suspect. officers arrived to patrick henry drive in santa clara last night. police called in a helicopter and canine unit to help for the search for the suspect. he was found inside a building. they arrested the man. not clear what he was trying to take. 49ers fans are dealing with the news that one of the team's most iconic players, dwight clark, is battling als, lou gehrig's disease. clark will forever be linkedis moment, known as the catch. this is from january 1982. joe montana found clark in the end zone to cap a come from beliend wb behind win against the cowboys for a championship win. the catch propelled them to their first championship. he played nine years for san francisco. he suspects playing football may have led to his disease. he addy scrisaid, quote, i can' play golf or walk any distances. picking up anything over 30 pounds is a chore. the one piece of good news is

that the disease seems to be progressing more slowly than in some patients. while i'm still trying to wrap my head around the challenge, i will face this disease over the coming years. the only thing i know is i am going to fight like hell and live every day to the fullest. moments after the catch, 7 colleague, shoem mawas the fi congratulate clark. >> what are your thoughts when you see the play and think about the news today? >> well, 35 years ago, matt. it was something that bonded us for the rest of our lives, winning the super bowl. then to see it today, i've known for a while that dwight has had als. to see it in print, to come from here, it was just devastating. and it was almost crushing to see it in print today, though we've known it for a while. >> in a statement, joe montana said, jennifer and i are saddened by the diagnosis of dwight. this is a difficult time for dwight, kelly and all of us who love him. former teammate jerry rice said,

we know him for the catch but he's a great individual who cares about people. i love this guy. >> read the statement on abc 7 news.com. we have the statements from the team and als resources on that for you. developing news out of santa cruz county, where police are gathering clues to an unfathomable tragedy. a man shot and killed his 8-year-old daughter and turned the gun on himself. 3:15 yesterday afternoon. an outing at the mall turned deadly. >> at this point, the family was together in the mall for a period of time. at which point, the father walked outside for a while with the 8-year-old daughter. the mom was concerned, as i mentioned, that he was potentially suicidasuicidal. she called for the police. >> when police arrived, the mom and family members led them to a black kia, where both bodies were found. authorities are trying to find out what triggered the violence. the clock is ticking for thousands of anxious bay area families. they are waiting to hear if

their kids got into the school of their choice. there is a glitch in the san francisco unified assignments being mailed out. >> we're waiting. >> in limbo. >> reporter: she can't think about anything else but where her 5-year-old daughter will start school in the fall. she was hoping to hear by now, but first round school assignments have been delayed by the san francisco unified school district. >> been a long process, and this is -- it's been really, really hard for us because, you know, touring all the schools, heart wrenching. a lot of time put into it. we just need to know. >> it makes our family very nervous and a little concerned. >> reporter: this mother told us via facetime her son wants to play baseball at a public school but he's been accepted by private schools and deadlines are looming. >> they have dates coming up just this week that we have to accept or decline.

it is very hard to not know yet from the school district, you know, that he has an assignment within the sfusd. >> reporter: parents choose from 130 schools in the district. there are 14,000 applications. the number is average but staffing emergencies have delayed the process. this notice was posted on the district's website. the assignments would be late. >> our computer system is working fine. it is just taking a little bit longer to go through all of the checks to make sure everything is accurate. >> reporter: no guarantee families will get their school of choice, even if that school is in your neighborhood. >> do you have any other options? >> private school or moving out of the city. >> reporter: the waiting continues. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. the stage is set for what could be a fiery showdown today on capitol hill. fbi director james comey will testify before congress and is expected to dispute president trump's allegations of wiretapping by president obama.

pthere is a chance for thunder n tuesday, spilling into wednesday's forecast. that's the middle highlight, the chance of lightning and thunder. gray and cool today as the first day of spring is a transition for us back to wet weather. heavier rain and wind is possible friday through saturday. a look at the pattern. remember the area of high pressure that brought us the warmth last week and held off for the rest of the weekend, with the ina and out of sunshin? the storm will ride to the north. the best chance of showers will be in the north bay into the noon hour. then we'll have some slide across the rest of our neighborhoods during the evening commute. from 5:00 to 7:00, it definitely spreads out. during the overnight, yellow rolls in. tomorrow morning, we're going to wake up with another slickness on the roads. we'll get a little break after the morning commute. from 9:00 to noon, one system dries out. the other system starts to move in with scattered showers and thunderstorms, best across the

buchanan field in concord then flown to a burn center. witnesses heard an explosion inside the vehicle before the fire. the victim suffered really bad burns. second degree burns to 80% of his body. we don't yet know a cause. 49ers legend dwight clark suspects football led to his als diagnosis. the two-time super bowl champ disclosed his disease yesterday in a letter. his friends and former team's management is responding. we're live in santa clara. >> natasha, clark says he can't -- he started feeling symptoms in 2015 and now he can't run, he can't play golf, he can't walk a lot of distances. he doesn't want to speak publicly about this, but he did write a letter. in the letter, clark wrote, i've asked if playing football caused this. i don't know for sure, but i certainly suspect it did.

and i encourage the nflpa and the nfl to continue working together in their efforts to make the game of football safer. clark was on the receiving end of the catch, one of the most famous plays in nfl history. in 1982, it helped the 49ers get to the team's first super bowl. clark went on to become a pro bowler and now has his 49ers jersey retired. he said in an open letter again that he started feeling the symptoms of als a couple years back. a professor of neurology at ucfs told us als is a rare disorder to affects the nerves and muscles. affects 1 in 100,000 people and is not genetic. >> i think any time a public figure comes forward and announces they have als, it raises awareness. we see more patients coming in to be diagnosed. we see an increase in funding for research, which is so critical, to try to get at the underlying cause of the disease.

>> 49ers president jed york released a state m sment saying quote, i was deeply saddened to learn of dwight' recent diagnosis. as a member of our family, he will receive the full and unconditional support of the san francisco 49ers. we will stand alongside dwight and his family as they wage this battle. now, doctors don't know what causes the disease. drugs can slow the progression of it. but there is no cure. reporting live from santa clara, abc 7 news. >> thank you. abc 7 sports anchor mike played with dwight clark. he spoke with matt keller about how clark isn't the only former player dealing with hardships possibly related to the game. >> dwight clark said that maybe football has something to do with the diagnosis. >> well, he's not sure but thinks it probably does. als, dementia, parkinson's and, you know, alzheimer's are things we're all dealing with. all dealing with neurologists now and basically finding out, i don't want to say our death sentence, but we're all finding

surface streets and was going very fast. we've reached out to the chp for more information and are waiting to hear back. the district attorney's office is expected to release more information today about an investigative report on the ghost ship fire that killed 36 people. there was a three week delay in getting the report to the da. a retired superior court judge is asking why the report wasn't delivered to the da at the same time it was given to the city attorney. >> why was the report given to the city attorney and, secondly, why did the city attorney hold on to the report for at least three weeks? if charges are filed, any good defense attorney is going to jump all over this. that is the delay and what was going on with this report. >> county prosecutors can start considering possible criminal charges in the fire. no official cause has yet been released. we are hearing from one of the women asked for proof of residency before she was served her food at a southern california restaurant. this happened last week when the

24-year-old, her sister and two friends decided to try the saint marc pub cafe in huntington beach. the waiter repeatedly asked to see the group's ids to make sure they were american citizens or he said he wouldn't serve them. >> i said, did you ask me this? i literally got chills down, like, throughout my entire body. i was in a complete state of shock. i think we all were. >> they complained to the manager and walked out. the restaurant since fired the waiter and apologized, saying that behavior is not representative of the restaurant and won't be tolerated. a teenager in australia is recovering from severe arm wounds after he jumped into crocodile infested waters on a dare. he was bragging he could swim in the river, known for saltwater crocodiles. others in the hostile usualed him to do it.drinks,

5:52. opening state ms begin today in the murder trial of william schultz. the man charged with the 2015 stabbing death of a 9-year-old, during a sleepover at the boy's discovery bay home. he was 18 at the time and confessed to the killing just to see what it was like, he said. a mental health expert evaluated him the day before the stabbing because he was displaying dilutional behavior. the da's office won't seek the death penalty. the sonoma county sheriff's office needs help finding a missing man. 68-year-old david elliott. last seen thursday morning. he somehow got away from his caregiver while hiking in sonoma regional park. he suffers from dementia that
