take a look at this amazing video from northwest peru. that's bus with 16 people inside being swept away by flooding near a river that was overflowing. a police officer inside the van actually used his gun to smash the windows, and everyone got out. no serious injuries reported. flooding throughout the country has left 25 dead and affected more than 300,000 people since christmas. so the people in that van very lucky to make it out alive. >> yes, they are, absolutely. >> back here in this country and the nationwide sweepup of undocumented workers. the white house says it's part of keeping a campaign promise. >> the arrests sparking fear in immigrant communities. but immigration officials call the arrests routine. here's mary bruce in washington. >> reporter: this scene in the middle of the night in los angeles. federal agents waiting in this parking lot.

misconduct and child pornography. and uconn is the first women's basketball team to hit triple digits. it is tuesday, february 14th. from abc news, this is "world news now." good morning to you all. we'll start this half hour with the breaking news of the resignation of one of president trump's top advisors. >> national security advisor michael flynn has stepped down after facing increasing scrutiny over his misleading vice president mike pence and other top officials about his discussions with a russian diplomat before the president's inauguration. >> this morning, we are already hearing about a possible short list for his replacement. abc's lana zak has the latest from washington. >> reporter: general michael flynn was one of the first appointments president trump made following his election but now the first to leave the administration. at issue, whether flynn lied to the vice president about discussing u.s. sanctions with russian officials before he even assumed office.

he said he didn't and vice president pence repeated those claims. >> what i can confirm having spoken to him about it is that those conversations that happened to occur around the time that the united states took action to expel diplomats had nothing whatsoever to dodo with those sanctions. >> reporter: multiple sources tell abc news that the topic of sanctions did come up and the fbi sent a warning to the white house concerned that a high level official caught in a public lie could be subject to blackmail. flynn was a member of the trump team and kellyanne conway on monday afternoon maintained that he had the support of the white house. >> general flynn does enjoy the full confidence of the president. >> by monday night, flynn was out. joseph keith kellogg had been appointed acting chief security advisor. in his letter of resignation,

house, ivanka trump was here. take a look at the photo she tweeted from inside the oval office. she said a great discussion with two world leaders about the importance of women having a seat at the table. she was here for a meeting with women business leaders and she was seated right next to the prime minister and right across from her father. cecilia vega, abc news, the white house. >> it really is just too bad that justin trudeau is not better looking. it's a travesty. it's sad. >> could we run that package again? moving on to actually serious news. a crisis in california. nearly 200,000 residents still out of their homes near the oroville dam and no word when they meet be able to return. >> efforts are under way to shore up the emergency spillway and prevent the dam from releasing a wall of water. it's something of a race against time because more rain is on the way for that area. we'll get more now from abc's danya bacchus. >> reporter: the oroville dam now at record levels. it's emergency spillway in danger of failing and unleashing uncontrolled floodwaters on towns below.

>> be advise dollars, we need to expand the evacuation area. >> almost 200,000 people told to leave home. dishes left on the table at this abandoned denny's restaurant. >> our phone started going off and we loaded up the kids and took off. the dam is america's tallest. it releases water from lake oroville through a spillway. the problem starting last tuesday when a massive hole developed in the concrete base forcing engineers saturday to allow water over this wall into the adjacent emergency spillway. monday, they used helicopters to lift giant bags of rocks to drop into the massive erosion area. they've also increased the water flow at the main spillway with that hole to take the pressure off the emergency one. in the meantime, many people prepared to spend another night away from home. >> we're doing everything we can to get this dam in shape that they can return and they can live safely without fear. >> reporter: officials say more than one olympic swimming pool worth of water is rushing through that spillway every second.

they're also keeping a close eye on the weather with more rain expected this water. in oroville, california, danya bacchus, abc news. >> our thanks to danya. on the other side of the country, in the northeast, more snow expected this week, as well even before the last snowfall was cleaned up. the latest storm dumped as much as 30 inches on some parts of maine and new hampshire and further south, there were high winds knocking over trees and power lines and damaging buildings. coast guard crews found a debris field after a small plane went missing in the gulf of mexico over the weekend. three people are believed to have been in the piper cherokee. it went down shortly after takeoff out of north tampa on sunday. crews found a seat matching the interior of the plane. the plane last appeared on radar south of cedar key. native american tribes fighting the dakota access pipeline are preparing to go back to court after losing their bid for a temporary restraining

northern california. a major dam that could let loose a flood of epic proportions on to nearby towns with new storms on the way, helicopters are dropping sacks of rocks into a hole in the dam's emergency spillway. the choppers are also moving rocks to patch other spots and reinforce that spillway. >> the evacuation orders keeping nearly 200,000 people out of their homes and it remains in place, that order. california's governor is seeking federal disaster assistance. abc's kayna whitworth has more on the nightmare at the oroville dam. that started the alarm. water rushing over a giant, gaping hole. now the race to reroute the water causing bigger problems. the damage and erosion so severe emergency officials fear the worst. if the area doesn't hold, a giant wall of water could spill into the surrounding residential areas. just seven miles downstream from the dam, the city of oroville,

this is the feather river already swelling over its banks. if that spillway fails, a million more gallons of water every second would enter this river. nearly 200,000 people told to evacuate. the alerts coming in by phone and text. this oroville resident said he had five minutes to leave. >> her phone started going off, and we just immediately loaded up the kids and took off. >> yeah. >> reporter: dishes left on the table at this abandoned denny's. those fleeing stuck in bumper to bumper traffic for hours. gas stations overwhelmed. >> i'm scared because i have never been in anything like this before. >> reporter: motorists tweeting photos and videos of their ordeal through the night. >> i have been stuck in this spot for 20 minutes now. i ain't going nowhere. >> reporter: the problem all stemming from the oroville dam in northern california, now at record levels and in danger of spilling over after a series of storms. at 770 feet high, the dam is america's tallest. it releases water from lake oroville through a spillway. the problem started last tuesday

when a massive hole developed in the spillway's concrete base, forcing engineers saturday to allow water over this wall into the adjacent emergency spillway. here are those dramatic images of the water going over the wall for the first time since the dam opened in 1968, leading to that severe and dangerous erosion. right behind me, these are the giant bags they are filling up with rocks to drop into the hole, and when you look those bags are about four feet tall. lifting giant bags that they hope will stop the erosion. with that giant hole to take the pressure off the second emergency spillway. more than one olympic swimming pool of water rushing through every single second, and officials say, it's working, but this image shows how close the dam is to the town of oroville, which is a ghost town. many preparing to spend a second night at shelters, sleeping on cots and among those waiting to return home, 18-year-old april torlone.
