now san francisco police say they really urgently need your help to track down the violent robber who got away before they strike again. >> melanie woodrow has the story. >> reporter: the robbery began so suddenly you could almost miss it. here, watch again as the suspect pushes a woman to the ground. police say he's armed with a gun and hammer. >> then you could see further in the video that the suspect is waving the gun around and does eventually order the other employees to the ground while he's trying to take items from the display cases. >> reporter: he smashed display cases but got away with nothing, though he certainly left his mark and picture for all to see. san francisco police are sharing these photos of the suspect without his mask on or hood up. >> in san francisco, it's very likely that you're going to be caught on camera, not just from the store you may have committed a crime in but other neighborhood stores or businesses. >> reporter: they're asking anyone who recognizes him to call police. >> the main concern for the department is to find out who this person is, because it's a

very violent attack. >> reporter: the employee he pushed to the ground says she is okay. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. well, in san jose police arrested three teenagers accused in at least 12 armed robberies. police dubbed them the geisha dolls robbery crew because of their disguises. this is surveillance video provided by the police department. two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old have stolen from gas stations and liquor stores. the robberies started in october with the latest one happening in late january. some of the victims were pistol whipped. a somber farewell today to an alameda county sheriff's deputy killed on the job last week. an overflow crowd packed the concord pavilion today to say good-bye to deputy mike foley. he was killed a week ago wednesday when he was hit by a prison bus on a dark rainy morning. deputy foley was remembered for

his loves for the outdoors, his dedication to his job and his family. >> i don't think my dad ever realized how many lives he touched and how many people he -- and how many people he helped feel safe. >> in addition to his son, michael, deputy foley leaves behind his wife, tammy, and daughter, tonya. he was 60 years old. it will be another couple hours before all lanes of southbound 101 in palo alto reopen to traffic. a dump truck slammed into the embarcadero road overpass and got stuck late last night causing major damage and of course it was dangerous for drivers. kate larson is live there with a progress report on how that repair work is going, kate. >> reporter: well, dan, caltrans hopes to open up the one closed lane by 7:00, at least temporarily. that's why they put up that black tarp to keep debris from falling on cars.

they also had to shut down the overpass because it's not safe to drive across. we have reached out to the driver of the dump truck that created this mess as well as the truck company. we're waiting to hear back and find out why this all happened to begin with. caltrans workers spent the day chipping away at the concrete embarcadero road overpass in palo alto. the driver of this donald trump truck decree -- dump truck created the mess, only to get back on highway 101 with his truck bed still raised. he then drove straight into the overpass around 11:00 last night. >> and it seriously damaged that overpass to the point we had to close the two lanes beneath because the damaged section is a little over 45 feet long. >> reporter: caltrans opened up one of the two lane closures this afternoon but the number one lane will remain closed until 7:00 tonight and then later closed again for repairs to a steel girder that needs to be replaced along with the surrounding concrete.

>> we want to make sure we don't have any more loose concrete that could fall and damage a car and injure somebody. >> reporter: the driver of the dump truck went to the hospital with minor injuries. his truck and bed or towed away. sing as hired to work by a private contractor. the chp says their investigation into the crash is ongoing. in the meantime, caltrans says it's unclear if the dump truck driver will be allowed to return to work. in palo alto, kate larson, abc 7 news. all right, here is a look at the traffic situation out there right now. as you can see, with all of the red on southbound 101 at embarcadero road in palo alto, it is still moving very slowly in and around there as drivers try to figure out what to do. last month's storms may have caused a gas leak this morning in san jose. sky 7 was over the area as pg&e crews investigated the rupture. the utility said last month's torrential rain compromised an

underground facility. that and seismic movement likely caused a leak in a four-inch gas main. three homes were evacuated as a precaution. the asphalt cracked and broke up there. this happened near allen rock park. 20 customers remain without gas this evening and repairs are expected to be done later tonight. a bay area state assemblyman says immediate action needs to be taken to fix california's housing crisis. david chiu and fellow democrats addressed this issue today in san francisco. >> california has a million and a half families that lack access to affordable housing, a half a million of whom are children. our state has the highest poverty rate in the country when you include our housing costs. we have six of the 11 most expensive rental markets in the united states. >> he says in order to fix california's housing crisis, lawmakers need to ensure more affordable housing is made available and to find ways to hold cities and counties accountable to enforce housing laws. there is supposed to be a march tomorrow in berkeley in

support of president trump. a march for president trump rally is planned on martin luther king jr. civic center park at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. jonathan bloom is there live. jonathan, lots of questions over whether this will really happen. >> reporter: yeah, most certainly. you know, the memory of the protests that happened last month is still fresh in everybody's minds around here. that was the demonstration that got out of hand when conservative speaker milo yiannopoulos was scheduled to appear. in fact they want this to be a direct response to that an he's working with the city to make sure it stays peaceful. the only problem is the city says they have no applications for a demonstration and they don't think there's anything happening here tomorrow at all. >> regardless of where you're living or regardless of your political affiliation, if you want to defend your liberty and your rights, then march with us on berkeley. >> reporter: a video announced the protest organized by this

man. >> my name is rich black. >> reporter: he's listed on the bay area contract on the website for the march for trump. >> funny enough, i'm not actually a trump supporter. >> reporter: what he says he does support is free speech, a right he believes was violated when a lecture by milo yiannopoulos was cancelled. >> after the milo event and seeing some people i know get attacked and having their rights shut down, i knew something had to happen. >> reporter: the berkeley college republicans yacht january op accomplice to campus. >> we advised him not to go because it might get dangerous. >> people who work downtown remember it well. >> they tore down these fences, busted up all the atms. i think they messed up starbucks too. >> reporter: but the man we spoke to insists it won't happen this time. >> we've been working closely with berkeley pd for the last three weeks. i think they're going to do a great job tomorrow. >> reporter: exempt the city

spokesman told us police have not received an application for a demonstration and haven't issued any permits. he refused our requests to speak about it on camera. the group is planning a counter protest. >> stand up to trump's hate and to make sure that berkeley lives up to its promise of being a sanctuary city. >> reporter: in berkeley, jonathan bloom, abc 7 news. the trump administration is reportedly considering separating families who cross together illegally into the united states. according to reuters, which cites three unnamed sources, part of the reason would be to discourage mothers from migrating with their children. under the policy parents could be kept in custody. children would be kept under protective custody with the department of health and human services. reuters says prolonged detention of children is currently barred under a federal appeals court ruling. today the mexico an government launched legal assistance center at its consulate office in san francisco and san jose.

remember when the bay bridge looked like this? an old and a new one. this was back in 2013. >> four years later, things look a lot different. the old span is all but gone at this point. you can certainly notice the difference when driving on the bay bridge. abc 7 has learned that demolition on the old bay bridge span is ahead of schedule now. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in oakland with what's next on this project. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, guys. a lot of folks are noticing that there are big changes on the horizon. this bridge demolition project on track to be done early, in fact by the end of the year. take a look, these two bridge

segments are the only two, and one about a quarter mile from here, all that remain of 19 bridge pieces which have been demolished over the past four years. all of the steel, all of it, will be recycled, but some folks say they're sad to see this old bridge vanishing away. >> as it kind of just clears away, you have like just a grand expanse. >> reporter: ross from berkeley is taking a little time to enjoy the view. a view which seems to be changing by the week for drivers on the eastern span of the bay bridge. >> every time i come across, there's a new chunk missing. it's slowly disappearing. >> reporter: the old span of the bay bridge is going away, one truss span still visible from the new bridge, but two more span segments out of view set to be demolished, and that will happen fast. >> the end of march, early april we will bring down our last truss span. and it is a very sentimental time for us. >> that beautiful bridge is gone almost completely. >> reporter: others are getting a little misty thinking about

the old steel bridge, constructed back in the 1930s, which started coming down in 2013. >> i grew up here, so it's something i always remember. but i like the new bridge too. >> reporter: here's time lapse video of the process. nothing less than a dramatic feat of engineering, lowering the old truss by crane onto a barge. caltrans says the concrete marine foundations will be demolished this fall, like this implosion which took place last october. fish and wildlife protected by an underwater net to catch the debris. >> with each truss span coming down, there are even more phenomenal vistas to behold. >> reporter: but ross isn't getting sentimental over the old span. >> no, i'm not sorry to see it go, but it was a classic. >> reporter: sky 7 overhead with a preview of what will be left behind. beautiful vistas of oakland and the east bay. a new perspective for the future. in oakland, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a huge airlift took place

today to help communities left isolated by landslides near big sur. mary adams tweeted pictures of a helicopter making several flights. it took fuel, food, pet supplies and even school work to some 450 people living between the damaged pfifer canyon bridge and a mudslide. the storm damage left 58 homes isolated. vehicle access from the south may be restored in ten days. repairing the bridge will take a lot longer. well, if you were planning a trip to yosemite, plan for a longer drive. the quickest route, 120 is closed near crane flat. this facebook post shows the crater that opened up when heavy rain shifted the soil beneath the road. that means motorists must take a detour to the highway 140 entrance that's farther south. a portion of highway 41 is also closed for emergency road reparis. keep in mind that there is a winter storm watch for the

sierra from saturday to sunday afternoon. challenging. and then there's this. they are using dynamite to clear a rock slide that has been blocking the only access road to mt. whitney. crews will stabilize the hill and rebuild the road. the work could delay the may 1st start of hiking season. this is happening along whitney access road at hogbackroad just west of highway 395. the power plant at lake oroville is back up and running this afternoon. it's a major milestone after the erosion damage at the emergency spillway that forced nearly 200,000 people to evacuate last month. the plant was shut down for several days so crews could clear out debris at the base of the dam. the debris could have flooded and damaged that power source. water is now being released from the lake without using the damaged spillway. a long-term solution could be weeks away and a temporary fix may need to be developed for next winter. despite our recent rains,

it's shaping up to be another bleak year for salmon fishermen. state officials have crunched the numbers and they say there are less than 300,000 chinook salmon. sounds like a lot but that's down by almost a third from last year. the decline is because the fish were hatched a couple of years ago during the peak of the drought when ocean conditions were abysmal. the low numbers impact the state's bottom line. salmon fishermen account for almost a billion and a half dollars in spending. compounding the problem, the damaged oroville dam. flows were shut down on monday to assess the situation. the sudden drop in flows downstream stranded thousands of fish in low-lying areas. crews have been combing the river banks to rescue the fish. as of yesterday they saved 1,023. yelp is introducing a few feature for help customers find gender neutral bavt rothrooms.

highest peaks. it will accumulate and thunderstorms are possible, especially on sunday. on our storm impact scale, the storm coming in is a 1. snow level down to 3,000 feet and there's a chance for thunder and hail. this is the type of weekend where you need to grab your heavy winter coats or jackets and make sure you have your umbrella. hour-by-hour forecast, 7:00 a.m., some spotty light showers. not everyone is seeing this rain so it is very spotty in nature initially. 10:00 a.m. you'll see light rain, still scattered in nature. by 3:00 p.m. as the main front starts to come through, light to moderate rain. it will be gusty at times, 20 to 30-mile-an-hour wind gusts. saturday evening you'll notice moderate pockets of rain, 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and then we'll go back to the spotty, scattered showers. snow showers showing up over mt. hamilton at 4:00 a.m. sunday and also the hills up in mendocino and lake counties, so be aware of the fact that this is a cold storm and you really will feel

it on sunday. that's just a reminder that we're not in spring, we're in winter. the hour-by-hour forecast will show snow showers possibly in the hills of sonoma county as well, so keep that in mind and into the santa cruz mountains. it really winds down monday morning so the shower activity will continue not just sunday but into monday. rainfall totals are not going to be high. this is one of those situations where it's very light. totals will be between a quarter to 0.6 of an inch through sunday night. a winter storm warning for the sierra nevada. big-time snow in the mountains. 3 feet over the passes, but because the snow level will drop down pretty low, down to 3,000 feet, you're going to want to carry your chains 8 to 14 inches down to 3,000 feet. gusty winds will make for dangerous travel. winter storm warning 4:00 p.m. tomorrow afternoon until 4:00 p.m. monday. temperatures coming down, not as cold because of the extra cloud cover. then for the afternoon going with showers, breezy conditions. temperatures in the 50s, 60s, a cooler day.

according to outside magazine, the bay area is home to one of the top five deadliest national parks in the country. researchers at the outdoor magazine say 85 people died in the golden gate national recreation area between january of 2006 and last september. the entire national park covers parts of san francisco, marin county and san mateo county. the study found the top cause of death was drowning, followed by car crashes. more drivers in california are pursuing claims against caltrans because of pothole damage. state highways are in bad shape after being hit hard by one of the wettest winters on record. the rain caused tens of thousands of potholes to form, but many drivers are using a

not-so-well known program offered by the state. it reimburses them to damage to their cars when potholes are not fixed in a timely manner. >> i think at last check we had $632 million worth of damage done to state highways so far. we're still assessing that damage. there may be more damage to come as we get out of this storm season. >> drivers can file a claim against caltrans for up to $10,000. claims undergo a rigorous investigation before they're approved. you can file a claim via the caltrans website or by phone. amazon boss jeff bezos is setting his sights very high, all the way to the moon. he's trying to sell nasa and the trump administration on the idea of establishing a settlement on the moon. the amazon ceo jeff bezos also owns a space company called blue origin, is making plans to launch a spacecraft that would shuttle goods and eventually humans to and from the moon beginning as early as july of
