an emotional tribute that caught everyone by surprise. got to love live tv as it was the case last night at the grammys. and we do say good morning to you, everybody. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm eva pilgrim in for diane. we begin with that breaking news, the emergency at the oroville dam in northern california. >> so, the main spillway was damaged last week by the heavy rain. the emergency spillway is now also damaged and on the verge of giving way. if that happens, an uncontrolled wave of water could wash away several nearby communities. abc's stephanie ramos tracking the developments. >> reporter: in northern california, a state of emergency as water gushes from the nation's tallest dam forcing more than 100,000 people from their homes. >> we got a few clothing, we got our pets and a few like medical necessities, but other than that, we -- it was pretty chaotic. >> reporter: the oroville dam

sits north of sacramento and holds water back from lake oroville now at record levels and in danger of spilling over into towns after a series of storms and snow. >> we need to give the department of water resources time to thoroughly evaluate the situation so that we can make some decisions as to whether or not it is safe to repopulate the areas. >> reporter: last week chunks of concrete flew off the nearly mile-long main spillway creating a 200-foot-long, 30-foot-deep hole. this has never happened before and it forced dam managers to hold off on releasing water even as the dam reached its limits. officials then trying a never before used emergency spillway. >> the efforts by dwr to lower the lake level by utilizing the spillway to reduce the water has been effective, and now there's no more water going over the emergency spillway.

>> reporter: engineers don't know what caused the cave-in that is expected to keep growing until it reaches bedrock. >> you can see that really the full power of the state of california has been made available in support of butte county and the surrounding counties during this situation. >> reporter: stephanie ramos, abc news. >> and we will keep an eye on that throughout the day. but, meanwhile, in southern california, three people had to be rescued after flash flooding turned a road into a raging river. firefighters used their aerial ladders to pull a father and young daughter from a vehicle both drivers trying to cross a road where water was flowing. without serious injury. and there's also extreme weather on the other side of the country where another major snowstorm is taking aim at the northeast. take a right now you can see upstate new york and new england on the receiving end of a one-two punch with as much as two more feet of

snow overnight along with very strong winds. >> the region got some snow yesterday afternoon and then rain. now the snow is returning. many new england schools are closed today. accuweather's cam tran is tracking the storm. cam. >> good morning, eva and kendis. it's going to be a travel nightmare today across new england thanks to this powerful nor'easter that's making its way up the coastline. we are looking at blizzard-like conditions across northern new england with wind gusts over 50 miles per hour, and we're looking at heavy snowfall, as well. places like boston, we're looking at 6 to 12 inches of snowfall. across northern new england from portland to bangor about two sn have a separate storm system in the south that will bring rain across the lone star state. back to you, eva and kendis. >> all right, our thanks to cam tran there. and we're going to turn our focus now to politics and what's kicking off as a very busy week four for the donald trump presidency. >> the president is back at the white house today returning last night aboard air force one after spending the weekend at his mar-a-lago estate in florida. >> he plans to welcome canadian prime minister justin trudeau today for a white house roundtable on women in the

workforce. it's largely organized by his daughter ivanka trump. they'll reportedly focus on recruiting and retaining women in the workforce. and it comes after a weekend of entertaining another world leader, the japanese prime minister, the two bonding over golf avoiding delving too deeply into the thorny issues of trade and monetary policy, but they both presented a united front after north korea announced it successfully test launched a new ballistic missile into the sea of japan. shinzo abe called the launch tolerable. president trump pledged u.s. support for japan 100%. week four of the donald trump presidency has another white house adviser facing fresh scrutiny. >> yeah, we're talking about stephen miller who repeated claims of voter fraud in new hampshire to abc's george stephanopoulos on "this week" but offered no proof. here's abc's gloria riviera. >> reporter: the trump team doubling down on more unproven claims of massive voter fraud. >> voter fraud is a serious problem in this country. >> reporter: president trump's

senior white house policy adviser stephen miller telling george stephanopoulos on "this week" that trump narrowly lost in new hampshire due to illegal voters. >> i can tell you this issue of busing voters into new hampshire is widely known by anyone who has worked in new hampshire politics. it's very real, it's very serious. >> you can't make -- hold on a second. you just claimed again that there was illegal voting in new hampshire. people bused in from the state of massachusetts. do you have any evidence to back that up? >> anybody -- george, go to new hampshire. talk to anybody who has worked in politics there for a long time. >> reporter: after that exchange a veteran gop operative who worked for senator john mccain firing back at miller on twitter. john weaver tweeting, i know new hampshire as well as anyone. no voter fraud. buses easy to track. force them to prove it, they can't. miller repeating other claims the trump team has made before. >> you have millions of people who are registered in two states or who are dead who are registered to vote. >> reporter: in fact, members of

trump's own team and family were registered to vote in two states on election day. that includes chief strategist steve bannon and daughter tiffany. gloria riviera, abc news, washington. >> okay, that said, president trump's national security adviser is also trying to weather his own crisis this morning. michael flynn may have misled top officials including the vic conversations with the russian ambassador about lifting sanctions several weeks before the president took office. the white house says flynn has no plans to resign. as for president trump's travel ban, aides say all options remain on the table including a supreme court appeal that comes as federal agents conducted a series of raids across at least seven states rounding up hundreds of immigrants in the country illegally. immigration officials insist the raids are routine and no different than the targeted arrests under president obama. anger against president trump spilled out into the streets of mexico city. some 20,000 people demanded respect for their country and its migrants in the united president's plan for a border

this boat fire sent a cloud of black smoke into the air over the weekend and then that kaboom. the boat exploding. it happened at a resort area in honduras. no word on any injuries. the faa is looking into whether snow played a role in a plane sliding off a runway just outside of austin. >> the business jet ended up in a grassy area at the bedford, massachusetts, airport. the five people on board are said to be okay. investigators say the pilot aborted takeoff just moments before this incident. now, the plane was supposed to fly to new jersey. and a few hours later in boston at logan airport, it was evacuated because of high levels of carbon monoxide. now, police think it was caused because of a snow melting machine. they say passengers were removed out of an abundance of caution and were allowed back into the terminal about 30 minutes later. the snowstorm in boston has delayed former new england

patriot aaron hernandez's second murder trial. hernandez is already serving a life sentence in the 2013 killing of a semipro football player. the new trial focuses on the murders of two men after hernandez and the victims left a boston nightclub in 2012. jury selection is set to begin tomorrow. verizon wireless is launching a new unlimited data plan today. it starts at $80 a month for one line. it'll cost you $180 for a four-phone plan. the move comes as verizon feels the pressure from lower priced competitors. this is a warning tale. a man in france is suing uber and claims the ride hailing app led to his former wife, former, finding out about his affair with another woman. >> well, it's uber's fault. so, he says he requested a ride using his ex-wife's phone then logged offhe app which kept nding notifications to her travel history and caused her to get suspicious. they've since divorced, and he's
