now at 6:00, the worst of the storm is gone, but the commute still going to be damp and slow. this is a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. you can see the sheen on the roadway right now. >> time to go back to work after the holiday yesterday. overnight flooding and mudslides. this is what you're going to see near black hawk this morning. the road washed out. alexis, we're seeing quite a few problems on the roads. yeah, we sure are. i just checked. we're close to 50 incidents right now, by far the slowest spot is going to be westbound 580. pothole repairs once again today. that shut down two lanes around north flynn road. they got those back open about 15, 20 minutes ago but tracy to dublin, 1 hour, 45 minutes, these speeds improving just a little bit. we are over 2 hours just a while
6:01 am
ago. reggie and natasha showed you the bay bridge toll plaza. those metering lights on at 5:24 this morning so not the holiday light commute that we had yesterday. let's check in with meteorologist mike. we've got spots of moderate this morning as well. my wife was on the road right before that washout happened. guess what's getting hit again, that same area, alameda creek and niles canyon where we have the flood warning right now. that's where the heavy rain's falling all the way into livermore, right up vasco road and into the altamont pass. we have scattered showers in the north bay and they're much lighter. here's a look from our roof camera where we had about 1/4 inch. temperature 58 to 54 this morning, scattered showers this afternoon to isolate sod they will decrease as we head through the day. and as we feerd, the hours of rain that we got was just relentless, caused quite a bit of flooding throughout the bay area. >> that includes the south bay and los gatos creek.
6:02 am
lonni rivera is there to show us the impact now. >> reporter: yes, natasha, light drops coming down here and you can see behind us, the los gatos creek raging here and right beside it, the trail so close this morning because the water flooded that trail. and in san jose, coyote creek, also flooded. a mobile home park there, fire crews had to pump water out of the park. no one was evacuated but people have packed their cars and they're getting ready just in case the situation gets worse. also, another situation in campbell involving a tree that came down on an apartment there. took a while for them to clear the branches and we heard from one of the men who lived there. >> i'm sure this isn't the only place where this is happening. i'm sure there's trees blowing down all over the place with the weather. >> reporter: and drivers dealt with flooding on highway 280 near winchester. lanes were underwater and it
6:03 am
backed up traffic for quite a while. back out here live, los gatos creek, pretty full this morning. the rain is coming down, and the trail beside it is still flooded. we're live in los gatos, lonni rivera, abc7 news. thanks for that update and they can out this new video. see that? this is the first floor of a parking garage at san jose's minetta international airport. terminal a, crews are working to remove that water right now. we are making calls to get an update. take a look at the new video of the massive tree that crashed into two homes in alamo. this is near danville road. the tree toppled just before 9:00 last night. a strong winds began to whip up. one family got out okay. it is not clear if anyone was in the second house. no injuries were reported but both houses did sustain damage. i want you to pay attention to this next person's attitude, okay? a tree lands on her houses, a huge tree. this is in petaluma and she is
6:04 am
really taking it with a lot of, i don't know, humility. >> taking it in stride. >> bridget mortimer says these were not the home improvements she was planning to make. she was sleeping saturday night when her dogs alerted her that there was a problem. they just kept barking all night long before that tree came down. >> it was like a heavy truck going down the street. i thank god i wasn't injured and it's only a house. it's only a house. everybody told me i have to downsize. what a way to do it. >> she has a really good sense of humor. she says her son's truck that you see there is the one that really took the brunt of the fall and she's just thankful that everybody's okay. >> really a joy about her. lovely. in marin county, flooding not the issue so much, it is the mudslides. take a look. the slide just outside of san rafael closed part of highland avenue. that is a road used by the residents. a eucalyptus tree at the top of the hill caused concern for road crews who removed it before it
6:05 am
could come crashing down. near tiburon, crews cleared another mudslide. with the holiday yesterday, first of all fortunately a lot of people were off the roads and that made clean-up a lot faster. storm damage has forced caltrans to shut down parts of highway. downed trees and mudslides are the cause of the closure. drivers now asked to use highway 17 as a detour into and out of santa cruz. keep in mind the chp is reporting a rock slide has closed southbound highway 17. and caltrans is reinspecting the pfeiffer canyon bridge in monterey county today and you are looking at the reason why. you see all those cracks right there? that is the problem. it actually moved that area, that support, a half foot in one day. this is just south of big sur along highway 1. caltrans says it's moving because of mudslides under the bridge. they do not expect to find it safe enough to open today. you can see some of the crashing waves pacifica had its
6:06 am
share of problems, high winds pounding the coast there. now, high surf forced officials to close pacifica pier all day yesterday. the wind was so strong at times, so residents went to go down to see for themselves. they say they've seen higher waves over the years, but they say last night's conditions were pretty impressive. an abc7 news viewer shared video. we want you to share the video where you live. uses #abc7now so we can find it and share it. in oakland, one person died after a car caught fire last night. this was the scene at 7th and willow around 10:30. firefighters tried pulling the victim out. it was too late. we don't know yet what started that fire. all the rain we've been getting has filled bay area reservoirs to the brim and this is incredible. a new look at this unique spillway. an east bay city says little-known clause is grounds to impeach president trump. the action they plan to take

6:09 am
okay, things are starting to look better getting out of tracy
6:10 am
this morning and boy i know we've got some weary drivers. we've had this same issue three times now. major potholes form around north flynn road. chp and caltrans responded very quickly, got those patched up. hopefully those will hold here for the rest of the morning commute and beyond and we're starting to pick up speed. all lanes are back open, 17 miles per hour as you approach altamont pass, still very heavy getting out of tracy, though, you are down to 2 miles per hour. i've heard from some drivers who are saying, i better leave now because it took over 3 hours at one point a couple weeks ago to come into the dublin area. 30-minute drive, westbound 4 between antioch and concord and nothing blocking there, just stop and go traffic. also had an issue here on the san mateo bridge. you can see at the bottom of your screen, couple vehicles. that is a collision pretty minor though and they were able to push themselves off to the shoulder. so that one should not be a major blocking issue. we'll take a look at drive times coming up. right now, let's check in with
6:11 am
mike nicco. fingers crossed in the weather center that those potholes that are mended stay that way. update on flood warnings. they continue for lower laguna de santa rosa and mark west creek up in sonoma county until about 11:15 and another one for alameda creek. it's 5.5 feet above flood stage right now and guess what just rolled through yeah, there. look at that. moderate rain. and look at these heavy downpours possible. some mudslides developing on 17 and 9. we'll keep an eye on it for you. here's a look at richmond. 1/4 inch from one of the downpours earlier. wet morning for public transit. same thing if you're commuting by car or ferry. temperatures will hang outs in the upper 50s to low 60s but it's going to be cold tonight. maybe sure you have that heater turned on or grab an extra blanket. 030s and 40s tomorrow morning. got a string of dry days in the forecast.

welcome back, and here at the live desk, i want to get straight to these live images coming out of philadelphia where the train has deramed and we've watching these images come through. this is a passenger train. about 9:00 a.m. on the east coast. that's still rush hour as people go to work but interesting, we are now hearing there were no passengers on this train. that's good news. it derailed as you can see from this image at a turn around point at one point, i saw at least five fire trucks, we had five ambulances on stand by as well as more than 15 police
6:16 am
cars. they are starting to leave now that we have learned that there's no passengers on the train. engineers in the area, though, still assessing exactly what went wrong in this situation. we'll keep tracking it. happening today, a move to prevent another tragedy like the ghost ship fire in oakland. council members plan to discuss ways to fund and implement procedures that will increase safety in commercial and industrial spaces. they include providing housing assistance for people living in unpermitted spaces and staffing to identify safety violations and enforce housing codes. officials say violations such as illegal living quarters tangled wiring and poorly built stairways essentially trapped the 36 people who were killed in december's ghost ship fire. happening today, an east bay city is expected to be the first in the country to consider a measure seeking the impeachment of president trump. our media partner "the mercury news" reports the richmond city council will be considering a resolution calling on the house of representatives committee of the judiciary to investigate
6:17 am
whether the president's business holdings warrant impeachment. his opponents say the president's business interests often collide with his executive duties. so, one example, soon after mr. trump took office, membership fees to his florida resort, mar-a-lago, doubled to $200,000 a year. the white house has said the president does not have any ethics conflict. vice president mike pence's trip to brussels is raising some eyebrows this morning and it's not for anything he said. people noticed something unusual during a news conference between pence and the head of the european union council yesterday. it's hard for you probably to see, but you might notice the american flag on that video wall behind pence, it has 51 stars, not the usual 50. so far, the eu council hasn't explained what happened. okay. the actual pothole problem has been repaired, and we've got all lanes back open, westbound 580 at north flynn road so altamont pass drivers, this is for you. we still have some long residual
6:18 am
delays out of tracy, that 1 hour, 48 minutes, and we're having a hard time getting moving once again now that we're really at the peak commute for that central valley drive and your main alternate there, ace rail, not running today due to weather-related issues on the track. drive, car pool, find another form of mass transit. also want to talk about a new problem, southbound 680 on burnl avenue off ramp, vehicle fire so at least part of that ramp is blocked. very heavy delay on the main line and that is backed up into dublin to the 580 interchange there so definitely expect delays. niles canyon road is also closed due to flooding so that's another alternate that you can not use this morning. and a ten-minute delay for b.a.r.t. riders. that was due to an earlier train that broke down in the transbay tube. that's out of there now so just making up for that at this point. we'll take a look at the bay bridge commute in less than ten. let's check in with mike
6:19 am
good morning, alexis. do i care adare ask, are you tired of the rain and wind? always ask a question that you know the answer to, right? i've got some good news for you. yes we have gusted at 24 at sfo, but that's as fast as they get. everybody less than that so we're already seeing the transition take place. right now, santa rosa, heading down towards rohnert park, yountville, st. helena, light shower there. and light shower there. 280 and 17, a lot of water on the roadways, the showers and the winds, yeah, they taper today. chilly mornings, dry afternoons, wednesday through friday, but then we're sacrificing the weekend. wet and cool saturday, sunday, and monday. all right, we've pulled the rains back on this storm significantly. the worst is behind us. this morning, we have some showers. we have some winds, but all that's going to relax as we head into the afternoon and evening hours. in fact, your evening commute is going to be much easier than the morning commute.
6:20 am
another wave of downpours coming from about now through noon and then look at how it just tapers to scattered showers at 5:00. and that's the way it will be all the way through tomorrow. if you get caught under one of those downpours, another 1/4 to 1/3 inch is possible. we don't need the rain. we've exceeded our yearly totals at sfo, san francisco, oakland, santa rosa, and livermore. so, grab the sunglasses, you'll need them this afternoon. you'll need them wednesday, thursday, and friday, but dress warm in the mornings and get the umbrellas ready for some light storms, saturday, sunday, and monday. i heard you say sacrifice the weekend and that did not make he pleased. . good morning america is coming up at 7:00 right here on abc7. good morning, amy. >> good morning to you, natasha and reggie. coming up next here on gma, president trump naming his replacement for national security adviser, hr mcmaster, receiving praise from both sides of the aisle this morning. this as vice president pence has returned from his overseas trip

6:25 am
potholes, this is a problem we can all relate to, especially with all the wet weather we've been getting. a viewer from san francisco sent us this video, this vicious pothole, this is geary near taylor street. we all know sometimes it's difficult to see potholes when it's filled with rain or when it's dark. be careful. i've blown a tire in san francisco recently. >> so have i. the tire shops are going to be busy today. you have to see this new drone video. we haven't seen something like this in almost a decade. all this rain means it is spilling its way in napa county and it has been ten years since we've seen something like this and we've never seen it from this vantage point. the hole is 8 feet wide. it is 200 feet deep. in october, the lake was halfway full. now, fesofficially full as of friday. time to ask finney. maria from san francisco has a question about social security. she spoke to us at our ask finney event in daly city. "7 on your side's" michael finney has her answer.
6:26 am
>> my question is, what's going to happen to our social security in the nearby future? >> hey, maria, that's a great question. there's a lot of bad information floating around. now, congress could change things but right now, social security is fine. the money is invested in government bonds just like the ones china and the rich guys buy. it is the safest investment on earth. now, if there are no changes made to social security at all, it will continue to pay the full amount for at least 20 more years. then, there could be a reduction in benefits. however, with minor adjustments, the program can be made healthy for decades to come. that doesn't mean that's what the politicians are going to do but that's our situation as it stands right now. >> if you have a question for michael finney, record it on our smartphone or tablet, share it on social media with #askfinney. next at 6:30, a heartbreaking announcement from singer and actor david cassidy,
6:27 am
why he is planning an immediate retirement. and also this week's storm causing a major issues across the state. the levee break threatening hundreds of people in the central valley this morning. we are almost in the clear with this storm but i still have a few concerns i want to let you know about. moderate concerns for some more urban and creek flooding. trees down, mud and rock slides, power outages and river flooding are low. we've got another round or two we've got another round or two of
6:28 am
6:29 am
6:30 am
it is 6:30 and this week's storms caused some big trouble on bay area roadways. this is 880 near dixon landing in fremont. and flooding closed several lanes of a freeway last night. this morning, there's even more trouble on the reeds. good morning to you on this tuesday, february 21, for a lot of you, your first day back to work this week. for all of us, welcome to the world. >> welcome to the world and we have issues greeting you on the roadways and just some light rain today, some light sprinkles, right? >> yeah, late on today. we have downpours out there right now that we're following with live doppler 7 and just now starting to move through liver many, especially the southern parts and up towards the altamont pass and then moving right across our radar and heading over towards morgan hill and some light showers into the sunol grade right now and more showers developing in the north bay and offshore so another round of downpours coming at us through the morning hours but look at from the exploratorium
6:31 am
camera, how less angry the water looks this morning because it's not nearly as windy as it was yesterday. so downpours possible through 7:00. then scattered showers from noon to 4:00 and then even less of a chance, just some isolated showers through 7:00. but any time it rains, it's going to cause some issues. how about it this morning, alexis. yeah, those roads in bad shape, mike and we had a major problem this morning too for oolgts altamont pass. so westbound 580, right around north flynn road, that's where we had that major pothole repair, two right lanes were done, they got that back open about 45 minutes ago but still struggling getting out of tracy, 11 miles per hour, 13 miles an hour, and that's some pretty heavy rain you're seeing on live doppler 7 so that is not helping that backup. live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. 5:24 this morning we got toes metering lights on and yeah, we have been saying welcome back to everyone who was off for president's day yesterday. still have some districts off this week for ski week as well so maybe a little lighter volumes. take a look at drive times coming up. among the places that got so much water, people actually had to be pulled from their cars in
6:32 am
livermore because it was rising so fast. one battalion chief telling us he had never seen anything like it. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with the aftermath of the flooding. >> reporter: yeah, one of those cars just abandoned right here in the middle of collier canyon road and it is surrounded by mud and debris from where this flooding happened. there is quite a mess to clean up here this morning. now check out this incredible video of the flooding that happened here. it came up so fast and caught people by surprise. firefighters say it was chest-high in some places and that they had to rescue at least nine people, seven people from their cars, two people from inside the office buildings where the water also rushed in. >> it was scary. the water came in fast. extremely fast. i mean, we were looking at it in the parking lot, before you knew it, there was a little bit coming under the door, we were talking about it, we all started talking in the office before we looked again, we were trying to
6:33 am
start moving furniture up and the water was just gushing underneath. >> reporter: now we peaked inside an office building here this morning. they still have the blowers in the lobby but it looks dry and clean in there. people are arriving this work this morning say they were here early yesterday morning so they missed all the flooding. they're surprised to see what it looks like, especially out in the parltd. it's still a mess with mud and debris and some cars that may or may not start this morning. at this point, they think a culvert must have been blocked and local creeks overflowed and that's what caused all of this. the water is now gone. but you can see still a mess out here in the road and the parking lot. live in livermore, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. amy, thank you. thousands are still without power this morning. >> jessica keeping an eye on things through the morning. just got some new info. things are getting better. the number of people without power in the bay area now at 16,000, which is down from 20,000 earlier this morning.
6:34 am
got those new numbers from pg&e. i can tell you that the south bay is still the hardest hit area. they have about 13,000 customers right now without power. i do want to show you that little closer. mountain view, sunnyvale, that area, still seems to be dealing with the most outages. and the most customers affected there. city of san francisco, though, looks great. no outages reported and city, we have about 1200 in the north bay, less than 1,000 in the east bay and peninsula in the dark. reggie, natasha, back to you. people living in a mobile home park along rain swoling coyote creek in san jose, they're ready to evacuate at any minute. that creek is being overwhelmed by water coming out of anderson reservoir. this neighborhood is on oakland road. it's right next to the creek. you see those photos from the san jose fire department and they show water flooding a section of that neighborhood. firefighters are trying to prevent evacuations. right now, they are pumping water out of the lot. palomares road is closed
6:35 am
this morning. you're looking at the reason why. mud and rocks sliding down the hillside and blocking lanes. >> this is the worst i've seen so far. i've only lived out here for four years. the one we had on january 10 was bad and this has topped it. >> the road is closed now between palo verde road and niles canyon road in fremont. no estimate on when that section of road could reopen. hundreds of people remain under a mandatory evacuation order because of a levee break. 500 residents who live south of highway 120 near manteca along the river have now been told to get out of there. you can see the affected area. that is in green on your map. the concern is that more water is now headed toward manteca because of releases at the reservoir. evacuations started after someone noticed a sinkhole in the levee yesterday afternoon. firefighters and farmers, they used rocks and sand to reinforce the weak spot in the levee.
6:36 am
officials now monitoring it very closely. >> mandatory evacuation is going to stay in place until we have daylight and we can get a better sight on where we're at. and we have more water coming in, obviously. so that's of great concern as well. >> that temporary patch is going to be tested this afternoon when the heaviest water flow is expected. >> the water eing released from the reservoir is expected to flood low lying areas south of manteca and push the river above flood stage. don pedro lake is within a few feet of capacity now and this is the first time the reservoir's flood gates have been opened in 20 years. only the second time in its history. officials expect to continue releasing water for several days. a chp officer is recovering this morning after a driver crashed into his patrol car in los altos. that driver died at the hospital last night. this happened just after 7:00 on interstate 280. the officer was waiting for a tow truck for a car that got stuck in the mud.
6:37 am
that's when a driver lost control, hit the back of the patrol car. the officer was not seriously hurt. and that investigation shut down all but one lane of 280 for nearly six hours. traffic is moving on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains thanks to the team work of strangers. see this big tree blocking the highway yesterday? people did not want to wait around for crews. one man just got out his chain saw, he cut it into enormous pieces and others dragged away the debris. in all, it took them about an hour and a half to clear both directions. we want to thank our viewers for sharing these images with us. if you take any photos or videos of the weather where you live, share it with us using #abc7now. we'll show it on air on online at abc7news.com. also, you can track the storm with the abc7 news app. we have live doppler 7 on the app. you can enable push alerts to get weather advisories right on your phone or tablet. four american tourists died
6:38 am
in a small plane crash in australia. the plane went into a shopping mall and burst into flames shortly after it took off from melbourne this morning. police say the pilot who also died reported a catastrophic engine failure moments before the plane went down. those four americans were on a golfing vacation. two of them from texas. i understand the mall that it crashed into was not open at the time, thank goodness. no word yet on where the other two people who were killed are there. a man who killed a police officer in southern california is now suspected of killing his own cousin just hours before. officer keith boyer was ponding to a crash yesterday when the man pulled out a gun and opened fire. boyer died, another officer was wounded. other officers responding to the scene shot the man when he pointed the gun at them. that man survived. hundreds gathered to honor the 27-year police veteran last night. officer boyer was close to retirent. the other officer who was hurt is expected to survive. happening today, breitbart

peaceful. i'm going to give you an update on flooding that's happening down in the south bay. the flow out of anderson dam is so strong that it's causing flooding downstream in coyote creek. this is going to continue until about 11:30 this morning so if you see some water coming at you, react quickly and seek higher ground immediately. now we've got a slower flood developing for the rest of the coyote creek all the way up to milpitas. this is going to be around through friday. flood stage is 10 feet. crest at about 12.3 so we're not even there yet. thankfully just light rain falling over this area right now. so your commute today, the morning's going to be the worst. standing water left from the pouring or the downpours we had last night and still a chance of downpours, especially south of the bay bridge for the next couple of hours. little breezy out there. but look at the evening. much dryer and lighter. let's talk temperatures.
6:41 am
