live where you live, this is abc7 news. >> scared, anxious, angry. i think it was a lot of things. >> witnesses describe the moments after an explosion rattled a health care facility in san jose, injuring two people. it appears to have started with a cigarette. good evening, i'm katie marzullo in for eric thomas. detectives are looking into whether a lit cigarette ignited an oxygen tank around 4:00 this afternoon. lonnie rivera is live outside the facility. lonnie? >> yes, katie, the back area of this building was damaged because of the smoke and also because of dry chemicls inside. and tonight, two people were injured. one of them critically injured, in the hospital with severe burns. >> suddenly we heard, i think it was glass shattering.

and then the fire alarm, or the alarm started beeping. >> reporter: san jose fire, police, and paramedics responded to the call at the canyon springs post acute care facility. jasmine wong was inside with a singing group entertaining patients. >> it was pretty chaotic, so we stood around for a while, then we were told that everyoe needed to get out, so we helped evacuate the residents. >> police believe someone was smoking a cigarette in a room with an oxygen tank nearby, which caused the explosion sinc. >> someone who put his heart out for the kids and he loved it. he breathed baseball, ate baseball, slept baseball. >> navarro's funeral will be tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at the santa clara fairgrounds. it's been three and a half months since the deadly ghost ship fire and no charges have been filed. the district attorney's office is still waiting for a report.

sergio quintana has the details. >> in the ghost ship fire, 36hot people died and the d.a. promised a thorough review. according to some e-mails obtained by the east bay times, the d.a.'s office is pushing the city of oakland for all the details in this case and soon. the ghost ship is in the district represented by noel gayo. >> i'm surprised we're here today, dispute publicly, but again, it's not the first time. probably it's not the last. >> reporter: he says the city and county have long had a contentious relationship. now there seems to be friction between the d.a.'s office and oakland attorney barbara parker's office. one of o'malley's deputies sent a letter to one of parker's deputies, demanding a draft report under review. if the oakland fire department has submitted a report to your office for review, a copy of the unredacted unedited report must be smiting to the prosecuting

agency for review. >> the district attorney's office doesn't want to sugar coat it. they're the main investigative criminal arm of this county. they want to know what happened, when it happened, what did you see. >> reporter: criminal defense attorney daniel hor wits reviewed it and said fire investigators have an obligation to turn over all evidence to the prosecutor's office. if charges are ever filed, it could affect the case. >> this game-playing will be used by the city of oakland by the defense attorneys for the culpable people to say, there's a conspiracy to shift blame to my client. >> reporter: in a written statement to abc7 news, city attorney chief of staff says they're fully cooperating. there's no dispute. the city is not withholding any information. but he said the report has not been turned over to the d.a. as requested. i've talked with oakland city

renewals. a record number of people are getting tattoos removed because of fears they may be targeted by immigration agents. abc7 news was in san pablo, where the people who run the removing barriers program, say they've had more people coming to their weekly tattoo removal clinic. >> it's the fear. nobody wants to be a target, especially with the political climate surfacing, it's been getting difficult for them. >> the san pablo economic development corporation started the program to help people find jobs. laser tattoo removal can cost around $250 per square inch.nch. this costs $80 per five minutes. another resident in the bay area celebrated a special birthday. ♪ happy birthday to you >> abc7 news was in san francisco for maria tobar's 101st birthday. back in el salvador, she made

live where you live, this is abc7 news. good evening, i'm katie marzullo, in for eric thomas. in tonight's headlines, more than a hundred patients had to be evacuated from a health care facility in san jose after an explosion and fire. it happened at the canyon springs post acute care facility late this afternoon. investigators believe someone lit a cigarette near an oxygen tank. two people were injured. 12 rooms remain closed off because of damage tonight. hundreds of friends and loved ones honored a south bay little league president who was murdered last month. they shared stories and talked

about the commitment of frank navarro. his funeral is tomorrow morning. rock 'n' roll legend chuck berry passed away today. berry was one of the first musicians to be inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. he was 90 years old. the orly airport near paris is open again tonight following an attack on a female soldier there. a man held a pistol to the soldier's head, using her as a shield. investigators say he wrestled away her assault rifle and intended to shoot people. he was previously flagged for possible radicalism. lana hassan has the story tonight from paris. >> reporter: sirens outside the airport in paris where soldiers shot and killed a man after he tried to grab one of their assault rifles. >> it really was quite a quick response by the security officials. >> reporter: law enforcement shut down and evacuated part of the airport following the incident. thousands of passengers left

outside for hours waiting on word about what happened. and whether their flights would even take off. many other travelers stuck on planes. witnesses describe a scene of screaming, panic, and gun shots. the man was taken down inside the terminal, but outside the security barrier. according to the french prosecutor, he told soldiers he wanted to die for allah. the 39-year-old was born in france and lived in northern paris. his name was known to authorities for robbery and drug use, not terrorism. he was released from prison about four months ago. police are now at his home. officials also say he was involved in a carjacking earlier in the day and shot at a police officer at a traffic stop. >> since the early attacks in 2015, you have thousands of special forces officers deployed at places like the airports in france who are highly trained and prepared for incidents like this, and i think we see now how that training pays off. >> reporter: european law enforcement has been on high alert after the truck attacks in

nice and at the christmas market in berlin and the airport attack in brussels. for now, france remains under a state of emergency. it's sunday afternoon right now in beijing where secretary of state rex tillerson is meeting with chinese president xi jinping. tillerson is wrapping up his first trip overseas as secretary of state. he's been talking with leaders about north korea's nuclear capabilities after the country conducted two ballistic missile tests since president trump took office. >> we share a common view and a sense that tensions on the peninsula are quite high right now. and that things have reached a rather dangerous level. >> yesterday, tillerson raised the possibility of a pre-emptive military strike against north korea. to date, he said the u.s. and china are committed to doing everything they can to prevent conflict. now to peru and the tragic mudslides. the death toll is rising following intense rains that have left thousands of people

homeless. tonight, from heroic rescues are giving many hope. marci gonzalez has the story. >> reporter: in the fast-moving muddy water and piles of dangerous debris, a woman almost washed away as she tries to free herself, her hair seemingly gets stuck before she finally pulls herself to safety. one of many lives spared from peru's raging flooding and mudslides have that killed more than 70 people so far, and left more than 70,000 people homeless. tonight, as intense downpours overwhelms towns and rivers pouring over banks, desperate rescues are under way. near the normally dry city of lima, dozens of people crowd onto rooftops, zip lines used to bring families and pets over fast-rising water. others are forming human chains to get to dry ground.

tonight, half of the country has declared a state of emergency. >> officials say this is the worst flooding in peru in nearly two decades, with much more rain still expected. marci gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. people panicked in venice, italy, when smoke covered st. mark's basilica, a popular tourist destination yesterday. but it wasn't a fire. it turns out, thieves had thrown a smoke bomb to create a distraction. they wanted to rob a jewelry store. however, police arrived quickly, possibly drawn to the enormous cloud of smoke. the thieves ran off before they could carry out the heist or be arre arrested. officers detained a man at the white house who tried to hope over a bicycle rack barrier. the person did not make it over the fence. the man said he wanted to deliver a letter to someone in the trump administration. still ahead, the random act of kindness by raiders quarterback derek carr that
