safely, let's talk about what's going on. i wanted to show you there is a little bit of rainfalling in an area that flooded a lot yesterday, san rafael, larkspur, fairfax, mill valley, kent field, that area. just going to keep it wet for the morning commute. steadier rain moving through the eastern sections in the south bay right now. that's the cold front that brought us all the rain yesterday and here's 101 and 880, definitely wet down there in san jose. heavy drizzle to light rain this morning. noon to isolated but more scattered showers for the evening commute. temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 50s from now in the afternoon hours. it's wet and foggy. we were regular socked in on the golden gate bridge just a few minutes ago. chp issued a dense fog advisory. probably about an hour ago, looking like it thinned out at least where this camera is just a little bit but you need to slow down and increase that following distance on a day like today. 46 minutes, westbound 580, tracy to dublin, westbound 4, antioch

to concord up to 21, the fog not slowing you down. lot of lingering weather issues and closures due to that. we'll talk about that next. we're following breaking news out of berkeley where some car owners getting a pretty rude awakening this morning. >> abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live where crews are working to remove a big tree. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. the neighborhood's getting a rude awakening. seems like chain saws just sound louder at 6:00 in the morning. but crews are hard at work despite the early hour because this tree not only landed on two cars but took some power lines down with it. so they want to get this work done as soon as possible. because it did knock some power out for a few customers this neighborhood. so, they think they're going to be here a while. crews telling me this was a huge pine that fell and they have to move it but still, they're cutting it up right now so it's going to be some time before they clear out. they got the call last night

that the tree landed on two cars. this is a neighborhood nestled right now highway 13 and claremont avenue. there's a lot of trees on the block and crews are worried that more could fall, more power lines could come down so they have blocked you hae a a safe perimeter around themselves, they're keeping us back pretty far, because they're just very concerned about safety. so, this neighborhood is not going to have any kind of a normal morning. power is out. streets are blocked. and the chain saws are pretty loud. reporting live in berkeley, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. new video into the abc7 news room this morning from the south room this morning from the south bay and it shows maens creek. san jose public works crews say the flooding isn't bad enough to close any roads, and they're working now to clean up all that mess. the biggest part of the storm is over, but the north bay still reeling from the damage.

in novato, a 75-foot pine tree came crashing down. it was on a property belonging to a novato fire captain. he was on duty when he heard the call. he said his kids were home at the time. fortunately, everyone is safe. in sonoma county, the russian river is expected to crest around lunchtime and as a result, guerneville school in guerneville is close today. so far that is the only closure that we've heard about. certainly a far cry from yesterday when we had dozens of closures across several bay area counties. we are learning more about the worker killed by a dump truck while cleaning up a mudslide on highway 17. he's been identified as robert gill of los banos. he leaves behind a wife and two kids. the 54-year-old had been with graniterock for more than 15 yea years. >> he was a beloved, well-respected member of our construction team and someone that we are completely devastated by his loss. >> another worker was also

injured by not critically. caltrans issued a statement that read, our deepest sympathies go out to the families of the fallen and injured graniterock construction employees. this is a reminder of the dangers highway workers face. caltrans says work to clear the slide in scotts valley near vine hill road won't resume until that investigation is complete. and we're seeing an outpouring of support on a crowd funding page set up for gill's family. thousands of dollars came in overnight and we have a link set up if you'd like to donate. just go to abc7news.com. 6:04 now. president trump's travel ban remains on hold this morning. a federal appeals court in san francisco decided against reinstating the executive order that he signed two weeks ago. and a 29-page ruling, the court said the argument that the targets muslims presented "significant constitution questions. fts the judges said the government failed to make its case that a temporary freeze on the ban should be lifted so what's next. abc7 news chief legal analyst dan abrams was on gma this morning. >> it could go to the entire 9th

circuit court of aeels and say, we want the whole court to hear this. some people do that. that's unlikely, i think, in this particular scenario. the other choes is to go to the supreme court and appeal this. the problem there is they need five of those eight votes to overturn this stay. i think they're going to recognize that's unlikely. >> the federal government has 14 days to ask the 9th circuit to reconsider its decision. it could also file an emergency appeal with the u.s. supreme court. president trump seems to be changing his tune on the long standed one china policy. he affirmed to the chinese spotlight that the u.s. would honor the policy which considers china and taiwan both inalienable parts of a single china. nerves were rattled right after he was elected when the president had a call with taiwan's president, something no u.s. leader had done in decades. at the time, china warned the president that the one china policy was nonnegotiable. now a live desk update with

much everywhere until you get to 51. highs today about 57 to 61 nearly seasonal, tomorrow a little bit warmer with that extra sunshine, a chilly morning on sunday, 30s and 40s but 50s and 60s for highs. we will take it. and here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. those metering lights on a few minutes later than average today, about 5:34. so normally it's right around 5:30 but i think this friday lighter conditions helping us out just a little bit. and i want to take you down to the scotts valley area as well. highway 17 between vine hill and sugar loaf, of course, only the southbound side is open. the northbound side blocked by that landslide so one lane is getting by in each direction up to about a four-mile backup and you're down to 15 to 7 miles per hour average so you are coming from the santa cruz area, you can expect delays. we'll take a look at drive times coming up next. failure to prevent skas disasters by pg&e like the fatal explosion in san bruno is sparking reform. according to the san jose mercury news, that effort is in

over milo yiannopoulos speech is sparking controversy. the legislation is aimed at protecting free speech on college campuses but listen how this would work. the milo bill was introduced by a tennessee lawmaker. the legislation would prohibit state universities from canceling a speaker if students are protesting. >> universities have forgotten, abandon, and abdicated their responsibility to guarantee the first amendment rights that our constitution sets forward. yes. >> a different tennessee lawmaker, the one you see there, believes the sponsor of the bill is just "sucking up" to breitbart. there is a new survey and it finds that your ethnic background may play a huge role in how much you get paid in you work in the tech industry. hired.com says the average african-american candidate is 50% more likely to get hired but will get paid about $10,000

you can see things are a little slick. richmond total of 4 and nearly 3/4 inch of rain over the last five days. scattered showers, mild highs today, cooler foggy nights and sunny days ahead. tracking the storm for thursday and friday. forget about that. let's talk about what's going on right now. sunol grade through milpitas, it's a little wet. scattered light rain moving through the south bay and also in the santa cruz mountains. today's storm is just a 1. less than 15 hundredths of inch for most areas. my commuting concern is mainly with this morning and to a lesser extent this afternoon. you can see all this moving off to the east by 9:00. it's almost out of here. sunshine breaks out. we'll need the sunglasses at noon and then a small chunk of energy is going to roll through starting at 5:00, scattered showers develop and they'll be around through the evening hours but then it slides away and opens us up to dry weather by saturday morning. rain totals, not much. less than 1/10 inch in most

areas. however up in the sierra, all rain yesterday took down the snow pack, created some sierra cement but good news, new snow is falling on top of it so there will be powder waiting for you and sunshine this weekend. my accuweather 7 day forecast, 30s and 40s, our warmers afternoon, low to upper 60s tuesday. wednesday's our last dry day. toyota tahoe ski report, guess who's got the details for you. oh yeah and it is not going to be easy to get up there today. -80, chains are required. u.s. 50, chains from twin bridges to meyers. 89, chains and then a few areas that are closed due to mudslides. so some of that happened yesterday and yeah, going to be pretty treacherous drive. i saw mike mentioning that those base totals were down just a few inches there for squaw al pine, northstar and heavenly compared to yesterday and some of the folks who tried to ski yesterday in that rain said it was a hot, welt mess. it was not a lot of fun so

potentially bad news in for the central valley commute. remember a couple days ago when we had that huge pothole open up just past altamont pass. we've got another one just before that, westbound 580 near north flynn road, at least three vehicles already have flat tires. they're on the right shoulder and they are calling for caltrans to come out to the scene likely to make repairs so this could potentially be a major issue. take a look at that drive time coming up. once again this morning, we're looking at a mudslide problem in the santa cruz mountains. >> this is not far from the always troublesome highway 17. abc7 news reporter matt keller is there live this morning. >> reporter: good morning, natasha. since i last saw you, it actually rained a little bit up here in the santa cruz mountains. they don't need any more rain. it's already saturated and there's so many issues up here in the santa cruz mountains. last night at 7:00, the santa cruz public works department updated their website and showed there were 48 incidents all up

here in the mountains. there are a lot more now, overnight. this is one of them. this is bear creek road. this is closed off because of mudslides, trees down, power lines down, you name it, it's happened on this road and just down the road from here is black road. it happened at about 1:00 this morning just south of gist road. another mudslide and a pickup truck with a trailer came up on it and couldn't turn around so get this, the chp officers got out in the pouring rain, helped take the trailer off, turn it around and reattach it not truck so the people inside could drive out. all of this while they were standing in a very dangerous area. >> well, it's a rather steep cliff, full of mud and water, and probably not too fun to go down there. >> reporter: they were all able to get out of the area just fine, but check out how much water was pouring off in that area. and i want you to see my foot right now because i just stepped into a major puddle here.

look how deep this is. this is all the water coming off the mountain here and just going down along the hillside. that is what is causing all the mudslides up here, just so much water, it is saturated. so be careful out there when you're driving. you never know when you're going to come across another mudslide. reporting live in the santa cruz mountains, matt keller, abc7 news. this morning, chp looking for witnesses of a deadly dump truck accident in the santa cruz mountains. the victim has been identified as robert gill, but everyone called him bobby. the 54-year-old was working for graniterock construction, cleaning up a mudslide in scotts valley when he was hit and killed yesterday. a second employee was also hit but his injuries are not critical. our media partner "the mercury news" reports chp tracking down witnesses and 911 callers to get their accounts. work to clear the slide along highway 17 has been suspended and will not resume until the investigation is complete. many of you posting moving messages to bobby gill and his family as well as heartfelt

thanks to workers who keep our roads safe. go to abc7 news facebook page and leave your comments. in sonoma county, voluntary evacuations are underway this morning along the russian river. the county opened the emergency operations center late last night. we did check with mike nicco. that river is now 33.3 feet. it is expected to crest at nearly 36 feet later around 1:00 this afternoon. and it's going to remain at or above flood levels until early tomorrow morning. to the east bay now, mudslides continue to be a problem there. you can take a look an your screen. the damage to a car on knickerbockers lane. this volkswagen got stuck in about 6 inches of mud last nigh. the mudslide caused a sinkhole and a gas leak. city leaders in orinda are warning that more rain could make this huge slide even worse. you can see mud, trees, debris, two football fields long. that came crashing down on to the home. it was yellow tagged yesterday

morning but red tagged by the end of the day because of all the rain. the city says the danger is not over yet. >> the pressure that this hillside is putting on this house is just -- it's phenomenal how much mother nature can push around things that are in its way. >> the homeowner told abc7 news reporter laura anthony he heard the slide first, it sounded like thunder, and then he saw it coming. neighbors have been warned to be ready to go at a moment's notice. laura anthony got inside the home and shared these pictures on twitter. you can see by following us @abc7newsbayarea. 6:35 now. this morning, lawyers in virginia are challenging president trump's travel ban in federal court. the state's attorney general says it is the most significant state challenge yet. this comes one day after the 9th circuit court of appeals in san francisco refused to lift a temporary restraining order on the ban. shortly after yesterday's ruling, president trump tweeted

not granting the stay. the ruling is 29 pages long and you can read it for yourself right now. georgia congressman tom price will be the nation's next secretary of health and human services. the senate confirmed his nomination in a vote that democrats managed to delay until almost 11:00 last night. democrats oppose price's support for revamping the medicare program. republicans say price are will help overhaul obamacare. happening today, president trump is set to meet with japanese prime minister shinzo abe. abe will become the second world leader to meet with trump since the inauguration. according to japanese media reports, abe is expected to unveil a proposal to invest $150 billion in u.s. infrastructure and that includes california's high-speed rail product. lawyers for ghost ship warehouse manager derrick almena are blaming the biggest fire tragedy in oakland history on city firefighters. these lawyers say they analyzed the same documents abc7 news reviewed on wednesday, combined with what else they've gathered, they claim that firefighters

could have saved more people. almena's attorney say firefighters made mistakes and have problems with leadership. 36 people died. among these claims, they say firefighters didn't take immediate action after being informed that there was smoke and people trapped inside of the building. the lawyers say firefighters didn't use ladders to get to the second story windows. they also claim there was no attempt to rescue people before going to a defensive fire mode to put out the fire. and the lawyers say a fire chief arrived more than an hour after the fire started. the documents abc7 reviewed show firefighters arrived 79 seconds after the first alarm went off. we have reached out to the city of oakland and the lawyers for derrick almena. so far, no response. of course we'll stay on top of this and let you know as soon as we hear back. i want to show you the images i'm seeing here at the live desk right now. this is a ceremony underway,

yesterday, we're still in the mid 50s throughout san francisco and low to mid 50s just about every where else. the warm spot, palo alto at 58 degrees, the cool shot, healdsburg at about 50. we're going to top out about 57 to 62. you'll need the sunglasses but also have scattered showers in the forecast during the afternoon and evening hours. they will taper tonight. we'll have patchy fog and partly cloudy conditions, 39 in santa rosa to about 47 in san francisco. so, one more round of rain and then it's over. i'll show you some sunshine coming up in the accuweather 7 day forecast next. how about that soggy commute, alexis. we're still seeing the effects of yesterday's storm and all this wet weather. this is a look at video from a few hours ago. our crew captured this on state route 35 just north of the 84 and the woodside area. and this is basically skyline at la honda road just north of that interchange. you can see four to five large trees down. power lines down too so they very quickly were able to get the power turned off but that is going to be a long-term clean-up
