good morning on this friday. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm adrienne bankert in for diane macedo. here are some of the top headlines we're following on this "world news now." homeland security secretary john kelly pledging that the u.s. will not use the military to enforce immigration laws and that there will be no mass deportations. his comments coming after the president called the deportations a military operation. breaking news from the nation's capital where two d.c. police officers were shot and are recovering right now after they were shot last night in the city's northeast section. the suspect was also shot and killed. malaysian police say a deadly nerve agent caused the death of north korea's death of the half-brother of north korea's leader. it was found on kim jong nam's body. he died after an attack nearly

two weeks ago. los angeles is one of two cities left vying to host the 2024 summer olympic games. paris is the other city bidding the games. budapest dropped out. a decision will be made in september. those are some of our top stories. it is friday, february 24th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> welcome to the news this morning on friday. happy weekend to you. we begin this half hour with what appears to be diverging policy inside the white house over the president's crackdown on undocumented immigrants. >> as some of them begin arriving in mexico city, the president called it a military operation. but then his own homeland security secretary offered a completely different view. so what's the real thing here? abc's matt gutman has the details from the arizona border.

some estimates put that figure as high as 99. meanwhile, president trump is once again threatening to intervene tweeting, seven people shot and killed yesterday in chicago. what is going on there? totally out of control. chicago needs help! >> he's not the only one asking that question. attorney general jeff sessions is reversing an obama administration decision to phase out private prisons as we go to our next story. then deputy general salliates determined that private prison weren't as well run and were unnecessary given the overall decline in prison populations. sessions says that decision changed long-standing policy and impaired the ability of the bureau of prisons to do its job. headlining in the news overseas, iraqi forces with support from the u.s. say they're making good progress battling isis for control of iraq's second largest city. they've moved into a sprawling military base outside mosul and are now in control of the city's airport and that is very key. their progress is being met by

the president making it clear he wants the u.s. to be the world's dominant nuclear power. in a new interview, the president said he would like to see a world without nuclear arms but he said if there are going to be nukes, then the u.s. is going to be at the top of the pack. we should point out russia currently has more nuclear warheads than the u.s. but both countries have more than enough to destroy the world. the president raised eyebrows when he referred to the deportation of undocumented immigrants as a military operation. press secretary sean spicer later explains that the president was using that phrase to mean, precision. homeland security chief john kelly traveling in mexico took a tougher stance stating clearly there will be no mass deportations and no use of military force during immigration operations. >> kelly made those comments while in mexico city with secretary of state rex tillerson by his side. they were meeting with the mexican president and his

cabinet trying to alleviate their concerns over new u.s. immigration policies, a task made tougher after the president's remarks. there have been new protests against president trump's rollback of transgender protections in public schools. demonstrators outside new york's landmark stone wall inn chanted and held signs in support of transgender youth. the inn is considered the birthplace of the gay civil rights movement. the roll back gives power back to states and school districts to decide the issue. >> i think it's not a question of whether it's a civil right, whether it's appropriately addressed. as i noted it's appropriately addressed at the state level. and long time republican and transgender activist caitlyn jenner is speaking out about the policy reversal asking president trump to give her a call. jenner tweeting to the president, "from one republican to another, this is a disaster." the former olympian had a message of support for transgender youth. >> new questions about ivanka trump's role at the white house. she had a seat at the table with manufacturing ceos at the white

house. sources say she recently hosted republican members of congress to discuss a child care tax proposal and paid maternity leave. it was a big issue that she discussed on the campaign trail. such a policy meeting is considered unusual for the child of a president with no formal role in the administration. and we do have breaking news right now about a new police shooting, this one not far from capitol hill. details still sketchy. but two d.c. police officers were shot and are now hospitalized. we're told their wounds are not life-threatening but a male suspect was shot and killed. the officers were responding to a report of shots fired. there were three other shooting incidents earlier in another part of the nation's capital. >> and we're also keeping an eye on the severe storm system in the midwest right now. take a look at the radar. that storm is intense from idaho to michigan. the snow and wind will pick up and develop into a blizzard later today. this is a storm system that wreaked havoc in northern

california and has already claimed lives as it moves east. dangerous conditions on i-80 near salt lake city. wow, trucks getting out and catching fire. the driver did not survive. and a more than 200-mile section of the highway in wyoming was closed because the snow made travel a little bit too dangerous. >> this morning, it will be a dangerous commute, as well for those in the upper plains with blizzard conditions for most of the region. by tonight, the area will have gotten 6 to 12 inches of snow. to the south centered around indiana, temperatures will be much warmer and the danger is from damaging winds and hail possibly, even tornadoes. >> to the west coast now, we're learning new details about the confrontation in anaheim, california, that led to an off-duty police officer firing his weapon. new video shows that explosive encounter between an lapd officer and a 13-year-old boy. the incident sparking outrage and protests. the officer claims the teen
