good morning. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm diane macedo. here are some of the top stories we're following this morning on "world news now." reaction is coming in on both sides of the issue after the white house rescinded is federal guidelines regarding transgender student bathroom use. the move leaves it up to the individual states to set their own policies. we have full details ahead. most of the protesters now gone from the camp at the dakota access pipeline after the government ordered them to leave for safety concerns. as they left, they set fire to the camp shacks, more details coming up. we have breaking news. iraqi forces have retaken control of mosul airport from isis. the liberation of the airport and a nearby military camp was confirmed overnight by joint operations command. this follows some heavy clashes. there was one winning ticket for last night's $435 million powerball jackpot.

>> reporter: protesters outside the white house wednesday evening supporting gavin grim, the 17-year-old face who has become the face of whether transgender students should be able to tuesday bathrooms based on gender identify? notice one month i do what few teenagers have a chance to do, stand before the united states supreme court. >> reporter: gavin may now never have his day in court. justices could decide not to hear the case now that the white house has ended federal protections for transgender students. that reverses an obama administration rule that granted transgender students access to restrooms in line with their expressed gender identity and not their biological sex. the justice and education department saying the issue is not a federal one and should be up to each state. >> the president made it clear throughout the campaign he's a firm believer in states' rights and certain issues like this are not best dealt with at the federal level. >> reporter: gavin hopes the move is just a temporary setback. >> i hope they move towards acceptance in the future.

protests in anaheim after an off-duty lapd officer fired his weapon during a confrontation with teams. -- teens. demonstrators demanding his firing. the incident was captured on video. you see here the off duty officer is in the plaid shirt arms locked in confrontation with that teenage boy each pushing against each other. at one point the officer pulls out a gun and fires the weapon. >> but he was telling somebody that he was going to shoot them, in reality he was saying i'm going to sue you. you kept hitting me, you're hurting me. i'm going to sue you. >> police say there have been on going issues with kids walking across the officer's property. no one was hurt during the confrontation. but the officer has been placed on administrative leave. some residents in san jose california, are blaming bad information for the magnitude of damage from extensive flooding.

underground and destroy the tribe's way of life, that snake they say the oil pipeline. the original 1851 treaty, the sioux nation signed with the u.s. government. native american tribes have been negotiating with washington for centuries. but the close of the 19th century, the sioux had endured abusive assimilation, the outlawing of their religion, dependence on government rations and the massacre at wounded knee. >> today we're saying no, don't put this here. enough is enough. respect our lands. respect our people. respect our rights. >> reporter: suddenly, what appears to be a stunning it reversal. on december 4th, the airplane -- army corps of engineers announces it will not approve the easement needed for the pipeline to cross the missouri river pledging to consider alternative routes in a full environmental impact statement. >> i'm so happy right now. >> i'm really proud to be living be here at this time. this is history.

>> reporter: but it is a short-lived victory. >> this is with respect to the construction of the dakota access pipeline. >> reporter: less than a week after taking office, president donald trump signs a memorandum ordering the army corps of engineers to review the pipeline in an expedited manner. >> it makes me laugh when i hear the president worried about the safety of this nation because of immigrants. he's an immigrant bringing harm to this nation. he's the first immigrant. we're the only ones that can claim we're not immigrants. >> reporter: energy transfer partners says oil could be flowing in as little as two weeks and in a statement to abc news, the company said they are committed to the safe construction and operation of all its pipelines throughout the country. dakota access is state-of-the-art underground pipeline with advanced safety technology and construction methods. >> we will not quit fighting until this pipeline has stopped. >> reporter: the tribes will be in court next week seeking an
