the stunning announcement that legendary 49ers dwight clark is suffering from als is prompting new questions about the way football is played. thank you for joining us this midday. i'm natasha zouves. >> and i'm kristen zse. as many battle with the news clark is battling with als, the wife of a high school coach is speaking out about her husband's struggle with the disease. we are live at levi stadium in santa clara. we're focused on raising awareness. >> reporter: yes. and it is very sad news about clark's diagnosis. but clark, as we all know, is a

49ers legend and he is having a hard time accepting that he has als. it was a play that will always be remembered by 49ers fans. the catch dwight clark made in 1982 that helped get to the team to the first super bowl. the football player has grown weak and experienced something in his left hand in 2015 and it is something lucy knowsal too well. her husband was a football coach at los gatos and played college football as well and later died of als. >> it seems to be a death sentence. he can fight it. and he is a fighter. he's very courageous as my husband was and my husband had been told he had a year to live and he lived 34 years. >> and he wrote, i can't run, play golf or walk any distances, picking up anything over 30 pounds is a good chore. the one piece of good news is that the disease seems to be progressing more slowly than in other patients. it affects the nerves and muscles. as it progresses, people lose

the ability to breathe, speak and walk. what will happen is unknown. >> they are all considered degenerative diseases. something triggers the nerve to die and we don't know what that trigger is. if we did, we could obviously treat these diseases much better than we did. >> reporter: weed meyer is dedicated to discovering a cure and hopes the diagnosis will raise awareness of the disease. >> he will become the new famous face of this disease, which for him i know is difficult, but he becomes the voice for those that have no voice. >> reporter: 49ers president released a statement saying he is deeply saddened about the news and the organization is offering their support to clark's family. live from santa clara, abc 7 news. our colleague abc 7 sports

anchor mike shumann played along clark on the super bowl team. >> and he has a special insight with matt keller. >> and you know him as an athlete and a friend. how is he going to deal with this diagnosis. >> he is one of the most determined guys he's ever met so he will take this on with a hall of fame background, players and teammates and a lot of guys will help him through it and his dear wife kelly. he knows he's in for the battle of his life but hess a a determined guy. and this version of als will have a battle in itself trying to deal with dwight. now we all know and just fill out a prayer and, dwight, i love you like a brother and i'm there for you, if you get a chance say a prayer for dwight. >> a lot of will do just that. joe montana said jep fer and i are saddened by the diagnosis of dwight. this is a difficult time for dwight, kelly and all of us who love him. >> hall of famer ronnie lott said, to live with another of my

the north bay is the best chance and then getting into the santa cruz mountains, down toward san francisco and oakland, and even along the east bay hills by 7:00 and by 8:00 or 9:00, you could see yellows in there. even into the south bay. so moderate showers are possible. you could see light rain falling right now in san rafael. mid-60s at the coast and throughout the afternoon hours. as you mentioned, just about every day we have a chance of rain to stick around for the accuweather forecast and hour by hour look at tomorrow. you remember when a piece of concrete came down on a driver in a bay bridge tunnel and this morning finally caltrans is working on a fix. amy hollyfield has the work that needs to be done live in oakland for us. amy? >> reporter: hi, natasha, they are working on it right now. so a lane is closed right now in that eastbound tunnel. caltrans said they examined the concrete over the last few months and didn't see any

imminent problems and doesn't think anyone is in danger but have decided it is time to put in a fix. when you drive through this bay bridge tunnel toward oakland, you are covered by concrete that is 81 years old. >> 81, really? wow! amazing. >> reporter: pieces started breaking off about a year ago. a car hit one chunk that had fallen, causing $3,000 worth of damage. now when you drive by here, you will see crews working to replace questionable patches of concrete. drivers say they are relieved. >> long overdo. i live in antioch and taking family over there to the airport, a little bit reluctant going that way. >> reporter: caltrans didn't x-ray the tunnel after it started breaking apart and found 200 spots that could potentially cause problems. >> a fraction of those had [ inaudible ] and what we decided to do there was to take

care of all of the 200 areas. >> they are doing the work during noncommute daylight hours so you'll see a lane shut down during that time. drivers say this is good to see, but they would feel better if they could see more pro-active work being done. >> the ground is constantly moving and shaking here every single day and that bridge needs constant work and retrofit. even the new bridge. >> reporter: caltrans said the state has a lot of bridges and roads built in the '30, '40'30, '40, '30, '40'30, '40, '30, '40, '50s and they need the work done. this work will go on until june. live, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. a shut down for five hours overnight, a woman found lying in the roadway was a victim of a hit-and-run crash. they say it appears she was crossing the street between

willmore and san simmon when she was hit by the driver. the driver left the scene but later contacted police. she's cooperating with the investigation. the name of the 26-year-old victim will be released once her family is notified. new details, the waiting should be over soon for thousand of san francisco parents in limbo not knowing where kids will be attending school in the fall. abc 7 news just spoke with the district. we are told letters with school assignments will be going out this evening after staffing emergencies delayed the process last week. anxious families have been waiting on pins and needles, saying they need to know if their kids have been accepted to the school of choice, otherwise they will need to explore other options, including private schools. >> and a lot of time put into it and we need to know. >> the district said they are trying to accommodate 14,000 students. families should begin receiving

we are tracking developing news out of washington and that showdown on capitol hill. the fbi director in the spotlight this morning. >> james comey testifying about the investigation into russian meddling in the election. and president trump's explosive wiretapping allegations. here is abc news reporter kenneth motton. >> comey on the record, confirming the investigation into the russian meddling into the election and the alleged contact with the russian campaign. >> because it is an open and ongoing investigation, i cannot say more about what we are doing and whose conduct we are examining. >> months of public silence over and telling everyone that the wiretapping claims are wrong.

>> with regard to the tweets, i have no information that supports those tweets. >> for two weeks the white house has backed trump who said when he tweeted wiretapped, he meant surveillance. >> we know there was not a physical wiretap of trump tower. however, it is still possible that other surveillance activities were used against president trump and his associates. >> reporter: the president's source not the fbi, but conservative commentary. >> president obama could not order a wiretap of anyone. no president could. >> this morning the president deflecting on twitter, denying collusion with russia and tweeting that the congress and the fbi and all others should be looking into the leaking of classified information. must find leaker, now. >> the director of the national security agency is testifying about the leak of classified information and the efforts to investigate them. as for russia, they are not getting into the details of the investigation, only confirming that there is one.

let's start with live doppler 7 and kind of expand upon what we talked about earlier in the show. you could see over the last hour or so that the rain is on the increase over the north bay and you could see the plume heading toward san francisco so sprinkles are on the way and more green to the southwest of us. and the arrow showing the storm track so that is what is going to spread this to the south bay as we head toward the evening commute. the harder storm is still well off shore but as that rolls in tomorrow and into wednesday, that cold air brings us the chance of some thunder. right now pretty quiet down at 280 at 17. you are the last area to see wet weather. more than likely getting through

most of the commute if not all of this this evening. cooler today and wet pattern begins. there is your thunder and a stronger storm coming in on friday and saturday and probably lingering into sunday. here is a look at today's temperatures. mild out there. about 60 in santa rosa. 62 to 67 for the rest of us. so if you want to head outside, the longer you wait, the more likely you're going to run into wet weather from the north bay to the south bay. so i put caution on the activity planner because you get later on walking the dog. it is cool tomorrow if you are exercising and on the bay it is breezy and mix that together and not the best days to be outside. and the weekend, the pollen that was out there. look at the trees, and many others. you could see mid to upper 50s. now let it's about our storm impact scale. it is one. light. breezy at times but no damage and thunder possible on tuesday and wednesday. here is a look from 7:00 until

about midnight. and you could see some yellow in. there so there are some spots of moderate showers. and then the cold front comes through. there is a chance of thunder tomorrow morning. once the cold front rolls through it introduces us to cooler air. there is still showers but here comes the cooler air. and then another round of thunder possible on tuesday night into wednesday. with that particular storm. all right, heading out this evening. a couple hundredths of an inch of rain so it is slick once the sun goes down. tomorrow's morning commute is difficult as we'll have two tenths in the south bay to half an inch in the north bay overnight. scattered showers and thunderstorms tuesday through wednesday. thursday probably could take the storm impact scale, it is looking like the driest day and friday, saturday and also sunday a little chance of rain with the heaviest rain friday night into sunday morning before most of us wake up. that is the way it looks right now. >> first day of spring, spring showers, it all goes together. thanks, mike. >> you bet. today's morning money
