good morning, everybody. thank you for joining us on this sunday, february 12th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist, lisa argen. >> good morning, everybody. it's certainly cold out, i know much colder than it has been due to the clear sky and light winds, and we are starting up in central sonoma county where a flood warning continues until

8:30, so definitely streams and creeks still in the bay area running very high. how about clear lake of nearly 10 feet, and the flood stage is 9.8. this stays in effect until wednesday. the rest of us are waiting for the afternoon with sunny skies and mid-60s, and 42 in san mateo, and you have the wind out by the delta and some areas of the coastline. at 7:00, when the sun is up, we will see 30s and 40s, and maybe some low 50s by the afternoon. in the low to mid-50s, and 4:00, how about mid-60s arriving in some inland areas. upper 50s at the coast, and changes arrive as soon as tomorrow with increasing clouds and we will check the next rain maker coming our way coming up. berkeley investigating suspicious deaths inside the

berkeley apartment, second time in a month something like this happened in that city. appear mother found dead in her bed by her son, and her boyfriend was also dead on the ground beside her. >> their relationship was real close. >> dora and gary were in love. their 33-year age difference did not phase them. they lived and died together in this apartment. >> the heater is on and may be due to the heater. >> the small apartment was hot and the carbon monoxide alarm was going off. police still don't know what caused the couple's death, and family rushed to the scene and worry the circumstances sound familiar to miles away where two bodies were found in an apartment last month, and they died from carbon monoxide

poisoning. >> same thing with my grandmother, and we don't feel there was foul play, it's the same situation but to an older couple. >> and the polineighbors were shocked to hear of the latest deaths. >> i don't want that to start an epidemic around here. that's not a good thing. >> these loved ones want answers fast. >> we just lost two people that still should be here. >> dora was recently diagnosed with cancer and did not have long to live, and gary became her caretaker. the 89-year-old did not let the cancer change her. >> she was going to keep it 100 with you all the way across the board, and was not going to be sugar coating it or nice because your feelings were hurt, and she would finish hurting them for you and she would let you know you could be loved. >> they both lived in berkeley their entire lives. abc 7 news.

police are investigating a deadly shooting in milpitas that could be connected to a crime spree. they received a call about a man running with a gun down main street and then a woman called police saying a man stole her car at gunpoint and when officers arrived they heard a gunshot at a parking lot garage, and then police arrested the driver and inside the parking garage they found one man dead from a gunshot wound. terrifying moments in southern california after a man and his daughter were rescued from flash flood waters. santa clarita police department shot this video yesterday afternoon. two cars were trying to cross a road when they got stuck, and crews were trying to pull everybody to safety, and this is an important reminder to follow all flash flood warnings. back in the bay area, it's

been sunny, but the weather taking a toll on the roads. highway 35 is closed even definitely after a washout. sky 7 was above the crater as crews inspected damage. the earth opened up swallowing a large chunk of the highway. to santa cruz county where the chp opened up a lane of northbound 17 yesterday morning, and it's now partially open in both directions in scott's valley near vine hill road. a landslide on the highway thursday killed a worker trying to clear the massive slide, and pinned another worker underneath a truck. the wife of a respected richman police officer killed while off duty is reflecting on the past year. it was a year ago this weekend her husband, officer gus vegas, was killed as he intervened in a domestic dispute. here's abc 7 news reporter,

melanie woodrow. >> on the porch of her new home sandra vega said it took several moves to find what felt right. >> we needed a quiet place because the story was so loud. >> that story unfolding one year ago today, just after 4:30 a.m., gus vegas intervened in a domestic dispute involving his daughter and grandson's father, and it cost him his life. >> it was not just your average murder. there was so much to it because of where it happened, and who, you know, who it was. >> sandra says she considered robert vega her son. she says she forgave him immediately afterwards. his trial is scheduled for may. sandra said she has seen him in court and spoken to him on the phone. >> he told me he loved me and he loved -- you know, i love pops. i just told him, i forgive you and love you.

>> officer vaga worked as a police officer and detective in several units, including homicide. at home he was a family man, a father to ten children and twice as many grandchildren. >> it has changed all of our lives so much. >> sandra says it's hardest on his daughter who was in the house when he died. >> we said we would never try to figure it out. there was no answer. >> she credits the city of vallejo, richmond police department, and her family and especially her faith for holding her up then and now. in vallejo, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. now to developing news overseas, and the white house monitoring north korea after that country fired a ballistic missile for the first time since donald trump became president. president trump and japanese prime minister abe held a brief news conference last night at a

club in florida. trump says the united states stands behind japan 100%. north korean leader, kim jong-un, announced in his new year's message there would be a missile test, and the missile traveling 300 miles toward the sea of japan, and a senior u.s. official said it was an intermediate range missile capable of flying up to 3,400 miles. a funding fight for planned parenthood brought out both sides of the abortion debate nationwide this weekend. and we were there for yesterday's duelling rallies there. >> reporter: two sides in a decade's old debate voiced opinions about planned parenthood. >> we don't want taxpayer money

to go for something a lot of the taxpayers don't believe in. >> they are pushing the movement to defund planned parenthood. >> the first ones having the rights are those not having anybody defending them. >> across the street, a counter protest with abortion rights activist. >> a lot of people who are down who feel like the world they thought they lived in ceases to exist. the only thing that works is action. >> tell me what democracy looks like? >> this is what democracy looks like! >> and putting those concerns into action by notifying otherwise through social media. >> 3% of the services that are done by planned parenthood, 3% are abortion, and most of them are education, and getting contraception, which presreptve abortion. >> citizens for a pro life society say most of the rallies

at planned parenthood clinics drew a large crowd of opponents, and the crowd expected it given the election of donald trump. >> you can look at it and say we are for health care, health care for the unborn, too. >> opposing views, and both sides committed to moving their message forward. redwood city, abc 7 news. a community rallied behind a young girl whose reunion with her family was in jeopardy because of the travel ban. members of the community joins the mayor to officially welcome her. she was all smiles as she was handed a backpack filled with school supplies. it took her family seven years to get her a visa to travel to the u.s. from yemen, and the visa arrived just one day before the president's immigration ban. the family thrflew her to sfo we the ban is temporarily on hold. a flight from san francisco

to texas arrived late last night because of the pilot. a passenger tweeted the pilot got on to the flight in street clothes and then went on a rant about president trump and hillary clinton. the passengers says the pilot then apologized, saying she was going through a divorce. police ended up taking her off the flight. the airline replaced her. united sent us a message saying they hold all their employees to the highest standards, and apologizing to customers for the inconvenience. take a look. this may be the most unique protest against president trump yet. thousands of people gathered on ocean beach in san francisco and spelled out the word resist with their bodies. a man from san francisco organized the event and hired a pilot to take the pictures from a helicopter. similar protests were held in new york yesterday. a lot of us want to know how

the weather will be this week. >> shouldn't have any weather problems at least until late wednesday, and it's going to be quiet out there, but you are definitely noticing the chill where temperatures dropped off several degrees. and we have 30s elsewhere around the bay. we will be talking about more 60s today before increasing clouds and a return to wet weather, and that's next in the accuweather 7-day forecast. also ahead, the port of oakland celebrating a big milestone today. how its rich history impacted the bay area. and hundreds of thousands turn out to celebrate the chinese new year. the annual parade that's become a tradition in san francisco.

the north and the south are mine. all seems beautiful to me. the port of oakland is celebrating its 90-year anniversary with today's date named in its honor. the oakland mayor made the proclamation. she once served as public affairs director at the port of oakland and said the port has had an incredible impact on the region and nation and the world and it's considered one of the country's top 10 seaports and once served as a supply center for world war troops and the vietnam and korean war.

and then water running into the spillway for the first time yesterday, and the release poses no imminent threat and should end early this week. there has been so much rain and melted snow the flow knocked away a chunk of the dam last week, and it will be fixed at a later date. use of the emergency spillway has caused an immediate evacuation of the feather river fish hatchery, and workers need to relocate 8 million fish and eggs. driving to lake tahoe is still tricky if you are planning to take highway 50, and drivers will show these signs with highways blocked east of the pines. there have been two landslides

in that area, and a second slide happened yesterday afternoon. they hope to re-open the highway by 6:00 tonight. a cal transcamera shows traffic moving again on i-80 through the sierra. the entire freeway re-opened after a major landslide just west of blue canyon on friday. after clearing that slide, crews had to make sure, of course, that the hillside was safe for drivers to pass through. hundreds of thousands of people flocked to san francisco yesterday to celebrate the year of the rooster with the city's annual chinese new year's parade. abc 7 news anchor, erin thomas, has more on one of the city's time-honored traditions. >> the year of the rooster is starting off with a bang, through china town, big crowds gathered to see the fireworks

warmer in some spots. here's a live look where you can see how clear it is, and if we had a little less wind we probably would have fog. right now it's still, and that has allowed for cooling. and this is san jose 101, and half moon bay, 45. look at this, isn't this pretty? the sun coming up just after 7:00. livermore is at 45. and for the time being, the winds that kicked up overnight that did allow for the fog to stay at bay, and tonight we will see more fog and a final look in santa cruz where it was cooler on the coast with upper 50s, and today, wow, i will tell you today is going to be the next day out of the next seven because we will have the most sunshine and still mild from day-to-day and clouds increase as soon as tomorrow, and then rain returns with the wind, and it's a quick mover, though, on thursday. high temperatures today cutting right to the chase here in the mid-60s from san jose,

livermore, conqueredncord, and 50s at the coast. it's going to be a gorgeous afternoon, but notice overnight tonight we will get fog and high to mid-level clouds and that will allow for partly cloudy skies tomorrow. still on the mild side with filters sunshine. the next seven days while featuring a return to the wet weather by late wednesday, and maybe a few sprinkles. it's thursday when we bring in the storm impact scale, and this one brings gusty winds ahead of the system, and the next one behind it looks to be sinking south and head into southern california, and second half of the weekend, though, does look wet. so with this 2 on the storm impact scale, it will be a rainy morning and afternoon showers at this point and it could change between now and then, and the flooding potential due to the saturated grounds and the strong southerly wind. could see wind from the north bay, and then by late on thursday it looks to be a break. here we are in saturday, and

but we still have concerns in the north bay about flooding. still a flood warning until 8:30 this morning around central s sonoma county, the creek running high at about 61 feet, and clear lake, a flood warning through wednesday, and this is nearly 10 feet. as we look at the east bay hills camera this morning, it's beautiful. 38 in gilroy, and 45 at the coast, and the sun is up a little after 7:00, and temperatures are hovering in the low 40s in the north bay. san jose, 101, you will see sunshine today. yesterday we saw numbers in the upper 60s, and we will get there but it will be cool in the early morning hours, and 50s by noontime or thereabouts and we will look for the numbers today to be a couple degrees warmer than yesterday. ted cruz spoke yesterday at

several gop-organized town halls across his state and the meetings were to discuss obamacare and cruz took the opportunity to criticize the ninth circuit court and their decision to hold up the order. >> the statute gives the president the authority, and the ninth circuit court of appeals was lost, and i believe if and when this case is appealed to the u.s. supreme court i believe it will be reversed. >> those that support the court's decision says the president violated due process, and to restrict green card holders, it must give them a hearing. and trump says he knows

nothing about speaking to the russian officials. >> they say before michael flynn became security adviser he contacted russia's ambassador and warned him the obama administration planned sanctioned for interfering in the presidential election. >> it's not just, oh, this subject came up. it is flynn was conveying a signal here, a clear signal to the russian ambassador, don't overreact to these sanctions the obama team is announcing. we will have time to revisit this later. >> vice president mike pence originally said it was false and his office said he was just conveying what he had been told and he will now look into the report. democrats called for an investigation, and now the cia denied a security clearance for one of flynn's top aides. the super bowl champs visiting the white house is an annual tradition but a growing

group of patriots' players will boycott this year. the president hosted the owner of the patriots friday night, and president trump and kraft are old friends, and some players are not fans of the president, and so far six have said they will not attend the white house visit. running back blunt said about the boycott, i don't feel welcome in that house. a newspaper in the dominican republic apologized for using a fake image of president trump. there was a photo of alec baldwin playing the president on "saturday night live," and it shows anyplace a photo next to the israel prime minister, netanyahu, and it was a mistake that went unnoticed by the staff. and then a temporary travel ban, and white house senior paul

g policy adviser comes to "this week" with george stephanopoulos here on abc 7. the white house is backing away from president obama's fight on bathroom guidance, and it only applies to the 13 states suing to remove it. that guidance directs public schools to allow transgender students to use bathrooms and locker rooms consistent with their gender identity. a federal judge temporarily blocked the directive nationwide last year. now to a story of a thank you two decades in the making. abc news anchor, tom yamsa has the story. >> the images are haunting, the

police officers running with not one, but two bodies. >> saw footprints, and there was too many prints to follow. it was scary. >> 3-year-old twins wondered outside in the middle of the night, below zero temperatures in the half of feet of snow, and police officers race to the scene and 45 minutes later the girls were found in an alley freezing. >> your hands, ice hands. >> that was 20 years ago. those twins survived. now finally they have met the officers that saved their lives to thank them. >> i was over here and i walked across and started looking. >> the girls and their parents watched the video from that night and the officers walking them through the painful search. >> just seeing her, you know, pretty much dead, you -- you look the terrible.

>> jennifer and quacourtney sti have scars from that night, but survived thanks to these officers. >> you can read things, and like, seeing it, what they saw and what they did, they are heroes. >> 20 years later, those officers are thankful they never gave up. some sad news in the sports world this morning. former syracuse and boston celtic's center, fab melo died in his home country of brazile, and he was found dead in his sleep. his former coach at syracuse tweeted, i'm very sorry to here the passing of fab melo, and he was committed to doing his best while at syracuse. fab melo was 26 years old. the american army officer that fought the first major battle between u.s. forces and the north vet tphietnamese army

died, and he was portrayed by mel gibson in the movie about the battle called "we were soldiers." in 1965, he commanded a battalion against a much larger enemy force, and he brought out most of his soldiers alive. moore retired after 32 years as a lieutenant general. he died friday at his alabama home. he was 94 years old. still ahead on abc 7 mornings, a classic game show gets a bay area twist. you will only find it in san francisco. here's a live look from the abc 7 exploratorium camera at pier 15. clouds today, but later giving way to sunny skies and a light wind, but a storm on level 2 on our impact scale is going to appear later this week.

clouds. the next seven days we're looking at a dry first half of the week, and wednesday increasing clouds, sprinkles late, and then a 2 on the storm impact scale for thursday. the system behind it looks to scoot into southern california, and then looking at a wet weekend. remember, this is a week out but we want to get you prepared because the soils are so saturated. we have runoffs and flooding concerns in sonoma county, and looking at the morning rain and afternoon showers on thursday, flooding potential is there. we are looking at one to two inches with this system, so it's a significant one with gusty winds come thursday morning. you have a sloppy commute on thursday but looking like a quick-mover, it should be out of here for the second half of the day. friday looks dry as well as saturday, but sunday the rain returns. it could last into next week, monday and tuesday. overnight lows with the fog,
