their homes. six evacuation centers opened up. one woman made it to an evacuation shelter but was worried about her daughter. >> i have a handicap daughter that can't walk and the ambulance won't come in and take her. they refuse not to come in. she's got to get out. >> this is the first time the emergency spillway has been used after recent rains damaged the main channel. the emergency evacuation orders will stand until officials know the situation is safe. a team from the bay area is headed to help and they're trained to assist in potentially dangerous swift-water rescues. >> amy hollyfield is live for us at menlo park. >> everyone rushes out, and these guys rush in. the swift water rescue team got the call to rush in just as the evacuation orders were made. they took off last night. they'll stage in chico and be

ready to go if needed. >> people may not get out in time. we'll be there to possibly assist in rescues. swift water environment is very dangerous. you know, we're trained to handle that. >> this team has 14 people on it. they will join 12 other units from around the state. they will help people if that spillway gives. people who maybe were not able to get out in time. reporting live in menlo park, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. we want to give you a better look of exactly what is happening here. the far right is the actual dam. when you move to the left and see the original spillway, that's the one that was damaged last week. then there is the emergency spillway in red there. it is quickly eroding. all that water currently flowing down a hill of trees. it would flow toward several communities downstream. that is why the evacuations were necessary. >> look at what a difference just one day makes. on the left, you're looking at

get updates to your device. witnesses are encouraged to come forward after a shooting that killed one person and hurt two others. bullets littered the scene at third and quesada yesterday. a man and woman were rushed to the hospital. another man was already dead. the woman has life threatening injuries. the suspect drove off. they're looking for any surveillance video from nearby businesses. we're learning more about a man killed during what milpitas police believe was a robbery. he was shot inside the garage of an apartment complex. he was a 26-year-old native of india. he was about to finish his masters degree in computer science at a local university. an indian news outlet reports the victim was ready to move home, possibly to start a new job. police arrested a suspect following a short chase near the garage. he was trying to leave the scene in a car he stole from a w

at gunpoint. >> [ bleep ]. oh, my god! >> two fires in oakland forced 17 people out of their homes this weekend. look at this one. this is at 35th and penniman avenue. a neighbor shot this video. as firefighters arrived, they were told people were trapped inside when, in fact, everyone had gotten out. a second fire after 5:00 yesterday burned part of a two-story home on 24th avenue. no one was hurt in that fire either. president trump's advisers say he could issue a new executive order on immigration as soon as today. the president is back at the white house this morning after spending the weekend at his private golf resort in florida. he played host to japanese prime minister shinzo abe. president trump went on twitter to defend a weekend trackdown on undocumented imgramigrants in several cities. officials say there are no threats to national security. >> the people they're targeting are, in fact, dangerous, violent

looking at our traffic maps, i do have a new issue in. it is the semi fully engulfed in flames on westbound 580, just before you get to hopyard r in the dublin-pleasant ton area. this was just made a sig alert. they found a heavy duty tow truck. it is already causing delays. also, if you ride ace rail, not going to happen here the next couple days. no service monday and tuesday because a lot of damage has been done to the tracks that are run by union pacific. they decided not to have any service the next couple days. mike keller has more on that at 5:00. also, state route 37, i'll talk about that in less than ten. >> thank you. sinking streets, washed out roads. there's new storm-related damage popping up in the bay area and it is not even raining. ♪ from the other side adele is the big winner at

your patience. they're helping stranded motorists stuck in major gridlock. look at twitter video we have from folks stuck in the major traffic jam. generally, those roads out of oroville are one or two lanes in the area. even the highways. reggie and ngathat natasha, bac. >> thank you. a move to more easily fund transportation products. a constitutional amendment would lower the requirement to pass transportation bonds from 2/3 to 55%. the money would go to projects like a new tube, caltrans electrification. state leaders say because president trump is threatening to cut funding, it is imperative the state makes it easier to raise money locally. work to repair storm-battered roads will begin in danville. crews will work on these areas on the map.

the eastbound lane of diablo will be closed, and pothole patching will begin on sycamore as well as various neighborhoods. problems continue on roads from sink holes to flooded out roadways. water has nowhere to go. cornell bernard has the story. >> they need to fix the problem. that's the main, main drive. >> reporter: frustration is growing the longer highway 37 stays closed to traffic. water pumps are running 24/7 to remove flooding on highway 37. for now, it is a losing battle. water from several levy breaks is pouring in, almost as fast as the water is being pumped out. more rain is on the way this week. >> we figure, just about the time the water level will get down to where we might consider opening it, then we're going to get another round of rainfall. we're going to be back at square one. >> reporter: caltrans is hoping

to raise the roadway and install to raise the roadway and install better drainage, likely february 24. >> there is a detour at atherton. that backup is usually an hour. >> all this water is making things just crumble down lately. >> reporter: katrina patten couldn't believe her eyes. a sink hole almost swallowed up this bmw in oakland. luckily, the car was towed out just in time. from the street, the hole is about six feet wide but dangerously deep. >> the man told me it is 30 feet down. it is crazy. just shocking. >> reporter: here's a look inside the deep sink hole, where water is gushing out from a broken pipe underneath. winter storms are to blame for the scrcrumbling pavement. >> once it dries, we'll be fixing the streets. this would be a major repair. >> reporter: east 27th is closed to traffic indefinitely.

cornell bernard. abc 7 news. a round of icy, snowy weather headed to the northeast as 50 million people are recovering from the last storm that came to the region. city workers are facing snow fatigue. there hasn't been enough time for snow to melt and efficiently clean up. as much as two feet of snow is expected to fall in the new storm. >> let's talk about rain fatigue, mike nicco. it is not done with us yet. >> my sentiments exactly. when we had ten days in a row of wet weather. we had a couple of dry ones and will have a couple more. the fog is becoming an issue but only in petaluma. the northeast corner is where the reporting station is. could be 101, western avenue, all the areas could have really thick fog and dangerously low visibility. what's that ev evaporati evaporation. we'll be in the upper 50s, half moon bay, san francisco.

60 to 65 for most of us. fairfield and santa rosa, 67. fog in general going to be an issue again tonight. temperatures about the same as this morning, low to upper 40s. let's look at the next storm just to get you ready. almost hesitate to mention it because of rain fatigue. but it is thursday. it is light to moderate rain. winds will be light, not damaging. the issue is runoff. we're not going to get less saturated between now and then. by the time we get to about midnight, it starts to move into the north bay. it'll spread across all our neighborhoods as we head through thursday's morning commute. that is going to be the toughest commute, at least weatherwise, all week. we have scattered showers friday. light showers saturday and sunday. >> we have a sig alert. >> we have a sig alert. if

dubl dublin/pleasanton area, we have the semi fully engulfed. crews are on the scene and blocking two lanes. we're up to a two mile blockup and down to 21 miles per hour as you approach that. slowing down. hopefully they're able to get that towed out of the way before too long. state route 37 still closed both directions between 101 and atherton. crews made quite a bit of progress last night, but it will be closed both directions for the morning commute. they need daylight to assess. traffic control will be provided again today. 101 and 880 looking okay so far in the south bay. next traffic update just before 5:00. beyonce and chance the rapper, big winners at the grammys. they won two awards. but the queen of the night was adele. >> when you think about it, this is really amazing. >> yeah. >> she is the first artist ever to gettal p album of the year, d of the year and song of the year. not just one grammys but at two. abc news has the highlights.

back at 4:54. flash flooding caused a big problem in southern california. look at this. the rushing water, so powerful, it swept away cars in newhall, about 30 miles north of los angeles. just last month, three back to back storms moved through the same area, dumping 3 to 8 inches of rain in six days. can you imagine if that was your car? >> i hope that person is okay. look at this situation. people scrambling to get on top of their cars to avoid getting swept away in the flash flooding. firefighters were called in to rescue three people in l.a. county this weekend. no one there was hurt. heads up if you have any cheese right now in the fridge. some popular products are being recalled due to listeria contamination, the possibility.

developing. public transit, you can see it is going to be good. dry all day. caution if you're commuting, especially in the north bay. foggy spots. hazy sunshine if you're out and about. let me talk about my storm conce concerns. hydroplaning will be a tremendous concern. it'll hit during the morning rush. urban and creek flooding, a moderate concern. whatever hits the ground is going to runoff. it depends how much will fall. we'll keep an eye on that. here's alexis with an update. not a great start in the tri-valley. westbound 580, just before hopyard, that's where the semi is fully engulfed. emergency kree crews are on th scene. the two right lanes are blocked. you're at a two mile backup at this point. the bay bridge commute looking great. here's a live look at folks heading into san francisco. a little fog in a few areas but we are okay for the bay bridge commute. no metering lights. that happens around 5:30. we have a problem in the fremont areas.
