oakland. good evening, i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashley. it was really hard and incredibly intense to watch. a man with a high-powered rifle in a bay area city firing shots. >> this happened on las vegas avenue in oakland not far from bishop o'dowd high school and the 580 freeway. >> laura anthony is live with the latest. >> reporter: hi, dan. last word the suspect is in serious condition suffering at least one gunshot wound. a round fired by police. no one else was hurt in this incident. in the meantime this remains an active crime scene and active investigation still going on here at 98th and las vegas avenue which remains closed at this hour. the officer, the suv that was shot at by the suspect is still here at the scene. the one that the shooter fired at almost as soon as police arrived. >> shots fired, shots fired. >> reporter: it was like a scene from a movie. a man from a blue shirt hanging

out of an open window firing a long rifle. first at his neighbors' homes and cars, and then at police. even at the helicopters hovering overhead. >> it was reported that shots were fired at residents and at some of the cars that were parked on the street. we had multiple officers arrive on scene. officers reported that this individual was shooting at them. rounds were striking the ground near where the officers were. >> reporter: from sky 7 you can see an oakland police suv with bullet holes in the windshield, so no officer was hit. at one point the suspect, identified as 32-year-old jesse enjand was spraying painting a woman's home. >> i heard like several rounds together, about five. and so that told me okay, it's definitely some sort of gun so i ran back in the home. then i looked out my upper window from the second level of my home to get a better view.

as i pulled the shade back, i heard more rounds and so i thought, well, maybe someone is shooting at me. >> reporter: finally the suspect goes down, hit by at least one police bullet. after officers secured his weapon, he is wheeled away and taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. >> that's what our investigators will be looking into, what led up to this individual to go out and start shooting with a rifle. not only in the neighborhood, but then also at police when they arrived. >> reporter: in oakland, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> the man grew up in fremont and attended american high school. >> he's well educated. he ernds earned his undergrad degree at ucla. >> later he earned a law degree from the university of michigan where he was accused of stalking another student. the i-team has been looking into his background all day and will have more tonight at 6:00. as you can imagine, this

incident caused some tense moments for students, faculty and parents at bishop o'dowd high school and a charter school that were locked down. >> melanie woodrow is live outside the school with reaction. melanie? >> reporter: kristen and dan, you can imagine how scary this was, especially for the younger kids and their parents here at the charter school. administrators at both schools say they were in constant contact with police. students and faculty at bishop o'dowd high school and the charter school of oakland found themselves in the middle of a standoff between oakland police and a man armed with a rifle and scope. >> you know, it was a nerve-racking situation. >> yeah, i had a split second there where i thought i hope, i just hope nothing happens here. >> i mean it's really frightening. >> reporter: marilyn was at the charter school with her 5 and 7-year-old's daughters when the school's director got a call from police saying first to lock down and five minutes later to evacuate the school. >> are we hearing you correctly,

you really wanting us to leave? they said yes, and they even told us what directon to go. >> reporter: as these small students headed south, police gave bishop o'dowd high school administrators similar directions and we said, look, we want you to check that information because we've got, you know, 1300 people on campus. >> reporter: the school's principal says police then told administrators to keep students in the building. >> it was pretty quiet. it was really dark and cold. >> she had been communicating with me that the police were on campus so i felt very much that o'dowd was doing a good job. >> reporter: students sent texts to their parents that said we're all just sitting here on the floor and no one is really worried. >> she sent me a snapchat that said, you know, lockdown, say a prayer. >> reporter: tense moments. >> i'm just glad, of course, my kids and i, we're all okay. >> reporter: that ended with the lockdowns lifted and no one injured at either school. melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. the chp posted these pictures of eastbound 580 and

the ramps to 98th avenue and golf links road closed during the tense moments this morning. we sent out several push alerts on the story throughout the day. you can stay on top of breaking news on the abc 7 news app. just download it for free to get updates on your mobile device. right before that shooting broke out, police were at the other end of oakland. for the second time in six weeks a car plunged into the water near the oakland airport. drivers demand the city put in safety barriers. >> reporter: this is the car that plunged into san leandro bay early friday morning. the crumbled sedan pulled from the water. the driver died. dive teams in the water, the car on its side. >> it's a big problem. >> reporter: even long-time taxi drivers who regularly travel along dolittle drive near the oakland airport say it's dangerous, especially at night and in the rain. it can be hard to see where the

road ends and where the water begins. >> this is not the first time i witnessed -- >> very dangerous. every day the people have accident. >> reporter: this comes just six weeks after a similar accident. a taxi driver died after crashing into the oakland estuary during a storm. fareed holds up a picture of his friend. >> we pray for him. he was very nice guy. >> reporter: he says many cabbies started taking a different route after he died. drivers i talked to say it's time for the city to step in. they'd like to see a barrier or wall, something to prevent out of control cars from going into the water. >> i expect the city to put a wall on it or put a rail on it so that people stay safe. >> they could put a wall over there by the water, at least save a life. >> reporter: police and sheriff deputies urge drivers to slow down, especially in bad weather. in oakland, alyssa harrington,

abc 7 news. well, rain may have played a role in that accident and more is coming. let's check in now with abc 7 news meteorologist sandhya patel for the timeline. >> let's take a look at live doppler 7 first and talk about what's ahead for your weekend. so we are tracking still some downpours from san francisco as we take you into street level radar. mission street, along the bayshore, brisbane, as we head down the peninsula look at this. burlingame, san mateo, foster city, you're just getting pounded here. we head further south, san jose street level radar, some moderate rain. in the east bay it is coming down from alameda to oakland. inland areas also seeing some rain right around livermore, 580, so it's really not an easy breezy commute. the winds have eased up in most areas. wind advisory for most of the bay area dropped but gusting to 33 at fairfield which is why solano county remains under a wind advisory until 10:00 tonight. gusts to 55 miles an hour could

still take down trees and power lines. the next few hours we continue with this level 2 moderate strength storm. brief downpours, breezy to gusty conditions still going to continue. look at the storm reports, a majority of them in the south bay and down towards the we've had dozens of reports of wind damage and heavy rain and this is really still not done with us yet. we have two more storms coming, one of them comes in over the weekend and another one next week. hour-by-hour forecast is coming up. dan. >> sandhya, thanks a lot. right now tens of thousands of people are without power in monterey county because of storm-related issues. here in the bay area the biggest outage is in san jose with more than 8500 pg&e customers without power. that's down from more than 16,000 earlier. more than 4200 are in the dark in santa cruz, 1100 are without power in napa and in mountain view, crews are working to restore power to 973 customers. and in napa, strong winds forced huge trees to sway. look at that, on 1st street and

willow, a cedar tree came down and destroyed a garage. three neighboring homes were evacuated because of another tree in danger of falling. a couple of blocks away on east avenue, another tree split a garage in half and crushed two cars. no one was hurt. strange sight on top of lone mountain on the university of san francisco campus. two trees over 100 feet high fell in opposite directions. the trees had their roots tangled together, kind of a twisted mess. so when one fell, it yanked the second one off the ground. john in fremont send us his pictures of a downed tree using #abc7now. any time you see news, share pictures with the hash tag and you may see your pictures on error online at abc7news.com. parents are angry about a common medication. >> it was horrifying to see my daughter change like that. >> a manufacturer suggests one thing, doctors apparently another. tonight an in-depth look at

could a common over-the-counter medication be putting kids at risk? that's what a study under way at one children's hospital is trying to figure out. several families in philadelphia say their children developed psychiatric problems after taking miralax. here's investigative reporter wendy sultzman from our sister station. >> we saw a lot of anger, a lot of rage, a lot of aggression. >> near psychiatric events with paranoia, mood swings, aggression, rage. >> reporter: these families all have similar stories. >> i feel like my son was absolutely robbed of most of his childhood. >> reporter: they say a doctor recommended a seemingly harmless

over-the-counter lacxative but they say it was like a switch that was flipped and their once happy and laughing children durnd angry and dark. >> they had rage, fears, phobias, anxiety. >> reporter: jeannie's daughter nicole was placed on miralax when she was 3 1/2 years old. within three days nicole turned manic, aggressive and paranoid. >> it was horrifying to see my daugter change like that and not completely go back to normal. >> reporter: nicole is now 19 and lives in north wales p.a. >> i was a very, very happy child. when i was 2, i was running around playing. in second grade i started hating everybody. i wanted to kill everybody. i'm mad that this happened to me. >> reporter: even though the label doesn't recommend miralax for children under 17 and limits the use to seven days, these parents say pediatricians prescribe it like water and for extended periods of time. >> she was on it for about eight months. >> reporter: natalie from

west chester read that label but like other parents she trusted her doctor when she recommended miralax. >> all of a sudden she started having these weird tics. >> reporter: these families complained to the fda and are part of a facebook group with more than 3,000 members where other families have voesed similar concerns. jeannie helped author a petition asking for a warning label and investigation into miralax. it resulted in a $325,000 study of polyethylene glycol 3350 in the pediatric population. >> i think they're poisoning our children. >> reporter: the study was awarded after the fda reported 167 adverse side effects in kids. 37 of those included neurological or psychiatric responses. they also noted small amounts of ethylene glycol in tests they ran, the same ingredients found in antifreeze. the fda says they take the health and welfare of pediatric

populations very seriously and believe the label accurately conveys the risks. they have determined there is insufficient data to demonstrate a link between peg 3350 and serious neuropsychiatric issues in children. after repeated attempts to speak with doctors, the hospital says they can't comment because the study is incomplete. >> i trust in the medical community. they robbed me of part of my fatherhood. >> in the meantime these parents are worried more children may be at risk. they're pleading with doctors and parents alike to stop using this powerful laxative in the bodies of small kids. >> it breaks my heart because i know how i felt. i don't want anyone else to feel that way. >> now, the fda says samples of miralax it tested shows traces of a material the families are concerned about were produced in 2008 and the amounts it found were so low that they were within safety standards and didn't show up in later testing.

bayer, the manufacturer of miralax, told her that studies found it to be safe for both short and long-term use in children but their label recommends it only for people over the age of 17. the complete responses from bayer, chop and the fda are online at abc7news.com. one bay area lawmaker is pushing for changes to the inspection procedures at all state managed dams in the wake of the oroville crisis. mark levine wants all auxiliary spillways at dams to be physically inspected once a year. a new bill he's creating would make that a requirement. the bill would also require operators to update their procedures and manuals. the oroville dam manual was last updated in 1970. in the meantime state water officials say they flurshed mor than 40 feet of water since sunday and the possibility of another evacuation this weekend is low. >> this is still an emergency situation, there is still risk.

people need to be prepared and we're monitoring the situation very, very, very closely. >> i don't know why someone would want to take that from somebody. take a part of their life away. >> tonight a plea from a vietnam vet who lost his purple heart and nearly two dozen other medals when looters swept into the oroville dam evacuation zone. nearly half a century, mike pomeroy kept them locked inside a black case in yuba city. he had told no one about his applicators accomplishments in the military, not even his wife. >> spent four years with ptsd, trying to keep it hidden. >> he served as a medic in vietnam. the stories are still too painful for him to discuss. >> a lot of things went on and you try to bury it and that's it. but the medals were to be passed down to my family and they can

sort out what grandpa did or didn't do. >> the thieves did leave behind the medal citation so they can be replaced but he and his wife hope whoever took the medals has a change of heart and returns them. okay, several people contacted the abc 7 news i-team to investigate why big rigs keep rolling over in their south bay neighborhood. the i-team dug for answers and uncovered a series of accidents at the exact same spot. what caltrans did to the road before the crashes and what it's doing now after the i-team's dan noyes started asking questions. his investigation tonight on abc 7 news at 11:00. tonight a look at a massive landslide in the san bernardino mountains. watch now, you can see the rocks crumbling down the side of the hill. the slide happened yesterday, but is threatening four homes and a fire station in the unincorporated community of forest falls. the mud could trap a couple hundred residents for several days, especially if tonight's storm shifts it even more.

this storm has been intense, especially for southern california. here in the bay area, live doppler 7 showing you where it is still coming down. we have pouring conditions right around san francisco, chinatown, bayview district, mission street, 3rd street. on the peninsula, san mateo, east third avenue, san carlos and san carlos avenue, you're also getting those downpours. in the south bay the rain is light to moderate around san jose and in the east bay i'll step aside, from alameda to san leandro and san lorenzo. you can see the yellows and oranges indicating heavy to moderate rain. around tiburon we're seeing rain coming down and this is going to continue for a couple more hours before things change up. this system is coming in from the south and it's moving northward, so expect some of the rain to lift into the north bay. we do have over three-hour delays at sfo due to the weather there on arriving flights, so if you are picking somebody up, you

see what it looks like right now, it's pretty gloomy. peak wind gusts today, big sur coast, 87-mile-per-hour. mt. de diablo 64. rainfall totals have ranged from 0.96 in san rafael to 0.75 in san francisco. ben lomond picked up almost 2 inches of rain. the current storm is a 2 still. next few hours brief downpours, breezy to gusty conditions, so this moderate strength storm could still cause some downed trees and flooding issues. in southern california, it has just been a mess. they have seen half a foot of flan some areas. if you're traveling down south, this is going to be treacherous traveling conditions. just check the roadways. all roads leading to tahoe except for 50 requiring chains. so 88, 4 and 80 all requiring chains. winter weather advisory for the sierra until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
