to follow. ♪ live, where you live, this is abc 7 news. >> good morning, everyone. i am carolyn tyler. thank you for joining us on this sunday, february 12th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist, lisa argen. >> it's certainly colder this morning. we are clear but with our waterlogged hillsides and the water still trying to recede we have a flood warning up from central sonoma county and into clear lake. the bigger picture, high pressure is build into the bay area and that's going to keep it cool but dry. 38, san ramon, and elsewhere, upper 40s in san francisco and 40s in santa rosa.

throughout the day today, you will notice all that sunshine. temperatures starting out in the 30s in some of the cooler locations. by noontime, we are in the low to mid-50s, and by this afternoon we're talking 60s. increasing clouds tonight. the rain returns. i will tell you when and for how long coming up. >> thank you, lisa. berkeley police are investigating the suspicious deaths of a couple inside their berkeley apartment. it's the second time in a month something like this has happened in that city. 89-year-old woman was found dead in her bed yesterday morning, and her boyfriend was also dead on the ground beside her. and our abc news reporter has more. >> their relationship was real close. >> they were in love, and their age difference did not phase them and they lived and died

together in this apartment. the small apartment was hot and the carbon monoxide alarm was going off. police still don't know what caused the couple's death. family, meantime, rushed to the scene and worry the circumstances sound eerie hrae familiar to these two found dead in their apartment last month, and they died of carbon monoxide poisoning. >> it's the same situation, but to an older couple. >> and they still do not know the source of the ash. the neighbors were shocked to hear of the latest deaths. >> i don't want that to start becoming an epidemic around here. that's not a good thing. >> these loved ones want answers

fast. dora was recently withiwith i ite reupb cancer. she did not have long to live. he was her caretaker. >> she was going to let you know that you could be loved. >> both, dora and gary lived in berkeley their entire lives. abc 7 news. police are investigating a deadly shooting in pal petious that could be connected to a crime spree. police got a call about a man with two guns running from a car crash late saturday night, and then officers arrived they heard a gunshot coming from an apartment parking garage, and a car sped out leading them on a short chase before it crashed. police arrested the driver inside the parking garage, and

officers found one man dead from a gunshot wound. terrifying moments in southern california after a man and his daughter were rescued frm flash flood waters. santa clarita sheriff's tweeted this video of the rescue yesterday afternoon. two cars were trying to cross a canyon road when they got stuck. crews were able to pull everybody to safety, but this is another important reminder to follow all flash flood warnings. here in the bay area, it's been sunny this weekend, but our recent storms continue to take a toll on several roads. in santa clara county, highway 35 is closed indefinitely after a washout. sky 7 was above the crater as crews inspected the damage. the earth opened up and swallowed a large chunk of the highway. to the santa cruz county where a large portion of highway 17 was

opened yesterday morning, and it's now partially open in both directions near vine hill road. a landslide on the highway on thursday killed a worker trying to clear the massive slide and pinned another worker under a track. and then the wife of a police officer killed is reflecting on the past year. one year ago this weekend her husband was killed as he intervened in a domestic dispute. here's abc 7 news reporter, melanie woodrow. >> on the porch of her new home, sandra vegas said it took several moves to finally find what felt right. >> we needed a quiet place because the story was so loud. >> that story unfolding one year ago today, just after 4:30 a.m., sandra's husband, gus vegas, intervened in a domestic dispute involving his daughter and grandson's father, and it cost him his life.

>> it was not just, you know, your average murder. there was so much to it because of where it happened, and who -- you know, who it was. >> sandra said she considered robert vaga her son, and she forgave him immediately afterwards, and his trial is scheduled for may. sandra says she has seen him in court and spoken to him on the phone. >> he told me he loved me, and that he loved, you know, i love pops. i just told him, i forgive you and love you. >> officer vegas was a 15-year veteran and worked as a patrol officer and detective in several units including homicide. at home he was a family man, a father to ten children, and twice as many grandchildren. >> it has changed all of our lives so much. >> sandra says it's hardest on his daughters who was in the house when he died. >> we said we were never going there was no answer. >> she credits the city of

vallejo, richmond police department, her family and especially her faith for holding her up then and now. in vallejo, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> now to major news overseas. the white house monitoring north korea after that country fired a ballistic missile for the first time since donald trump became president. president trump and japanese prime minister, abe, held a brief nooews conference last night, and abe called north korea's actions untolerable, and president trump said the united states stands behind japan 100%, and kim jong-un announced there would be a missile test and it traveled 300 miles toward the sea of japan, and it was an intermediate range missile capable of flying up to 3,400 miles.

a funding fight for planned parenthood brought out both sides of the abortion debate nationwide this weekend. abc 7 news reporter, lonny rivera, was in redwood city for yesterday's duelling rallies there. >> vote child. vote baby. anti-death. >> two sides in a decade-old debate voiced their opinions. >> we want the abortion part of planned parent hood to be defunded so taxpayer money isn't going to pay for something a lot of the taxpayers don't believe in. >> reporter: they are gathering signatures to push the movement. >> the first ones that have rights are those that don't have anybody defending them. all of us have rights to life. >> across the street, a counter protest with abortion rights activist. >> a lot of people who are down, who feel like the world they thought they lived in cease to

exist, and the only thing that works is action. >> tell me what democracy looks like? this is what democracy looks like! >> and they put those concerns into action by notifying others through social media. >> 3% of the services that are done by planned parenthood, 3% are abortion, and most of them are education and getting contraception, which prevents abortion. >> nobody is saying you have to have an abortion. >> citizens for a pro-life society say most of the rallies at planned parenthood clinics drew large opponents, and a lot expected it given the election of donald trump. >> you can say we are for health care, for the unborn, too. >> both sides committed to moving their message forward. in redwood city, abc 7 news. a community rallied behind a young girl whose reunion with

her family was in jeopardy because of the travel ban. members of the community joined the mayor and congressman, jim costa, to officially welcome her. she was all smiles when she was handed a backpack full of school supplies. the family flew her to sfo while the ban is temporarily on hold. a flight headed to san francisco from austin, texas, arrived hours late last night because of the pilot, a passenger tweeted the pilot got on to the flight in street clothes and then went on a rant about donald trump and hillary clinton. the passenger says the pilot apologized saying she is going through a divorce, and the police took her off the flight and the airline replaced her.

anniversary. oakland mayor made the proclamati proclamation. he once served as the public affairs director at the port of oakland. it's considered one of the country's top 10 contain jerzy ports and once was a supply center for the troops in the vietnam war and world war ii. >> the orville dam began flow into an emergency spillway for the first time ever yesterday. it poses no imminent threat and should end early this week. there has been so much rain and melted snow the water flow knocked away a chunk of the main spillway last week. it will have to be fixed at a later date. water officials say social media rumors that the dam in north

sacramento is in danger are not true, however use of the emergency spillway has caused an evacuation of the feather river fish hatchy that holds one-third of the state's salmon, and workers need to relocate 8 million fish and eggs. driving to lake htahoe is still tricky if you plan to take highway 50, and you will see this sign showing the highway is blocked here. there have been two large landslides in the area, including this one that buried a jeep on friday. a second slide happened yesterday afternoon. they hope to open the highway by 6:00 tonight. a cal trans camera shows 80 through the sierra, and the entire roadway opened after a major landslide west of blue canyon on friday, and after

clearing the side the workers had to make sure the hill was safe for drivers to pass through. hundreds of thousands of people flocked to san francisco yesterday to celebrate the year of the rooster with the city's annual chinese new year's parade. abc 7 news anchor, eric thomas, has more on one of the city's time honored traditions. the year of the rooster is starting off with a bang. >> big crowds gathered to see the fireworks at the chinese new year's parade. >> i like the dragon. >> dancing dragons are always a favorite. there's a lot to consider to make sure these parades go right. >> i usually look through the mouth. >> but this year, roosters were everywhere on the floats and in the crowd, and it's an event that brings out the entire city, young and old.

mateo. good morning, fremont. look at the 52 by the delta. that's a northerly wind, up to 22 miles per hour. so that's why we are so mild there, and with the lack of wind we're awfully cool, a lot cooler elsewhere around the bay. it's certainly chilly this morning. sunny skies today and more clouds on the horizon tomorrow, and we will look for rain returning on thursday. so we will time it out for you, but we are also going to enjoy the temperatures today, which in some spots will be warmer than yesterday. check out that 64. concord, antioch and livermore and san jose with perhaps 66. santa rosa, and napa, and upper 50s along the coast. the northerly winds looking to bring us a very nice afternoon. the next seven days featuring a chance of rain on late wednesday, and a 2 on the storm impact scale, and then on thursday this system looks to hit southern california and we are looking at gusty winds out ahead of this system on thursday, and perhaps one to two inches, so it's another strong

spike in the gas bills of pg & e customers. jerry hill who represents san mateo says his office launched an investigation, and some customers say their gas and electric bills skyrocketed in the last few months. 7 on your side's michael finney reports. >> these homeowners met each other while venting about utility bills on the social network next door. >> we all started realizing that our bills are going up increasingly anywhere between 50 to 80%. >> pg & e confirms rates went up 21% in the last year alone with the bulk of the increase coming in august. >> this time the increase was dramatically high. >> but customers did not notice until they turned on their heaters this summer. >> we had several rate changes over the course of last year and

that's primarily to fund projects that will benefit safety and reliability of the gas and electricity systems. >> it rate increase was proposed in 2014 and approved by the utilities commission last year, and the utility reform network says that decision also includes another rate increase in 2018, of at least 5%. >> does it make me angry? of course. it's money we have to pay out of our pockets.infuriatinfuriating. who is looking out for the consumer. >> there's a fine against pg & e related to the san bernardino fire in 2010, and that will negate any rate increase in 2017. >> the cdpc is really the body that is responsible, and for those of us who are upset about high utility bills, we really

steven miller and washington state attorney general come to "this week" with george stephanopoulos at 8:00 this morning right here on abc 7. it appears the white house is backing away from former president trump's right to protect bathroom rights for transgender students. the department of justice has withdrawn the motion filed by the last presidency, and the obama administration wanted an injunction blocking his bathroom directive to affect the 13 states suing to remove it. a hearing about the request was set for tuesday, and now it's canceled because the filing has been withdrawn. the original directive forced public schools to allow students to use bathrooms consistent with their gender identities. now to a story of a thank you two decades in the making. abc news anchor, tom kwrauplious, has the story.

pretty much dead, you -- you looked terrible. >> jennifer and courtney still have some scars from that night, but they survived thanks to these officers. >> you can read things, and seeing it, what they saw and what they did, they are heroes. >> 20 years later, those officers are thankful they never gave up. some sad news to report this morning, former syracuse center died in his home country of brazile. he was found dead yesterday. he died in his sleep. it's not clear how. mellow was drafted by the celtics in the first round of the 2012 draft. his former coach at syracuse tweeted, i'm very sorry to hear about the passing of fab melo, and he was committed to doing his best a while at syracuse. he was 26 years old. the american army officer
