a movement taking over the streets of san francisco. this is a live look outside of city hall where you see a rally and march for a day without a woman just getting underway. but lots of people showing up already. thanks for joining us, i'm kristen zse. >> and i'm natasha zouves. and this is one of many scheduled around the bay area today. the rally is open to anyone but they have extended a special invitation to women who are small business owners to show solidarity with others around the country. >> and many are wearing red to show support. you may have also heard some schools around the country had to close because they didn't have enough teachers and staff

as women opted to stay home in protest. >> we checked in with san francisco unified school and a representative tells us they had a typical amount of substitution requests no, no more than usual so schoo in session as planned. >> the international women's day is being observed not just here in the bay area but across the country and around the world. >> jessica castro is here with the round up around the world. >> there are many events going on. in fact, i want to give you a glimpse. this is a live image from new york right now where there is a march through manhattan and actually their in front of the trump international hotel and tower right now. you could see many of them holding up signs, a lot of the marches have turned political. but i do want to show you other images coming in from earlier this morning, also in new york. where several women took to the podium to share stories and that is the case across the world. this is an event that wrapped up just within the last hour or so. this is was in mexico city. hundreds showed up there with flags as well.

this is the scene in washington, d.c. where earlier this morning several schools and businesses actually shut down for the day. and, well, the day getting some star power. actress and mother anneeeeeeeee e spoke about federal leave to moms and dad's, too. she welcomed a baby boy this year. >> the clearer i see the connection between women's power and quality and empowerment and the need to redefine and in some cases de-stigm de-stigm de-sti >> and could you see protesters burning the u.s. flag with the image of donald trump on it saying women should be against u.s. imperialism. as the name implies, the day has been observed for women all over the world. also i have seen just within the

last few minutes or so, some images coming in from eastern europe, including kosovo and bella rue and other places. jessica castro, abc 7 news. >> you showed us the live rally outside of trump tower and president trump tweets i have tremendous respect for women and the many roles they serve that are vital to the fabric of our society and economy. it has been liked 67,000 times but prompted a slew of replies saying he has made many statements contrary to showing respect for women. and now back to the rally underway in san francisco. yep, you could see people crossing the street and arriving at city hall. the show of solidarity for women spreading across the bay area. marchs are scheduled in palo alto, pacifica, union city and uc berkeley. and thousands are expected to gather at a rally in oakland

from 5:00 to 10:00 tonight. >> and a rally in san jose at noon at city hall will run until 2:00. leaders joined together yesterday to pledge support to the movement. leaders say they encourage staffers to take a day off with or without pay, if people do choose to work, they're being asked to wear red. >> this is all over social media. look at what happened last night. the site in new york harbor, the statute all dark except for his torch and crown. many believe this was a precursor to today's event but the lights came back on two hours later and they tied to a power failure tied to repairs that were damaged during hurricane sandy. and if you took part in a rally, we want to know about it. post it on social media using the #abc7now and we might use them on air or online at abc7news.com. and now on to breaking news in san jose. two or three homes are evacuated after a gas line break.

sky 7 live over the scene right now. petty group and east san jose and the line was severed around 10:00 this morning. not clear when the evacuated residents will be allowed back into homes. and more breaking news, a man is charfacing charges after police say he killed his daughter-in-law with a hammer. it happened yesterday morning around 9:15, 9:45, officers found the 29-year-old victim's body in the garage. and police say this man, 63-year-old man confessed to killing his daughter-in-law after he said she was being disrespectful. he has been bookedinto the solano county jail. some homeowners are watching as backyards disappear. there is significant erosion from the series of storms. a viewer sent us these photos. amy hollyfield is live in

pleasant ton with the effort to save these homes. amy. >> reporter: hi, natasha. look at the front of the homes, they are beautiful and you wouldn't know about the instability in the backyard but take a look at the drone video taken from one of the residents. >> there used to be 13 trees here, clueing redwoods and 30 feet of land. it has fallen into the creek in pleasant ton. ginger is worried her pool and then her home could be next to go. >> we don't know what to do. from minute to minute. one second we think we need to pack everything -- >> reporter: the hillside started eroding two weeks ago from all of the rain we've had. three homes on foothill boulevard are affected. the residents say the sounds it makes are terrifying. >> it shakes the house. it -- it's not something you want to hear. we can't sleep at night. >> i have a lot of great

memories here. >> reporter: next door neighbor said her family runs out every morning to check and see if they've lost any more land. even in the sunny and dry weather, she's worried. >> the trees that have fallen, our trees and gingers trees and they are effecting the current and hitting the slope again. >> families never suspected this peaceful spot would create such huge problems for them. >> i'm completed will surprised. if i had ever thought this would happen, we would never have moved here. >> reporter: i talked to the public water district officials and she said this is all private property. even the creek. still, they did send out consultants to see what needs to be done to save the homes and they are going to bring up a board -- at a board meeting next wednesday. and there is question about blame, what could have prevented them and residents wondering if growth upstream caused impact on their slope and the water district said impossible, no, and denies that and calls the

storms acts of god. live in pleasant ton, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you. we have new video this morning showing another landslide closing sir francis drake boulevard in marin county. this is a troubled spot for a few weeks with all of the recent storms. the newest slide happened around 1:00 this morning. and the sheriff's office said there is no estimated time when the road will reopen. service is all back to normal at this hour after major delays for train passenger this is morning. crews were called out overnight for unexpected track repairs between fremont and great america triggering a delay for passengers on ace and capitol corridor trains. passengers on one ace train were delayed up to two hours. the service was restored around 8:45 and passengers moved on to their destinations. this morning the state of hawaii is raising the first legal challenge to president trump's new travel ban. attorneys filed a 40-page lawsuit just before midnight last night asking the federal judge to issue a temporary

restaining order against the ban. president trump signed the new order on monday banning travellers from six majority muslim countries from entering the u.s. for 90 days, refugees are banned for 120 days. hawaii and the justice department are asking the judge to fast track the issue so it is heard before the ban is set to take effect one week from tomorrow. congress is taking its first big step to repeal and replace obamacare today. they are expected to vote on the new gop legislation introduced on monday eliminating the mandate and repeal the obamacare penalties and create tax credits and limit funding for medicaid. tom price endorses the bill but called it a work in progress. >> right now people are losing coverage, we have a plan, we believe, that will allow individuals to pick the coverage they want and the physician and the treatment model that they want, not have the government dictate it to them. >> they face opposition from democrats and some conservative

republicans are resisting, they don't like the proposed tax credits. new this morning, the fbi and cia are launching a criminal probe into wikileaks publication of documents detailing possible cia hacking operations. the investigation is looking into how the documents got to wikileaks and whether they may have been leaked by an employee or contractor. those documents show the cia's team of hackers has developed mal-ware to be able to remotely hack into iphones, ipads android devices. james comey faulktalked about t lack of privacy in america today. >> there is no such thing as absolute privacy in america. there is no place in america outside of judicial reach. >> he did not directly address the wikileaks hack and the documents published so far are largely genuine but it is not clear if they are altered. next at 11:00, san jose

happening now, san jose is making the promise, a promise to make college more affordable to all. in fact, free to some. matt keller is live at san jose city college, not a month ago san francisco began offering free community college. is this similar? >> reporter: i'll get to that in a second. but let me show you behind me what is happening right now. this is a news conference that was scheduled to start at 11:00. you have community college leaders and city leaders here. it appears they are waiting for the mayor to arrive. the mayor has put this altogether this morning. now there is similarities with the san francisco program. they both give money to students to go to college for free, although the scope here in san jose is much, much smaller. and where they get the money from is different. they get the money from the state here for this program. and also the city.

but the goal is the same. they both want to make it more accessible and more affordable for san jose students to go to school. >> michael took a winding bath to san jos city college. he graduated from branham high school five years ago and figured out college wasn't a step to skip to reach his career goals. >> you either go to school or there is no other way about it and my goal is to make it as a dietician. >> reporter: san jose and community college leaders are hoping to help more students like michael reach their goals. today they are launching san jose promise with the plan of providing two years of free community college for 800 low income school students next school year and increasing out reach to middle and high school students to prepare them for higher education. much of it a major extension of programs already in place. >> i got final aid and it made it easier. it was like $600 to be full time but the financial aid chopped it down to $30. >> the state will provide most

of the funding. $750,000 each to evergreen valley, west valley and san jose city colleges. the city will provide infrastructure to the program, with the goal of bringing in more resources and donations. >> considering the living expensing here, it is really difficult to come to school at the same time and pay your bills and have a place to live. and if they offer more money and help people to get educated, it will be an investment for the country. >> reporter: students graduating from a san jose high school can start applying for the granted starting in june. live in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. happening today, an east bay school district is skpoet expected -- expected to vote on whether to cut cheerleading from high school. in contra costa county, cheerleading will be recognized as a sport next year so the district has to figure out how it will pay to keep the program running. officials are proposing cutting

hi, everybody. does it seem like everybody is in a better mood lately. maybe the fact there is a lot of sunshine and no wet weather to handle or challenge us. san jose the 280 at 17, look at the gorgeous sunshine. haze off in the distance as you look at the mountains. more sunshine and warming is my number one accuweather highlight for today. for mog tonight and milder than this morning. and another seven days with no chance of rain. could be the longest stretch since january. flooding at lake port until 11:00 wednesday evening. it is at 9.11 and flood stage is 9 feet and it is key to bringing that down below flood stage. and the storm track continues to ride up to the north thanks to high pressure from the south and bringing some of the 70s we talked about yesterday in l.a. up our way. and 60 in san jose. low to mid-60s around concord,

san ramon, half moon bay, not to bad in san francisco and hayward 59, oakland about 57 right now. temperatures, low to mid-60s along the coast and into san francisco. 67 to 71 for the rest of us. beautiful shot from the east bay hills camera. air is still very clean. no spare the air alert today. this is how it breaks down. high clouds, a few of them roaming but a whole lot of sunshine. and low to mid-60s at 2:00. i would say around 60 to 67 around 4:00 and then dropping to mid-50s around 6:00 and feeling temperatures in the mid-50s this evening. this is one of the brighter and warmer days at the coast this week. doesn't santa cruz look inviting right now. so at the coast, today is the sunniest and warmest days. clouds come in like the marine layer in the summer for the next couple of days. trails, if you are thinking about going out for a run or walking the dog, there is a high amount of tree pollen to contend with. fog in the north bay, around the

bay and the fog at the coast and marine layer there and tuly fog inland and temperatures in mid-40s to 50s tonight. 51 in tahoe. let's take a quick look at tahoe, the snow pack is incredible and so the temperatures. in the 50s today through sunday. monday and tuesday, and then rain starts to move on in. let's taka look at our accuweather seven-day forecast, see how we spike in the mid-60s at the coast and then we cool as the marine layer becomes more developed. we'll touch on that on saturday. back into the upper 60s after being in the low to mid-70s around the boy and inland for tomorrow and friday. set your clock forward an hour and set the batteries in the smoke detector and get ready for 70s on sunday, monday and slight chance on tuesday and we might get some rain on thursday. >> and the temperatures might cause tahoe to melt. >> let's hope it is a slow melt. >> not all at once.
