live where you live. this is abc 7 news. now at 11:00, rush hour chaos. the bay area evening commute comes to a halt. sky 7 shows the scene. countless drivers were going nowhere. >> this is the reason why. gunfire broke out on a busy freeway. the highway patrol says this was a targeted shooting. good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. it 80 reopened around 9:00 after a five-hour closure. >> the shooting happened at 3:30 on eastbound 80 near san pablo avenue and richmond 80. we're live in richmond with the developing story, cornell in. >> reporter: traffic is flowing on i-80 again tonight. three men are being questioned by richmond police about the shooting which targeted two motorists. sky 7 shows the shattered window

of this honda minute vee van, fired by a passing car, eastbound 80 in richmond at the start of the commute, forced the closure of the freeway for hours. the man and woman inside were body shot. his multiple gunshot wounds so critical an air ambulance had to land on the freeway to take him to a trauma center. were these victims targeted? >> we don't believe this is a random shooting. we don't believe there's any danger to the public right now. >> reporter: the motive still unknown. a good samaritan driving a red volvo stopped in the middle of the freeway to help. he did not want to be identified as he later drove away. witnesses to the crime reached for their cell phones when the shooting began. >> the takeaway is we had great witnesses call 911, provide a description of a possible suspect and vehicle. >> reporter: shortly after sky 7 was overhead as rich modern list stopped a silver dodge charger on 17th street. the car matched the description given by witnesses.

three men were detained in connection to the incident. the car was later towed away. the commute thrown into chaos. the freeway backed up for miles and detours weren't working. >> you've been sitting in traffic? >> i tried rerouting. but it's bad. >> how long were you in traffic? >> we are sitting like two hours. >> reporter: the chp doesn't know if this shooting is connected to a string of nine other freeway shootings this year alone. >> we sent out a push alert when eastbound 80 reopened to traffic after the five-hour-long closure. be the first to know when breaking news happens where you live. download the abc 7 news app. a south bay police officer shot and killed a man after getting a call from his parents that he was acting erratically. this happened in santa clara outside an apartment complex near deborah and pacetta drives. katy marzullo is live near the scene tonight. >> reporter: you can see scott boulevard here is still closed

some six hours after the shooting. the shooting happened kind of underneath the scott boulevard overpass there. but exactly what happened is still unclear. i talked with people who knew the man who was shot and they say they're shocked. santa clara police got a call around 5:00 from a home on deborah drive. >> we had received information from the caller in regards to their son who was acting erratically. >> reporter: officers arrived and found the man in question, but they say he took off. the captain says an officer deployed a taser at some point. it's not known if it had any effect. >> during their contact with the officer, the incident transitioned into a situation where an officer had to use deadly force. >> reporter: police say the man who was shot and killed is in his mid-20s. neighbors say he lives with his parents and they're a nice family. >> he was very nice. every morning he'd say good morning. he was never with bad guys.

i never saw that. i don't understand what happened. >> reporter: police are not yet saying if the man was armed. the officer who shot him has been with santa clara police for eight years and with another agency before that. he's now on cumulative leave. the district attorney's office is conducting its own investigation into the shooting. new at 11:00, police say this mother is accused of abandoning her 2-year-old son in the middle of the street while she was high on meth. it happened in lake port tonight in lake county. a police sergeant saw the boy in the street unarmed -- unharmed i should say -- and turned him over to child protector services. 39-year-old sofia polito is in jail on drug and felony child endangerment charges. two sex assaults in the same area, around the same time of day. authorities in palo alto are trying to figure out if this surveillance image of the attacker is the same man pictured in this sketch from an attack last week. abc 7 news reporter lisa is live

in palo alto with new details. >> reporter: dan, very disturbing for sure. both victims were here to use the bus service. one woman was attacked as she waited to board a bus. the other was attacked soon after getting off of one. have you seen this man? >> no. >> reporter: authorities are hoping someone will. they're not sure if the man in the sketch is the same person in black who groped a woman just last night. >> the male actually ran up to her and grabbed her crotch. she screamed loudly. he let go. >> reporter: it happened on alma street minutes after the woman stepped off a bus at the palo alto transit center. >> hopefully they put a stop to it. i've heard more and more stories around the area on campus, things like that, which does make us a little -- feel unsafe or insecure. >> reporter: she's talking about last wednesday's attack on another woman, standing at this kiosk at around 11:00 p.m.,

waiting for the marguerite shuttle when she said this man walked up to her and started fondling her. >> she screamed and began to push him away. as she attempted to leave he stopped her from leaving and grabbed her and continued to grope her. >> reporter: the woman literally fought him off, then he ran away. >> concerning. just because i use public transportation a lot. and i try to walk a lot. >> reporter: transit riders should notice stepped-up patrols in the area. in palo alto, lisa amin ga leash shan. berkeley police are looking for this man they say is a suspect at a sexual battery at berkeley city college february 20th. police say the suspect is known to frequent college campuses. he's had several encounters with uc berkeley police. they say including peeping incidents. the fbi is trying to find a person who e-mailed a bomb threat to the addison jcc in los

gatos today. the threat came in just before noon. everyone, including children at the jewish day school, safely evacuated to the church next door. police and bomb-sniffing dogs swept the building. nothing suspicious was found. everyone was let back in around 4:00 this afternoon. another run-in with the law for oakland raiders linebacker aldon smith. he was detained by san francisco police this morning for being drunk in public. police say smith was in a car that hit an unmarked police car in china basin. the driver was arrested on suspicion of dui. smith was suspended by the nfl in 2015 for vice of its substance abuse policy. the league is set to discuss his reinstatement this month. the rain has stopped but the landslide problems continue. sky 7 was over rifle range road on the border of el cerrito in richmond where a big chunk of the street has broken away. cars can no longer get through. john medlock shared these pictures from the ground. the city of richmond is

responsible for the road. we have calls in to them, we'll let you know what we find out. san jose, over 150 flood victims packed into city council chambers to give the mayor and council members an earful about why there wasn't a better warping about the problems at coyote creek and anderson dam last week. >> anderson overflows, there is a flood, and every one of you should know that. >> i carried my dogs out through waste water that was up to my thighs. and i am still scratching and i am still itching and we have no idea what was in that area. >> the mayor and assistant city manager admit a failure in warning about the floods. city council is set to hold another public joint meeting with the water district on april 28th. the damaged way ator on orom could go into limited use next week. the spillway has been dry so temporary repairs could made. as storm runoff and snow melt fills the reservoir it will

outrageous behavior caught on camera. a brutal attack in the middle of rush hour traffic on highway 101 in san francisco. >> take a look. the man behind the video is sharing it to make sure these attackers are caught as abc 7 news reporter melanie woodrow explains, this september the first time these dirt bikers have been spotted. >> reporter: this video starts with a sideshow on southbound 101 and escalates with one bike colliding with this white car. suddenly the other bikers speed up. at the caesar chavez exit a red car, presumably with the bikers, appears to box in the driver of the white car. the person who took this video asks to remain anonymous. >> they approached the vehicle. they started punching in the panels on the vehicle. hitting the windows, breaking

the windows. and another vehicle impeded my view so i couldn't see exactly if the man was pulled out of the vehicle or got out on his own. four to five men were hitting him, kicking him, even when he was down. very clearly they broke his leg. >> reporter: the man who took this video says he got out of his car when the bikers left. >> he had a broken leg, as i said. he had a bloodied face. he had road rash. he was in pretty rough shape. we called 911. >> reporter: the former new yorker says it was reminiscent of this henry hudson parkway incident where he used to live hat prompted him to begin recording. >> these are the types of incidents that need to get attention, that need to get prosecuted. >> reporter: chp says the m.o. is similar to other incidents in san francisco. >> no plates, they remove their plates. no helmets most of the time. >> reporter: if you see something like this, chp says don't get out of your vehicle. >> they're already mad, beating on your vehicle. you get out, it's just -- good things are not going to happen.

>> reporter: instead, call 911. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. >> tonight the victims of f 35-year-old uber driver who lives in modesto but comes into the city to work. uc berkeley police have photos they want you to see from the protests against milo yiannopoulos. remember last month a small group of rogue protesters set fires and smashed windows around sproul plaza? their actions forced the university to cancel the conservative news editor's speech. tonight police released 31 new pictures of people they want to talk to about the violence and vandalism on february 1st. you can take a closer look at the pictures on our abc news app and abc7news.com. also in berkeley, abc 7 news has learned of the ten people arrested on charges of assault and battery at a pro-donald trump rally over the weekend, only one of them is from berkeley. the other nine are from other bay area cities.

police are still looking for six suspects. former california governor arnold schwarzenegger could make a political comeback in the u.s. senate. politico reports schwarzenegger could run next year when senator dianne feinstein is up for re-election. schwarzenegger's spokesman didn't rule it out. he said the former governor is focused on redistricting reform and keeping his options open on how to accomplish that. bart says it won't raise fares but will likely have to make changes to fill a budget gap projected to be at least $25 million. the board is looking at possibly adding a surcharge for paper tickets. there wouldn't be a surcharge if you pay with a clipper card. bart is considering reducing the discount for seniors, youth, and people with disabilities. let's focus now on what is a gorgeous weather forecast. finally a nice long break from the rain. >> it's going to last through the weekend. so you can pretty much continue with the shorts and the t-shi t-shirts. not too many places in the winter you can wear shorts. let me show you the temperatures

tomorrow afternoon in the east bay. a nice sampling of springlike conditions. 70 degrees in oakland. it's going to be mild, sunshine. fremont 71 degrees. check out live doppler 7. we have quite a bit of high cloudiness and that's going to keep us insulated. tomorrow morning if you're walking to bart, biking to work, you don't have to worry about it being too cold. temperatures right now in the 50s. many of you have been holding kind of like where you would see your high temperatures for the middle of winter. it's definitely mild outside. highs for today look like this. look at the mid-70s clover dale, santa rosa, concord. we saw 70s today department near the coast where this was around. look at this time lapse. this reminds me of summer. as the fog was rolling in, golden gate the top of the towers barely visible. you're going to see fog like this again tomorrow morning for your commute, lingering into parts of the afternoon. tonight city hall in san francisco all lit up as you see in green in honor of st. patrick's day.
