spies, stole the personal information of millions of yahoo! users. it was the second largest online breach in history. good evening, thanks for joining us, i'm kristen sze. >> and i'm dan ashley. the fbi's san francisco office has been looking into this case for two years now. it seems the hackers were targeting certain individuals. abc 7 news reporter vic lee is in the newsroom with the latest on the story. vic. >> this indictment says those four are being charged with conspiracy to commit computer fraud, economic espionage, theft and other related counts. now, the fbi says this was a cyber breach directed by russian intelligence agents using cyber mercenaries, and they say the indictment is unprecedented. the indictment charges the two members of the fsb hired two criminal hackers to break into yahoo!'s database. >> it is the first time the fbi

has indicted russian fsb officers for committing criminal cyber intrusions. >> the fsb, russia's federal security service, which replaced the notorious kgb, an arm of its military, an intelligence-gathering agency. it says they stole information on more than 500 million yahoo! user accounts in a massive hacking attack in 2014. the fbi says they were able to do that in part by spearfishing, sending fraudulent e-mails to extract data from users. >> gift cards, credit cards, trying to reset user accounts. all the stuff that goes along with that. >> the indictment says they accessed accounts of russian journalists and politicians critical of the russian government as well as u.s. government officials and even white house personnel. one was arrested in canada yesterday. the fbi says the other three are in russia. it will be hard getting them. mary mccord, head of national security at the justice

department. >> we do not have an extradition treaty with russia. we would hope that they would respect our criminal justice system and respect these charges and what they need to do. >> fbi special agent john bennett, who heads the san francisco office, said it more bluntly. >> the fbi has a long reach and a longer memory. >> put another way, the world is getting smaller. the fbi's reach, longer. vic lee, abc 7 news. >> yahoo!'s ceo, marissa mayer, tweeted very grateful to the fbi and doj for bringing to justice the russian officials and hackers who led the attack on yahoo!. >> mayer was recently rebuked by their board for her role in the hack attack. her compensation package was slar slashed by $12 million. she is resigning after the merger with verizon is complete. yahoo! suffered an even larger hack attack in 2013. however, the company says it's

learned very little about that attack. the department of justice did not say anything today about the russian involvement in this incident. today's announcement has the tech community buzzing. janine della vega spoke with spoke with analysts and security experts about the implications. she joins us live from san jose. you say the buzz word today was trust? >> reporter: yeah, as consumers we put our trust in companies that protect our information. what happened in the yahoo! case has prompted a shift in the way that companies look at cyber security. math geniuses and hackers work side by side inside vectra networks. the ceo is hypervigilant into making sure what happened to yahoo! doesn't happen to his customers. >> had yahoo! taken the notion of breaches very seriously, then i think they would not be in this position. this is a signal to other enterprise customers of the same size that breaches are an

everyday event. >> reporter: tech insiders say the yahoo! hack has made companies more proactive in investing in infrastructure but it's still lacking. consumers are watching. we talked to shoppers about the latest news regarding the hack. >> when you hear that, definitely you don't want to go that route. i google a lot and so, yeah, i use other sites. >> you don't use e-mail anymore? >> no. sorry yahoo!. >> so you as a consumer now will look at this and say i need to shut my accounts down on yahoo! and just won't do anything with it. verizon is about to buy yahoo!. are you worried about the implications of the customer base there? >> reporter: tech analysts say yahoo!'s customer base has been loyal and has seen consistent traffic on its website, but those who were affected in the hack should take note, even if they change their user name and password back then, their information is still out there and could be used if they use the same information to log in

on other sites. >> we sent out a push alert to watch the fbi news conference on our app. stay on top of breaking news where you live. download the abc 7 news app and enable push alerts to get updates as they happen. tonight a federal judge in hawaii has temporarily blocked key portions of purchaser's new travel ban which was set to take effect at midnight eastern time. that ban would have temporarily stopped the u.s. refugee program and travel from six muslim majority countries. the trump administration took over a month to rewrite the order after multiple federal courts blocked its implementation. in part of his ruling tonight, judge derek wattson cited questionable national security evidence as part of his rationale to grant the restaining order. he also did not accept the argument that statements by mr. trump on the campaign about banning muslims should be disregarded. these plainly worded statements made in the months leading up to the executive order and in many cases made by the executive

himself betray the executive order's stated secular purpose. the white house has not issued an official statement. press secretary sean spicer says they are reviewing the judge's order. an iranian computer science student at cal is caught up in president trump's travel order and has set up a go fund me account to try to get financial help. he has been accepted to berkeley's summer program in quantum computing. however, because of the president's executive order, he's not allowed to work at cal to try to pay his own pay. and as a nonu.s. citizen, he's not not eligible for school funding. his appeal is working. his fund is already over $5,000 more than what he needs. now, any company hoping to help construct president trump's proposed border wall should not plan to do any work in berkeley. last night the city council voted unanimously to divest from any company that involves itself with the wall. this includes not just the contractors who build the proposed divider, but any company that designs, finances

or works in any way on the project. berkeley is the first city in the country to pass such a law. authorities investigating a possible anti-semitic hate crime at uc hastings law school in san francisco have new information. on monday a student living at mcallister tower discovered that a jewish symbol on his front door had been set on fire. the chancellor sent out a letter today to students, faculty and staff condemning what happened. >> it's important that everyone knows that we value diversity andin cluesivity and we want this to be a campus where people are safe, whether you're studying or working here. >> the symbol that was set on fire is known as the mesutah which contains a scroll of hebrie versus from the torah. it's commonly placed on door frames by people of the jewish faith. the university of california has been plagued with dozens of cases of sexual misconduct

across its ten campuses. today the uc regions voted to amend the code of conduct which applies specifically to faculty. lyanne melendez explains. >> reporter: preventing sexual violence and harassment has always been a uc policy, but it hasn't always been clear to a few administrators. this uc regents committee voted to amend this faculty code of conduct, which now spells it out clearly with language that is easy to understand. >> the language was not clear to all readers. >> got it. >> so now you spelled it out for them. >> yes. >> the chancellor has to file charges within three years of learning of the complaint, and there is no time limit on when a person can report an alleged violation. >> it can be three, five, ten years later. >> reporter: leslie levy represents a uc berkeley employee who filed a lawsuit against the dean of the law school for sexual harassment. she supports having no time limits. >> when the person who harassed

them no longer has the power over them, then they feel their freedom to come forward. >> reporter: janet napolitano called for stronger tense in sexual harassment cases when it came to faculty. a task force appointed by napolitano came up with recommendations on how to prevent and respond to these violations. lieutenant governor gavin newsom was present during today's vote. >> it seems there was a level of tolerance, which was outrageous. frankly i still question the lack of accountability on some of that. and it's on all of us. >> reporter: today's vote comes after the university released documents showing that more than 100 employees have been disciplined throughout the uc system in the last three years. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> uc regents are tackling a bunch of hot button issues. the rising cost of attendance and the campus housing squeeze.

a chunk of land in the hills between moraga and oakland will soon link a vast new network of hiking trails come fall. it's about two-thirds the size of golden gate park. leslie brinkley is there live with more on these plans. leslie? >> reporter: this is a conservation story with a happy ending here in the east bay. now look at this view behind me, these green hills. it's quite a pan ramma. these hills were off limits. now this fall hundreds and hundreds of acres will become accessible to the public for the very first time for a $10 watershed access fee. the wildflowers are in bloom. you can hear the frogs and wild turkeys in the distance. there are cattle and horses grazing on this land.

this was carr ranch. now it's owned by east bay mud and will be managed by a trust in a conservation deal that costs $7 million but is expected to pay off in many ways. >> it's rare that we get an opportunity to purchase land to protect our local water supplies. >> reporter: if the land were developed, it would have disrupted water quality for alameda county. instead -- >> it's a puzzle piece that fits in. we surround the land on three sides basically. >> our goal is to open this property to public recreation in fall 2017. the trails will provide access for hikers, for equestrians, for dog walking on leash, for wildlife viewing. >> reporter: the new trails on the 604-acre parcel will eventually connect to other park districts like redwood and less trumpus. a big win for conservationists to protect the wildlife and create new open space access. in the hills above moraga, i'm

leslie brinkley, abc 7 news. an angry board of supervisors denied a request by a landfill company for more time to get rid of construction waste at its site. sky 7 was over the landfill showing the pieces of scrap lumber and broken concrete that litter the ground. in yesterday's meeting supervisors noted that the landfill company had not complied with rules from two years ago calling for the waste to be recycled. the company now has one week to get rid of the waste. a group of blue star moms in the east bay began an ambitious project today to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country. abc 7 news was at berean christian high school in concord for an emotional ceremony. the occasion was the unveiling of a granite memorial in honor of a graduate who died in iraq. his mom understandably was overwhelmed. >> it means so much because it just means that his -- he will never be forgotten, that there's

a remembrance here and a reminder for every child, every student that comes through here for the rest of their lives. he won't be forgotten. >> he will not. ben was killed in an ambush in 2008. the blue star moms of concord plan to place memorials for 17 fallen warriors at 12 high schools attended by those fallen service members. it can come as a shock when a pharmaceutical company suddenly raises drug prices. >> now a bill in sacramento would force companies to warn us before that actually happens. >> michael finney is here now with more on that. >> this is not the first time they have talked about this. this time it may actually come true. we've heard plenty of outrage over skyrocketing drug prices, like the epipen jumping from $57 ten years ago to $500 today. now a bill in the state senate would force drug companies to give notice before raising prices more than 10%. the alerts would go to wholesale buyers like insurance companies,

pharmacies and public health agencies. a similar bill was dropped last year after sponsors said amendments made it too weak. the latest effort comes after voters rejected prop 61 which would have capped drug prices. the battery charger for xbox 1 is being recalled tonight. it might catch on fire. energize er battery is recallin more than 120,000 smart chargers used to charge up the xbox controllers. the chargers can overheat, damaging the controller and possibly burning its users. the company has 24 reports of overheating chargers but no injuries. owners can return the chargers for a full refund. i've posted the information you need on my facebook page. which part of your house is the dirtiest? now your smartphone can tell you, at least if you use roomba. the new version of roomba vacuum cleaners can tell you where it found the most dirt in your house. the information will be reported

the company will launch an air force gps satellite on a falcon 9 rocket in 2019. a huge chicken is set to take over part of san francisco next month as part of a mass movement to get president trump to release his taxes. check out this thing. a 30-foot stall chicken, created to resemble mr. trump, will be part of a rally april 15th at san francisco city hall. the local organizer says the chicken mascot is already a success. when activists used the balloon at a fund-raiser, they raised their goal amount in less than an hour. >> it was almost like proof of concept for whether or not people would see this as a good idea. this symbol of donald trump is a chicken for not releasing his taxes. like what is he hiding? >> the chicken is part of a national movement. tax marches are set to take place in more than 50 cities. hi there, everyone. time to bring out those umbrellas and get ready for a rainy pattern to unfold.

on our storm impact scale we have 1s every single day beginning on saturday, continuing right on through wednesday and even beyond that. so we are going to go back to winter. live doppler 7 right now showing you some light returns pushing northeast of the bay area. we did have some light showers and sprinkles in the north bay earlier today as a weak system is passing through. temperatures dropped. it was a dramatic difference. 19 degrees cooler right now compared to 24 hours ago in santa rosa, and you can feel it outside. part of the reason is the fog, the cloud cover from our emeryville camera. you can see both of those. a pretty picture there and temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s. places like san francisco, san jose, but we are in the middle 60s in gilroy, 55 in half moon bay. take a look at this beautiful view. a little window with the sun showing up through the high clouds and the fog. i love this picture. here's a look at those temperatures. low 60s to mid-60s for most of you except livermore is 67 degrees. highs so far today upper 50s to the low 70s.

like i said yesterday, we didn't have any 80s. clouds are stacked up and here's a look at what's ahead. isolated showers in the north bay. warming up for st. patrick's day and a rainy pattern is setting up saturday through wednesday. here's the hour-by-hour look. 6:00 tonight there may still be some showers in the north bay going into 7:00 p.m. but i do want to tell you most of this is not actually heavy rain. it's a light shower or sprinkle, the splash and dash type of variety continues until 8:00 p.m. and then it pretty much weakens. that falls apart and we're left with clouds and some fog. here's the hour-by-hour planner. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, 40s and 50s. we'll see peeks of sun by noon time and mostly sunny by 4:00 p.m. high clouds will be passing through. partly cloudy in the evening, 50s and 60s. tomorrow morning when you get going, you will have to look out for the fog. we'll have plenty of clouds around. temperatures will begin in the low to mid-50s and then for the afternoon you will see sunshine, but it will be filtered by high

5-year-olds who don't get enough sleep will likely have enough trouble paying attention, controlling their emotions and processing information by the age of 7. the data comes from a long-term project that has been studying kids for more thnan a decade. sleep recommendations vary but in general kids 3 to 4 years old need 11 hours a day, younger kids near more and older a little less. a school welcomed teens from half a world away today. >> all of us here are refugees. we live in a refugee camp. >> they came to richmond with a message on what life is like in those camps and performed a traditional palestinian dance. most of the teens who have lived their entire lives in a refugee camp near bethlehem have gotten a lot of attention as an all-girl hip-hop group which has just put out their first album. >> we rap in both english and arabic to get to both sides of the world, to get our message across maybe about women.
