hey, good morning to you. it's saturday, march 18. i'm cornell barnard in for chris nguyen and let's start with a quick look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning to you. >> hi there, cornell. good morning, hope you've been enjoying our spring-like conditions. lots of sunshine. temperatures have been well above average but live doppler 7 showing not only that we're not picking up on any rain, we've got a lot of clouds, startsing off pretty mild, 55 in hayward, 55 in san jose, temperatures as a result 4 to 6 degrees, even 8 degrees warmer than we were yesterday with our clear start so as we go through the day today, we will see some clouds around, even the possibility of a few showers in the north bay and we are bringing the rain chances back in the only for part of the weekend but significantly into next week.

so we'll talk about totals, timing, yes, spring arriving when we see you again in just a few minutes. breaking news this morning, firefighters battling a two-alarm fire in san francisco's chinatown. flames are burning on the third floor of a building on waverly place between sacramento and clay streets. firefighters say there is one possible victim. we will bring you updates on this story as they become available. more breaking news out of france. the country remains under a state of emergency after police shot and killed a man for allegedly trying to grab a solar's weapon at the orley airport. police say the soldier is part of a special force deployed around france to defend sensitive sites from terror attacks. police say the man also shot an officer at a traffic stop earlier then stole a woman's car at gunpoint. the anti-terrorism section of the paris prosecutors office is leading the investigation. the man's identity is not known at this time.

other injuries at the airport have been reported. a man is in critical condition this morning after police say he was naked and acting erratic and led them on a chaotic chase across the south bay. it started yesterday afternoon when officers responded to valerie drive and eva court in campbell and that's when the chase was on. it ended in san jose. katie marzullo was there. >> he raced down the road with about ten police officers behind him. >> reporter: this witness saw the police pursuit come to an end. what he heard next sent him ducking for cover behind his car. >> i heard a popping sound and then the officer -- i saw the officer firing into the vehicle. >> reporter: james saw said he heard 12 shots. this cell phone video was taken just after the shooting. san jose police say it started around 1:30 when they responded to 911 calls about a naked man. >> he was walking kind of agitated about something and then all of a sudden he just

took his clothes off. >> running in the yard, throwing stuff in the yard, picking it up, running back to his truck, which was parked in front, still naked. >> the women say he rents a room in a house on eva court and they don't really know him. they finally called police after another neighbor came home with her children. >> when running towards them, like charging the kids, naked, and these kids are, like, fourth grade so they're all screaming and crying. >> reporter: when police arrived, they say the man got in his truck, rammed a parked truck and a police consider before taking off. he got into an accident with another car and ultimately broke down at the safeway. that's where officers tried to take him into custody. >> during that encurrent, multiple officers fired at the suspect. he was struck at least once. >> reporter: police have not revealed if the man was armed. the santa clara district attorney's office is investigating. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc7 news. sky7 was over palo alto

where police say this suv slammed into a bicyclist, sending her to the hospital. our media partners at the east bay news group report police were trying to pull over the driver when that driver went the wrong way down a one-way street and ran over the woman on the bike. it happened yesterday afternoon about 3:30 on homer avenue near emerson street. police arrested two people after the crash. three other suspects, a man and two women, ran away and were eventually found hiding in a shed. the cyclist went to the hospital with major skrirz, including broken bones. she is talking, though, and is expected to recover. president trump has vowed to crack down on undocumented immigrants. now reuters is reporting that immigration judges are going to be moved around to target 12 specific cities, including san francisco. the goal would be to speed up the deportation of undocumented immigrants charged with crimes. abc7 news has

we will get to that story -- get back to that story in a moment. the secret service says a man from milpitas was illegally on the white house grounds for about 16 minutes, completely undetected. jonathan tran is accused of hopping over a fence at the treasure treasury department eight days ago, vaulting another fence around the white house and moving right up to the south portico. he didn't get inside and agents arrested him. secret service has tightened security and has interviewed more than 50 people to try to the get to the bottom of the breach. sales force ceo mark benioff visited the white house yesterday to discuss equal pay for women with president trump. after his meeting, he tweeted this photograph saying, thank you, ivanka, trump, for leading the charge. benioff has been a strong advocate for hiring more women in the tech industry.

relations between the united states and russia have been icy to say the least. know with the revelation that russian operatives were behind the yahoo cyber attack, the level of distrust has >> they are innocent until they are proven guilty in the court of law. >> reporter: that's the russian consul general responding to the fbi's announcement that the agency filed criminal charges against two russian intelligence agents and two hackers who were working for them. the fbi says they stole private information from millions of americans after hacking into half a billion yahoo accounts. >> let's not talk about them like criminals. >> reporter: the consul general in san francisco would go no further, not even to say whether russia would hand over the two intelligence agents if found guilty. he was adamant, though, that

russia has no influence in the november u.s. elections. >> as far as i know, my government approached the u.s. government requesting this evidence and we never received anything. >> reporter: he is cautiously optimistic that under president trump, the relationship between the two countries will improve. he insists that under president obama, things deteriorated. towards the end of his administration, mr. obama ordered the expulsion of some russian diplomats in the united states, including a few from the san francisco office. >> i wouldn't use word offended. i would use a word, disappointed. >> reporter: there is a large russian-speaking community in san francisco concerned about what's happening between the two countries. >> a lot of people protest in america. no, they don't know what the future. >> reporter: some fear there will be some animosity towards them. in san francisco lyanne

melendez, abc7 news. notice to authorities. that's what these new signs say. they've been posted at the entrance of dozens of san francisco buildings. they were put there by mission housing development corporation after immigration agents went looking for a person in one of their buildings last january. the notice tells officers they must get clearance from the corporate office before entering the property, even if they have a search warrant. >> it's not our intention to restrict or withhold any access to our buildings. it's merely our intention to protect our tenants to the maximum of our capacity. >> mission housing would verify each warrant with a lawyer. the agency runs 35 affordable housing buildings in the city. back to that story we wanted to bring you a few minutes ago. president trum has vowed to crack down on undocumented immigrants. now reuters reporting that immigration judges are going to be moved around to target 12 specific cities, including here in san francisco. the goal would be to speed up the deportation of undocumented immigrants charged with crimes.

abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the story. >> what the addition of more immigration judges means that many more people will get deported. >> reporter: according to figures from university of syracuse, in december, california had the highest number of pending deportation proceedings. but professor bill hing says more judges may not be the solution. >> the real problem is that, in my opinion, too many people are being put in deportation proceedings that don't need to be in deportation proceedings. >> reporter: hing says immigration and custom enforcement algts have broadened their interpretation of crimes, for example, driving without a license and agents have been more aggressive in other enforcement efforts. this week, even the chief justice of the california state courts wrote a letter to the u.s. attorney general and the secretary of homeland security, saying i.c.e. agents should not use california courthouses as bait to take immigrants into custody. these new strategies are

stirring fear in the community and some organizations are trying to manage those fears. >> they really create a great deal of panic and the panic is understandable but it doesn't correspond with reality. >> reporter: since donald trump took office, three bay area counties, including san francisco, have pledged to provide legal resources for immigrants. sergio quintana, abc7 news. alameda county prosecutors and the city of oakland feuding over the investigation into the tragic ghost ship fire. our media partner, the "east bay times," reports the d.a.'s office has been trying to get the critical report for the past month from the fire department and the city attorneys office. legal experts say the delay in handing over the report could violate the law. that's because if the report is submitted for review, a copy must be provided to the prosecutes agency for review. 36 people died of smoke inhalation in the december fire. investigators have not yet said what started that fire. in a story you'll see only on abc7 news, a former napa high

school student expelled over a hazing scandal fears the punishment will have severe effects on his life. yesterday, abc7 news was at the napa union school's headquarters where dozens of students marched in support of their peers. thursday night, the school board expelled two students for hazing. a third student had already been expelled. allen took honors classes in hopes of some day being a chemical engineer. in an exclusive interview, he said that dream and more may now be gone. >> i lost part of my life. i lost a big part of my life. i lost respect. i lost hope. i lost a lot in this past few months. >> prosecutors are considering criminal charges. thousands of san francisco students and parents in limbo this morning, waiting to find out where many students will go to school next fall. school assignment letters were scheduled to be mailed out yesterday. however, the mailings have been delayed.

the district told abc7 the staff is working around the clock to get the assignment letters ready to be sent out. looks like the honeymoon is over with our nice weather. >> about to end and in fact it's looking pretty active throughout the rest of the month and a live look outside right now but we have the weekend to contend with and that doesn't really look all that wet at all. 56 degrees in san francisco, little shaking there with winds kicking up out of the south but those are keeping us mild. we'll time out a very wet week ahead, which will bring some spring-like showers and more coming up. also next, it's an unheard of price in the red hot bay area real estate market. homes on sale for $1, what? true cost behind this bargain price. and losing your job is bad enough, of course, how the situation getting worse for some laid off sol

speeds up to 45 megs, for $30 a month. got some developing news out of the east bay this morning, all lanes are now open on southbound i-880 in san leandro after multiple cars were involved in a bad accident. the crash happened around 3:40 this morning near the marina boulevard onramp. four lanes were blocked for about an hour and a half. you can see one of the cars ended up on its roof. it's unclear how many people were hurt. chp tells us those who were injured have minor injuries and are expected to survive. we all know that the bay area real estate market is among the most expensive in the nation, so when abc7 news found two homes in oakland on sale right now for just $1 each, it caught our eye. but as you would expect, there is a catch.

abc7 news reporter leslie brinkley tells us about the true cost to own one of these homes. >> reporter: this little red house is for sale for $1. and next door, the greenhouse is also available for $1. developer lowe enterprises is planning to build 127 apartments on the property in brook street in oakland like these renderings. the catch is these victorian houses have to be relocated by april 30. the developer is offering these houses for $1 each in order to meet city requirements for relocating potentially historic promotes and time is money. and the reality is, getting all those permits and approvals by the end of april would be difficult, if not impossible. there are the logistics of moving the home that could cost $60,000 and involve moving power lines, tree limbs, and signal lights on the way to a new location and finding vacant land zoned residential nearby? >> you got to find land that's

going to be large enough to accommodate the home. then you got to make sure that land has the right government regulations that allows for a home to be placed there and you have to make sure that the neighbors are okay with it as well. >> reporter: that hasn't stopped the neighbors here from daydreaming. >> i would much rather live in a house like that than a brand-new building. >> i actually bought a lottery ticket the other day and i thought, if i win, i'll try to do it. >> reporter: they're only $1 each. in oakland, i'm leslie brinkley, abc7 news. workers for a bay area solar company who were just laid off got some more bad news. their final paychecks bounced. sungevity laid off 160,000 employees last smont month. some of those employees' last paychecks bounced. sungevity blamed it on confusion at its bank and is working to fix the problem. the company filed for bankruptcy four days after the layoffs. caltrans haas successfully destroyed a third of the

pfeiffer canyon bridge. crews shook the bridge back and forth with a chisel trying to get it to fall. it's been a month since the bridge has been closed after landslides damaged both support pillars and a bridge deck. earlier this week, caltrans tried using a wrecking ball but it wasn't really hitting the bridge with enough force. >> chiseling away in a very methodical, careful, safe way. we want this bridge to fall in the canyon the way that we want it, not in an uncontrolled way. >> the most important thing is not the cost or the speed in which the work is done. the most important thing is that the work is done safely. >> well, after the bridge is demolished, it could take as long as a year to rebuild good morning, everyone. saturday morning. it's milder, it's cloudier, and we will be looking at some changes over the weekend. they really involve more cloud cover, not much in the way of rainfall yet but it is to come. here's our wider perspective.

the only rain falling now across the state up in mount shasta and we could see a few sprinkles along the coast but temperatures lot low to upper 50s right now from danville, 51 in san ramon and dublin and the rest of the bay area, very mild, 54 san carlos, as well as mountain view, 56 in the city, santa rosa and napa. so your forecast highlights, cooler and cloudier this weekend, possible sprinkle, spotphy light showers through tomorrow but overall most of you won't see anything at all and we're saving the wet pattern for next week. it still looks spotty all week long but by friday, that looks like the most potent system so we'll time it out for you throughout the day today. notice we have a lot of sunshine still in the south bay, mix of clouds and sun in the east bay, and this is all through 10:00 tonight but you'll notice we begin to see a few returns around the north bay and that's why we could see a few spotty light showers. carbon copy again for the second half of your weekend so we add

the totals together through 8:00 tomorrow morning, tomorrow night, really not much at all. so the weekend just looks cloudier and cooler and as for temperatures, still above average. 70 today palo alto, 68 in oakland, san mateo, 67 in san rafael. then we bring in our storm impact scale. we have many 1s right on through the workweek but it's friday, i want to highlight. this is when the rain will get to be moderate to heavy with anywhere from 1 to 2 inches, spotty light showers all week long. then, we have this system that leads us into what looks like a wet weekend and we could see the possibility, yeah, some flooding. now, spring is just two days away so let's take you through monday. spotty showers monday afternoon. we'll see more widespread rain on tuesday. your tuesday morning commute. wednesday looks like a break, but by late in the day on wednesday, we could see a few more showers. thursday, cloudy skies. here we are into friday morning and you can see the darker

shades here of green and this continues right on through friday night. now remember, this is six days away, so this will change, but it looks like with the rain into tuesday, we'll pick up anywhere from a half inch in san francisco, 3/4 in santa rosa, then we'll add together the totals that we're going get into friday night. that will bring us up into an inch and a half and this looks like it should last into next weekend. so, the accuweather 7 day forecast featuring the two dry days, basically this weekend, even though we still could see a slight chance of a shower, download our abc7 news app and you'll be up to date on the timing of the systems. this will change because it's so far out. spring arrives 3:29 on monday morning. that's the vernal equinox when we have just about the same amount of daylight as darkness and you'll notice we are wet and breezy, going backwards with this forecast but we've divide out significantly so a little more rain, why not, but a lot, what are you going to do.

happy weekend to you. we're starting this half hour with a look at the weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. hey, lisa. >> hey, cornell. it's started to feel like we skipped a season. we went from winter almost into summer. well, we're going to go backwards now. in fact, it's going to feel like winter into next week but let's start with the current temperatures right now. we're mild, mainly until the 50s, 52, 55 in 52, 55 in 52, 555 mountain view and the rest of the bay area in the mid 50s closer to the water, san pablo, san francisco, 49 in sebastopol so we are milder with the mid level clouds out there. numbers well into the 50s but your forecast calls for more cloud cover today, the sun up at 7:15, sets at 7:20 and in between, we will see temperatures climbing by no noontime, more sun in the south bay and warmth there with highs in san jose reach the low 70s.

we'll be still in the 60s in the north bay with a chance of showers. i'll explain about a wet-looking seven-day outlook coming up. president trump had his first meeting with german chancellor angela merkel yesterday. the two leaders stood before the cameras and were asked about their differences and the president was asked by international reporters about his bomb shell claim that president obama wiretapped him. here's abc's chief white house correspondent jonathan carl. >> reporter: president welcomed the german chancellor to the oval office, but -- without the usual handshake. awkwardness isn't all that surprising as a candidate trump attacked angela merkel over and over again, slamming her policy on welcoming syrian refugees to germany. >> the german people are going to end up overthrowing this woman. i don't know what the hell she's

thinking. >> reporter: and when merkel was named "time" magazine's american of the year in 2013, trump tweeted, i told you "time" magazine would never pick me, despite being the big favorite. they picked the person who is ruining germany. yesterday, a step towards better relations. >> chancellor merkel, it is a great honor to welcome you to the people's house, the white house. >> reporter: it's much better to talk to one another, she said, and not about one another. when it came time for questions, the toughest came from two german reporters who asked about the president's no-evidence claim that president obama tapped his phones. trump dodged the first. >> mr. president -- >> reporter: and then alluded to the revelations a few years ago from wikileaks that u.s. intelligence had, in fact, monitored merkel's cell phone. >> as far as wiretapping, i guess by, you know, this past

administration, at least we have something in common, perhaps. >> reporter: the german reporter brought up what press secretary sean spicer said when he quoted a conservative commenter who on fox news alleged that british intelligence spied on trump for president obama. >> he didn't use the nsa. >> didn't use the fbi and he didn't use the department of justice. he used gchq. >> what is that? it's the initials for the british intelligence spying agency. >> reporter: spicer's use of that statement outraged the british who called the allegation utterly ridiculous. but trump didn't back down. >> all we did was quote a certain very talented legal mind who was the one responsible for saying that on television. i didn't make an opinion on it. that was a statement made by a very talented lawyer on fox, and so you shouldn't be talking to

me. you should be talking to fox. >> reporter: a short while later, this from fox news anchor shepherd smith. >> fox news knows of any evidence of any kind that the now president of the united states was surveilled at any time in any way, full stop. >> reporter: jonathan carl, abc news, washington. u.s. secretary of state rex tillerson is in beijing this morning. tillerson met with chinese foreign minister after arriving. their discussions are expected to focus on north korea's nuclear program, trade, and south china sea territorial disputes. tillerson's visit to beijing is the final stop on his three-country tour through northeast asia. well, it's more than a meal. 3,000 san francisco seniors who rely on meals on wheels for food every day are now worried what a loss of federal funds means for their future. president trump's budget proposal would cut money from this program's budget. exactly how much is not known

but abc7 news reporter kate larsen introduces us to some people who count on the service for more than just food. >> hello there. it's meals on wheels. >> reporter: monday through friday, jim fleming driver delivers two meals a day to rosa. she's 89 years old, survived the holocaust in paris and now lives alone after her husband passed. for the past five years, she's been relying on meals on wheels san francisco. >> i can't get to the store. i don't drive right now. >> reporter: meals on wheels agencies across the u.s., including here in the bay area, are worried about losing much of their funding. donald trump's proposed budget, which includes a $15 billion cut to the department of health and human services, which in many states like california partially funds programs like meals on wheels. the president's budget director said this about the cut. >> we can't spend money on programs just because they sound good. >> unbelievable. that anybody would make a

statement not contrary doesn't know what he's talking about. i'd be glad to have a beer with a glass of wine if he was to sit down and explain the details of it. >> i'll help rosa open pills, pill bottles, change lights bulbs. >> reporter: jim explains that meals on wheels is much more than free food delivery. he provides a welfare check, daily visit, and friendship. >> it allows most of my clients to stay in the home that they love, the home most of them raised their family in. >> reporter: meals on wheels also says their program makes financial sense. the cost of food for a senior for one year, $3,600, is about the same as one day in a hospital, which the daily nutrition and visits help prevent. in san francisco, kate larsen, abc7 news. palo alto unified school board has unanimously voted to rename two schools. david star jordan middle school and terman middle school were named after people who had

leadership roles in the eugenics movement. seventh graders sparked a grassroots campaign to rename the schools after he wrote a book report on david star jordan more than a year ago. parents we spoke to after the vote were happy. >> it's really an issue about values and leadership and just what, you know, what's in the best interest for the inclusivity of our children and our schools. and so it's extremely gratifying. >> former student we talked with oppos opposes renaming the schools saying david star jordan and lewis terman were also significant contributors to palo alto. school board committee estimates it will cost about $200,000 to rename both schools. the ronald mcdonald house at stanford needs your help to raise the final $1.25 million for its expansion and renovation. when it's finished, the facility will give 123 families with critically ill children a place to stay. that will make it the largest of

the ronald mcdonald houses worldwide. total cost of the upgrade is $46.5 million. if you'd like to donate, we have a link on our website at abc7news.com. happening today, teachers looking for jobs can head to the east bay for a job fair. the pittsburg unified school district is looking for candidates for teaching positions. the district is also offering a $5,000 sign-on bonus for math, science, and special education teachers. the job fair runs from 9:00 this morning until noon at the pittsburg high school gym on harper street. still ahead on abc7 mornings, hidden perks.
