>> even though it's been 47 years, i still miss him and it's hard. >> two homes are now red tagged. neighbors are dropping off supplies and donations for the victims of the fire. a complete investigation into the cause of the crash could take up to a year and a half. well, what do you think of this. marin is looking at letting buses use freeway shoulders during the commute. >> it's a controversial idea that's been done in other parts of the country. here's nougs reporter amy hollyfield to explain how this would work. good morning, amy. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. what do you think? they're thinking outside the box up here in marin county. it's an interesting idea. it's gaining some traction. here's how it would work. the buses would be allowed to ride in the shoulders on highway 101. the problem on congested 101 for the buses is they are in the far car pool lane and then they have to cut across lanes of traffic to get to the bus stops on the other side. well, this complicates things for all the cars in its way. according to the marin

"independent journal," the idea is to allow the buses to slowly drive on the shoulders, maybe 35 miles per hour, or at the most, 15 miles per hour faster than the traffic in the next lane. highway 101, though, only has shoulders in marin county north of the civic center so the bussed wouldn't get a smooth right all the way into the city, but officials think this would help make the bus trips quicker and could possibly attract riders. no word on when this pilot program would get started, but it's an interesting idea for you to ponder as you commute this morning. we are at the novato park and ride parking lot this morning to hear opinions of bus riders so check back in with us to hear from them. reporting live in novato, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. an interesting idea. thank you, amy. passengers aboard this british air waze flight have quite a story to tell this morning. sky7 showing their plane landing after a four-hour delay. the reason for that? a mouse. here's abc7 news reporter lilian kim with the details.

>> reporter: british airways passengers arrived at sfo exhausted, their london to san francisco flight delayed more than four hours because of a mouse on board. it was spotted when everyone was buckled up, ready to go. >> somebody saw a mouse that scurried under one of the doors. they kept us on the plane for about 15 minutes, told us that we had to get off the plane because they couldn't fly with the mouse. >> reporter: passengers went back to the terminal. despite the delay, many kept their sense of humor intact. >> it's clear the mouse can't enter u.s. air space without a passport but you know, in general, i think it makes sense because i wouldn't really want to eat food on a plane that had a mouse. >> reporter: it's unclear how the mouse got on the plane, but the rule is if there is one on board, the aircraft is forbidden to fly. otherwise, the consequences can be dangerous. >> they have the ability to gnaw through a lot of things, including wiring, and this is one of the last things you want is something gnawing through the wiring on a jet liner, whether it's in flight or not. >> reporter: when flight 285 was finally ready to go, british

77% say they support having them in their neighborhoods. new details, a jury has awarded $4 million to the family of a woman who died after being hit by a golden gate transit bus. 51-year-old laurie helmer was struck by the bus in november 2014 while she was jogging. the bus was making a left-hand turn on a green light when it hit her. the jury decided the driver was negligent after attorneys revealed that he was going faster than the transit agency's policies allow. flood control cost california $50 billion. that's according to the state's natural resources secretary. during a committee hearing in washington, senator kamala harris discussed california's flood risk. she's trying to secure federal funding to help upgrade aging infrastructure that includes the nearly half of california's 1400 dams that are designated as, quote, high hazard potential by state officials. all right, let's quickly head up to the north bay because

a north bay woman is under arrest after police say she pointed this shotgun at workers who were cutting down a tree in santa rosa. investigators say 62-year-old april hamilton threatened to shoot the workers who were hired by her neighbor to remove a diseased tree. officers took hamilton into custody in her backyard and found an unloaded rifle. she faces charges of making terrorist threats and brandishing a firearm. the golden gate bridge district says a suicide barrier on the bridge should be complete bid january of 2021. the bay area is expected to cost more than $200 million. the project involves installing the equivalent of seven football fields of netting along the 1.7 mile bridge. that net will be made of stainless steel, 20 feet below and 20 feet out from the side of

the span. in today's "gma" first look, a desperate search for a killer in tennessee after someone stab add young nurse to death in her apartment. in this morning's "gma" first look, police on the hunt for the man seen in this surveillance video who they suspect fatally stabbed 23-year-old tiffany ferguson in her nashville apartment early tuesday. the video shows the hooded figure walking near the wedgewood park apartment complex around 5:20 a.m. according to police, the suspect attempted to break into several cars before checking for unlocked apartment doors. eventually making his way into ferguson's home, raiding it for valuables, and stabbing her to death. the intensive care nurse had been out with friends the night before. her sister telling abc news she'd been having problems with the lock on her door. ferguson's roommate waking up to her screens, rushing to her room, where she found her friend suffering from multiple stab wounds. and coming up at 7:00 a.m.,

former fbi special agent brad garrett weighs in live. abc news nashville. take a look at this billboard. a teacher in philadelphia is using it to shame city officials and it reads, welcome to philadelphia where we don't value our public school children. the billboard also says it's been more than five years since they've received a raise. the school district says they're working with the local teacher's union to create a fiscally responsible contract. the teacher crowd funded more than $5,000 to pay for this. the oakland unified school district is holding an immigrant resource fair. it will be followed by a legal workshop with with immigration lawyers. it will be held at the melrose leadership academy cafeteria. it starts at 3:00. this is an incredible story. a group of roman catholic monks are trying to raise money to repair this because they're trapped. they live at a retreat that is cut off from civilization

san leandro and then this happened. one of their vehicles slammed head on into a toyota prius. a couple of totally innocent people, they're in their 70s, they suffered serious injuries in that collision. that couple is still recovering from the crash. a s.w.a.t. team served a search warrant at jones' apartment in san leandro and they found this. an ak-47, three semiautomatic piece tolls, drug making equipment and $250,000 in cash. palo alto police hope that this photo will lead them to the man a woman says exposed himself to her. this happened monday morning on park avenue and el camino real. the woman snapped this photo of the man walking away after it happened. police say he's hispanic in his early 20s about 5'7" with a pencil thin mustache. 5 pl$5 million, that's how a billionaire donated to san jose. we're learning more about him.

valley is back open this morning following a mudslide that closed it for hours. crews closed the road in san ramon yesterday afternoon. crews removed the last of the debris around 9:00 last night. officials say the slide is another reminder that even when it's raining, we can still feel the impact of our incredibly wet winter. public works officials in oakland say it will take until may to finish the major repairs on this giant sinkhole t. hole opened up on east 27th street last month and nearly swallowed that bmw. winter storms are blamed for crumbling pavement, which led to a broken pipe beneath the surface. i disrupted gas, sewer, and storm drien lines. east 27th will be closed until the work is done. temperatures a degree or two warmer, not really noticeable this morning. look at union city, 39, castro valley, 38, everybody else until the low to mid 40z along the east bay from orinda at 40, same thing at fremont, to oakland,

san leandro, and richmond 44 to alameda, the warm spot at 4 and across the bay, we've got low 40s. 34 in pleasanton, one of our cool spots, 38 in brentwood, 39 in napa, santa rosa and novato at about 47. look at these temperatures today. even the coast gets in on the mid 60s as a light offshore breeze will bring the warmth to your neighborhoods and it's going to be relatively calm today with the 63 to 67 degree temperatures. look at the golden gate bridge. you can see right there, see the flag blowing a little bit offshore. that makes all the difference in the world. milder today if you're taking mass transit. if you're commuting, the ground is going to be dry all day and that goes for if you're going to be out and about jogging, running, yard work, just watch out for the pollen, there's moderate amounts of tree pollen out there. here's a look at 101 and 880 in san jose. there you go. moderate ash cedar, juniper and pine. quick look at tonight's temperatures. napa, livermore, morgan hill, palo alto, and the rest of us about 40 to 46 degrees.

sat down with anne kirkpatrick to ask her about the future of the department. she told us despite gains made in recent years, oakland could be safer. the chief acknowledges the police force's history of controversy from the recent sex scandal to racial profiling. she told us it's important to take ownership of the good and the bad. >> we own it. we are going to address the fact that -- where mistakes occurred. we're going to acknowledge it. we're going to talk about how we correct it for the future. and we're going to meet people face to face. >> the new chief says her approach is to speak with and listen to all the stakeholders in the city. and over in san francisco, the police chief, william scott, is launching a new effort to bring tasers or stun guns to the department. according to "the examiner," he told the commission he wants to develop a plan to use the weapons despite public opposition. scott says officers need the weapons now more than ever, especially since the commission banned the coratid restraint. the commission is against tasers and members say officers have

developing news in the east bay, police have called off the search for the person who shot at an off duty officer. that off duty officer was not hurt. it happened on interstate 880 in oakland. officers searched a stretch of the highway on foot. they were looking for shell casings. the chp tells us 880 was shut down north of high street for about an hour. oakland police spotted the suspect's vehicle shortly after the gunfire. they chased it and lost track of the vehicle. then they found it abandoned near the area of brook detail dale and 56th streets in oakland. they did not find the person. yahoo ceo is giving her annual bonus to the company's employees and of course this follows the two massive data breaches under her watch. the breaches compromised the information of more than 1 million yahoo users. the biggest one happened in 2014. it only recently was revealed, though. a yahoo investigation determined

she and other managers reacted much too slowly. the breaches lowered yahoo's sale price to verizon by 350 merchandise. are you priced out of san francisco and silicon valley? well, you're certainly not alone. and now the city of concord is trying to cash in on businesses that can't afford to open in some of the more expensive parts of the bay area. so concord has launched a $160,000 pr and advertising campaign aimed at rebranding the city. >> we're seeing a lot of interest there through our website, a lot more hits to our website, a lot more interest in the brokerage community, calling, asking us questions. >> check out these posters, ads at the embarcadero b.a.r.t. station trying to lure entrepreneurs to concord. officials say it's part of an aggressive sell of the city's abundant square footage. major excavation work is understood way on san francisco's first bus rapid transit system. abc7 news was on van ness avenue where heavy digging began to move the median yesterday.

the prep work began last november and you remember van ness was narrowed down from three lanes to two in each direction. the project will convert one of the lanes into bus only lanes in both directions from mission to lombard and that's expected to improve muni travel time on van ness by 32%. construction will take about three years. a historic dry dock in san francisco is on the verge of closing. we now know it will stay open for least another 90 days. at stake are 240 jobs and a vital ship repair yard at pier 70. puglia engineering took over the dock operation in january the company threatened to close it after it discovered millions of dollars in needed repairs. it has agreed to keep the shipyard open while it develops a plan to pay for dock repairs and dredging that's needed at that site. okay, marine biologists have a warning about seals and i have a warning if you're just waking up. this is going to be quite the alarm. >> every time. >> i told you. >> abc7 news was in sausalito

where veterinarians are caring for several seal pups. birthing season for many seals runs now through the end of the month, meaning that people are going to see more waeb babies on beaches, many times alone. people often think the pups are abandoned by experts say you should stay away. >> they'll leave the pup to forage and then they'll see their people on the beach with their pup and they won't want to come back so if you see a pup by itself, give that animal some space, give it at least 50 feet if not 100 feet. >> another reason not to pick up baby seals, it's actually a crime. so, watch and stay away. >> yeah. all the show snow that's fallen in the sr is good for more than just the ski resorts. the survey south of lake tahoe measured 43.4 inches of snow yesterday. that is a near record amount of snow and 15 inches more than last month. this means when the snow melts over the spring and summer, our reservoirs should remain full. and we wanted that but that is good news confirmation and

off but that's about it. up in the north bay, it's going to rain for the better part of saturday. that's it. for the rest of us, we have to wait until the evening hours and notice how quickly it is, the fact that it takes just a couple hours to move through means we won't see much flooding. in fact, we're going to see the bulk of the storm over by sunday morning and then what we're going to deal with sunday afternoon are scattered light showers. it's going to be breezy both days and much cooler, temperatures back in the mid 50s by sunday. we'll start to reach 60 monday and then most of us in the 60s by next wednesday. but again, today, warmest day this week near 70 in some neighborhoods. alexis is here with some more good news. certainly am. we just had our sig alert canceled for this crash in the richmond area. all lanes back open just a couple moments ago and that was from the crash near pinole valley road. center lane down for about 20 minutes there and little over a four-mile backup. so certainly well beyond highway 4 that's going to take a little while to shake out. we have a rollover crash in the south bay.

this is on eastbound state route 237 just before you get to north 1st street. sounds like it landed on its wheels, it's on the shoulder. noticing a pretty big backup on this westbound side so i think we have some onlooker delay. we definitely have a backup through the maze this morning. bay bridge metering lights on about 20 minutes ago. little bit more than that. they flipped on at 5:26 this morning. we'll check on drive times coming up next. four new safeway stores are open in the bay area this morning but they aren't like the company's regular they have gourmet meats, a salad bar, hot food section and other specialty items including chocolate coffee flavored adult brownies. >> this is a family owned store, even though i know that andronica's was not a family owned store but i do miss a local family owned store. >> there are two safeway community markets in berkeley, whether you know los altos, safeway is keeping most of the

a word of warning for you this morning. "7 on your side's" michael finney is alerting us to a new scam that could impact drivers everywhere. it's a red light ticket scam. e-mails are going out on the east coast telling drivers they've been caught on camera running a red light and that e-mailt is supposed to be a red light photo. but when you actually click on it, you're hit with malware instead. there's no evidence the scam has made it here yet. michael's take away from all of us, police don't send tickets by e-mail. if you are a fan of coachella, you might want to change your password this morning. hackers stole the personal information of thousands who logged on to coachella's site to activate wristbands. they got names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and birth dates. fortunately, they didn't get any credit card or ticket information. but you are warned to watch for scam e-mails pretending to be from the festival. sun's coming up about a minute earlier today and you can see that transition taking place on mount tamalpais.

let's talk about temperatures. they peak today about 1 to 3 degrees above average. from 63 in san francisco to san jose's 67 degrees. the past 12 months have been the second wettest in a 12-month period during the 122 years of california weather reporting. that's a pretty impressive run. let's talk about san jose. it is march 2. we start off with a high of 64, a low of 46, we end up around 69 and 48 so nice warming there. coldest, 15 degrees, that was way back, i think, in the 1800s. it's our fourth wettest month, 2.5 inches of rain. we've had almost 7 inches on the high side. full moon's coming at you on the 12th. we'll take a look at your day planner forecast for this read across america. maybe your kids know about that. maybe they're going to do it today. we'll see. here's a look at our commute with alexis. good morning. and i want to take you back to san jose. i have a correction to make on this crash on state route 237.

chp said it was on the eastbound side but the incident is actually on the westbound side so that makes a lot more sense and it's not an overturned vehicle. it's just a vehicle that went off the roadway into the ditch so fire department is there. they're blocking the right lane and you are jammed solid there from 880 so hopefully they're going to get that cleared very quickly and we can get that lane back open. in recovery mode now, westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze, up to 24 minutes there. westbound 80, bay bridge commute, 18 minutes, southbound 101, san francisco to sfo, you are in the green at 10 minutes. live look outside at the south bay and nice and dry and pretty smooth. we'll take a look at the central valley coming up at 6:00. take a look at this benicia police officer who's standing there like she's just directing normal traffic, like this is no big deal. she stopped the cars along a four-lane road yesterday to help this herd of goats get to the other side. and look how many goats we're talking about here. this is a giant group. the goats just keep streaming
