and that breaking news is from the white house tonight, a major shakeup from the trump administration, national security adviser michael flynn is out. i'm dan ashley. and i'm ama dietz. >> flynn stepped out amid a controversy regarding the russians. >> yeah, he admitted to a conversation with the ambassador before the sanctions were actually made. he apologized to the president this morning. the washington post reported today that the president warned flynn about the conversation, adding that he is susceptible to blackmail by the russians. further investigations were called for tonight. >> yeah, there were a lot more questions that we need to get to the bottom of. primarily, what are the personal and political financial ties that donald trump and his team have with the russian government. >> flynn issued a statement saying unfortunately because of the fast-paced events i

inadvertently briefed the president and others regarding my phone call with the russian ambassador falsely. he has worked for defense companies including oracle, kellogg earned his bachelor's degree from california. and tonight, the reservoir level has dropped about eight feet, the goal is 50 feet. emergency officials are not taking any chances. >> yes, the communities evacuated in the flood zone should the dam's emergency spillway fail. many don't know if they can return home, grabbing what they can and got out. >> we well learn when the rain will return, but first, let's talk to laura anthony at the oroville dam. >> reporter: hi, ama, basically a sense of urgency here at the damp, the front loaders and dump

trucks all carrying materials. the top state officials are giving no time frame for lifting the evacuaion order. one after another an endless procession of dump trucks carrying huge boulders from the staging area to the damaged emergency spillway of the oroville dam, an effort that governor jerry brown says he is watching closely. >> so far it's holding, that is why the evacuation is still in place because there is uncertainty. >> reporter: earlier, the helicopters dropped smaller rocks to help to close the gaps in the smaller areas to help repair. in the meantime, downtown oroville is mostly evacuated. the lights are on but all but a few businesses are closed. local police are among a few vehicles on the road checking to make sure that looters do not move in while thousands of residents are moved away. many evacuees from various towns are heading from places like

chico, anywhere that is out of the way of the potential disaster. >> my daughter wanted to give me a place to stay, maybe three or four days to work it out. >> reporter: all of them aware that there is another round of rain heading their way. >> i would not say that everything is going to be fine, because we know a storm is coming. we don't know how big it will be. >> i don't think we're out of the woods yet, the weather we have had is just phenomenal. thankfully, we don't have the reservoirs that we had then. >> reporter: the repairs are well under way, the lake level is dropping and officials said they do have a repopulation plan in place, but with no time frame for implementing it perhaps out of a healthy dose of respect for that weather we're expecting later this week. at the dam in oroville, laura anthony, abc 7 news. okay, thank you laura, now, many evacuees are staying in

emergency shelters, churches or friends' houses out of the danger zone. abc 7 news was in fairfield where a large family booked a hotel. >> grandmother lives across the street, we ran across the street, told her and all of my cousins over there. yeah, it was pretty hectic for a little bit just because you don't know what is going on. >> the evacuees were offered a free movie in chico tonight, which was certainly a welcome beak. and more rain on the way to the oroville dam. >> reporter: dan and ama, it's a series of storms hitting the oroville dam area, right now a flash flood warning is in effect for that region until 4:15 p.m. tomorrow. that will likely get extended. you will see in a moment here live doppler 7 tracking the rain as early as thursday morning.

there are three storms expected for the area, thursday morning some downpours, friday afternoon we'll see rain and then sunday another round of storms coming through. so this will just make matters worse if they cannot fix the problem then. right now, the inches are in the bay area, and the second one, i'll let you know when they arrive, hour by hour look coming right up. all right, thank you, sandh sandhya. all right, move to the left and you see the original spillway damaged last week and here is the emergency spillway r eroding that could spill into the sites down stream. and tonight, abc news

reporter wayne freedman looked into the safety of a much older dam than many in the bay area pass by every day. >> reporter: this is an area that many wished they could have appreciated tonight. but it happened a while away, at crystal springs reservoir where an oroville crisis would likely not happen, because old concrete is now new. he operates the utilities commission which operates to help supply local drinking water. in 2003, they embarked on a $4 billion system-wide upgrade, this is just one of many. >> we've upgraded the system so it can withstand what we think is out there. >> reporter: the crystal springs reservoir is a wonder of the world, when it opened in 1988, t the largest concrete dam built back there, but a study show it

would be insufficient. and the dam was raised by nine feet, and more than doubled the size of its spillway. the dam can now drain. >> we can let water out more efficiently and faster. we can let the water out if it comes in, to the maximum event. >> could you do that before now? >> no. >> reporter: and now, they maintain a margin for safety, imagine that a dam 80 years older than oroville, and apparently safer. in san mateo county, wayne freedman. that is fascinating, we'll continue to watch and give you updates, if you download the app and enable the push alerts you will get updates immediately. and mudslides reducing traffic on highway 17 to just one lane in each direction, and now this, a new sinkhole closing

the alternative to the route, so they are closed a mile west of olson road. katie marzullo. >> reporter: so much frustration here, drivers in the mountains seeing road closures just every minute it seems like. you know some we saw tonight making the dangerous decision to ignore those road closures. >> it's sinking, and it's not a good situation for us right now. >> reporter: this is a new sinkhole caused by a historic landslide, the road is closed but the signs are not enough to stop some drivers. the road is a primary alternative to highway 17. >> it's a major crisis to have those roads closed, along with two lanes down to bear creek so we are definitely suffering this year. >> reporter: greg scobee took these photos, public works has

examined the area, and it will not be a quick fix. highway 17 is at the heart of the problem, with a mudslide closing the road. repairs are under way following the death of a worker last week. elsewhere, highway 35 is closed because of a massive washout, drivers using black route to get around it. people who live there say the road cannot handle it. >> you combine that extra traffic with the road bed where there are some major cracks and we're very concerned. >> reporter: authorities don't know when any of these three roads will open again. in southern california, katie marzullo. all right, stay with us, sick animals are showing up, and the new dog danger and how the recent rain is to blame for it. also. there was a female screaming for help. >> road rage ends in gunfire at this bay area intersection, the wife who was forced to rush her

new at 11:00, an alarming number of san francisco dogs are getting sick and at least in one case one died. yes, the record rain here in the bay area is the reason. >> reporter: this is gertie before she passed away. the 13-year-old cattle dog died of a bacteria disease. >> it came on pretty hard and fast, which is the scary part. before you even know they have it it's too late to do anything about it. >> reporter: veterinarians in san francisco are treating more dogs infected with the bacteria than ever before. at the san francisco veterinarian specialists, there are five documented cases of leptosporosis, symptoms clouding diarrhea and vomiting, usually

spread through the urine of infected wild animals. all of these reasons are likely to blame, the bacteria can live in standing water for weeks if not months, dogs in san francisco are now being advised to consider the vaccine. but there is a catch. >> there are multiple strains of leptosporosis, so this vaccine doesn't cover all of them but it's the best preventible measure. >> she wishes she had know about the vaccine, and wishes to educate others. >> if i have save one pup going through this fate, or the heartbreak, i have done my job. >> in san francisco, abc 7 news. a case of road rage in san leandro escalated into the facilitate shofat shooting of a man right in front

of his family. the wife said her husband got into an argument with a man while they were moving. >> the woman identified as his wife slid over against the driver of the victim himself and actually operated the victim. >> she drove to kaiser and screamed for help but the man died. two young children in the car were not hurt, police have not made arrests. and palo alto police arrested a man accused of attacking people at an auto shop because he didn't get the part he wanted. police say he hit a customer with the carburetor cover, when he was arrested at his home he put up a fight kicking an officer. and a fire destroyed nine vehicles in a parking garage starting at the mickey and friends parking structure, doing about $180,000 in damage, several people were treated for smoke inhalation. you can see part of it coming
