certainly felt would be a safe right turn until net another accident at the corner of evans road and kennedy drive captured on video because joy has seen so many that she decided to begin documenting them. >> is this, in your opinion, a safe intersection? >> no, absolutely not. >> because? >> well, because somebody is going to get hurt, maybe killed. h these cars fly like maniacs down this street. >> reporter: this was the first rollover but hardly the first accident. why else would she plant a row of ten boulders in front of her house. all she wants are a couple of stop signs. by joy's estimate, there have been 15 accidents in the last eight years. that's more than two per year and that doesn't even count the car that went through her house 20 years ago. >> well, we had the people that work at the planning commission out here last year for this accident and he said, well, they really didn't give me appear answer. it was like, you know, maybe they don't have the money.

oh, they have to do a study, that's what they told me. >> reporter: we did show the video to the police chief, who is aware of accidents at the intersection and expressed concern. >> that's up to the city engineers. >> reporter: the city engineer did not respond to our inquiries today. then again, we also sent them this video. from milpitas, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. san francisco police arrested a woman who stabbed a man on a busy section of market street this morning. abc 7 news was on the corner of market and 7th street as officers collected evidence. investigators say the woman approached a man just before noon and stabbed him several times in the neck. a security guard at a nearby pharmacy says he had a run-in with the suspect at the store just moments before the stabbing. >> she came in very fast, dropped her bags very quick and said i'm going to kill somebody, i'm hurt somebody. >> the woman threw a sharp object in the mailbox. officers called the postal

service to retrieve it. the victim was rushed to the hospital. no word on his condition. the woman accused of an armed standoff with san francisco police on friday is expected in court tomorrow. 57-year-old samantha helstrom pulled a gun on two men inside her apartment building friday afternoon, then barricaded herself inside her unit. authorities evacuated the building as they negotiated with her. police say she shouted "kill me" several times. authorities blocked off several blocks near her apartment and evacuated nearby businesses as a precaution. she surrendered peacefully seven hours after the incident began. the families of three girls sexually abused by a former morgan hill elementary teacher have reached a tentative $8.25 million settlement for the school district. a 55-year-old john arthur lloyd is serving a 40-year prison sentence for the molestation of three girls who were students at paradise valley elementary school as well as a fourth girl who did not go to that school.

the district's school board will meet tomorrow night to discuss how to better protect its students. both sides will be back in court on wednesday. former president obama has been in san jose all day, but no one is saying why he's in town. he had no known appearances. >> abc 7 news reporter david louie is live outside the fairmont hotel where the former president appears to have been meeting with some tech executives. >> reporter: the former president's daily agenda is no longer an open book as it once was so we're only led to believe that he might be in san jose for some quiet fund-raising, perhaps for a presidential library. nearly two months out of office, former president obama continues to draw fan, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. even some children interrupted their field trip in hopes of seeing him. >> if you get a chance to see him, what are you going to say? >> hi, my name is alexander. >> reporter: anything else you're going to say? >> i know. nice to meet you. >> reporter: the media no longer get daily reports on what he's

doing or with whom he's meeting. we only know he's holed up inside the fairmont hotel meeting with some silicon valley tech leaders. while that was going on, the white house was backtracking on the tweet sent out by president trump, accusing mr. obama of tapping phones at trump tower. >> he doesn't really think that president obama went up and tapped his phone personally. but i think there's no question that the obama administration, that there were actions about surveillance and other activities that occurred in the 2016 election. that is a widely reported activity that occurred back then. >> reporter: this is the first time the white house has explained the president's tweets. last week press secretary spicer refused to discuss them. one of the people hoping to see mr. obama in san jose hopes mr. trump will learn an important lesson. >> we all have to hope that he will see what he has done and then withhold these kinds of comments in the future. clearly what he said shouldn't have been said publicly. >> reporter: finally the motorcade emerged from the hotel's underground garage with the former president in the second vehicle.

his next destination, unknown. it all happened so quickly, spectators expressed some disappointment. in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. well, the board says it all. flight cancellations are popping up at bay area airports a day before a huge snowstorm will hit the northeastern united states. airlines are trying to prevent chaos by cancelling flights now and positioning their planes out of harm's way. that way they can restart operations quickly after the storm passes. delta, southwest, united and american have announced hundreds of flight cancellations, primarily to the new york, boston and washington, d.c., areas. it's a very different weather scene right here in the bay area. there is lots of sun, especially with daylight saving time kicking in. >> it's nice, isn't it? this is a live from our emeryville camera. spencer christian is here with a look at the forecast. >> a great way to start the week. here's a look at live doppler 7. we have sunny skies all over the bay area and it has been warm as well. high temperatures up to 80

through oroville. the main spillway may be back in use by the end of the week. the department of water resources says it expects to open the waterway around march 17th. this comes nearly a month after fear of flooding triggered a massive evacuation order. they're celebrating a birthday in moraga. maybe celebrating isn't what's going on here. the balloon and streamers were drawing attention to a sinkhole that opened up a year ago. our media partners at the "east bay times" report the city has approved a $3.3 million fix and promised the sinkhole will not see a second birthday. it is a very big day for the demolition of the old eastern span of the bay bridge. the last 288-foot section was removed today. it's the very last truss of the old steel bridge. demolition began in november of 2013. while it's still not finished, this truss was one of the last visible sections of the bridge for drivers. the span will be taken apart out of sight in oakland. the concrete foundations will be

demolished sometime this fall. uc berkeley is poised to have its first female chancellor. today janet napolitano nominated 72-year-old carol christ for the position. christ is couraurrently the president of smith college in massachusetts. she worked at cal from 1970 to 2002 rising from english professor to dean and ultimately executive vice chancellor. the uc board of regents will vote on her nomination thursday. well, they are taking to the streets to fight diabetes in solano county. abc 7 news was there as touro university unveiled a mobile diabetes prevention and awareness center. it will be used in visits to schools, farmers markets, and features a kitchen to teach healthy eating habits. those attending today's event got a lesson in healthy cooking and some were screened for diabetes as well. that mobile center will also offer screenings. there was an unexpected stop for one couple heading to the hospital for the birth of their child. we'll tell you what happened.

in less than two weeks, a new professional soccer team will make its debut in san francisco. t it's been an uphill battle for the new team. >> lyanne melendez is live where their matches will take place. practice actually starts soon, right? >> reporter: and their first game is on march 25th, dan. now, take a look, this is the new and improved kezar stadium. those red seats are from the old candlestick park. this is the new home of the san francisco deltas. be still by beating heart. professional soccer has officially arrived in san francisco. they call themselves the san francisco deltas, with 22 signed players from around the world. >> i think san francisco has a lot of potential for soccer.

the community is really excited so far. >> reporter: the team is a member of the north american soccer league, a level below the major league soccer division. while the deltas have many people behind them, not everyone in the community welcomed them with open arms. last march, some expressed their concerns about traffic and having the team at kezar stadium where beer and wine will be served. >> 6,000 cars does not work. >> reporter: but the team was allowed to play at kezar following a plan to spend nearly $1 million to improve the stadium. the city liked that the team will play only 18 home games a season. the rest of the time, kezar will be used by the san francisco recreation and park department. no tax dollars were spent. the deltas are now focused on winning over the community. >> over a third of our stadium is going to be priced under $20, giving away 200 tickets for community groups and nonprofit groups per game. >> we exist but we don't exist yet because we haven't played official games yet, but we want to focus a lot on building and

growing within the community. >> reporter: sully mohammed is the only local player. he grew up in richmond, where soccer was not the sport of choice for many kids. >> i think it's a really good opportunity for a lot of the minority kids to kind of see a different sport that reaches globally. >> reporter: the team says it wants to be the inspiration for the next generation of players. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. marissa mayer's days are numbered as yahoo!'s ceo but she won't be leaving mempty-handed. mayer will receive a $23 million severance package after yahoo!'s sale to verizon is completed and she leaves the company most likely in june. in all mayer made more than $150 million in salary and stock since joining yahoo! in 2012. when the deal closes, what's left of the company will be renamed altaba and will be

headed by 52-year-old tom mcinerney. he will receive $2 million in salary. radio shack is offering huge discounts at all its stores right now as it prepares to close 187 stores nationwide. stores like this one on san francisco's market street has signs reading "everything must go." radio shack has filed for bankruptcy for the second time in two years. it closed 2400 stores in 2015. 11 more in the bay area will close for good tonight, including stores in oakland, leandro and martinez. customers are taking advantage of the closeout deals. >> i want it to get something for my stereo. it's pretty cool that they have all these discounts and stuff. i might check it out a little later on, come back and see what else they have. >> about 1800 employees will lose their jobs. radio shack will also stop operating in 360 other stores it shared with sprint. oakland's pandora music is outlining details of its much-anticipated on demand service. for $9.99 a month, subscribers

will have access to the expansive music library. you can download songs to listen offline. they hope it will signal a new turn-around for the company, which announced it was laying off part of its workforce earlier this year. demolition is under way for an important bridge along the central california coastline. it has always been a lifeline for the big sur community. >> kristen sze is here with the latest. >> well, if you've ever driven on highway 1 to beautiful big sur and, yes, these are chamber of commerce pictures, then you've been on the pfifer canyon bridge. its destruction is now under way. caltrans crews removed the railings this morning and a crane with a giant wrecking ball went to work this afternoon. the demolition is the first step to restoring access to the big sur community. the small coastal gem has been cut off from the rest of the world, relying on helicopter air drops for supplies since the bridge was shut down a month ago

when engineers noticed buckling and feared that the bridge may collapse into the canyon. >> right now we're anticipating about a day's worth of work to remove the bridge and probably another day to remove the columns. once the bridge is in the canyon, probably several weeks to remove all the pieces that are don below. >> for now a 63-mile stretch of highway 1 is disclosed from pmonterey county to ragged poin in san luis obispo county. it will take nine to ten months to complete the replacement bridge. mean tile big sur tourism will huge hit. take a look at that beautiful inn. the state park and big sur businesses all remain closed heading into the busy tourism season. dan and ama. >> thank you, kristen. well, there was a headache for drivers on the peninsula this morning. chp says several large potholes damaged at least a dozen cars on northbound 101 in palo alto

in antioch. right now a hazmat crew is working to clean up several mercury spills. crews responded this morning to a single spill underneath a motorcycle trailer. during the cleanup, they discovered about a half dozen more spills in the same area. right now manzanita way is closed to stop potential mercury contamination, however people are not being ordered to shelter in place. we'll stay on top of this breaking news. if you download our app and enable push alerts, you'll get updates immediately. here are the other stories making headlines at 4:30. concerns in milpitas after a serious crash was caught on camera. a kgo viewer wants to use this video to get a four-way stop sign installed outside her mother's home on kennedy drive. she said at least four vehicles have hit the house and there have been dozens of crashes at the intersection. in this crash she said one person was taken to the hospital. world news tweeted about the winter weather alerts in the midwest and east coast. the hardest-hit area could see up to 2 feet of snow.

thousands of flights have been cancelled. a packed house for a health care town hall. an estimated 2,000 people took part. coming up at 5:00, hear one emotional story from a young boy who said obamacare saved his life. today the nonpartisan congressional budget office revealed millions of americans would lose their health insurance if the republican health care bill replaces the affordable care act. and the white house offered an explanation as to why president trump accused former president obama of wiretapping his home. abc report city of neef ramos is live in washington with more. stephanie. >> reporter: ama, one out of the two reports expected today was released. you said it, the cbo results, which is supposed to give lawmakers and americans a clearer picture of the gop's health care replacement plan. the congressional budget office releases their estimate on the

impact of the gop health care bill. it says next year, 14 million more people would be uninsured under the legislation than under the affordable care act. 24 million people uninsured by 2026. earlier in the day, the white house downplayed the cbo's report. >> the last time they did this they were wildly off and the number keeps declining. >> reporter: and president trump is knocking obamacare again. >> '17 will be the worst year. i said it once, i'll say it again, because obama is gone. >> reporter: the president holding a listening session with a group who have had bad experiences with the affordable care act. trump says health care is going to get better because -- >> we're going to be working to unleash the power of the private marketplace to let insurers come in and compete for your business, and you'll see rates go down, down, down, and you'll see plans go up, up, up. >> reporter: but there's a highly anticipated report expected today, proof to back up trump's bombshell claims that president obama had trump tower wiretapped. top lawmakers on the house intelligence committee have

given the justice committee until today to do just that. the white house offering another explanation for the president's tweet. >> he doesn't really think president obama went up and tapped his phone personally. the president used the word "wiretap" in quotes to mean surveillance and other activities during that. >> reporter: this is really the first time the white house has given some sort of explanation as to what president trump meant when sending out those tweets. dan and ama. >> stephanie, going back to the cbo, congressional budget office results, what's the reaction on capitol hill to it? >> reporter: well, those results have really sent shock waves through capitol hill. some republicans and democrats saying that this bill just won't work. we heard from senator minority leader chuck schumer who said trumpcare would be a nightmare for the american people. on the other hand you have the health and human services secretary who says he's not bying it. he totally disagrees with this

report. >> stephanie ramos reporting, thank you. a milpitas man charged with jumping the white house fence will be allowed to remain free while awaiting trial. a judge ordered 26-year-old jonathan tran to stay within 100 miles of his hometown except while traveling to court in washington, d.c. he must wear a gps monitor and undergo a mental health evaluation. tran faces up to ten years in prison on charges of entering restricted grounds while carrying a dangerous weapon. authorities say tran was carrying two cans of mace. police in orange, california, have yet to release the identity of a man shot and killed by an officer following a traffic stop last night. warning, some might find this disturbing. a 35-year-old man held officers at bay for several minutes with a lit cigarette and can of gasoline. officers stuck up from behind, broke the passenger's side window and doused the man with water from a fire hose.

chaos when the man bolted to the back of the van and then chaos when officers tried to break the windows. you might have heard the officer yell "knife" and the gunshots fired by one officer. the man died later at the hospital. police found two knives at the scene and the investigation is ongoing. the case that sparked protests around the country is back in the spotlight. previously unreleased surveillance video that shows michael brown hours before he was shot by a police officer could shed some new light on that shooting. >> reporter: overnight, more protests in ferguson, missouri, sparked by this new surveillance video from the same store where this 2014, police said michael brown committed a strong armed robbery. the new video, part of a document carry called "stranger

fruit" debuted at a texas film festival. >> they wanted us to think michael rocked the store because they wanted us to think michael was aggressive. >> reporter: the people suggested brown and the people working at the store exchanged a box of cigarillos for drugs. the filmmaker, who discovered the video, says it's recorded nearly 11 hours before brown returned to the store. brown's uncle says police lied about his nephew. >> the picture they painted of my nephew was not right. >> reporter: when michael brown was shot and killed by officer darren wilson in 2014, this was the video police shared days after the shooting. brown is seen with his hands around a shop keeper's neck as he leaves with a carton of cigarillos. police saying he used the same level of aggression with officer wilson. today the st. louis county prosecutor saying the documentary isn't new, it's edited and there was no exchange of drugs for goods. >> there was clearly an attempt to distort this and turn it into

something it isn't. >> reporter: the documentary suggests brown argued with the clerk to get his things back. legal experts say while this video is important in terms of the big picture of what happened that evening, it is not relevant to what happened later between darren wilson and michael brown. another chapter is now closed in the jerry sandusky child molestation case. today former penn state athletic director tim kerley and exuniversity vice president gary schultz pleaded guilty to misdemeanor child endangerment charges. the pleas center around how the administrators handled a 2001 complaint alleging that sandusky was seen sexually abusing a boy in a team shower. kerley and schultz never reported it to the police and now faces five years in prison. sandusky was convicted of sexually abusing ten boys and is serving a 30 to 60-year prison term. a vehicle into a house is usually a recipe for disaster but this is a little different. watch as the driver -- here it goes. this suv loses control, runs off

we are watching a huge weather system that's already bringing air travel to a halt across the nation and affecting us right here in the bay area. more than 60 million people in the midwest, northeast and southeast are preparing for a huge storm. maggie ruley has more from new york. >> reporter: the midwest is getting blanketed in snow. >> last week it was in the 60s. now we've got snow on the ground. >> reporter: but a puppy play day for some is causing

treacherous conditions for others. >> every report we've had on this is it's going to snow hard and fast for a long period of time. it will create whiteout conditions. >> reporter: with blizzard warnings across the midwest and northeast, meaning snow falling at a blistering rate, 2 to 4 inches an hour. add to that expected wind speeds of 35 to 50 miles per hour, creating visibility at less than a quarter of a mile. and we have a messy and dangerous mix. airlines are proactively cancelling thousands of flights across the country as more than 60 million people stand in the path of some seriously nasty weather. >> we've seen a very consistent pattern so far with some storm. this should know a very serious blizzard. one everyone should take seriously. >> reporter: developing now, a low-pressure system in the southeast will combine with the storm that's been pummelling the midwest, converging into one massive nor'easter that could drop up to two feet of snow in some areas. here in new york, officials are acting fast, cancelling all

public schools tomorrow, preparing for the worst. some airlines have already grounded all flights. the weather also posed problems for cyclists in south africa. winds topped more than 60 miles an hour, stopping racers dead in their tracks, even knocking some of them off the event in capetown yesterday. look at this. cyclists struggled to carry their bikes, let alone ride them. one was blown around like a piece of paper. witnesses say other items were flying around, from cell phones to porta-potties. in the ending, though, the event was called off, understandably. >> we've made a change. as you can tell, kristen sze is here. ama was not feeling well, a little under the weather today. so she decided better to take off so you'll take over. >> feel better, ama, happy to fill in for a little bit. we were looking at the cycling video thinking wow, in dramatic contrast, we have gorgeous riding weather. >> it's nice, spencer.

>> it is a beautiful day and we have another beautiful day coming our way tomorrow. live doppler 7 hd shows no clouds in the sky at all. on the other side of the country, blizzard warnings in effect from new york up to boston and beyond. in fact a winter storm is going to pound the entire northeastern quadrant of the country, including as far south as washington, d.c. we expect snow totals to be up to about 2 feet at scranton, pennsylvania, about a foot in new york city and about 20 inches at hartford, connecticut. this is going to be a major, major storm. meanwhile back here tomorrow a day much like today, with high temperatures inland in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees. there will be more fog at the coast so although it's pretty mild at the coast, temperatures will be a little lower than they were today. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. we have a lovely day coming our way tomorrow and it's going to be very nice wednesday as well. a little cooler, a few more clouds on wednesday. there's a slight chance of showers late wednesday night into early thursday morning.

>> oh, well, baby and mom were both transported to walnut creek and hospital officials tell us both mom and baby are doing just fine today. california lawmakers want to help more college students graduate debt-free. assembly democrats unveiled the degrees not debt spending plan today that would help with tuition and living expenses. an estimated 390,000 uc and cal state students whose families earn less than -- it would allow students to attend the first year of community college for free. >> this budget year is tight. the next budget year looks better. hopefully we can implement this and gradually increase the supplemental grants to gradually decrease the amount of debt these students are taking. >> the plan would cost about $1.6 billion a year once it's fully implemented. the costs may be an issue for governor brown. san francisco mayor ed lee supported the plan with a tweet saying like our free ccsf

program, the degree not debt proposal would remove cost barriers for students attending college. time for ask finney. michael finney is here answering your questions sent to him via facebook, twitter and e-mail. the first one goes back to the story dan just read talking about free college. alicia asked why is city college free only to san francisco residents? >> it turns out it's a very fair deal. san francisco residents voted in a real estate tax on themselves that passed last year's election. the money funding this program comes from san francisco taxpayers and they want it to be used for san francisco students. makes sense. so only students living in the city for at least a year will get the free tuition from city college. pretty low bar actually. by the way, that all begins this upcoming fall semester. great idea. look, when i went to community college in this state, $7 a quarter. >> along with 10-cent ice creams. >> it's back, though.
