about a date that brought him to the white house in the '60s. as a mere pup, i guess, when he went to the white house. who knows. >> wee lad. >> just a wee lad as we do say good morning to you, everyone, on this friday. i'm kendis gibson. >> and i'm adrienne bankert in for diane. we begin with attorney general jeff sessions on the defense now after recusing himself agreeing to step away from any investigations into russia's meddling in the election. >> now, sessions says he did nothing wrong by meeting with the russian ambassador and neglecting to reveal it to lawmakers while under oath. now, new overnight president trump standing by sessions calling this a witch-hunt. abc's maggie rulli is following the developments overnight from d.c. maggie, good morning. >> reporter: kendis, adrienne, good morning. well, the white house started off the week on a high note. we had president trump's big speech before congress just on tuesday night, but now the white house is wrapping up the week

getting peppered with questions about the relationship with russia. the country's top law enforcer now off the case. >> i have recused myself. >> reporter: attorney general jeff sessions is stepping back from any investigation into russian interference in the election. the move comes after the justice department confirmed that sessions met with the russian ambassador twice during the campaign. but sessions says he did nothing wrong. >> recusal is not an admission of any wrongdoing. >> reporter: telling fox news his meetings were a perfectly reasonable thing to do as senator. but the big issue for many lawmakers, the fact that sessions did not disclose these meetings when questioned under oath by congress in january. >> i didn't have -- did not have communications with the russians, and i'm unable to comment on it. >> reporter: for democrats on capitol hill, that's enough to warrant his resignation. >> the attorney general, the top cop in our country, lied under oath to the american people is grounds for him to resign. >> reporter: but even members of his own party say at the very least sessions can no longer

work the case. >> i do think he's going to need to recuse himself at this point. >> reporter: president trump says sessions could have responded more accurately at his confirmation hearings but says he fully supports his attorney general. >> mr. president, do you still have confidence in the attorney general, sir? >> total. >> reporter: the president continues on to say that he had no idea about the meetings but does call the accusations against sessions a political witch-hunt. kendis and adrienne. >> yeah, maggie, nearly 100 lawmakers now calling for sessions to resign. thank you. and there is word of yet another meeting between the trump campaign and that same russian envoy. >> the white house has confirmed that the president's son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner met with the ambassador in december at trump tower along with now ousted national security adviser michael flynn. now we're told they discussed the relationship between the two countries. the navy has released some new video showing russian fighter jets buzzing the "uss porter" in the black sea last month. navy officials say the jets flew

at unusually high speeds and extremely low altitudes and were dangerously close to the destroyer. the pentagon calling the flybys unsafe and unprofessional. russia's defense ministry denies any incidents involving the "porter." vice president mike pence is responding to news that he used a personal e-mail account for sensitive matters as indiana's governor. now, information about the account, which was also hacked, first came out in june in "the indianapolis star." now pence was critical of former secretary of state hillary clinton's private e-mail during the campaign. in a statement the vice president's spokesperson called any comparisons absurd since pence wasn't dealing with federally classified information. a lot of stories out of washington today including this one, the drama over affordable health care taking a bizarre turn in d.c. >> a lot of theatrics. here's a live picture of the capitol building where a pair of lawmakers storm the halls in the basement demanding to see a draft of the new legislation. that scene perhaps worthy of a hollywood script.

abc's serena marshall joins us now with the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and that's right. in a basement room on capitol hill republican lawmakers working up a repeal and replacement to the affordable care act or obamacare. but what they didn't expect was a congressional quest to see the bill led by a gop congressman. it's hide-and-seek congress style. >> i'd like a copy of the bill. >> reporter: democrat and republican lawmakers hunting the capitol for the bill that would repeal and replace obamacare or the affordable care act. >> i think there's a bill in there, but i asked, and i'm being told i can't have a copy of the bill. i'm also being told by others that i should sit back and take it, and i don't think that's the way the american process should work. i think it should be done in the open. >> reporter: republicans meeting and working on the bill thursday in a basement house office building. >> we were told that the bill would be here. >> reporter: when the secret room where the markup was happening was finally found congress members and the press allowed inside to find nothing. a writer for "the hill" tweeting

this photo. >> i'm part of the legislature. shouldn't i be part of the process? >> reporter: the whole escapade reminiscent of 2009 when democrats were accused by republicans of shrouding their bill in secrecy. >> when obamacare was passed in 2010, 2009/2010, nancy pelosi said, you'll know what's in it after we pass it. the republican party shouldn't act in the same way. >> reporter: the chairman of one of the committees saying this is all part of the regular process for writing a bill. it is common for complex legislation to be worked on in private. the full text available two days before the public markup. that's expected to happen next week in the house, and speaker ryan says they expect the legislation to pass out of committee by the end of the month. kendis, adrienne. >> serena, never a dull day there. thank you. >> that's the truth. breaking news in the death of north korea leader kim jong-un's brother. police in malaysia have issued an arrest warrant for an airline employee in connection with the killing of kim jong-nam. he was murdered last month before boarding a flight at kuala lumpur international airport. two women have been charged

so, activists are hoping to halt the deportation of a father picked up by immigration officials while dropping his kids off at school. the emotional scene was caught on camera by his 13-year-old daughter in los angeles. the family says the father of four has been in this country for 20 years, and now he's facing possible deportation. >> it's really hard, what we're going through, never thought that we would actually go through something like this. it's terrible to feel and see your family being broken apart. >> now, friends say he has an old conviction for dui and one other minor infraction from the past. now, these cases have received national attention since president trump pledged to crack down on illegal immigration, but they were happening quite a bit during president obama's -- >> yes, during his time in office. shares of construction equipment

maker caterpillar dropping more than $4 a share following raids on several of its offices. the company and authorities said the raids were linked to an investigation of cat's offshore tax practices. the irs notified cat it owes $2 billion in taxes for several years because of its profits from its subsidiary in switzerland. the parent company of dunkin' donuts and baskin-robbins is looking to go au naturel. dunkin brands group says it will remove artificial colors from its products by next year. the exception would be certain ingredients produced by other companies, and other chains such as subway and panera promised to remove artificial colors from their foods in response to customer demand. and amazon says a typo caused tuesday's massive web outage. just one incorrectly typed command led to a five-hour lack of energy for nearly 150,000 sites on the internet.

with the murder of two young girls in rural indiana. 13-year-old abby williams and 14-year-old libby german were found murdered two weeks ago after they vanished during a hike. former indianapolis colts player pat mcphee and the team's owner donated enough money to push the reward to $200,000. well, we're just learning some new details of a deadly multistate crime spree. the suspect is this man right here, 28-year-old alex deaton. police say he abducted two teenagers in new mexico on tuesday forcing them into the trunk of their borrowed car and when the couple managed to escape, deaton allegedly shot one of them and recaptured his girlfriend sara. police just released this terrifying 911 call. >> i don't know if he's coming back down. i doejts know. i know he's shooting and killing terrorizing. >> that was not the case. sara was able to escape again. deaton turned up in kansas where he allegedly shot a gas

station clerk, stole another car and was eventually arrested. deaton is also accused of killing two other people in mississippi last week. >> wow. a new warning now about the dramatic rise of hearing loss. researchers at john hopkins university say the number of american adults losing some form of hearing is likely to nearly double over the next four decades. they found that upwards of 44 million adults 20 and older will suffer hearing loss by the year 2020. wow, that figure jumps to more than 73 million by 2060. they say the reason for that, the aging american population. it might also have something to do with us listening to music really loud in our ears. >> there's that. >> yeah. >> wish i heard that story. okay, so it's time for some hoops. >> wish you heard it. let's get highlights. we can hear you loud and clear, espn. >> good morning. it's "sportscenter" from los angeles. stan verrett, neil everett here. it's been a while since the golden state warriors lost back-to-back games. >> 146 games or something like that. look at splish and splash.

that b breaking news in palo alto, a dump truck crash has part of 101 shut down right now. >> the dump truck driver slammed into the overpass. matt keller is live for us near 101. >> reporter: good morning, reggie and natasha. this is an interesting problem. i want you to check out the divot that is in this overpass here at embarcadero road in palo alto. you can see where that dump truck bed hit the overpass. that dump truck bed ended up on to the highway here in palo alto, causing a lot of problems and we are given word by the chp that they are not going to be opening until about noon. they say that's being optimistic right now. they have a engineer, a structural engineer in sacramento who is making his way

down here to check out the bridge, but the problem is, this person in this dump truck decided that he was going to drop off his load here on 101 at a project they're working on this freeway and started driving. that bed was up, hit the overpass, came off. the dump truck driver was taken to the hospital with a broken nose so now we're just waiting for the structural engineer to get here, get up in a scissor lift, check it out, make sure there's no debris or problems with the safety of this overpass. there's a likelihood that they're going to have to close one of the lanes up on embarcadero road but until they can do that, until this structural engineer gets here, everybody's waiting. they have two lanes closed here on highway 101 so it will obviously be a big traffic issue this morning.poing live in palo matt keller, abc7 news. such an unusual crash. so alexis, how is this affecting traffic this morning? >> you know, there's not a huge delay, so that is the good news if you are just about to head out the door, no backup showing up on our traffic maps yet.

showing you exactly where that happened last night. that was southbound 101 embarcadero road in palo alto. we have the northbound 101 onramp from embarcadero road closed as well and i'm guessing that's just safety precautions for that overpass so a long-term blocking situation here as matt said. they're very optimistic estimate is 12:00 noon today and as we just heard matt say, that structural engineer is coming all the way from sacramento so stay tuned. this is likely what we're going to be talk about all morning here. on top of that, major commuter alert this morning. trains are not moving, stuck at hayward station. delay at fremont in the richmond direction. they said if you can get to bay fair station, that is going to be a better situation. you will be able to be on the move. that is past this switching problem. so i'll stay on top of both of these. right now let's check in with meteorologist mike nicco. let's start
