connection with a string of home invasion robberies in danville, livermore and fremont has been amended to include robbery and attempted murder charged for the september orinda incident. >> we're glad that we were able to identify evidence that helped us to charge the crime. >> reporter: this august fremont home invasion was captured on surveillance video. you can see one of the suspects take down his hoodie revealing his face. the deputy d.a. said even though all six men were not necessarily present in orinda, they are all charged under the theory they were part of a larger conspiracy to commit these types of crimes. carol brown, who did not want to appear on camera today, said she's adjusting to a new normal. >> i'm very grateful to be alive. >> reporter: one of the six men charged had been a member of a controversial richmond program that mentors young men and pays them for meeting certain life goals. >> i would support that program and i'm sorry it didn't work out for him. >> reporter: the d.a.'s office would not say what evidence

specifically helped link the six men to the orinda incident, but did say investigators have been going through physical, cell phone and other evidence over the last six months. in martinez, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. san jose's police chief is saying he doesn't believe any policies were violated in the officer-involved shooting of a man running around naked in a residential neighborhood on friday. the suspect remains in critical condition. abc 7 news reporter david louie joins us live from police headquarters in san jose. >> reporter: san jose police started to roll out body cameras last summer, and this incident on friday was captured on three cameras. the video has not been released, however, chief eddie garcia believes there has been no violation of departmental policy. residents had called police because a man was walking around naked in front of children and adults on eva court near valerie drive. 53-year-old san jose resident john bradley bowles led police on a four-mile pursuit to a

major shopping center. >> the suspect did not comply with commands and aimed what appeared to be a weapon at the officers. one officer subsequently fired at the suspect. >> reporter: it was discovered later the weapon was a caulking gun. the suspect then revved up the engine and appeared ready to drive off again. the pickup had already hit several vehicles during the police chase. >> additional officers fired their weapons at the suspect out of fear that he was going to enter the crowded parking lot and strike innocent people. a total of three officers fired at the suspect, striking him several times. >> reporter: three officers fired shots. all three were wearing body cameras and the video will be roo view ee eed as part of the investigation. the suspect was transported to valley medical center where he remains in critical condition. chief garcia says bowles has a history of mental illness. he's facing charged of assault with a deadly weapon, annoying

and molesting a child, evasion and hit and run. the three officers have been placed on routine paid administrative leave. >> it appears the officers used that force because they wanted to save lives. >> reporter: in san jose, david louie, abc 7 news. new details now about an accident involving a cable car in san francisco. we learned today a 93-year-old man hit by the cable car has died. he was walking in the crosswalk at mason and filbert yesterday afternoon. service on the cable car line was stopped for more than an hour. to the weather now, our first week of spring is shaping up to be a wet one. abc 7 news was in san francisco where people with umbrellas in hand were prepared for the rain. there was a little mist in the city with showers farther north and east. meteorologist sandia pat sandhy tracking the rain for us. >> let's take a look at live doppler 7. it is active compared to days past and you will notice the yellows there indicating

will be completely try. you can track the rain using our abc 7 news app. make sure to enable push alerts for instant weather and breaking news updates any time. well, football players and fans are offering support tonight to 49ers legend dwight clark. as you've probably heard, clark has announced that he is suffering from als, also known as lou gehrig's disease. als affects the function of nerves and muscles in the body. the als association says just more than 6,000 people in the united states are diagnosed with als each year. that's 15 new cases a day. the life expectancy of a person with als averages about 2 to up to 5 years from the time of diagnosis. nfl players have four times greater risk of als and alzheimer's. that's according to a study by the national institute for occupational safety and health in cincinnati. carolyn tyler talked with someone who personally knows what clark might be going through. she's in the newsroom tonight.

carolyn, what a tough, horrible diagnosis. >> it is. and this patient like many of us is offering his support to dwight clark. at the same time, he's hoping that renewed interest will lead to more research and treatment. there are nearly 20,000 americans living with als, including matt cheney. the lafayette resident was diagnosed 16 years ago, surviving much longer than most. >> it's good to have a positive attitude, an outlook, but with als, it will run its own course. >> reporter: the rare disorder affects its nerves and muscles, eventually robbing people of their ability to move, speak, swallow and breathe. this married father of two showed us how he uses his foot and an ipad app to communicate. >> it helps when my speech is fatigued. >> reporter: his caretaker also helps as he copes with challenges of this progressive disease. >> there are many, but the

biggest is losing independence. >> reporter: the 57-year-old played football at merced junior college back in the '70s. he's been a 49ers fan all his life. >> when you heard about dwight clark, what thoughts went through your mind? >> any time anyone receives a diagnosis of als, a very emotional time. >> but there is hope according to dr. jonathan katz of cpmc. >> i think scientific research is reaching a point right now where things are beginning to tip a little bit. we're getting a little bit better understanding of the disease. >> reporter: matt cheney has been recognized for his work with the als association and is ready to reach out to one of the newest patients. >> if they have any questions, he's here. >> carolyn tyler, abc 7 news.

well, there is currently no treatment or cure for als, but medical advances can help people function with this disease. at 6:00 we'll have a look at a device that is helping give a voice to patients who lost their ability to speak. the wife of hall of famer gale sayers says the chicago bears legend has been diagnosed with dementia. she told "the kansas city star" that her 73-year-old husband was diagnosed four years ago and she blames his football career. sayers played for the bears for seven seasons starting in 1965. he's also known for his relationship with teammate brian piccolo which was the late of the 1971 abc movie of the week "brian's song." a murder case that rocked an east bay community headed to court today. >> the young man accused of killing his friend's brother is not denying it happened. how his attorneys hope to spare him from a guilty sentence. also a possible new terrorist plot prompts a carry-on rule for international passengers.

people packed an east bay courtroom for the trial of a ying man accused of killing his best friend's 9-year-old

brother. prosecutors say william shultz planned the murder because he wanted to see what it felt like to kill someone. laura anthony was in the courtroom and she is live in martinez tonight. laura. >> reporter: dan, this was a very emotional hearing this morning. many in the courtroom were crying, including at least one juror. shultz' attorney argued that her client was delusional, but the prosecution argued that william shultz was executing a larger plan. william shultz carried a survival bag with maps, first aid kit and jagged-edge knife because he thought a world war was imminent. to get ready on april 26, 2015, he decided to try his hand at killing. that's according to a contra costa prosecutor on the first day of shultz' trial in the murder of 9-year-old jordan almgren. after his arrest, shultz told detectives i needed to see what it felt like to kill somebody. >> jordy was enormously

friendly, happy and welcoming boy. >> reporter: an avid baseball player, jordy as his family called him was stabbed five times as he slept in his bunk bed inside his discovery bay home. shultz was a guest, the best friend of jordy's older brother. the almgrens did not know shultz had just fought with his mother and sheriff's were called or that he had just had a mental health evaluation. his five-inch hunting knife was the murder weapon. what he didn't plan on was slashing himself on the arm. he told police i noticed i was dragging blood all over the carpet. i knew they could test the blood and figure out whose it was. in her opening statement, shultz' attorney did not dispute that he killed the boy but said it wasn't premeditated. the evidence you will hear will not make sense of jordy's murder. the evidence you will hear is about billy's unraveling reality.

reuters is reporting a terrorism threat has led to a new carry-on rule for flights from certain countries in the middle east and africa to the u.s. passengers will have to check almost all electronic devices. the rule affects devices larger than a cell phone and will impact over a dozen airlines. officials tell reuters news that the electronics ban follows a terrorism threat and is expected to be officially announced tomorrow. the department of homeland security says it does not comment on potential security precautions. as rain returns to the bay area, most of a santa clara county park is still closed. abc 7 news was in san jose where there are "do not enter" signs in parts of hellier county park. a few areas, including the dog park are open, but most of it has been closed since the flooding of coyote creek. park staff continue to work to clean up the damage. so far there's no word on when the park will fully reopen. abc 7 news was at pier 9 as the water emergency transportation authority showed

it will shuttle more passengers and bike buyicycles on the shut right now. >> that's going to enable them to increase service on existing routes but also launch new services, like richmond-san francisco or treasure island-san francisco. >> bay ferry will go from 11 vessels today to 16 by 2019. some of those will be able to hit higher speeds to expand vallejo to san francisco route. ferries to cars now. one lawmaker wants to make it easier for drivers to pay parking tickets and all the fees they carry. >> michael finney is here with that story and more. >> this is a great idea. a new bill would require cities to provide low income drivers with more options when paying for parking tickets. if it passes, a new law would make cities to allow parking

fines to be paid for over a period of 12 months. cities with existing payment plans would be barred from charging individuals a fee to participate in these types of programs. the kaufcost of a parking ticken spiral out of control with the addition of bnb fees, late fees and city fees. >> we believe in holding people accountable for following the rules. we just think that the penalty assessment has gone crazy. >> the bill does not set an income level to determine who is eligible to take part in payment plans and who is not. if predictions hold, airports are going to be packed this spring. u.s. airlines expect to carry 4% more passengers this year than last. the trade group airline for america forecasts a record 145 million u.s. passengers will fly between march 1st and april 30th. the good news, the airlines are

adding seats and flights. i want you to especially look for additional nonstop long-haul flights. there are some great deals out there. ticket prices are cheaper than average but this could be the end of good times for passengers. there are indications prices will soon start going up again. saks fifth avenue is the latest retailer to report a hack of customers' information. buzzfeed first reported the breach that included shoppers' e-mail addresses and phone numbers. the information was visible on the retailers website. the pages reviewed by buzzfeed are no longer online. the exposed data was visible only over a specific link on the saks site where customers went to join a wait list for products. saks is working quickly to fix the breach and key data like credit card numbers were never expo exposed. 7. hi there, everyone.

moving in and that's when we're tracking some thunder tomorrow afternoon, evening hours. still the potential for wet weather going into wednesday morning's commute. it could be briefly heavy. 5:00 to 7:00 a.m., even to 9:00 a.m. and here's a look at the rainfall totals really by later on going into tonight. not a whole lot, anywhere from a 10th to half an inch. so far most areas have been under a 10th of an inch where it has rained today. 9:00 a.m. wednesday we could track up to an inch of rain for our wettest spots. it does turn to snow in the sierra nevada. a winter weather advisory starts 1:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, runs until wednesday morning. expecting up to a foot over the crest. 4 to 8 inches above 6500 feet and that means travel delays. the snow level will come down even more to about 5,000 feet as we head into the middle of the workweek. temperatures first thing in the morning really starting out in the 50s. pretty mild. but you'll need the rain gear tomorrow afternoon. make sure you hang on to the umbrella. showers and a chance of thunder.
