some tenants said their units had no working smoke detectors. cornell bernard has the details. >> it was just fire coming through the walls. >> reporter: robert jones says he narrowly escaped the fire which raged out of control through 16 rooms of the travel inn about 9:30 a.m. jones is confined to a wheelchair. >> no wheelchair accessible. they had to pull me down the stairs. >> my son said the building is on fire. we grabbed what we could and ran out the door. >> reporter: they grabbed third dog then warned other neighbors to get out. >> it was black smoke everywhere. i started banging on everybody's door. >> engulfed so fast. within five minutes, the building was -- it was too late to do anything. >> reporter: the only thing he could save was his backpack which got burned. everyone escaped the smoke and flames but three people were

treated for smoke inhalation. firefighters were able to save this cat. some pets are still missing. >> i don't know where my cats are. >> reporter: where did you last see them? >> before i fell asleep. >> reporter: some tenants claim their room don't have smoke detectors. >> we never was woke up. we don't have extinguishers. the roaches live in them. >> i don't have that information if there were fire alarms or anything at this point. >> reporter: the owner tells us the building was up to code. are there smoke detectors? >> our buildings are up to code. >> reporter: the cause is still unknown. officials believe it started in a first floor room then quickly spread upstairs thanks to a fuel can left on a balcony above. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. a lot of people woke up to incredible weather. more could be on its way. in lafayette, hail bounced off the roof and outdoor furniture. in san francisco, people were

caught off guard by small bits of hail. it lasted just a minute. our camera shows clear skies. that's not the case everywhere in the bay area. let's head to our meteorologist. >> mother nature giving us it all today. we had rain, we had hail, we had snow in our highest peak and still showers out there this evening. live doppler 7 tracking it all. street level, you notice the radar in the past half hour had a couple of claps of thunder near san jose. that pushed into mount hamilton, bringing flakes there as well. we are seeing light rain that moved out of dublin at this hour. into the santa cruz mountains, rain. as you go higher in elevation, snow mixing in. into the north bay, a light shower just about to cross the golden gate bridge around 101. we were out and about capturing the sights today. lee posting this. look at that snow earlier this afternoon. the rest of the evening, we're

going to track scattered showers. i think we will see more widespread action as you get close to 11:00 tonight. mother nature going to try and do this again for us on monday. we will detail what you can expect as you head back to work and school. >> thank you. abc news reporter lillian kim is live in mount diablo where a crowd gathered to check out the storm. >> reporter: the park is now officially closed. but a lot of people came up today. it was crazy busy. people came up to see snow for themselves. no one was allowed to drive up because of the slick road conditions. people had to walk to get up here. park rangers said it snowed overnight and had been hailing off and on. people were so excited to come out that it took a while to get past the pay gates. once they got here, families and friends made the most of it. we saw people sled, have snowball fights and enjoy just a

nice walk through the snow. they say it's not very often they get to experience this. >> i tried a sled from the top parking lot down to the bottom here. you can get a 30-second ride, 20, 30 miles per hour if it's a good day. >> you want to see the snow. >> reporter: how has it been? >> good. i didn't bring gloves. my hands are freezing. it's terrible. >> reporter: i can attest to that. i stepped outside without gloves for a few minutes. big mistake. my fingers felt like they were about to fall off. it's very cold up here and getting colder now that the sun is going down. but a lot of fun. a memorable sunday for folks who made the trip. live at the top of mount diablo, lillian kim, abc 7 news. look at this video we sped up. around 11:00 this morning, starts off as a winter wonder land with snow flying. 15 minutes later, sunny and clear. parts of lake county got a dusting of snow today.

this is video posted by the lake port police department. snow is not unusual for this area. you can track the snowfall and bay area rain with the abc 7 news app. check out live doppler 7 radar any time and first alerts to get breaking weather update s instantly. the rain has not caused any issues for coyote creek. hundreds of volunteers endured the wet weather to help clean up flooded neighborhoods. abc 7 news was in san jose for family flood relief day. they raised money for the victims. this restaurant is giving 25% of their takings to help recovery efforts. >> it has been very positive, finding out they were going to be participating in the relief -- disaster relief fund by sort of dining and enjoying the food. >> thousands of people were forced to evacuate with little notice when coyote creek flooded last month. officials are being criticized for not alerting residents early

enough to the danger. officers chased a suspected dirt bike thief over the bay bridge. it happened late this afternoon. you can see the biker started weaving through traffic with chp on his tail. a short time later, he crashed the bike. officers arrested him. they did not say if he was hurt. in heyward police shot a man after he pointed a gun at them. abc 7 news was there as investigators collected evidence today. the shooting happened around 11:30 last night. police confronted the suspect after they say he shot a 17-year-old girl and another man. the suspect survived. he and the man he is accused of shooting are in the hospital. the teenager is out of the hospital. three officers are on paid leave. berkeley police asked for help finding a missing elderly woman who could be in danger. she was last seen on virginia street just north of the cal campus. she's considered at risk.

"the new york times" reports james comey has asked the justice department to reject president trump's latest social media accusations. president trump said president obama ordered his phones to be wiretapped. comey wants to shut down the claim because it insinuates the fbi broke the law. president obama's top intelligence official also debunked the claim. andrew spencer has more from washington. >> reporter: the director of national intelligence under barack obama told meet the press there was no court ordered surveillance at trump tower. >> if the fbi had asked for surveillance, would that be information you would know? >> yes. >> you would be told this if

there was a court order on something like this? >> yes. something like this, absolutely. >> at this point you can't confirm or deny whether it exists? >> i can deny it. >> there's no order? >> not to my order. >> anything at trump tower? >> no. >> while the tweets questioned the legality, clapper would like to think he would know about it if something happened extrajudicially. sean spicer released a statement saying that reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations are very troubling. there are no credible publically known reports to back up trump's claim. the president has not presented any evidence of them. house minority leader nancy pelosi calls it part of a wrap-up smear. >> make up something and you have the press write about it and then you say everybody is writing about this charge. it's a tool of an authoritarian to have you always be talking about what you want.

. facebook has a new way to fight fake news. when you see a story you think is false, you can report it and have it labeled as disputed. here is one example. a story about president trump's

phone being a source of leaks. that's not true. if you see articles like this, you can tell facebook it's a fake news story. facebook will fact check using the associated press and abc news. if there's an issue, it will be labeled disputed. nasa scientists may have a clever way to help make mars habitable for humans. this week during a workshop on long-term project, a scientist pitched an idea to use a giant magnetic shield that would block the sun's high energy solar particles that stripped away mars' atmosphere. scientists believe mars had surface water and was like earth several billion years ago. as the atmosphere starts to fill again and heat the planet, it would help with human plans to colonize. barn owls helping keep mice out of a restaurant are growing up. let's look at their home. they are perched above the cafe in moss landing.

and low 50s, 10 to 20 degrees below normal. currently 46 in san jose. 48 in san francisco. the mild spot, so to speak, relatively. 50 in oakland at this hour. 48 in napa. the storm impact scale, we're going to use it for sunday. light scattered showers out there. every shower still has the potential to dump hail as they move through. snowflakes falling on some of our highest peaks. future weather, hour by hour, later tonight we may see a lull in the activity. it picks up once again. we're back on air for abc 7 news at 11:00, live dopple 7 tracking showers that will linger into early monday as well. overnight tonight, some on and off showers very close to midnight for most of us. mid to low 40s will be your starting temperatures on your monday. live deoppler 7, all of this cloud cover you see over the pacific ocean, that's more rain that has to work through our neck of the woods the next 24

hours. that's why the storm impact scale still with us on monday. it's a similar setup. we will have the scattered showers and any shower has the chance to dump more hail, maybe thunder and more flakes on our highest peaks. future weather, when we're on air tomorrow morning at 5:00 a.m., likely tracking more showers moving through to start off monday. even more flakes right around mount hamilton. the theme of the day really going to be unsettled weather. through 8:00, isolated showers. not everyone is seeing the rain at the same time. showers are dotting the land sk scape out there. the showers will press north. the call tomorrow, you will have the umbrella with you. won't need it the entire day. showers -- it's another cool day out there. temperatures only topping out in the 50s. we saw one to two feet of snow in sierra. look at the additional snowfall. six to perhaps 12 more inches through monday each.
