[ inaudible ]. >> i can share with you, henry, our investigators are looking into have we been to this street before, how many times have we been to this street, what residents have we visited at this street. the indiviual -- any calls connected to this individual, any residents on the street and what those calls were. so that's going to be part of our investigation, and the answers we will be looking for today. right now i do want to share with our community that we are

going to have the area around 9 8th avenue, las vegas, that area will be closed down for quite sometime. again, we continue our investigation. >> [ inaudible ]. >> laura, i can tell you, we were out here, we were on the perimeter trying to keep some of our citizens from driving through the area, and we heard multiple, multiple rounds, multiple gunshot rounds fired from the suspect. that was what was making it so challenging for us to communicate, not only to media to our community. again, that's why i want to thank the chp for assisting us. we were able to via telephone communicate with chp to push the message out, not only to media to help us get that messaging out, but also i would like to thank the radio station who put it out over the -- over the airwaves for anyone who is

traveling in the immediate area, 580, 98th avenue, golf links, to please use alternate routes. we had our hands full. this was a very dangerous situation, not only for our residents who live on that street but also for our officers who responded, and this individual was shooting at them. so i want to thank chp and i want to thank the media, channel 7. they provided us with some photos of the suspect, and that was -- we immediately forwarded those to our responding officers. some of those officers are from our swat team, our entry team, that were able to respond with our armored vehicle. again, this is equipment that we use in very dynamic situations to help keep our officers safe, so we can, one, locate the suspect who is armed with a firearm and then also contain that suspect. >> [ inaudible ]. >> i'm sorry.

go ahead. >> [ inaudible ]. what can you tell us about what he was spray painting, any idea what it was about? >> that will be part of our investigation. i don't have that information, doug. i can share with you we will certainly look into it and we will provide that information, those updates when we can. right now i want to reiterate that the suspect is in custody. he is currently at a local hospital being medically treated. we can confirm, we had an opd officer discharge his firearm. we cannot confirm that the suspect was struck by the opd officer discharging his firearm. what we can share with you is that this area of las vegas avenue and 98th avenue will be impacted for quite sometime traffic wise due to the ongoing investigation. >> [ inaudible ]. >> no, we have conducted a search and we are not looking for anyone else. the individual ha ha that we be is responsible for the earlier incident is in custody and we are not looking for additional

suspects. >> did he say anything -- this is a live news conference held by johnna watson, oakland police department spokeswoman. she is continuing to answer questions. i want to point out she said that oakland police officer fired and the suspect fired as well, multiple times is what she told our reporter, laura anthony. also she indicated this point, very important for those of you in the area, 98th avenue and las vegas will continue to remain closed for a while for investigation of what happened earlier. thanks for joining us here on "abc 7 news." i'm kristen sze. give you a little more background information now. just moments ago that suspect we were talking about arrived at highland hospital in oakland. our "abc 7 news" crews did capture this video of the man being wheeled in on a stretcher. it looks like he may have had an injury on the arm. at this point though it is unclear whether he was shot by officers, as you heard johnna

watson refer they don't know who shot whom at this point, but he is injured and getting treatment at the hospital. oakland police announce he was disarmed and detained at the scene. take a look near interstate 580. sky 7 captures this video as he was wheeled away and put into an ambulance. before that we saw him lying on the ground with his rifle just a few feet away. now, we want to show you exactly where this scene is. 9th and las vegas avenue in oakland in the hills, and you can see it is right near bishop o'dell high school. they were locked down there for a while. the lock down has been lifted. you heard ms. watson say they're not looking for suspects. the scene is secure. this began as a call for officer down. sky seven was over interstate 580 and golf links roo where you see an oakland police car with bullet holes in the windshield. right now it is unclear whether an officer was actually hurt or who fired the shot that pierced the windshield.

look, before the suspect was detained we saw him spray pinting graffiti, obscene graffiti in his neighborhood. sky 7 was overhead as he tagged a nearby home and a car parked on the street. "abc 7 news" reporter amy hollyfield is live in the neighborhood where there's still a huge police presence. amy, that will be the case for a while longer. >> reporter: hi, kristen. yeah, they're going to have 98th avenue shut down for a while. going up the hill, you can come down the hill but you can't go up. you can't go northbound. what an impact on this neighborhood. all you have to do is look at this video to feel the impact. look at the small school children. they are walking back to their school, walking up 98th avenue. they had been evacuated from franco phone charter school while it was going on. the man with the gun was close to their school so they sought shelter a few blocks away. they're all okay, now safely back in class. bishop oh' dowd high school was

on lockdown. a few of the residents were telling us they felt nervous. we talked to a few as they stepped outside to see what was going on. >> it is just crazy. you know, you got kids out there at the school up there, you got the zoo. i mean come on now. but that's how it is. >> it is really hitting home. it is too close, and then you got kids and schools like -- ain't nothing safe no more. what can the kids actually do? you can't walk to the park, they can't go to parks, now they can't even go to school? >> reporter: oakland police had this neighborhood surrounded and they were strict about where people could go. they were keeping this a very wide perimeter around the situation. it was a nervous mood here, that's how i would describe it. we met a father who was tr frantically pacing this street. we are at thermal and 98th looking for his kid. he received a text saying his child as evacuated from the school and he was trying to find him. all of the safeguards have been lifted.

anyone was inside when it went into the water. last month a taxi cab driver plunged into the water not far away in the oakland estuary. witnesses saw the cab disappear in the water. divers eventually located the car and pulled the driver out. he died a short time later at a nearby hospital. storms are once again moving through the bay area right now kicking off a weekend of rain. the rain and wind really swirling right now on mount tam. a live look shows rain drops hitting the lens of our camera and dark, stormy skies. rain is also coming down in san rafael right now. this is a live picture there. 101 drivers there taking it slow after a rough morning commute there. and a live picture of santa cruz. storms are rolling into the south bay as well. you can see the waves are really picking up there. meteorologist mike "newsweek" owe is tracking the conditions and has our first look at live doppler 7. >> it looked angry there, didn't it, the ocean? when i show the bay, it will look almost as angry.

storm impact scale a two on the storm. periods of moderate to heavy rain. it is the gusty winds that have been kicking up the last couple of hours that downed trees and causing some roadways to be closed according to alexis, who is sitting next to me telling me 880 has been closed down in the south bay because of it. so here is what we're seeing. gusts anywhere from 39 to 49 miles per hour. we had gusts as high as 54 earlier in san jose and that's probably when the tree came down. this will continue in the areas shaded in yellow until 6:00 today, and even faster ones around the bay shore and on our east/west bridges because there's nothing to slow the wind down. the surface is so smooth there. moderate to heavy rain moving from san ramon right across the richmond/san rafael bridge up to fairfield right now. this will continue, but the winds concern me the most. as you look from the explore tore yum camera, white caps on the bay. the wind the biggest issue with

this storm. >> the south bay was hit by wind during the storm. let's get to "abc 7 news" reporter matt keller live in morgan hill. matt. >> reporter: kristen, really crazy out here in morgan hill, especially for the last hour and a half, two hours. check this out. this giant branch sitting here in the tree. then i want to show you something here. check out these power poles. apparenly a tree or something happened where it went into the line and knocked these power poles over, causing a huge mass of power outages in the whole neighborhood. started a fire in a house as well. pg&e is here on the scene taking care of power issues, but, yes, this is not the only damage here in morgan hill. the wind had its way with this tree that crashed into the middle of cochran road. crews were busy trying to clear it away so commuters could get to highway 101. less than a mile away these two giant trees were pushed over in their giant planters on cochran road as well. then over on east main avenue, this tree crashed into the middle of the road. so windy and so dangerous. >> leaning. >> reporter: then several power

poles pushed over, a live wire hitting a house and starting a fire near britton middle school. everyone was okay but both wires and nerves frayed. this is britton middle school right here. they have evacuated all of the students out of their classrooms into the gym. they're okay. i talked with an administrator here. they said they're not cancelling classes today. they're going to stay there. they're going to have snacks and they're going to be in the class many roo. why would anyone want to come out right now, especially with the windy conditions and the rain? also here around this area where the power poles have fallen down, they do have it blocked off. a lot of big, big police presence here so it is tough driving around in this neighborhood as well. that's another reason the kids can will be staying here. it is really tough to get into this neighborhood. reportic live in morgan hill, matt keller, "abc 7 news." thank you. today's storm is causing problems for police. san benito high school has

wires are down as well. so 880 full railway closed at bascomb avenue. it looks like a tree took out power lines, crews are on the scene working on that. northbound diverted. we have another tree down further north around 880 and 1st avenue. southbound will be forced off at alameda. yes, we have some very strong wind gusts, a lot of trees down in the area. kristen, back to you. >> alexis, thanks so much. developing news in solano county. officials are trying to calm fears about a tuberculosis case. the high school sent this letter to let them know about students possible exposure to the infectious bacteria. officials have not said who tested positive for tb. they won't say if it is a student or faculty member. they say more than 200 people

forecast with mike nicco. >> let's open up the weather window on our roof camera. i want to show you how gusty the winds are here in san francisco. look at the trees swaying back and forth. look at the drops hitting the lens because the rain is coming down side ways. an umbrella probably not going to be enough to keep you dry today. downpours and windy the next several hours, thns then transitioning to showers and breezy conditions for the evening and overnight hours. scattered showers and continued breezes this weekend. heaviest rain sunday night into monday morning. here is a look at one of the better downpours on lucas valley. you can see in san rafael heading to necessary valued owe. we have one updated there, from danville, alamo, up to rossmore, this will head up to walnut creek, up 60, 242 and possibly to pachego and baypointe. here is a look at what is going

on. notice the rain not looking as impressive as it was. that's going to be the trend as we head into the next couple of hours. it is going to be the winds the next couple of hours that are the big stories. this area of low pressure is quickly developing, they call it -- when the low develops genesis or a bomb, bomb-bo genesis. that's what it is calling, it is developing so rapidly, the air is rising so quickly in it. a term if you wanted to know. here is a look at what is going on as far as rain. you can see from noon until 2:00 we have moderate waves of showers that will create more ponding on the roadways morks side ways rain. it could be a little hard to see at times, especially on some of the east/west bridges. by 5:00 down to scattered showers. during the evening hours you can see scattered showers, a brief downpour still possible. as we head through the overnight hours we will have another push as that low moves over top of us, of scattered, light to possibly some moderate showers. then by about noon tomorrow those will start to dry up, a little dryer breeze will move in

on the backside of that low. rainfall amounts again not very impressive. look at that. from a third to half an inch and most of the neighborhoods to an inch possible in the north bay. my biggest concerns with this will be the trees down. yeah, power outages, irvin creek flooding, hydro plaining, all of that on the mad rat scale. heading to tahoe, you can see it is snowing and coming down side ways there. then you get a little bit of a break saturday and sunday and get the sierra, some heavy, wet snow mixed with rain for president's day. we will be having another number two -- excuse me, a moderate storm for monday and two lighte storms for tuesday and wednesday, and then it is finally over, the storm door closes thursday. >> wow. i know next week is ski week for schools and families, but getting up there looks to be challenging. >> if they can wait until tuesday, that will be best. >> thanks, mike. we have made it to friday. you know what it means. mike will be back with perfect
