"the washington post" first reporting sessions met with russian ambassador sergey kislyak twice in the final months of the campaign first at

a gathering in cleveland for the republican national convention and again, if on september 8th in sessions' senate office. >> we need to make america great again. >> reporter: sessions was one of trump's top advisers in the campaign, the first sitting senator to endorse him. his september meeting with the russian ambassador came in the middle of the controversy over the election hacking, and just one day after candidate trump said this about russian president vladimir putin. >> if he says great things about me, i'm going to say great things about him. he's been a leader. far more than our president has been a leader. >> reporter: so did that moment come up in sessions' meeting with the russian ambassador? sessions says he does not remember what, if anything, they discussed about the campaign. >> i don't recall, but most of these ambassadors are pretty gossipy, and they like to -- this was in the campaign season. but i don't recall any specific political discussions. >> reporter: sessions said he met with kislyak purely in his capacity as a member of the senate armed services committee and that the meeting during the gop convention was a brief encounter with other ambassadors present. >> let me be clear, i never had meetings with russian operatives or russian intermediaries about the trump campaign. and the idea that i was part of

senior adviser jared kushner met with ambassador kislyak in december along with now ousted national security adviser michael flynn. the meeting taking place at trump tower around the same time the obama administration was deciding how to punish russia for interfering in the election. we're told they discussed the relationship between the two the countries. meanwhile, newly released video shows russian fighter jets buzzing a u.s. navy destroyer in the black sea last month. knave officials say the jets flew at unusually high speeds and very low altitudes coming dangerously close to the "uss porter. the pentagon blasting the flybys calling them unsafe and unprofessional. russia's defense ministries denies any incidents involving the porter. >> the vice president responding to news he used a personal e-mail account for sensitive matters as indiana's governor. information about the account which was also hacked first came out in june in the indianapolis star. pence was critical of former secretary of state hillary clinton's private e-mail server

during the campaign. in a statement, the vice president's spokesperson called any comparisons absurd since pence wasn't dealing with federally classified information. and kentucky's republican senator rand paul stormed the house of representatives demanding to see a draft of the obamacare replacement bill. rand marched through the halls looking for what he calls the secret room for the secret bill. he even brought along his own copy machine. he knocked on a lot of doors and asked to see the bill. here's part of that conversation. >> i'm part of the legislature. shouldn't i be part of the process? i was elected to represent my state and i'm not allowed to read the working product so i can comment on it? >> you figure it's just a bill sitting there on capitol hill. >> i was thinking of that same song. the old school sesame street or some type of kids song. a bill, a bill. >> schoolhouse rock. >> on capitol hill. >> rand's request was denied by the way. he later complained about house

we're back now with a call for justice from the parents of an 18-year-old man who is dead. >> yes, newly released dashcam video shows police pulling the teenager out of his car, tasing him and then kneeling on his neck. abc's steve osunsami has the latest. [ sirens ] >> reporter: the parents of the georgia teenager behind the wheel of this pickup truck don't deny tonight that their son was on drugs and probably shouldn't have been racing away from police in the middle of the

night. but they believe what happens next after he is pulled out of the truck is nothing but murder. >> i think they should be punished. >> i have never seen a cop car that says on the side, to hunt down and kill. it says to protect and serve. >> reporter: the police dashcam video is from 2015. 18-year-old nicolas dyksma is still feeling the shock from their stun guns. and now the deputies are on top of him. the part that's most difficult to watch is when one of the deputies keeps leaning his knee onto their son's neck and turns him around and does it again. a state autopsy says it's one of the reasons he later died. from compression of the neck and torso. >> he still up? >> turn him on his side. >> hey. nicholas, wake up. >> he hadn't committed a crime, and they killed him. i got a problem with that. >> reporter: the family is now suing saying the police violated their son's civil rights and waited too long to give cpr. authorities aren't commenting

senator rand paul leading an the charge. >> i think there's a bill in there. >> i asked for a copy of the bill and i'm being told i can't have a copy of the bill. i'm also being told by others i should sit back and take it, and i don't think that's the way the american process should work. i think it should be done in the open. i'm part of the legislature. shouldn't i be part of the process? >> reporter: it is common for complex legislation to be worked on in private but not common for a gop congressman to be leading the charge to bring the gop bill out in the public before it's fully written. kendis and adrienne, the house committee is working on this markup are expected to introduce it next week and we should get a good look at that two days before. >> so just to continue on that theme, apparently the bill says while i'm sitting in committee, but i know i'll be a law some day. it says it's a long, long wait. >> it's a long, long wait. they have to go through committee at least and then it has to get voted out of committee and introduced to the full house and the senate has to do their side and they have to meet up.

we have a long time before this happen. >> a long time all schooled by schoolhouse rock. >> they need to know that. >> thank you for the report, too. we appreciate it. president trump is defending attorney general jeff sessions after he removed himself from any investigations into russian interference in the presidential race. >> sessions made the announcement following revelations he had spoken twice to the russian ambassador to the u.s. before the election but failed to disclose it during his confirmation hearing. and he acknowledged that he should have answered differently. >> in retrospect, i should have slowed down and said but i did meet one russian official a couple of times. that would be the ambassador. >> overnight, sessions telling fox news that recusal is not an admission of any wrongdoing. insisting he was forthright and truthful, but democrats like house minority leader nancy pelosi say sessions is unfit to be attorney general and they're calling on him to step down. >> the fact that the attorney

general, the top cop in our country, lied under oath to the american people is grounds for him to resign. >> and the senate minority leader chuck schumer also calling for sessions to resign saying it's important to insure the integrity of the investigation by appointing a special prosecutor with no ties to either party. >> important to note too that the democrats have been really not interested in having him in the office in the first place, if you recall. they were trying to block his confirmation. meanwhile, the white house has confirmed the president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner met with the same russian envoy in december along with the incoming national security adviser michael flynn. abc's cecilia vega has more on the ambassador, sessions and the president's reaction. >> reporter: during a tour of a new aircraft carrier in virginia president trump offering his full support for his embattled attorney general. >> mr. president, do you still

have confidence in the attorney general? >> total. >> reporter: still, the president saying he had no idea about jeff sessions' conversations with the russian ambassador. >> when were you aware that he spoke to the russian ambassador? >> i wasn't aware at all. >> reporter: in fact, white house sources tell abc news, administration officials first learned about that contact overnight, when the story broke in "the washington post." what should have been a victory lap after the president's speech to congress was overshadowed by yet another round of questions about his team's contacts with russia during the campaign. for months, the president insisting there were no contacts. to me in january -- >> did you or anyone in your campaign have any contact with russia leading up to or during the campaign? nothing at all? >> reporter: not at all, he said. and to abc's jon karl two weeks ago. >> can you say definitively that nobody on your campaign had any contacts with the russians during the campaign? and on the leaks, is it fake news or are these real leaks?

reevell, is it even being covered in the media there? >> reporter: one of the odd things throughout the allegations around trump and russia has been the surreally muted reaction. the kremlin, of course, has denied again there was any interference from russia in the u.s. elections. 80s calling the uproar and jeff sessions as a new type of red scare. in state media and among ordinary russians they don't really talk about the story. they say they either don't believe it or if they do, they actually say they don't see the big deal because the u.s. interferes in russian politics all the time. and this is a taste of america's own medicine. >> is it even on the newscast or newspapers? >> reporter: you know, obviously, it appears in newspapers but you know, we cannot guarantee that it will be in the morning news bulletins even. it might be, but would it be the top story? you know, very far from certain. >> okay. i got you on that. what do we know about this russian ambassador. >> he seems to be at the center of these trump/russian
