where you live. this is abc 7 news. the big storm that's soaking the bay area is causing all sorts of problems that may get even worse like the rising water in santa cruz county which is under a flood water. and this is what the system looks like from live doppler 7. you can see lots and lots of green and a little yellow, which means rain and more rain. good morning and thanks for joining us. let's take you around the bay to see what's going on. take a look at our camera where we want to show you the pictures there, foggy and misty and the wind blowing through the trees. it looks messy there. traffic on the bridges moving smoothly today because of the holiday. you can see traffic on the san

matteo bridge is traveling at the limit. lonnie rivera is at santa cruz. francis, you're watching our storm system. >> reporter: we have seen relentless rain over the last few hours. i will take you live doppler 7. just nonstop this morning. we will zoom in tighter to heavier rain falling in parts of the peninsula and south san francisco. to give you an idea of how much rain this is the areas of orange that's a rate of about .7 inches an hour. the areas of yellow about a quarter inch an hour. we will continue to see this all day which is where there is a flash flood warning that's been issued by the national weather service for many areas, you can see highlighted in green, parts of the north bay and seen santa cruz and monterey bay. on our storm impact scale this is a strong storm it ranks a level three. downpours throughout the day, damaging winds with gusts up to 65 miles per hour, all those warnings in effect and we are going to see the heaviest rain

in the next few hours. cheryl. >> frances, thanks very much. let's head to santa cruz county where the storm has a lot of people very earned concerned. a flood advisory is in effect there. lonnie rivera joins us from felton. lonnie. >> reporter: cheryl, i'm standing underneath the felton covered bridge and below us here you can see the river. this is the san lorenzo river, you can see the current is pretty strong, quite a bit of erosion, no flooding yet. now, since today is a holiday many families just came out to take a look at the river's water level. the found of felton has a rich history by having one of the oldest covered bridges in the country. in 1982 storms it damaged the history landmark, five years later it was restored. locals remember that storm, one man came out to have a look and he is willing to offer friends a place to stay if there's flooding. >> it kind of keeps me in tune with what, you know -- what people are encountering right

now and stuff and i've got friends that live by the river and if it were up a lot higher than this i'd call them up and say, hey, do you need help or anything like that. >> reporter: farther upstream the current knocked down some trees and there's a lot of emotion, but the levels have not reached flood stage, at least here. but it's early and as you can see back out here live the rain is falling. this advisory is just a reminder for people to watch the levels and of course look for erosion. and mudslides. just on this hillside below us we see quite a bit of mudslides each driving down here we saw many mudslides along 17. live in felton, lonnie rivera, abc 7 news. >> thanks very much. on the peninsula traffic is moving once again after flooding and several car accidents in redwood city caused a big backup on northbound highway 101 between woodside road and whipple avenue this morning. the highway patrol said nobody was seriously hurt in those

accidents. they happened about 4:30 this morning, but the chp was forced to close all of the lanes because so much water was there. they were dealing with six inches to a foot of flooding on 101. >> it's going to be raining it seems like all day. we encourage people to slow down, check your tires and windshield wipers, have your lights on and make sure you're driving in a safe manner. >> caltrans and county road crews had to drain the flooded portion of highway 101 before reopening all of the lanes between woodside and whipple around 9:20 this morning. take a look at this new video from pg & e crews shoring up a hillside in orinda, they are trying to prevent a land slide from getting any worse. the landslide which was spotted weeks ago is threatening a transmission tower, but if by chance the tower is compromised service should not be interrupted because power can just be rerouted which is good news there. the lack of power was an

issue in one san jose neighborhood after an suv crashed into a power pole. take a look at the scene on capitol expressway near capitol avenue. at one point live lines were across the roadway, that blacked out traffic lights and dta lines, transportation lines in the area. nobody was hurt. we contacted pg & e before the newscast we have not heard back yet as to whether the power has been restored. new pictures tweeted by alameda county show a major slope failure near castro valley. officials say the roadway is completely unpassable this is between palace ver days and niles canyon road. a closer look at all that mud and rocks. we don't have an estimate yet on when the road might reopen. residents along coyote creek in san jose are on alert. continuing releases from the anderson reservoir are causing water levels to rise. the mayor posted a warning on facebook saying areas where the creek narrows such as rock

springs and golden wheel park may see some flooding. free sandbags are available in several locations around the city if you need them, just log on to abc7news.com to find a spot near where you live. and here in san francisco the down pour is causing a soggy mess and putting a damper on renovations at alamo square park. kate larson joins us with more. kate. >> reporter: well, cheryl, right now alamo square park is fenced off and behind that fence is a muddy mess ever since they started their construction project and of course all of this rain that we have had this winter. that, however, has not stopped the tourists who have come from all over the world. there is a family that i just spoke to from france. of course, everyone wants to get a glimpse of the famous painted ladies in the full house opener, however, the view not quite as spectacular because you can't get into most of alamo square park. take a look at this, most of the park is fenced off except for a

small section. this was closed off last may, the san francisco recreation and parks department says the project which includes a restroom renovation and irrigation overhaul should be complete by early this spring, however, neighbors who live here and see this park every day are skeptical about the timeline which they say has already been pushed back because of course, the weather has been delaying a lot of construction. >> tractors started working on the 3rd and they haven't been back since, i think because of the rain. and then when they opened the second viewing area it used to be gorgeous grass and as soon as they opened it now it's all torn up and muddy. >> it's like really muddy and a little disappointed, but it's still a nice view. >> i think it's a bummer not to be able to see them clearly and take a nice picture. >> so a few of the tourists a little disappointed they can't get that perfect shot of the green rolling hills of the park just like that show opener in

"full house," but that has not stopped the people from coming here. we have reached out to the city and the recreation and parks department to find out exactly where they are with this renovation project and neighbors of course totally understand that the rain has delayed their project, they just hope the park can open sooner rather than later. for now that's the latest here live at alamo square park, i'm kate larson, abc 7 news. all of the rain today would normally cause a big problem with traffic. let's send it back to frances for a check on traffic. >> good morning, everyone. we have had a busy traffic morning as well. and i want to take you to the maps to show you what is going on right now in terms of some closures in parts of the north bay. we will head eefr to highway 37, there has been some closures through that area as you make your way to and from

policies. demonstrators are taking to the streets right now in chicago. so we have some aerial shots of the crowd that's growing near the chicago river and we don't have that right now but we can tell you that hundreds and hundreds of people are gathered there holding signs. a similar scene in new york city just about an hour ago. this was a crowd in columbus circle where haralliers held signs. san francisco plans to join that protest at noon at justin herman plaza. president trump is responding to questions today about comments he made at a campaign rally. the president appeared to be referencing an imaginary incident in sweden. >> reporter: today president trump is blaming the media for his confusing comments that suggested there might have been a terrorist attack in sweden over the weekend. >> you look at what's happening last night in sweden. who would believe this? sweden. they took in charge numbers,

they're having problems like they never thought possible. >> the former swedish prime minister tweeted sweden? terror attack? what has he been smoking? questions a bond. >> the white house later clarified the president was referencing a fox news report on crime in sweden. this morning the president directed another assault on the media writing if i have the public a break. the fake news media is trying to say that large scale immigration in sweden is working out jews u. just brute flee. senator john mccain expressed his concerns about attacks on the media. >> when you look at history the first thing the dictators do is shut down the press. >> reporter: the vice president is trying to reassure eu and nato allies that the u.s. remains committed to a continued partnersh partnership. >> the time has come for our nato allies to step forward. >> reporter: but the eu president continued to express his concern. >> too many in the u.n. opinions have been voiced over this time

for now in our storm watch coverage from marin county, this tree toppled over in inverness. it took down power lines with it. about 150 pg & e customers are without power. this is one of several trees down in marin county. officials have activated the emergency operations center during this storm. you can expect cancellation and delays, take a look at this, if you have a flight out today, especially out of san francisco international airport. this live look from our sfo cam, you can see how foggy and misty it is there. 105 flights have already been

canceled there. the airport spokesperson tells us 147 flights are delayed right now up to an hour and a half. san jose international says six flights are delayed because of the weather. no major cancellations or delays out of oakland. crews of the oroville dam did manage to make their goal of 50 feet below the spillway last night. engineers say the lake could go up 5 feet from this week's storms, but the reservoir should be able to handle it. crews are still working day and night to fortify the damaged main and emergency spillways. coming up next on abc 7 news at 11:00, tracking today's storm and when it will hit where you live. a lot of places already seeing rain, including walnut creek where we are looking live. meteorologist frances glosten has your full accuweather forecast just ahead.

now an accuweather update. >> good morning, everyone. i'm meteorologist frances dee glassen. we have had over two inches of rain in santa rosa the past hour. live doppler 7 shows the bay area being pounded by rain. we will zoom in tighter to heavier rain in parts of the east bay. those areas of orange is where rain is coming down at over an inch an hour. that's why we have those flash flood warnings and advisories in effect. we see the cloud cover coming our way, it's an atmospheric

weather and that will mean more weather during our day. this ranks a level three, it is strong, downpours as well, damaging winds with gusts up to 60 miles an hour and i mentioned those flash flood and flood warnings. this is going to hit right through the heart of the bay area. you notice some of the biggest rainfall we will see is in san francisco and oakland, possibly over 3 inches in many areas as well over an inch by the end of today. a high wind warning in effect it kicks in at 1:00, so we see these strong gusts 60 miles per hour from the south and again expect downed trees and power lines with these winds. the wind will stick with us throughout the evening so you may hear it as you go to get, the winds howling tonight. check out the next few hours, we will still see more heavy rainfall through the bay area even some red there, those downpours through the santa cruz mountains making it dangerous. it will continue into the evening then we will finally get a break later on tonight into tomorrow, we will start off with a wet commute with still some heavy rain falling and then

hopefully by lunchtime we can give the umbrellas a little bit of a break. a winter storm warning in effect until tomorrow night. we are talking 2 to 5 feet of snow above 6,000 feet. if you can avoid driving two and from the sierra for the next couple days that will be your best bet. temperatures are mild, though, most of us will be in the mid to upper 50s. here is a look at the accuweather seven-day forecast. so we have the heavy rain and strong winds to contend with today but then by tomorrow it will turn into scattered showers, the chance tapers on wednesday, finally break on thursday before some light rain friday and saturday. so the rain has been relentless and we will see some damaging downpou downpours, it's going to happen in the next few hours. you can always day updated by down loading our abc 7 news app. >> you can come into out of the rain now. >> thank you so much. moving on to some very, very serious news here. texas is cleaning up this morning from violent storms in
