rushed to the hospital after a vicious dog attack ends in a hail of bullets. an 80-pound animal had the boy's head in his mouth. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. tonight officers say they had no choice but to shoot and kill the dog. the attack happened this afternoon on fremont street in concord. >> the baby is being treated at childrens hospital oakland, and that's where abc 7 news report yeh katie udas is live with this developing story. >> reporter: i spoke with the baby's father on the phone and he told me he's doing okay but he didn't want to comment. he witnessed with his 7-year-old son what police are calling a traumatic event. >> shots fired. shots. >> copy, shots fired on the dog. >> reporter: concord police shot and killed a family dog that moments earlier attacked a 10-month-old boy. >> the dog was very aggressive actually. took an aggressive stance toward our officer. and that's why our officer discharged his firearm. >> reporter: an officer ran inside to get the baby. >> when the officer pulled him

out, quite the emotional scene. having to wrap his head. >> reporter: the boy underwent surgery at oakland children's hospital after suffering bites to the head. he's expected to be okay. but his 7-year-old brother is struggling after witnessing the traumatic attack. >> the 7-year-old started screaming, which caught mom's attention. mom came in there, was able to pull the child away and prevent any further attack. and that probably saved his life. >> reporter: the german shepherd mastiff mix named charlie was 80 pounds. the mother stepped out of the room for a moment before the attack happened. >> talking to mom, sounds like the dog never had any -- never showed any signs of aggression before in the past. and mom actually raised this dog since he was a little pup. >> reporter: neighbors tell abc 7 the dog was aggressive, one neighbor saying it attacked her dog a few years ago. contra costa animal services is investigating. in the east bay, katie udas, abc 7 news. >> we first told you about this

without gas for four days and three very cold nights. >> it's been very hard on him without having the heat and stuff. when you're 70 something. you need your heat. >> reporter: now they're among the lucky ones. their gas is back on. park utilities is going door to door relighting pilot lights. >> the great thing about it is that people always smile when you knock on their door and say they're going to have hot water. >> reporter: city officials have not completely lifted the evacuation order but park management is encouraging people to return. >> we've had three break-ins unfortunately. we've told them if you can try to come back home at least check on your home. >> reporter: people continue to toss out their waterlogged and contaminated belongings. these are hard times for flood victims. janet childs knows. she had to evacuate her mobile home tuesday and she's an expert in traumatic stress. >> do one task at a time that you can accomplish. because that puts you from out of control to in control. the other thing that really helps is being in community. so don't try to go it alone.

last sunday night manny munoz went out to find his car been broken into. three people jumped and robbed him. they fractured bones in his forehead causing him to suffer seizures. munoz is now on medical leave trying to recover. >> everybody pulled together. everybody's working extra shifts to make up. and nobody cares. i mean, that's what we do. that's what you do. you help each other out. >> they sure are. neighbors say they just want to help his family with medical expenses. so far they've raised about $3,500. the woman who claimed in a blog that san francisco-based uber encourages harassment says she's now the target of a smear campaign. today susan fowler asked her twitter followers not to give out any personal information about her. the former engineer left uber in december claiming her manager made sexual advances that weren't investigated. uber says it's in no way involved in a smear campaign, calling that type of behavior wrong. abc 7 news was at the castro theater in san francisco tonight

hoverboards. >> there are the facts that we cannot predict. >> reporter: just weeks ago stanford university professor jenen bao came out with a breakthrough solution. her invention shuts down a battery before it gets hot enough to explode. a first look at how it will work. >> a very simple sheet of film that can be inserted. >> reporter: this metallic film conducts electricity turning on this l.e.d. light. but if she blows hot air onto it, the metal expands so it stops conducting electricity. the l.e.d. light goes off. the battery shuts down before it can explode. >> our main goal is to find new materials for batteries, lithium ion batteries that can fix these safety issues. >> reporter: across the campus doctoral student austin sindek made another discovery. >> it's going to be much more safe, much less likely to blow up. >> reporter: sindek's team is trying to find a substitute for the flammable liquid that can make lithium batteries explode.

>> you have 12,000 candidates that can do the job. >> reporter: scientists identified 12,000 materials that might work. trying them all can take decades and millions of dollars. so sindek invented an algorithm that narrowed it down to just 20 materials. his team will now try them in real batteries. so how long before we see their safer batteries in our devices? >> we invented a new idea, but we still need companies to commercialize it. >> we're looking at about a decade before they're really made on a large scale. >> from a toy battery. >> reporter: it's too late for kathy galvan's family. >> we're not together anymore. >> reporter: everything's gone. the family scattered, living with friends. kathy still coughing from the smoke so thick she was lucky to find her way out of the fire. >> it's something you always think's going to happen to somebody else. be aware. be very aware. be scared. >> reporter: the rechargeable battery association says it has spent billions on research to

chilly with some slick spots this upcoming weekend. we check out live doppler 7. we have some clouds. that green you're seeing there not reaching the ground yet but it will eventually get here and we are really tracking the moisture up to the north. i want to show what you it looks like there. we have showers and snow showers up to the north. temperatures right now in the upper 30s to the upper 40s except around los gatos. pretty chilly at 36 degrees. from our south beach camera we're looking at a beautiful view right now of san francisco. and we are expecting a few cold showers this weekend. snow level down to 2,500 feet. it is going to be sunny and milder tuesday through friday. first thing tomorrow morning it's going to be another chilly one, not quite as cold as what we've seen this morning where we have the upper 20s. tomorrow morning you're going to see the low to mid 30s so that winter chill will be with us. you will also see those spotty showers. i do want to bring in the storm impact scale. this system is a 1 for saturday through monday. spotty light showers. rainfall up to a third of an inch and we're expecting snow over the highest peaks. you heard correct. snow over the highest peaks.

here's the hour by-hour forecast. 1:00 a.m. you're going to be seeing those showers right across the bay area. notice that blue shade up there. the hills in mendocino county looking at some snow showers. 5:00 a.m. tomorrow. just spotty showers. i would carry an umbrella if i were you at noontime. those showers very scant in nature. but as we head into the afternoon and evening this is when the best possibility of seeing that rain moving on shore 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. tomorrow night. if you have plans keep that in mnd. these are both cold systems. this one on sunday is also a cold one. it's not going to hold a lot of moisture but it certainly will bring us those snow showers right on through the evening hours. showers and snow showers, excuse me, around 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. we head into 9:00 and we'll be watching some of those snow showers up to the north. could see some snow as low as mount tam, mount hamilton, mount diablo. don't be surprised if by monday morning you wake up and you're seeing white. sunday night those showers continue. we head into monday and this is

the best possibility of seeing that snow over mount hamilton mixing in with the rain. we continue this trend all the way through monday afternoon and evening. but when you look at the rainfall totals you'll see this is nothing to change up your plans over. rainfall totals are very light. most areas will be a few hundredths of an inch. about a third of an inch at best over three days in half moon bay. here's a look at the winter weather advisory for sierra nevada. if you're traveling up to the mountains if starts at 10:00 a.m. sunday, runs till 4:00 p.m. monday. watch out. snow will be right over the pass passes, gusty winds will make for difficult travel conditions. highs for your saturday on the chilly side low to mid 50s. and the temperature trend something to look forward to. spring is in the air for san jose. you'll notice those temperatures flirting with 70 degrees by the end of the work week next week. on the accuweather seven-day forecast ones for saturday through monday including oscar sunday. you can download the abc 7 news app to help you track these systems. and then we'll go with a dry warmer pattern tuesday through friday of next week. close to 70 degrees. dan and ama.
