good morning to you. i'm adrienne bankert. >> and i'm gio benitez. diane and kendis are off. here are some of the stories we're following on "world news now." the president clears up the international confusion caused by his cryptic comments about sweden which seemed to suggest some kind of terror attack. the president says he was referring to swedish crime in general. not my president's day protests taking place across the nation today. thousands are expected to hit the streets in los angeles, new york and chicago and other cities. and u.s.-backed iraqi forces have resumed their efforts to take back mosul from isis. it is the last stronghold in the country, but the u.n. warns that

officials who wondered what he was talking about. here's abc's richard cantu. >> reporter: in one of his now familiar free-wheeling speeches, president trump included these remarks. >> you look at what's happening in germany. you look at what's happening last night in sweden. sweden. who would believe this? sweden? they took in large numbers. they're having problems like they never thought possible. you look at what's happening in brussels. you look at what's happening all over the world. take a look at nice. take a look at paris. >> reporter: and that set off a trans-atlantic tizzy. many thought the president seemed to be including sweden with brussels, nice and paris, all targets of terror attacks. but swedish authorities reported there was no terrorism there friday. the swedish government asked the state department for clarification. a former swedish prime minister tweeting, sweden? terror attack? what has he been smoking? questions abound. on sunday, the white house explaining the president was talking about rising crime and recent incidents in general and not referring to a specific

incident. adding that the president was referencing a news report he had seen the night before. president trump heads back to washington, facing a crowded slate of problems. he's promised a new version of his travel ban, his first one halted by the courts, and he has yet to name a new national security adviser. in florida sunday he met with four possible replacements after michael flynn was asked to resign. that selection is expected soon. richard can tu, abc news, new york. two members of the national security council have now been ousted in less than a week. political appointee, craig deare was fired after making critical comments in a private speech. he was named head of the council's western hemisphere division months ago. his firing came four days after michael flynn resigned as national security adviser. canada is feeling the impact of the president's promise to crackdown on undocumented immigrants. there's a dramatic increase in people trying to cross america's

the influx really picking up in november. election night, the canadian immigration website crashing. here in upstate new york, a steady stream of people using these closed roads to illegally cross into canada. canada allowed nearly 40,000 syrian refugees into their country in the past year. in a joint news conference with president trump, justin trudeau promising canada will remain open. >> we continue to pursue our policies of openness towards immigration refugees without compromising security. >> reporter: so far this weekend, immigration lawyers tell us there has been a steady stream of people crossing into canada and it does not appear to be slowing down anytime soon. eva pilgrim, abc news, champlain, new york. officials are telling resident of northern california to be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice. a new strong system is moving in bringing strong winds, heavy rain, flash flooding and mud slides and other problems are likely in the already saturated area. some residents of the town of maxwell have already evacuated. storm runoff overwhelmed a creek, flooding parts of the

rice-farming community about an hour north of sacramento. half a mile north of los angeles, they're cleaning up from a powerful windstorm that knocked down dozens of trees. one of the trees fell on a moving vehicle while others knocked down power lines. it's so interesting. maxwell, really tiny story, is the town of my first grade teacher's mother. so i know i need to make a phone call or send an e-mail after this broadcast. the focus is on the weather in northern california but it's not the only area expecting weather. >> accuweather eps cam tran is here with the forecast. >> we are looking at the barrage of storm systems continuing out in the west coast with another one moving in right now. another one moving in late tonight into tomorrow. and between the two storm systems we're looking at over three inches of rainfall across the bay area. locally higher amounts across the central valleys of california and foothills, including the oroville area. in the sierras, above 7,000

remove assange from the embassy if he's elected. now a runoff in the election appears like lay. kim dotcom could be headed to the u.s. for trial. a judge has upheld an earlier court ruling which cleared the way. he and his colleagues face racketeering and money laundering charges over mega upload. a desperate manhunt is under way for the primary suspect of the murder of two young girls in indiana. this man was photographed along a nature trail along the same time those two girls disappeared. he is suspected in the 13 and 14 year old's murder. the bodies of liberty german and abigail williams were found nearly a week ago near a creek. they never returned home from a hiking trip. >> he's going to have some history with this trail and with the surrounding area. because it's not something that someone probably traveled from a distance away. he knew the trail was there. they just happened to be on it that day.

i couldn't agree more, but i also know t.r. wrote that more than a decade after he left office. while he was still in the office, he coined the term muckrakers. he claimed they were focussed on so much negative, they were missing the good in the world, including what he was doing as president. and that brings me to president donald trump who has taken presidential criticism of the news media to a new level. in a way it surprised me. the donald trump that i knew as a young reporter in new york was nothing if not media friendly. and for most of the past republican primary, he was the most accessible major candidate. no ones was even close. at thursday's press conference, we saw flashes of that. 17 reporters called on. many that he knew would ask

tough questions. but now the president has declared the press the enemy of the american people. i've reported in countries where leaders not only complain about a critical press but also try to shut it down. throwing reporters in prison or worse. i've seen my colleagues risk their lives and with increasing frequency lose their lives in the pursuit of the truth. we are not about to stop doing our jobs because yet another president is unhappy with what he reads or hears or sees on tv news. there is a reason the founders put freedom of the press in the very first amendment to the constitution. as long as american democracy remains healthy, there will be reporters willing to pursue the truth, even if that means incurring the wrath of the most powerful person in the world. a free press isn't the enemy of america. it's a big part of what makes america great. >> and that was our jonathan karl. on this week with stephanopoulos. this was the topic of conversation on all the sunday morning talk shows.

that announcement expected to be coming soon. mary bruce, abc news, west palm beach. all right, mary traveling with the president, thank you so much. anti-trump protesters are using today's holiday to stage "not my president's day" rallies all across the nation. thousands are expected to protest in l.a., new york, chicago and possibly two dozen other cities. on sunday, more that's a thousand people gathered in times square to protest immigration policies. more than 1,000 people gathered demonstrators held american flags and held signs saying "i am muslim too", and "no muslim ban". new guidelines are being planned from dhs secretary john kelly. they include hiring more agents, speeding up deportation hearings and making local law enforcement to make arrests. the guideline also make it harder to seek asylum in the u.s. overseas where a $100,000 reward is being offered on a deadly bombing in somalia. it happened in mogadishu this weekend. at least 34 people were killed in a blast at a market although no group has claimed responsibility, it bears the hallmarks of al shabab. this weekend. the battle for iraq's second-largest city is on again. iraqi forces have launched a ground offensive to retake the

western side of mosul from isis militants. the eastern side was liberated last month. mosul is the last remaining stronghold held by isis if iraq. the government forces are getting air support from the u.s.-led coalition. the aircraft carrier uss carl vinson is now patrolling the south china sea amid growing tension there. it's where china has created man-made islands. the navy described its presence and routine. last week, china warned against challenging its sovereignty. and the latest in the apparent assassination of kim jong un's half brother. kim jong nam was killed in malaysia last week. malaysia has now recalled its ambassador to north korea as

tensions grow between the two countries. the crime caught on surveillance video. here's abc's matt gutman with the pictures. >> reporter: all it took was 2.3 seconds to deliver death. grainy airport security video obtained by japanese tv station purportedly showing a single, swift move in which one of two female assassins sneaks up on kim jong nam from behind, covered his face with a cloth laced with a liquid. it was poison. later this video showing kim jong nam desperately seeking help from airport security. >> there's every indication based on north korea's history that this was a targeted kill. >> reporter: police say these women were one of the killers. police show her tracking kim jong nam throughout kuala lumpur airport. both are now under arrest. investigators say the other woman claims she thought this was part of a comedy show prank. authorities conducted two

autopsies on the man with a playboy reputation. abc news has learned he enjoyed freaking places like this singapore girls' bar. but north korea has rejected the autopsies. there's now a manhunt for four north korean suspects in malaysia. kim jong un is accused of killing off his own uncle and hundreds of government officials over the past couple years. matt gutman, abc news, los angeles. >> many questions there. now the northwest is bracing for more severe storms, especially in northern california. heavy rain and snow in the mountains are expected through the night and the day. forecasters are warning that flash flooding and mudslides are likely even as residents clean up from last week's storms. many residents have bags packed in case they must evacuate their

we have rain moving in and another major storm on tap for tonight and tomorrow. locally higher amounts especially across the central valleys of california and foothills, and that includes the oroville area. we're expecting snow in the higher elevations of the sierras as well. on top of that, winds will be blustery. right along the coastlines, gusts of over 60-65 miles per hour. now in texas, a separate storm system will bring heavy rain across southeast texas, including houston and the galveston area where we have flash flood watches in effect. in washington this week, the week ahead begins with a continued search for a national security adviser. the president met yesterday with at least four possible replacements for michael flynn. the list includes acting national security adviser keith

kellogg, former u.s. ambassador to the u.n., john bolton, lieutenant general h.r. mcmaster and lieutenant general robert caslen. the weekend ended with the white house explaining the president's remarks about sweden at a saturday rally. the comments seemed to indicate there was some sort of attack on the nordic nation on friday. >> you look at what's happening in germany. you look at what's happening last night in sweden. sweden. who would believe this? sweden. >> now a spokesperson says the reference was to rising crime in sweden. not a specific incident. the president tweeted he'd seen the information on a television news report. and vice president mike pence is in brussels today for meetings with nato and european union officials. the vice president and his wife and daughter visited a nazi concentration camp. they placed a wreath at the international memorial at the center of the camp. more than 200,000 people were held at dachau.

officials say the pilot was briefly trapped inside that plane after it crashed. no one on the ground was hurt. but four cars were destroyed or damaged. that piloted is now in the hospital. and a freak accident in new york city. a customer was pinned between shelves when a minute ivan crashes into a convenience store in the bronx. >> wow. the victim disappears from sight as food and merchandise tumbled on top of him. but we're told he is, remarkably, going to be okay. >> incredible. investigators in a washington, d.c., suburb are searching for the cause of a fire that destroyed a multi-million dollar home. fire crews say their efforts were hampered because there were no fire hydrants nearby. something neighbors have complained about before. here is abc's stephanie ramos. >> reporter: this is what's left of a multi-million dollar mansion in a northern virginia suburb. >> fire had gone through the roof. >> reporter: fire gutted this 6,000 square foot home, nestled in a neighborhood not far from the cia headquarters.
