firefighters blaming the popular yet potentially dangerous device. and magic mishap. famous illusionist, criss angel rushed to the hospital. the dangerous stunt gone terribly wrong. and good evening and thanks for joining us on a saturday night. i'm rebecca jarvis in for tom llamas, and we begin with the security breach at the white house. the first known breach since president trump took office. an intruder carrying a backpack climbing the fence just before midnight arrested on the south grounds near the entrance to the residence. president trump inside the white house at the time, today praising the secret service for their quick work. the breach under investigation as authorities reveal more about what the intruder was allegedly carrying. abc's gloria riviera leads us off. >> reporter: an intruder is in custody after the breach at the white house while the president

was at home. the incident happened just before midnight friday night with a fence-jumper wearing a backpack scaled the fence approximately 6 feet tall. the intruder had to make it over the perimeter fence right there with spikes on the top meant to keep people out. he then made his way onto the south side of the grounds. just a couple of hundred yards from the east wing where the first family's residence is located. the fence-scaler was then stopped and questioned, allegedly telling the agent he was a friend of the president and had an appointment. this video from that time shows the lights from the south lawn turning on as he was apparently discovered. the secret service arrested 26-year-old jonathan tran. his backpack was tested for hazardous material, but nothing was found. authorities say he was carrying mace. today, president trump thanking the secret

>> the secret service did a fantastic job. it was a troubled person. very sad actually. the secret service was fantastic. this is supposed to be one of the safest places in the world. how can people keep jumping over this fence? >> this is short enough, and literally anybody that is able-bodied can get over it. >> reporter: as the first family was eating their holiday meal, the secret service surrounded him and took him into custody. and a year earlier, this man carrying a knife sprinted across the lawn and was caught just after he got all the way inside. tonight, the suspect is in federal custody. there are plans to boost security here by raising the fence. that work is slated to be completed next year. rebecca? >> gloria, thank you. now to late developments tonight in the massive shakeshakeu

shakeup at the justice department. one of america's top federal prosecutors defiantly refusing the attorney general's request to resign. now saying he has been fired. one of dozens of prosecutors caught in the purge of president obama's appointees. this as president trump trying to focus his energy on the health care bill. here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: at the trump justice department, an abrupt changing of the guard. overnight, attorney general, jeff sessions asked for the resignations of all 46 u.s. attorneys left over from the obama administration. i didn't resign. moments ago, i was fired, tweeted preet bharara. u.s. attorney for the southern district of new york. he is one of the most prominent federal prosecutors in the country, known as a crusader against corporate corruption. last november at trump tower, he told reporters the president-elect personally asked him to stay. >> we had a good meeting, and i said i would absolutely consider staying on. i agreed to stay on. >> reporter: not anymore. today, the attorney general spared only two of the obama-era prosecutors in virginia and maryland. on thursday, trump loyalist shawn hannity called for a purge. >> for weeks, we have been warning you about the deep state

president obama had who are hell bent. tonight, it's time for the trump administration to purge them before it's too late. >> reporter: but the white house says cleaning house at justice was simply routine. presidents reagan, clinton and george w. bush all installed their own people, too. one big difference now is that the trump justice department is already embroiled in several major controversies. investigating russian meddling in the election. including the possibility that trump campaign advisers colluded in that effort. trump's own recusing himself. >> therefore, i have recused myself in the matters that deal with the trump campaign. >> reporter: all that poses a major distraction as the president tries to manage his

first piece of legislation. the effort to repeal and replace obamacare. today, the vice president went to kentucky to sell the plan. giving a frank assessment of its challenges. >> folks, let me be clear. this will be a battle in washington, d.c. >> reporter: sure enough, today in california, republican congressman darryl issa's constituents sounded off. >> how are you are going to vote on ryan's plan? >> reporter: today, the president headed to a trump national golf club outside d.c. not to play, but to meet with some of his top advisers. >> we're having a part of a cabinet meeting, and we're just doing it here. the whole group of people, and we're having great discussions. >> and david wright joins us from the white house. david, we heard you report on those big changes at the justice department which also is under pressure to produce evidence on those wiretapping claims. >> reporter: that's right, rebecca. it was a week ago today that president trump tweeted out a bombshell, accusing president obama of bugging the phones at trump tower. not a shred of evidence, but the

house intelligence committee has given the justice department until monday to give any evidence it happened if they have any evidence. >> a tight deadline. david, thank you. and george stephanopoulos goes one-on-one with the white house point man tomorrow on abc's "this week." we turn now to the bitter cold weather tonight. winter storms on the move, and a nor'easter approaching next week. cars skidding off icy highways in the northeast. a fire truck rolling over on interstate 89 in connecticut. and this alaska air flight smashing into a de-icing truck at boston logan's airport. abc's senior meteorologist, rob marciano with the images coming in. >> reporter: tonight, this giant snow slide in washington state, trapping 42 high school students on a field trip. >> we heard it was going to snow, but we didn't know it was going to snow this bad. >> reporter: the students safe, but road crews say they could be stuck there until monday. >> there were some of the kids that needed medication and only packed a certain amount, so i guess they were helicoptering in. >> reporter: across much of the

setting the stage for the potential of a big snow event, and we are getting more confident on that. watches have been posted for much of the northeast, and now blizzard watches for coastal new york and southern new england, including new york city and boston. mostly for monday night into tuesday, but first, a quick moving mid-south snow maker, and we'll get into national, and may nashville, and maybe memphis. it will come from the northwest storm that will dive into chicago for a monday morning rush, teaming up with the southern jet, and that will make for explosive coastal energy monday and tuesday, and we're looking for blowing snow as well, and growing more confident to see over a foot of snow over the i-95 quarter, and high impact mid march winter event. rebecca? >> rob, thank you so much. now we turn to the deadly house fire in pennsylvania. triggering a new debate over the potential dangers of hoverboa s

hoverboards. a 3-year-old girl killed when her house was consumed by flames. the hoverboard blamed for the fire. abc's eva pilgrim on the investigation. >> we're getting rapid calls and reports of kids on the first floor. >> reporter: tonight this devastating fire in harrisburg, pa killing one child, two others in critical condition. authorities say a hoverboard ignited the flames. >> it's all because of a hoverboard. >> reporter: this facebook video shows the moment firefighters arrived, giant flames consuming this row home. a father, clearly panicked, his three children still inside. >> we need a ladder on the second floor. got people on the roof. >> reporter: one girl jumped from a second floor porch to safety, two others pulled out by firefighters. this just the latest hoverboard hazard making headlines. this video captured on a so many security camera shows the moment a hoverboard's batteries exploded. huge flames ripping through the home north of chicago. >> all i could think to myself is if there's a good likelihood we will lose both of our children today. >> reporter: and more

frightening scenes. others igniting on sidewalks. this one burning near a baby stroller at this washington state mall. >> for no apparent reason, it exploded. >> reporter: a million of them under recall. two girls rescued for that pennsylvania fire were air lifted to a burn center, and are in critical condition tonight. >> thank you. and overseas tonight, the deadly twin bomb attacks in syria. explosions ripping through the center of damascus. at least 40 people killed visiting religious shrining. at least 120 wounded. the attacks targeting holy sites. here's abc's jennifer eccleston. >> reporter: the bloody debris from the blasts litter the streets of damascus. buses riddled with shrapnel, a mangled wheelchair among the wreckage. the attackers striking shiite tourists from iraq, visiting a holy site. at least 40 are dead. more than 100 injured. this iraqi lucky to be alive. we finished the visit and then
