. i think you'll have the highest totals. 10:00 tonight will be history and we'll dig out overnight as we scramble to get the schools and government offices back open for business. here's our snowfall map, 4 to 8 inches in the pink area including philadelphia, new york probably 8 to 12. locally over a foot from hartford to boston and big winds. the kids are smiling but everyone else can be wrestling with this for sure. >> a sweet little girl outside with her daddy and she's like can we come in, yes, get on in here. >> enjoying the snow day, that's for sure. we move on to breaking news in france. we're learning there was an explosion at a nuclear power
7:09 am
plant. let's go to abc's lama hasan for the latest. good morning, lama. >> reporter: good morning. this is a fast developing story. here's what we know. this morning explosion in the engine room at a nuclear plant on france's northern coast sparked a fire injuring at least five people at the plant. the fire is believed to have started by a fan which had a hardware malfunction in the engine room where the electricity is produced. rescuers are at the scene assessing the damage right now. officials have told abc news that there is no risk of a radiation leak calling it a significant technical event, but not a nuclear incident because the fire took place outside the nuclear zone. george. >> okay, lama, thanks very much. >> we'll stay on top of it. to the latest on president trump at odds with his supreme court nominee, judge neal gorsuch who is calling the president's harsh words about the court, quote, demoralizing and disheartening. let's go to our senior white house correspondent cecilia vega for much more on all this. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you.
7:10 am
the ruling on this executive order could come at any time. the president watched that hearing and clearly not happy with what he saw. when it came to his reaction his supreme court nominee not happy. the president is tweeting saying the judge's comments about him are being misrepresentative. judge neal gorsuch meeting with senators on capitol hill. >> good morning. >> reporter: included in his message strong words about the very man who nominated him to the supreme court. his spokesman tells abc news that during a private meeting with one senator, gorsuch described president trump's recent criticism of judges as, quote, demoralizing and disheartening. that senator speaking out too. >> he certainly expressed to me that he is disheartened by the demoralizing and abhorrent comments made by president trump about the judiciary. >> reporter: this comes after the president's own harsh words about the three judges deliberating the appeal of his controversial travel ban.
7:11 am
>> that was disgraceful and it's really incredible to me that we have a court case that's going on so long. >> reporter: now as he awaits a ruling on that travel ban, the president with a stark warning to americans about terrorism. >> believe me, i've learned a lot in the last two weeks, and terrorism is a far greater threat than the people of our country understand. >> reporter: a striking shift from past presidents who have urged americans to be vigilant but not afraid. is there a specific threat that he is talking about and should the american public based on that statement right there be fearful? >> no, but i think the american people should understand that the president's committed to doing this. we face a very, very real threat in isis and radical islamic terrorism and that we've got to do everything -- >> reporter: the reaction from the white house to judge
7:12 am
gorsuch's comments, they seem to be taking it in stride. the president says he wants his nominees to feel free to express their opinion. that seems to be what's happening here. >> except for the president in that tweet. >> reporter: except for the president in that tweet, right. >> now to the fallout on capitol hill after they tried to silence elizabeth warren. during the debate for jeff sessions. he was confirmed as attorney general over night, jeff sessions, and more on tap for today and mary bruce has all the latest. >> reporter: george, good morning. after that contentious battle jeff sessions is now the president's eighth confirmed cabinet nominee and this morning he is bidding farewell to all of this as the senator is sworn in as the next attorney general. >> the nomination is confirmed. >> reporter: finally over the finish line the new attorney general this morning grateful to the colleagues who fought for him. >> i can't express how appreciative i am for those of you who have stood by me during this difficult time.
7:13 am
>> reporter: it was a bitter feud to the very end. >> we're going to fight it. we are going to resist. we will not be -- >> reporter: outraged after senator elizabeth warren was shut down during the debate. >> the senator will take her seat. >> reporter: hauled out after quoting coretta scott king reading a letter she wrote 30 years ago criticizing sessions' record on civil rights. republicans say she disparaged a fellow senator. republicans say you went too far. you broke the rules. >> i don't get to read an historical document that goes to the very essence of the question whether or not jeff sessions is entitled to be the attorney general of the united states. >> reporter: several male senators later reading that same letter without censure. now, mitch mcconnell defended the move against warren saying she was warned but she persisted. that #shepersisted is becoming a rallying cry.
7:14 am
for her supporters. even hillary clinton tweeting about it and getting on board. >> just the beginning. attorney sessions has a lot on his plate. >> reporter: straight out of the gate basing a host of challenges including questions about the president's travel ban and investigations into russia's hacking. george. >> mary bruce, thanks very much. let's talk to our chief white house correspondent jonathan karl here. a tweet put up by the president. he said senator richard blumenthal who never fought in vietnam when he said for years he had, major lie now misrepresents what judge gorsuch told him. this is a little surprising because white house officials as cecilia said they all knew this was coming from judge gorsuch and expected it. >> let me tell you what i know which is white house senior staff clearly knew this was coming, in fact, they even knew the words that gorsuch was going to use. they knew that going into these meetings with democrats, one of the first questions he would be asked would be on trump's attacks on the judiciary. this was his response. the person who confirmed it works for the white house on this, so now to have the president of the united states
7:15 am
say that is baffling. they see this as a good thing in terms of the confirmation battle and needs to create distance with president trump. >> it may help gorsuch a little bit in proving his independence. what it sets up for democrats is making the hearings a lot more about trump than they are about gorsuch. >> that's exactly what democrats will do. they want to tie gorsuch to the most controversial things trump has said. here's the thing that gorsuch has going for him. there's a split among conservatives, judicial conservatives over how active the judiciary should be in reining in executive power. he stands at the end of the spectrum saying it should be quite active in reining in abuse of the executive branch and allows had him to say, look, if trump crosses the line i won't be afraid to stand against him. >> we have seen this before and seemed to pull back at the last minute from vice president pence. it's hard to imagine how he'll take seeing these confirmation hearings, seeing judge gorsuch
7:16 am
if he follows through on what he says yesterday publicly distancing himself from the president. >> yeah, i mean certainly the president's top advisers are fine with this. they see this as actually an effective strategy to get him confirmed which is the goal. but it's going to be interesting to see how it plays out with the president himself. >> jon karl, thanks very much. >> all right, thank you, george. from one brawl to another, this one caught on camera at last night's new york knicks game, former forward charles oakley seen getting into a physical altercation with security guards and jesse palmer is here with more. good morning, jesse. >> good morning, michael. you take a team with a losing season and add fans blaming the owner and top it off with a former player ejected from the stands and charged with assault and you have mayhem in madison square garden. he was one of the most physical players in nba history. >> oakley. >> reporter: and this morning, former new york knicks charles oakley is making headlines again at madison square garden. >> everybody looking over there. apparently charles oakley. >> reporter: this time it's for
7:17 am
causing a melee off the court. >> charles oakley is involved in something. they need security in a big way. >> reporter: the 53-year-old suddenly ejected from his seat while watching the knicks/clippers game by a warm of security. they say he made comments to owner james dolan. >> oakley and the knicks organization have not seen eye to eye recently. >> reporter: oakley charged with three counts of assault adamantly denies the knicks allegation saying he was simply there to support the team. >> i'm like, i've been here 4 1/2 minutes, i'm a knicks fan. played here for ten years. i love the knicks. i love new york. this is my heart. >> reporter: fans showing their support to the man who helped lead the knicks to the 1994 finals chanting, oakley, oakley. overnight oakley was released from custody. his lawyer telling abc news we deny the allegations and will answer them in court. >> a beloved player.
7:18 am
>> not the first to be kicked out of a game although first time for a former player to go through that. a lot more to come. i guess yesterday was the warm before the storm. >> exactly. i like that cue there. we're looking at the snow outside. blowing sideways. that is just going to continue because the winds are going to pick up as this intensifies. some wind gusts expected today. 57 in atlantic city. 44 miles an hour expected in new york city. 55 in boston. that's just east of there where the blizzard warnings are up and hurricane strength potentially in nantucket. with that we've got windchills tonight and tomorrow brutally cold so tomorrow won't be fun either even though snow will be done. minus 1 expected in new york city.
