this is abc 7 news. >> roughly 18 million people being affected by this winter storm. under a state of emergency. a look at central park this morning where more than three inches of snow has already fallen. some taking advantage of the snow day. new york could get almost two feet of snow today. i'm natasha sioux bessing. crystal will be in later today. the late winter snowstorm comes less than a week before the official start of spring. an army of trucks is out right now trying to clear the roads. it is a slippery mess out there. snow has turned to sleet in some places.

it's not let up. six states remain under a state of emergency. let's get over to abc news reporter elizabeth hur. good morning, elizabeth. >> reporter: now a mix of snow and sleet. officials say that is good news to an extent but they're still concerned and for a good reason. blizzard warnings now canceled for all major cities along the i-95 corridor with the storm shifting more inland, but the danger along the coast, not over yet with winds topping at least 50 miles an hour. >> we are still concerned about coastal flooding. >> from pennsylvania to maine, millions did wake up to whiteout conditions. the morning commute treacherous. >> that was almost a wipeout. >> reporter: cars spinning out despite snowplows out in force. >> i'm very worried. it is bad. >> it's nasty out here. >> reporter: trying to keep up with mother nature. >> it's actually easier to move

snow than it is to move ice, obviously. so we're watching the weather. >> reporter: falling temperatures creating new concerns, prompting some travel restrictions in new york and a statewide travel ban remaining in effect in connecticut. >> this is new england. we're used to handling snow. when you get predictions of 18 to 30 inches with potentially four or five, six-inch snowfalls in an hour, that's when you have to act. >> reporter: the monster storm also wreaking havoc for air travelers, grounding thousands of flights with major airlines, american, southwest and united canceling all flights in and out of new york city for the day, leaving empty gates and a ghost town of an airport in d.c. the storm's impact doesn't end there. amtrak also canceled their high-speed service between boston and new york city. schools in at least nine states are closed today. i'm elizabeth hur live in new

york, abc news. back to you. >> elizabeth, thank you. mike nicco tracking the path of the storm. we saw changes early on. what's in store now. >> the rain-snow line so hard to forecast, especially so close to the coast where the marine influence is so great like it is here in the bay area. the pink is the rain and snow line. that's hitting new york, bridgeport, hartford and providence. that will my greigrate further e north. this is bringing all snow to washington and baltimore. they're only going to get a couple of more inches. new york still possibly going to get 12. that's going to be widespread up to the north. less than that towards the coast. look where all the heavy snow is going to fall on the ski resorts. up to three feats in the mountains if they can get there. >> appreciate the update, mike. thank you. we are certainly feeling the impact at our bay area airports. there are some lucky passengers who are getting out to the east coast today.

abc 7's jessica castro live at sfo for us. >> reporter: hi natasha. when i got out here around 8:00 a.m., thiengs were eerily quiet. it seems like folks are getting the memo if their flights are canceled and simply not bothering to come out to the airport. we did find a few stranded passengers and a few lucky folks who seem to have that golden ticket back home. >> the east coast storm causing a storm of panic for travellers, even here on the west coast. >> i want to get home. i miss my family. >> reporter: more than 100 flights canceled into or out of sfo today due to the bad weather out east. what's more, finding a place to wait is proving to be a challenge with so many travelers spending an extra day in the bay area. >> very difficult to get hotels because all of them of

>> reporter: this man says his new york flight is canceled for at least a day. >> i would be staying for tonight and coming back tomorrow morning to catch the flight. >> reporter: we found some lucky people whose american airlines flight to philadelphia still scheduled after being canceled yesterday. >> is your flight canceled? >> yesterday it was canceled. we're flying today. >> very lucky today, absolutely. >> reporter: at least they have sunshine while they wait. >> it's phenomenal. i hear it's been a great weekend. i was fortunate to enjoy your beautiful weather. >> are you sure you don't want to spend one more day sm. >> well, if you twist my arm, i might. >> good luck getting home. >> reporter: believe it or not, at one point this morning i actually counted only two people in the security checkpoint line. so if you do have a flight and it's still scheduled for today, it should be pretty easy to get to your gate. reporting from sfo, jessica

castro, abc 7 news. >> we're happy to share our weather with them. thank you very much. from travel trouble to the changing forecast, we'll keep you up to date on everything you need on the abc 7 news app. make sure to enable push alerts so we'll send the latest information straight to your phone. in the east bay now, developing news on a homicide investigation after reports of a fight in the street. police find a trail of blood leading into a body inside a home. now the search for the suspect is on. deputies say they know who they're looking for. amy hollyfield live in alameda county for us. >> reporter: crime scene investigators are describing this crime scene as elaborate. that's why they're still here. about 21 hours after the murder happened. they think they still have a couple more hours to go. they do this i they know who did this. they think the victim knew his killer. neighbors say the man who lives in this san leandro home has been here for decades, but the activity at his home has

recently changed. >> i guess he let his kids move in. all we know is there's been a lot of people coming and going from that house. >> reporter: someone called the sheriff's office yesterday afternoon when a fight broke out in front of the home. investigators arrived and followed a trail of blood from the street to inside the home where they found a 41-year-old man who had been killed. they believe he lived here along with others who were involved in the fight. >> it appears these people knew each other, that the motive here is obviously an argument of some sort between parties that knew each other. so we have identified a suspect and we are now after that suspect trying to get them into custody. >> very surprised. good neighborhood. we haven't had problems like this before. >> reporter: some neighbors are on edge on selbourne street. officers want to assure them they don't think it was a random attack. >> there is an element of drug usage connected to people at this residence. we're looking into that as a

motive. but at this time we don't know. >> reporter: an autopsy is under way right now. investigators couldn't tell by looking at the victim how he had died. they say they have interviewed all of the people mo were here at the time of the fight, so everyone is accounted for except for the man who they believe did this. live in san leandro, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. new this morning, a naked intoxicated man in napa who told fire personnel he was looking for a wishing well was rescued after he fell into a hollow vent shaft at a togo's. firefighters responded to the call at 8:30. construction workers let firefighters to a place where they heard a voice calling for help. firefighters opened up the shaft and found a man in the fetal position. you could see the broken door in the center of your screen there. a man had gotten onto the roof overnight and opened a door panel that led to the open shaft. he is hospitalized now in ung known condition. new details out of antioch. moments ago hazmat personnel

. welcome back. the snow coming down in washington stalling more than just the traffic. members of the house of representatives are taking a snow day, canceling a hearing on the republican health care plan. the non-partisan congressional budget office estimates the plan to repeal and replace obamacare

would leave 14 million more americans without insurance next year. within a decade, that number grows by 24 million. the president not backing down, saying the house republican plan is just the first offer. >> negotiating with everybody. it's a deep, fat, beautiful negotiation. >> for democrats there is nothing encouraging about this. senate minority leader chuck schumer says trumpcare would be a nightmare for the american meme. how would the republican proposal help californians who help to buy insurance. "the sacramento bee" found nationwide republican tax credits are tied to age, starting at $2,000 per year for people under 30, increasing to $4,000 for those over 60. if you're 60 years old and making $40,000 a year, you would receive nearly $13,000 in subsidies to buy insurance on the exchange for 2017.

according to the bee, it would cut it to $4,000 based purely on your age. gavin newsom is drafting a health care plan for california seen as a way to separate himself from other candidates in the 2018 race for governor. according to "the sacramento bee," knew some says it will be based on healthy san francisco, a universal health care program he signed into law as mayor of san francisco. up next on abc 7 news, another step towards recovery. the actions san jose is taking today in the week of this season's historic flooding. silicon valley leaders headed to our nation's capital, the challenges they're trying to tackle with the trump administration. a live look outside at the golden gate bridge, looking beautiful under blue skies. meteorologist mike nicco coming up with the forecast.

welcome back. want to bring you this heart stopping new video out of israel, fireworks exploding in the middle of a touring inferno of fire. this is the scene at a warehouse where fireworks are stored. it went up in flames earlier this morning and set off several explosions. one person died. several were hurt and one person still remains missing right now. firefighters still trying to figure out what exactly caused that fire. more jaw dropping video out of seattle. this gas bump bursting into a

ball of flames after an suv goes airborne slamming into it. surveillance video captured the scene last night. police say the suv was racing away from a nearby intersection after clipping a car and pushing it off the road. that car hit a tree and split in half, critically injuring one person inside. witnesses say the suv narrowly missed two gas bumps before slamming into the one in the middle. amazingly the two people inside were not seriously hurt. police investigated one of them. they're investigating whether the diver was either drunk or high. happening today here at home, another move to help san jose residents affected by all the recent flooding. this afternoon council members will declare the city has a shelter crisis. that will clear the way for the city to designate the seven trees community center as a temporary shelter for victims. today's declaration will give the city's housing director the authority to turn the other building into shelter. you have a chance to step

outside, you'll want to take it. gorgeous from our east bay hills camera. now we want to know, another warm one perhaps on the way? when is the rain coming back, mike? >> that's a good question. there's not really a great chance until next week when the pattern changes a little bit. we've still got the chance tomorrow night in the north bay. it's clear to the coast. that's ocean beach from mt. tam el pious. you'll definitely need the sunglasses. navigating fog the next couple mornings. that's when you know the cooler afternoons will follow. monday looking a little wetter. here is a look at the blocking area of high pressure pushing the storm well up into the pacific northwest into canada, grabbing the cold air, grabs the moisture and brings it to the northeast. that's why you have the nor'easter developing. back at home, 67 at half moon bay, 73 to about 77 around the bay, about 77 to 82 in our

inland neighborhoods with wlifr moore, 82 being in the warm spot. look at the wind. there you go. see the flag. that's blowing offshore. any time we get that, a clear coast and pretty warm temperatures. watch the pollen if you're doing yard work. if you're going on the water, small waves. round off your activity planner with a little exercise. remember the sun is strong this time of year. let's take a look at what's going on as far as our temperatures. notice the coast doesn't get as warm as everybody else because of the sea breeze. clouds in the evening hours. 73 to 77 around the bay. still in the 70s at 6:00. mid 60s if you're heading out at 8:00. here is a look at the coast and all the marine layer fog that's going to develop as we head into the evening hours. it pushes into most of our neighborhoods. fog if you're heading into the central valley. the area least likely to have some fog will be our inland east bay valleys. even here we may have patches. temperatures a little cooler tonight. most of us were in the 40s and

50s this morning, upper 40s to upper 50s. mid 40s to low 50s. may have to dress just a little wrmer. let's jump ahead to tomorrow. the north bay has the best chance of seeing what little rain there is out of this system. look at that. the clouds starting to increase and by 5:00 you see just getting near santa rosa some light rain. by midnight, the chance is almost over. you can see the cold front starting to sweep down, kicking off clouds. most of us will wake up dry thursday. through the evening commute, 7:00, nothing measurable in the north bay. we'll get a couple of hundreds. here is my accuweather seven-day forecast. cooler for all of us tomorrow. a nice rebound thursday. saint patrick's day the warmest after today. a little cooler as we head through the weekend with our best chance of weather, probably monday and tuesday of next week. >> loving this weather. time for your morning money report. the nation's largest retailer is boosting hiring in the bay area so it can compete with amazon. walmart plans to hire hundreds

of workers for its tech operations in san bruno and sunnyvale. that's according to the bay area news group. walmart's goal is to offer two-day shipping for online orders, a direct challenge to m amazon prime. prime service costs 99 bucks a year, walmart service will be free. apple may be rolling out a new version of the ipad. tech crunch reports several new models have been spotted being tested in cupertino. a leaked investor note says apple plans to update the largest ipad pro model, and also a ten-inch model with a narrower screen that will be more budget friendly. officials in apple joining san jose mayor sam la car dough and 80 other silicon valley executives in washington, d.c. it happens every year. with the new administration in place local leaders say they have their work cut out for them. they tell the mercury news there is a lot on the table from

coming up on abc 7 news at 4:00, the city of oakland taking a stand against president trump's border wall. what can be an affordable way to buy the new tv. investigating whether leasing to own is a good idea on abc 7 news at 5:00. apparently there's demand fr jeans that show off your kneecap. at least the folks at nordstrom think so. the department store chain selling clear knee mom jeans. on the website, they're made by top shop. they see the jeans have a futuristic feel. it's not clear how many people have actually bought these at $95, but the reviews right now really funny. one mom saying i've always loved my knee caps, one saying perfect for my slip and slide. another saying my kids love when i show up to school on that. >> on the hot day i don't want to see the condensation on the
