good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines this oscar monday. on "world news now," not even the best screen writers in hollywood could have scripted the end of the show. "la la land" first announced as the winner of the best picture, and then the producer corrected the record and announced that "moonlight" won the award. we're live in hollywood to find out what happened. >> host jimmy kimmel got in a few digs at president trump during the show. throughout the night winners mostly stayed away from politics. many of them made pleas for inclusion. our full oscar coverage is straight ahead. the father of william ryan owens who was killed during a raid in yemen is demanding an investigation. bill owens said he refused to meet with president trump when

his son's body was flown back to dover air force base. and spokt expect more charges, at least 19 of them, against the suspect in the drunk driving hit and run at mardi gras. his blood alcohol level was nearly three times louisiana's legal limit. those are just some of the top stories on this monday, february 27th. from abc news, this is "world news now." if there's anything we learned from the oscars, it's that sometimes things don't go according to to plan and you go with it. >> so just give you a sense, normally that little part that says abc news would be lit up at this point. >> those screens over there would have logos nilt. >> these screens wouldn't have multiple colors like something took a hit in it.

"la la land" taking home six of the 14 oscars for which it was nominated. including best actress. >> i realize a moment like this is a huge confluence of luck and opportunity. >> reporter: casey affleck. >> reporter: best actor going to the tar star of "manchester by the sea". i'm dumbfounded i'm included. >> reporter: and finally the real winner, best picture. and even though it turns out "la la land" did not win the big award, it was still a huge night for the master mind of this film, damien chazelle. he's now the youngest person to

win an oscar for best director. >> they have to be proud of themselves despite the mixup. the big question this morning, how did that wrong card end up in warren beatty's hand. do we have any idea what happened? >> there's still no official explanation. people are piecing together when they print out the winner, they put it on two different cards. one goes on each end of the stage. the card they brought up to announce for best actress, emma stone, after they read the name, they handed it to emma stone, and she said she had that card still in her hand when best picture was announced. well somehow that second card was handed to warren beatty instead of the best picture card. so people who do all the tabulation are in charge of keeping things straight definitely have a lot of explaining to do. >> yes, they do. >> yeah. marci, the big question

president trump is again taking heat from members of a gold star family member. the angry comments came as a defense department announced an investigation into last month's raid in yemen. >> hours before the president hosted the governor's ball last night at the white house, the administration responded to the father of the navy s.e.a.l. killed in the operation. >> reporter: the father of the only navy s.e.a.l. to die in the raid is calling on the president to investigate ryan owen's death. the government owes my son an investigation. william owens told the miami herald with a direct message to the president. don't hide behind my son's death to prevent an investigation. we watched the president and his daughter travel to dover air force base. >> we just returned from an amazing visit with a great, great family at dover. it was something very sad, very beautiful. ryan, a great man. >> reporter: but william owens told military officials he didn't want to meet mr. trump adding, i didn't want to make a scene about it. but my conscious couldn't let me talk to him. he also questioned the raid.

why at this time did there have to be this stupid mission when it wasn't barely a week into his administration. >> it was highly successful. it achieved the purpose. >> reporter: saying valuable intelligence was found on computers and phones, but along with owen's life, an aircraft was lost. senator john mccain questioned the characterization. >> when you lose a $75 million airport, and more importantly, an american life is lost and wounded, i don't believe that you can call it a success. >> reporter: george stephanopoulos asked if there will be an investigation. >> the son is a true american hero. >> reporter: does the president want an investigation. >> i haven't spoken with him directly. i would manage he would be supportive of that. >> william owens said he didn't vote for president trump, and he was troubled by his treatment of the kahne.

bonnie tyler the sun went out for 82 cue bonnie tyler. the sun went out for 83 seconds for a number of people. the moon passed between the earth and the sun. the ring of fire solar eclipse was seen in south america and africa and also streamed live on the internet. it wasn't a total eclipse. a sliver of the sun was visible. >> the search continues for a shooter who killed an 8-year-old girl in a road rage case in texas. she died early saturday morning. her mother's car hit one of two vehicles speeding on a houston road. that's when a woman who was in one of the cars opened fire hitting the little girl. the mother was not injured. also from houston, check out this incredible video.

1,400 bottles of champagne on ice. you do the math. definitely quite a celebration this morning. >> reporter: sounds like they had enough champagne for you. >> i know. >> and, parsy, what's being said backstage about this whole mix-up? >> on stage warren beatty said he had the card for the winner and that it said emma stone "la la land." that's why he looked a little confused at first, but then emma stone backstage said she took the card with her name on it after she won, so it's not that it was accidentally left behind. now this just goes to price waterhouse cooper. they're the ones who tabulated the results. still watting for an explanation from them. >> they have a lot of explaining to do. and no doubt all the producers from "la la land," they're the ones drinking the bottles of champagne. >> i'll tell you who's drinking right now, steve harvey. >> marci, thank you.

now let's go back deeper backstage for more details on the best picture mistake. >> abc's jason nathanson was backstage all night. jason, when did you know something was wrong? >> reporter: i stopped paying attention about a minute or so into the speech. i was trying to get my stuff ready. "la la land" won. that's the story. it won seven. i'm writing my pieces. and then all of a sudden everybody pauses and it's chaos, and he says, no, it's actually "moonlight." we all thought it was a joke. that's a joke jimmy kimmel would pull. that's crazy. it was about then we knew something was wrong, and we're getting some more explanations on what's actually happening. >> jason, give me a sense.

backstage, were there audible gasps? what are you hearing among the people there in the production? what was it like? >> reporter: audible gasps. that's definitely a way to describe it. it was chaotic. never seen anything like that. we'll never see anything like it again. we were dumbfounded this would happen at the oscars, the premier event. this is the big night in hollywood. and that's what happened. what we're understanding is there's two cards for every winner. on either side of the stage, there's a card for best actress for emma stone, left and right. so she had hers. she was holding hers, but if you look at a frozen screen grab of the card he's holding, it says best actress. that's the category they were reading. that's what happened. and that's where the problem was. >> oh. so that's -- so they grabbed the spare card and saw a "la la land." faye was like get it over with, "la la land."

>> exactly. >> now the big question will be how did that envelope end up in warren beatty's hand. i'm sure that's what everyone is trying to figure out. what did you make of the rest of the nights played out? "la la land" did not win best picture, but it did well across the board. >> it did, and it was the big winner on the night with six awards. the awards up to the end were predictable. when we saw "la la land" won, that's what we expected. but for "moonlight" to win, that was a surprise. although momentum has been growing for the film, but it was a big shock that not only what happened with the screw-up, but that "moonlight" beat "la la land" in the end. >> and the crews could be the have been more gracious in an awkward moment and seemed happy for the team behind "moonlight." >> that's what barry jenkins said. he said the "la la land" crew was gracious to him. >> that said, who do you think is drinking more alcohol tonight? the "la la land" people who lost or the "moonlight" people

celebrating? >> i think it's both. they're all going to be partying together at the governor's ball. they're having good fun. eventually they'll be able to laugh, but for you. damien chazelle won best director, the youngest ever to win. he did not come back backstage and talk to us. probably because he knew what he'd be asked about. >> yeah. all right. basically, they were carding him. that's why he didn't come backstage. >> jason nathan for us live if hollywood. jason, thank you so much. >> good night. >> in addition to all the awards, there's plenty of fun last night. after justin timberlake performance his oscar nominated song "can't stop the feeling," kimmel joked that it was such a great performance that if nsync was watching, they would probably let him back in the band. >> that actually goes an angry stare from justin timberlake.

earlier he photobombed emma stone during an interview. she never knew he was there until the moment was over. it was too late. >> it was great. one of the other moments people are talking about during the show was jimmy kimmel had a tour bus where they surprised them and they ended up in the audience there at the dolby theater. this is keith urban's perspective of that same moment. he was videotaping it or shooting it on his phone. so while the cameras for the oscars are taping moment, keith urban, sitting next to his wife, of course, nicole kidman, is shooting this and just cracking up. >> and jimmy kimmel is telling this guy gary, you don't have to shoot this on your phone. we're on television. meanwhile, half the celebrities had their phones out trying to
