and in chicago, the wind so strong it blew out windows. we'll have more on that in a moment but let's go right to ginger for that new winter storm moving into the northeast. good morning, ginger. >> robin, are you ready for a mid-march winter smack. well, it is coming at you in the next 24 hours. look at this. throughout pennsylvania into new york city up through even rhode island we have winter weather advisories and a winter storm watch because the snow will start overnight tonight and i stopped it here. the most important crucial time on a friday morning drive. you've got philadelphia in snow. you have new york city in snow. you have southern connecticut into parts of rhode island that will be getting snow in the morning commute and it will be a quick-moving system. i think some of the heftiest totals in eastern long island and the cape. either way you get this at this time of year when everybody has been so warm they say what is happening even if it's one to three inches. robin, george. >> still winter, come on. we move on to that health care showdown on capitol hill. you're looking live at the house energy and commerce committee going for 19 hours and counting drafting their version of

obamacare repeal and this comes as president trump tries to strike a deal with conservative critics resisting the new bill. our chief white house correspondent jon karl is tracking all the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, george. with opposition mounting from fellow republicans, the white house is launching what they are calling a full-court press to sell their plan to repeal and replace obamacare. it's all-nighter time on capitol hill. >> the ayes are 23. the nos are 16. >> reporter: the republican health care plan cleared the first of several committees after 4:00 a.m. this morning. another committee working right through dawn. >> so, buckle in. because we will go until we're done with the amendments. >> reporter: with democrats doing everything they can to derail the bill, or at least delay it as long as possible. >> i guess if we have to stay all night, i'll stay all night to offer my amendment. i don't think it's junk. i think it's an important idea. >> reporter: as the battle moves forward, donald trump the

negotiator and salesman is back in action. >> he's in very much of a sell mode. >> reporter: the president is out to make a deal. now reaching out to conservative critics who have denounced his plan as obamacare-lite. >> i think the president was very clear when he said this bill is open for negotiation. the bill as written will not pass so we need to improve it. >> hold that bible high, puts it down and then he lies. >> reporter: ted cruz once a top trump target during the campaign dined with the president and their wives at the white house. president trump also invited to the white house prominent conservative groups that have already opposed his bill. after the meeting their opposition seemed to soften. >> this is a great step in exchanging ideas to figure out a way that we can all be on the exact same page. >> reporter: earlier house republican leaders began the process of getting the bill through the house. >> costs are skyrocketing. deductibles are going through

the roof. >> reporter: immediately they faced loud objections from democrats. >> this is what you've come up with? this is a bad joke. >> reporter: but for speaker of the house paul ryan the real challenge is keeping republicans on board. >> we're going through the inevitable growing pains of being an opposition party to becoming a governing party. >> reporter: as for that dinner last night with ted cruz, i am told that cruz, his wife and their two daughters spent about two hours here last night at the white house. this morning cruz is tweeting about it. a photograph of his two daughters with the president at the resolute desk in the oval office saying our family had dinner with the president and first lady who were warm and gracious and, robin and george, the charm offensive continues next week. a group of conservatives in the house are invited here to the white house to do a little bowling as they make the case for supporting the bill. >> but, jon, still, the president faces challenges on

other fronts including that revised travel ban, hawaii overnight being the first state to file a lawsuit against that revised ban. >> reporter: yes, the state of hawaii is arguing that the travel ban is unconstitutional because effectively it is not much different than the first travel ban which was blocked by the courts. the white house, however, believes they are on solid legal ground that they have narrowed this travel ban so that it will withstand legal scrutiny. >> all right, jon, thank you. >> a lot of foreign policy news as well. martha raddatz is here and, martha, it appears the president is about to appoint another former critic to a key post. >> he was a big critic of donald trump, it's jon huntsman, the former governor of utah, former presidential candidate, ambassador to russia. he has very little experience with that, but he was the ambassador to china. donald trump once called jon huntsman lightweight, weak and jon huntsman did not at first

support donald trump, then he did. and he withdrew that support after the "access hollywood" tapes. >> probably important to have someone who was not connected with the campaign. given all the questions about contacts with russia during the campaign. >> i think that's true and the other thing is he just needs good experienced people and they have reached out. they have cast a wide net. they found jon huntsman. he's very well respected. he will learn very quickly and engage with russia. >> a brand-new marine mission in this fight in syria. >> this is incredible. i think so few people realize how involved the u.s. is in syria. we now have 900 troops in syria. if you remember there's a cap at 500, but they've played numbers games for years. those extra 400 will only be there 120 days, so they don't count. but they are getting closer and closer to the battle, george. they really need a strategic plan. >> we've had a lot of special operation forces in the battle. first time you're having a conventional force. >> you've seen them in strikers

and seen pictures of them in syria. astonishing when you think about it because it has been piecemeal for so many years. >> martha raddatz, thanks very much. george, now to the investigation into that massive leak of cia documents. the search zeroing in on this building right here for whoever released sensitive material to wikileaks. our chief investigative correspondent brian ross is here with the latest. >> good morning, the fbi is now launched a full-scale criminal investigation of who stole the cia secrets the editor in chief of wikileaks is speaking for the first time. the hunt for the mole by the fbi is focused on employees and contractors who worked in this nondescript building outside washington, d.c. the headquarters of the government's top secret center for cyberintelligence, the cci. >> it has created a great deal of harm and i cannot think of it in any other terms than criminal activity. >> reporter: this morning from

the embassy in london the editor in chief provided new details about the massive cia leak. >> this is a historic act. of devastating incompetence to have created such an arsenal and stored it all in one place and not secured it. >> when wikileaks posted the e-mail from the democratic party hacked by russian intelligence candidate donald trump was full of praise. >> wikileaks i love wikileaks. >> reporter: while the cia leak was serious not so much the russian hack of the democrats. >> there is a massive, massive difference between those two things. >> reporter: but both are illegal and under investigation by the fbi. phone manufacturers including apple and google are scrambling to make sure the cia can no longer hack into their devices or systems. and samsung said it is urgently looked into the claim the cia

can turn its televisions into listening devices when they appear to be off. it's illegal for cia to use any of those techniques in the u.s. against u.s. citizens but the fbi can with a court approved warrant. as the director of the fbi said yesterday there's no such thing as absolute privacy in america. robin. >> thank you. president trump also facing new fallout over his explosive and evidence-free claim that president obama ordered his phones tapped facing questions at yesterday's white house briefing sean spicer read this statement. >> there is no reason that we should -- that we have to think that the president is talking of any investigation whatsoever. >> let's get more from pierre thomas. pierre, the pressure now mounting on fbi director james comey and the justice department to either back up or knock down the president's claim. >> reporter: that's right, george. it's getting to be put up or shut up time for everybody involved. the house intelligence committee is calling on comey to appear in a hearing scheduled for march 20th and senators lindsey graham

and sheldon whitehouse sent a letter to comey and the justice department demanding records to show whether there were any wiretaps related to trump. graham said he would subpoena comey and the justice department if he had to, george. >> this isn't all that complicated. they either did or didn't and the fbi director says he wants to get the truth out there but there are divisions inside the justice department over how and whether to do that? >> reporter: yeah, george, there's some at the justice department who want comey requested to go away believing if they put out a statement challenging trump's claims it opens pab pandora's box. on the other hand there are those who share comey's concerns that trump's allegations are false and erode trust in the fbi and say such damaging comments will continue if not combated. >> the fbi director did speak in boston yesterday. >> yeah, he didn't mention russia or trump's tweets. sources familiar with it say he's being patient for a number of reasons. one his message is out there about how he feels about the tweets and he's mindful he's the

subject of an inspector general investigation which is focused on whether he broke justice department guidelines in how he handled the clinton e-mail investigation including making those public comments. now he's trying to do this by the book and through his bosses. he did suggest he's planning to be around another 6 1/2 years, the full length of his tenured term. we'll see, george. >> we will see about that. pierre thomas, thanks very much. >> devastating winds across the midwest and northeast topping 80 miles an hour here in new york. and abc's alex perez is in chicago where those gusts blew out skyscraper windows. good morning, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, robin. the wind was no joke picking up a piece of outdoor furniture and slamming it across the street and shattering that window up there. overnight vicious winds wreaking havoc across the nation. in michigan gusts up to 68 miles per hour. >> it's scary to think winds are that strong. it can lift a carport up. >> reporter: the ntsb investigating after this plane carrying the university of

michigan men's basketball team slid off the runway after trying to take off in high winds. >> we have a few people banged up a little bit but other than that everybody is healthy. >> reporter: brutal winds ripping off school roofs. in detroit alone, more than 800,000 homes without power. five dying in this apartment complex. the powerful winds fueling the flames making escapes nearly impossible. there are civilians jumping out of the windows at the location. >> it was a horrendous fire to fight. we have high winds that drove the fire right through the building. >> the fierce burst toppling tractor trailers across the midwest. watch as one on a busy ohio highway gets knocked over. >> there it goes. >> reporter: in upstate new york, gusts blowing up to 81 miles an hour leaving nearly 130,000 customers in the dark. >> it is so dark out here, power is knocked out. >> reporter: the winds believed to be responsible for knocking this freight train right off the rails.

and here in chicago, power lines popping, even sending chunks of glass flying from the 38th floor of this skyscraper. and if you're driving in these windy conditions big suvs and vans are more susceptible to being pushed or flipped over by wind so it might be best to park somewhere safe and wait it out. >> makes a lot of sense, thanks very much. across the plains they are facing devastating wildfires. the largest ever in kansas as dozens tear through the region. abc's phillip mena is in oklahoma with the latest. good morning, phillip. >> reporter: george, good morning. this is one of the many homes evacuated before the fires swept through here. only a few recognizable items left. a water heater, there's the washer/dryer. it is just a haunting reminder of the devastation brought on by these wildfires. >> this morning, nearly three dozen wildfires raging in the u.s. from the southern plains down to florida, more than a million

acres scorched. thousands forced to evacuate. >> it's never been this bad before. >> reporter: as authorities work to keep people out of harm's way. >> so i got a semi truck blocking half the lane now. >> in kansas saving a stranded trucker. the largest fire in the state's history creating thick smoke that made it impossible to see down interstate 70. similar scenes playing out in oklahoma. whipping winds and when the fire jumped across this highway it's impossible for a big rig to turn around quickly and the driver of this 18-wheeler had no choice but to abandon his truck just in time too because this is all that's left. near naples, parts of i-75 shut down as a wall of smoke and flames threatened drivers. >> the flames are super close to the interstate. >> reporter: 7500 acres already burned there. the rash of fires across the u.s. being blamed for six

deaths. four in texas alone. some good news here. the humidity has gone up and it's expected to rain here this weekend so hopefully that will help get these wildfires under control. george. phillip, thanks very much. amy with today's other top stories. a real scare with the 911 system overnight. >> there was a glitch that lasts for hours and prevented at&t customers from calling 911. that outage affected customers in nine states and washington, d.c. police departments offered alternate numbers until 911 was up and running again and the fcc is looking into what happened. well, the number of people crossing into the u.s. from mexico illegally has dropped dramatically. down 40% in president trump's first weeks in office. homeland security officials say border patrol agents apprehended significantly fewer undocumented immigrants from january to february. they credit the president's tough stance on immigration. well, there is more trouble for an iconic retailer. radio shack declared bankruptcy for the second time in two

years. it now plans to close at least 200 stores. and in california, some bay area homeowners are on edge literally. look at this. their backyards are disappearing falling into the creek below due too all that recent heavy rain. they say the land makes noise and shakes and then their houses as well as it all falls away and trying to decide if they should stay or go. and finally one woman's guardian angel, take a look at this incredible video. you can see her struggle to cross the tracks. there's a guy from new jersey. he comes racing towards her. his name is joe manageo. he leaves his car. he sprints to her side and pulls her away, look at that. with seconds to spare. she was taken to the hospital as a precaution. joe insists he is not a hero. he says he saw something, something needed to be done and he did it. he said that she was so scared she actually stopped. she could see the train coming and she froze and so that train missed her with just a few inches. >> she froze.

>> thank goodness for that. we turn to the latest on that indiana murder mystery where two young girls were killed on a hike. one of the grandfathers holding his first press conference as investigators look at possible ties to a similar cold case and, amy you have more on that. >> that's right, george. there isn't a known link between the 2012 cold case involving two iowa cousins who were also found murdered in a rural area. but investigators in both cases say they are comparing notes and some of the details are strikingly similar. this morning liberty german's grandfather speaking out. >> this horrible crime has tore a hole in our families. >> it's been 24 days since their bodies were found along this wooded trail in dellphi indiana, the killer at large. a photo and a voice. >> down the hill, down the hill. >> along with this picture

foundation on her phone. some of the only clues to the crime. a father a few hundred miles away helping the murder case could lead to a break in his own daughters and nieces abduction and murder. >> everything started coming back to me. >> on july 13, 2012 elisabeth collins and eric cook went for an afternoon bike ride and never returned. >> the frantic search. >> pointing out the similarities. both girls taken in secluded areas. their bodies founded in wooded terrain and both crimes committed on the 13th of the month. >> two kids at once is very uncommon. two kids being taken at once and also just being on the 13th of the month. just kind of struck me as really odd. >> reporter: authorities hunting abigail and liberty's killers saying they have compared notes with investigators in iowa. >> at this point we're not comfortable saying, yes there is

a connection or no, there's not. we don't have enough information. >> on the surface these cases have similarities. you have underage kids on trails remote areas of two different states killed during daylight hours. but once you get beyond that the cases really aren't similar at least based on what we know. >> reporter: as pink ribbons dot the tiny town in iowa for elizabeth and lyric five years ago so do orange lights glow today for liberty and abby. investigators are cautious about making any link but for the father of elizabeth collins, he is still holding out hope five years later that he might get some answers, george. >> okay, amy, thanks very much. let's talk to dan abrams and callahan walsh, child advocate with the national center of missing and exploited children and, callahan, let me begin with you. this is fairly rare, isn't it? >> absolutely. you know, we do see this at the national center where two kids will go missing at the same time but it's usually siblings that go missing and usually with a noncustodial or parental abduction.

the fact these two were unrelated and this was a nonfamily abduction, it's definitely a rare case for the national center. >> and, dan, no evidence of any kind of link but what will investigators try to do to see if there's any connection? >> typically in a case like this what you want to do is see first of all is there any connection between these families? meaning, was there anyone who worked for either of the parent, even temporarily. you're looking for something that can somehow serve as a thread between these two. is there any physical evidence obviously would be the first question. it seems that's not the case. i think we'd know about that if there was any connection in regard to physical evidence but looking for relationships. the problem is if this were a cry of opportunity and a stranger then it makes it even harder to try to link them up. >> do you agree with brad beneath the surface there aren't many similarities between the two. >> so far that we know of, but, again, i think it is smart for them to look into possible

connections because these kinds of things are so rare. >> and, callahan, what is the nature of this crime in indiana? you know, some people said it could have been just a crime of opportunity tell you about the perpetrator. >> absolutely but it's interesting to note that there's two victims in this case and that puts the perpetrator in a high risk situation. his boldness and the fact that he's going after two victims shows a level of control that may indicate he's done something like this in the past. >> and i like the fact that the grandfather is coming out now. why? because people involved in the old case, right, the indiana case is all over the news right now. if anybody knows about it, come forward. what about someone that missed something in the iowa case and weren't watching as closely or since then they've heard someone make a comment about two girls in iowa, et cetera. that's the sort of thing that could be really -- >> you think five years later it still could be solved. >> oh, yeah, i think what you're doing is you're now going to get more people. it's what callahan's

organization does, which is try to publicize these kinds of events to say, hey, america, please help. if you know anything and i think in connection with the iowa case in particular, the newfound publicity could lead someone to come forward and say i don't know anything about this indiana case but i'll tell you, huh, i didn't realize that happened in iowa and i'll tell you what a friend of a friend told me he heard. >> and, callahan, you know, as you said these are rare cases, but is there anything that parents can learn from them? >> absolutely. you know, parents can use this as a teachable moment. i think it's a shining example that child safety education is still important. you know, there's great programs like the kidsmart programs and err resources where parents can store digital i.d. in your phone and these things are rare. they don't happen as often but they are still happening in this day and age. >> okay, callahan, dan, thanks very much. robin. okay, george, coming up in just two minutes why chrisley may not know best.

got into a dispute with a crew member over the cost of an in-flight blanket and david kerley joins us. authorities say the man was upset because he was cold and that he asked for a blanket. they said that would be $12. the airline calling him unruly. tell us what happened. what does the guy say that got him kicked off the plane? >> it was a morning flight, amy. it was from las vegas to hawaii and several miles -- several hundred miles off california the pilot decides to turn around the aircraft and goes back to l.a.x. so the 66-year-old man did get cold. he asked the flight attendant for a blanket. the flight attendant said as you mentioned, you know, costs you 12 bucks. that upset him. asked for the number for corporate and then he said i'd like to take someone, according to authorities, behind the woodshed and that set off alarm bells apparently and that's when the flight attendant notified the cockpit. >> behind the woodshed, you know, kind of colorful language. doesn't sound like a very serious threat. >> yeah, here's what we don't know. we don't know what kind of

language he used, whether he was very intense, loud, whether it was calm. we don't know any of those things, and so we have no idea whether the flight attendant may or may not have overreacted. but the flight attendant did call the captain and that set off this series, but this kind of reflects back to, you know, everyone feels like the airlines are nickel and diming you. you got to pay for a blanket, a meal, overhead space so it fits into that narrative. >> they were going to hawaii. i'm feeling for all the passengers on the plane who thought they were headed to vacation and had to turn around. what is the standard for kicking someone off the plane? is that at a flight attendant's discretion. >> the captain is in control of the aircraft. the airlines is saying the captain is in the cockpit with the doors closed and locked and gets a call from his crew and says, listen, i have a problem with a passenger and i think we should -- >> couldn't he have said just give him the blanket. >> the captain may not have even known that. the flight attendant may have said i have an unruly passenger. the captain makes the decision.
