and over to the sierra foothills, a line of powerful thunderstorms with numerous lightning strikes. notice the area there with the red. well, those storms a little earlier were closer to merced. they were so intense that tornado warnings had been issued. but we have no reports yet of actual tornados and we still have snow falling in the sierra. ignore the labels on these camera shots, i just changed them. i want to show you the view from the east bay hills camera. look at those dark clouds mixed in with the breaks of sunshine. 62 in san francisco, mid60s at oakland, mountain view, san jose, gilroy. this is the sutro camera. we've got lots of blue sky so conditions are calm the next couple of hours. temperature readings at santa rosa, napa, novato, fairfield, concord and livermore all in the mid-60s. the storm coming in late tonight and tomorrow morning ranks 2 on the storm impact scale. look for a messy morning

commute. thunder and hail are possible in this storm. just quick forecast animation. things will be calm until 10:00 tonight. then that wave of stormy weather starts to sweep through and once again messy and stormy morning commute. i'll have a closer look a little bit later. a vallejo home is red tagged after a tree came crashing down onto the house overnight. abc 7 news reporter amy holly foo hollyfield spoke with the homeowner. >> reporter: when the huge oak first hit the house, the family inside thought it was an earthquake. >> when the first branch hit, it shook the house. so when we got up, it was 2:13. we were like, okay, check the floors, make sure there's no glass on the floors. >> reporter: they looked outside only to find it was the tree they had always worried about. a few years ago they had looked into having it removed. >> it was a bunch of red tape.

a lot of hoops to jump through and money. so we just decided to leave it alone at the time. here we are 11 years later and it's finally falling. >> reporter: it fell at 2:15 this morning. a tree company came out later in the morning to start removing it so they could see the damage. officials red tagged it for now, but the family is hopeful that the home is bruised but not broken. >> i've been up since 2:13 this morning and i want to go to sleep but i can't. so i'm just here waiting. >> reporter: a spokeswoman for the city of vallejo says she can't speak to what the permit process was back when this family tried to get the tree removed, but as of today if you want to get your tree trimmed, you need to get a permit and it is free. if an inspector decides your tree is sick and needs to be removed, they can do that for $477. in vallejo, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. a reminder to drive carefully on wet roads.

man suspected of murdering the four officers. a man arrested for biting a lover's scalp was released from jail today. david diaz was given five years probation for his latest run-in with the law. he pled guilty for handcuffing a man and biting a chunk out of his scalp. in 2014 he was found guilty of manslaughter for choking a man while having sex. two years later he was arrested for setting his boyfriend's house on fire. he has a stay away order from the bar and several homes in the castro. a film educator who worked with children pleaded not guilty to child porn charges. 71-year-old john morrison is charged with felony child pornography possession and distribution. police arrested him last week after finding hundreds of videos and images of children engaged in sex acts on computers in his san francisco home. he taught film production to kids at the california film institute in san rafael. a former san bruno firefighter accused of stealing

money from a toy drive is now free on bail. police arrested holly nelson yesterday. she's charged with two felony counts of grand theft. nelson stole $25,000 from the san bruno firefighters association toy drive program between january and october of last year. moments ago san jose police released this video of two people seen robbing a jewelry store at valley fair mall. the man was looking at merchandise when he reached over the counter and grabbed a diamond. the suspect dropped the diamond but then grabbed it and ran out of the store. a woman who was with the suspect followed him out. the female leaders at uber today promised a change in culture as the company deals with several high-profile issues. the company held a conference call with three of its highest ranking female staff members. board nebraska arianna huffington says she wants uber to build a place where no woman has to choose between her career and unacceptable behavior. a private investigator is

looking into systemic problems with sexual harassment. this weekend uber's president stepped down citing leadership concerns. despite these problems, uber said americans used its service more than ever before. california lawmakers are proposing a tax on millionaires to help cover tuition costs for in-state college students. the legislation would impose a 1% tax on californians making mre than $1 million a year. this comes as 80 wealthy new yorkers came forward and asked lawmakers there to raise their taxes. they said they can afford to pay more to support schools, roads, bridges and programs to help poor and homeless new yorkers. the fate of the raiders future in oakland could come to a head one week from today. nfl owners are expected to vote on the raiders' application to move to las vegas at their spring meeting next week in arizona. a coalition of local fan groups have launched an 11th hour drive to get owners to reject that idea. they're urging bay area residents and football nations

those added carry-on restrictions for passengers flying to the u.s. from countries from the midwest. >> passengers on certain airlines will no longer be allowed to carry on some larger electronic devices. >> reporter: abc news has just learned moments ago that these new security measures are a result of intelligence received earlier this year indicating that associates of isis are working on smuggling explosive-laden electronics on u.s.-bound flights. ten airports in eight countries are telling passengers they can no longer carry devices larger than their cell phones on the plane. the emergency rule affects passengers traveling to the united states from eight middle eastern countries, countries including jordan, egypt, saudi arabia and the gulf states. no longer allowed in the cabin of jet liners, laptops, tablets, cameras, dvd players and

today the mayor signed an ordinance into law that will prohibit the city from participating in any time of identity-based registry. during the campaign president trump vowed to establish a registry for muslims in the u.s. none has been enacted but the preemptive measure is intend to give targeted groups some peace of mind. >> having something like this weighing over our heads further puts us on high alert. like what's going to happen next. how else will we be criminalized and picked on. >> san francisco is the first city in the nation to enact such an ordinance. it prevents the city from creating or participating in any government program that requires registration based on religion or ethnicity. the oakland city council is set to build on the building of a massive building. >> it has many supporters and critics. kristen sze is here with a preview. >> the macarthur transit village project has several phases.

up for final approval tonight is the developer's request to build a 24-story tower for residential and retail use. this is a developer's rendering of the tower. it would be three times higher than anything else in the neighborhood. now i'll pause this so i can show you basically where this is going to be. here is the macarthur b.a.r.t. station and this lot in particular right here i'm circling, that's where the tower would be built. the business improvement district has been very vocal supporting the project. >> it will bring 402 units of housing as well as 13,000 square feet of retail to our district. >> the project broke ground in 2011. opponents say it sticks out and will bring too much traffic but two weeks ago the council unanimously passed the first reading of the height exemption after the developer promised to include more affordable units, streetlights and local jobs. if the plan gets the second green light as expected tonight, construction could be completed

you can see that line of lightning strikes and thunderstorms moving out of the central valley into the sierra foothills right now and there's still snow in the sierra. a variety pack of weather. the storm that moved through overnight and this morning produced significant rainfall totals in many locations, just under an inch in santa rosa, 1.33 here in san francisco, nearly 3 in mount st. helena. only 0.28 at moffett field. this is the exploratorium camera looking over the bay where we have scattered clouds and lots of sunshine. these are our forecast features. this is the one i was trying to complete a minute ago. a strong storm, another strong storm arrives on friday. thunder and hail are possible tomorrow with the storm that comes in late tonight. so we've only got a little bit of a break between storms. these storms are significant storms. our storm impact scale will rank 2, a moderate storm. it will have periods of heavy

rainfall, a messy morning commute and thunder and hail are possible. let me give you a little animation. notice most of the evening will be pretty calm, but 10:00 or 11:00 tonight we'll see that wave of storminess beginning to push into the north bay and parts of sonoma county. then it swings through the north bay and by 5:00 tomorrow morning as the morning commute gets under way, we'll see widespread areas of moderate to heavy rainfall across all of the bay area except the north bay. it's going to remain wet through most of the bay area through the early morning to mid-morning hours. then mid to late afternoon we'll actually see a pretty good amount of sunshine. but the storm that moves through earlier will be a pretty strong one. we project rainfall totals by tomorrow evening only a 0.2 in the north bay, 0.87 at fairfield, 0.8 of an inch at hayward. on we go to tomorrow morning's commute. use caution, rain will be heavy at times, slippery roads.

we have breaking news out of the south bay. sky 7 is over the scene of an accident that left a bicyclist dead in san jose. it is still a very active scene at lee avenue and coit drive. this happened just before 3:00 this afternoon. police say a man on the bicycle died. the driver did stop nearby. investigators are now working to determine what led up to that crash. shifting to some lighter news, "dancing with the stars" kicked off its 24th season in style last night. athletes this season certainly very competitive, getting four of the top five scores. george has the post-show report. >> reporter: for week one, simone biles and her partner tangoed to the top of the judge's leaked scoring all 8s. just last season laurie

a domestic dispute outside an office complex. this happened near the port of redwood city around 2:20 this afternoon. a man and a woman got into some kind of confrontation. the man had a gun, chased the woman down the street and apparently fired a shot at her. police cornered the man and he pointed the gun at his head as police fired. the man is dead but it's not clear which bullet killed him. redwood city police have said there is no danger to the general public. here's other stories making headlines at 4:30. officers and families honor four fallen oakland police officers today eight years after they were killed in the line of duty. they shared stories and reflected on the impact those four men had on their lives. vic lee tweeted from the trial of three santa clara county deputies accused of killing inmate michael tyree. coming up at 5:00, the evidence the defense pointed to while saying this was not a homicide. plastic straws. huntington beach based strawfree.org says plastic straws are one of the top ten pieces of garbage polluting the ocean. they say americans use 500 million plastic straws every day. the group was organized after this video showing a plastic straw being pulled from a turtle's nose. right now they are focusing the ban on huntington beach. a zoo in the czech republic is taking no chances at this point. they're cutting off the horns of their 21 rhinos. the action being taken after somebody broke into a wildlife park near paris earlier this month and killed a rhino for its horn. zoos around the world are on high alert now. rhino horn is used for jewelry as well as traditional medicine. two pounds of horn sell for $100,000 in vietnam. zoo keepers in the czech republic say this was a tough decision, but the risk was too high. they say the procedure is painless, but how sad is it that

this is what it's come to, in a zoo of all places. all right, we'll get a check of the weather now. it struck me that if you were going to teach a meteorology class on bay area weather, today would be a great day for it. >> you've got all sorts of conditions today. we had the storm overnight and early this morning, partial clear, lots of clearing during the afternoon hours. as you look at live doppler 7, you can see very calm conditions here in the bay area, although we do expect another storm tonight. meanwhile to our east moving to the sierra and the sierra foothills, a line of powerful thunderstorms which wreaked havoc over in the central valley this afternoon, prompting tornado warnings. so we've still got these thunderstorms and snow is still falling in the sierra. speaking of the sierra, a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 6:00 tomorrow evening. we expect another 4 to 8 inches of snow above 6500 feet, up to a foot of snow along the crest and chain controls and travel delays are likely. back to the bay area tonight,

late tonight we'll see the rain moving in again. another storm and overnight lows will be generally in the low 50s. we'll see some periods of heavy rainfall during the overnight hours leading into the morning commute, so if you're a morning commuter, bear that in mind. you may need a little extra time. by afternoon tomorrow that storm will have pretty much broken up into just scattered showers and we'll see some sunshine in the afternoon hours with high temperatures ranging from upper 50s at the coast to mainly low 60s near the bay and inland. let's look at our rain chances over the next seven days. there's a 100% chance of rain tomorrow, zero on thursday. back up to almost 100% on friday when that next big storm comes in. dropping off to only a 20% chance on saturday. we may get some showers, light rain on sunday and monday. 60% chance, 30% chance and near zero next tuesday. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. tonight and tomorrow's storm ranks 2 on the storm impact scale, a storm of moderate intensity. friday's storm will also rank 2, it will be wet and windy. saturday, sunday and monday we have rain activity ranking only

apple is going red with its new addition to the iphone family. they just unveiled a special red version of the iphone 7 and the 7 plus. all of this is for charity. the special edition iphones commemorate the ten-year partnership between apple and project red. that's an organization that helps fight aids. the red phones start at $749 and go on sale on friday. apple is also cutting prices on two ipad models, the old ipad air 2 is now simply called the ipad. that sells for $329, down $70. the ipad mini, the mini 4 is $100 cheaper. ipad sales have dropped almost 20% in the past year. snagging a reservation at an exclusive wine country

restaurant just got a little easier. the french laundry is now taking reservations through june 30th. the famous yountville restaurant is opening up seating in advance to give more guests an opportunity to book a table. according to the website, prepaid reservations start at $330 a person. an environmental health group put out a warning about a favorite children's snack. animal crackers. >> michael finney has more. >> like you want to hear this, right? >> adults like animal crackers too. >> oh, i know, i know. that's what i'm saying. the center for environmental health in oakland said it tested several brands of animal crackers and ginger snaps. the group said it detected high levels of acitamide in this whole grain variety and lower levels in other brands. the chemical can cause cancer and children are the most vulnerable. it issued a notice of violation

to several retailers saying they had failed to post warnings of potential exposure. we reached out to the california grocers association but did not hear back. walgreens issued a statement telling us the safety of our products is of highest importance to us. we just received this information today and will thoroughly review the organization's research. did you ever park in a huge lot or parking garage and have trouble finding your car? google maps now has a feature that will help you find your car so that won't happen again and it could actually warn you when your meter is expiring. it works by pinning your car's location onto a digital map. the app also lets you enter the amount of time on your parking meter. the app will warn you when the meter is about to expire. however, they say they will not pay if you get a ticket. more and more retailers are offering you door-to-door delivery. now you can add one more, costco. costco is teaming up with delivery giant shipped to bring the big box to your doorstep.

police spoke with leslie brinkley. >> and she is there live. police say this started with an argument between a man and a woman? >> reporter: that's exactly right. a heated argument, they said, between a man and a woman in their early 40s. it started in an office building just adjacent to me here. let's take a look at our sky 7 video. from that you can see at 400 penobscot that the man showed up. there's a black pickup truck believed to be involved. the woman apparently had a restraining order against him. as that argument escalated, someone called the police. the man started chasing the woman with a gun in his hand and he fired it once as he ran after her about two blocks through one parking lot, across the street, into another office park parking lot on saginaw. that's where police cornered him. the man was waving a firearm, police told me, pointing it at himself. simultaneously the man fired one shot as
