breaking news coming out of oakland, and a massive fire happening now on the mead avenue and san pablo avenue. sky that just got to the scene, and you can see flames shooting out of the building there, and it looks like a three-story building. you can see ladder trucks, and we have very little information. we are trying to work on contacting the fire department and seeing if anybody was injured possibly in this fire, or if this building had occupants or if anybody lives there, and we don't know what type of building this is, but a huge fire they are dealing with right now, and this is going to be affecting homes in the nearby area, i am sure as well, when you see such a large fire like this we usually have evacuations in the neighborhood. can you see how many fire trucks are out there, really on all sides of the building, numerous police cars, fire trucks, trying to deal with the situation. again, a very large building.
6:22 am
seems to be at least three stories where flames are shooting out of the top. you can see the massive plume of smoke as well. i have been checking social media and monitoring twitter, and i can tell you folks all across oakland have been seeing this fire from several blocks away, so it's something you can see if you are waking up in oakland in the area, you are likely seeing and hearing the fire trucks out there, and the whole team working on this trying to get better information on street closures and if anybody was hurt at all, we will anybody was hurt at all, we will stay on top
6:25 am
we are back at 6:25. we are watching this huge fire that is happening in a building that we believe to be at least part of it, an apartment complex that is at this point still out of control. this is the scene that we are seeing live from sky 7 this morning, as you can see on the screen, this is mead and san pablo area. >> there are several nonprofits here, east bay recovery project, and project pride, and we believe this could be partially residential and partial
6:26 am
apartment complex. what are you seeing? >> checking social media, and it looks like at this point the roof has been compromised, so they are actually getting some of those fire crews out of harm's way right now. that's according to a very active twitter account that we monitor here. it looks like there may be rescues involved with this, too. reggie, you mentioned this is possibly a residential building, so that could be in line there with some of the rescues that may be happening. you can see just how many fire trucks are surrounding the entire building, and the flames look like the roof could be at risk of collapsing, so you can see the fire trucks trying to get the water on the roof instead of actually having people standing on the roof itself. sounds like some of the firefighters are getting out of the building right now, guys. >> seven minutes ago, jessica, we were learning crews may be being withdrawn from the building because of the roof and the floor are compromised and i know you were just talking about that. this is officially a four-alarm
6:27 am
fire, and there's heavy fire on the third floor and they were performing searches 16 minutes ago. >> and you can see at the bottom of the screen, and they are using flashlights pointing at some of the windows, and it's difficult to tell if this was occupied or if they wre able to get out anybody, and it was not too long we saw the devastating fire of the ghost ship fire. the firefighters wish to get everybody out who may be in there, and they are thinking about the safety of the firefighters. they had to pull out of the building because it's too dangerous to fight it from the inside right now. >> we will keep monitoring this. >> we will keep monitoring this. go
6:30 am
we are tracking this breaking news right now at 6:30. a major fire raging out of control in oakland right now, and we are bringing you this from sky 7, and it's at meade and san pablo avenue. >> firefighters have been out of the building now for the past few minutes. they are just fighting it right now from the outside. as you can see, this is very much out of control.
6:31 am
we have not been able to confirm what this building is exactly. we do have some reason to believe that it is a residential building, but we don't know if there was anybody inside at the time the fire started or if the fire department made any rescues this morning yet. >> it's a three-story building and there are other residential buildings in this area and that's what is leading us to believe this could be apartments there, and we are hearing there may be some rescues in the area, and we don't know if anybody was hurt and we have reason to believe there may have been a few folks injured, and we are trying to confirm that information. i am seeing on social media a lot of people in the area that are seeing this fire from nearby from a few blocks away, and i think before the commercial break, reggie, you were talking about the big oakland fire at the warehouse that had so many injuries and deaths, and a lot of people talking about that as well on social media this morning. remembering that, hitting close to home, this huge four-alarm
6:32 am
fire is happening in oakland. another big blaze that firefighters are dealing with this morning. >> only a few months ago that we had the awful fire with the ghost ship fire, and it would not surprise me if many of the firefighters here today worked that fire, and so it will be on the minds of a lot of people. if anybody was inside the building, they were able to get out because it's looks bad. >> this i visible from other parts of the east bay. one of our abc7 employees that lived in the east bay on the ground showing us what it looks like right now. you can see the flames shooting up out of the roof and the roof seems to be completely compromised and gone at this point as the flames shoot up into the air. >> it looks residential from this angle. and we are talking about traffic impacts and how the weather is impacting this. how does we look as far as the
6:33 am
winds go? >> the winds are a factor, and they are blowing at at least 15 miles per hour from northwest to southeast. it's going to be over into lake merrick, and the housing in that area. now that they pushed through the roof, they are feeding on the fresh oxygen that is being pumped in by the winds pushing at about 15 miles per hour, and that's an added hazard that the firemen and women will have to deal with at this fire. >> alexis, and this is very early in the morning and it's a res denyti residential area, and is it having an affect? >> it is. it was originally reported around market street and meade, and then they said it is closer to market street and san pablo, and that's a major cut through that area, and it's west of lake
6:34 am
merit, and north of 880 and just to the west of 980, so sort of in the little triangle there. i am seeing red there, and not a huge backup on market but it's spilling over on to san pablo avenue, so avoid this area and it's likely going to be a long-term situation and it's going to get worse as the morning continues. >> alexis, thank you very much. can you see the firefighters battling this from the ladder trucks. at this point we do not think they are able to be inside. it sounds like they were at one point and then were told they had to get out because the floors and the roof were becoming compromised and it was putting the crews in danger. they are on all sides of the building trying to get as much under control as they can. >> i have been trying to count how many fire trucks are out there, and you can see three
6:35 am
ladder trucks battling it right now, and there are fire trucks up and down the streets next to the building, obviously monitoring flames or hot spots, and we want to avoid fire jumping from one building to another because there are many homes on these streets as well. >> if you look at the map of exactly where this is located, san pablo avenue and meade avenue, it's mixed. there are nonprofits here, and east bay community project here, and save a live wellness center, and then residential areas as well, and apartment buildings. when you look at the street view of what is going on here, it looks to be a residential building. we are pulling out and showing you another vantage point here, and this is from the camera and you can see from that far away, you can see the red and orange flames, that plume of smoke that is rising, and the ladder trucks are pouring water from above
6:36 am
right now. >> it appears as if the traffic is moving on the highway at least, close by, without a lot of 6:35 in the morning. this is going to catch peoples' eye. that's a huge plume of smoke, and a lot of people work and live in this area. that's a picture from the emeryville camera, and it's a distance away and we are zooming in as close as we can get. this is sky 7 above the fire, and it gives you an idea of how big the fire is and how big the building is. >> the concern is the roof will cave-in and make the situation worse. they were told to get out of the building, not fighting it from the inside but fighting it defensively from the ladder trucks and that's all they can do at this point, just hoping it doesn't totally collapse in. they have been fighting this for
6:37 am
at least half an hour at this point. >> we are looking at where this is located. this is close to mccarmen's high school, west of 980. we are hearing multiple rescues are being made, and the company is stretching hose lines to mullab multiple floors, and the roof and floors are too unstable and you can see how safe it would have been for firefighters to be in this situation. >> and alexis is getting a good description of where this is, and on this map it gives you an idea of where the highways are in connection to the burning fire, and as she was mentioning, this is an area a lot of people would use as a cut through to get to the highway. she's saying it's a little backed up, but we expect that probably to build. this is going to be something that everybody who is in oakland is going to see, especially as
6:38 am
it gets more light, because the smoke is dominating the skyline right now and the fire is burning pretty bright at this point, and they really don't have this under control. >> again, we will bring you back to sky 7 so you can see what is going on here. we are seeing smoke coming off of this right now. before we could see the entire thing aglow with those hot flames. right now we are just seeing the huge plume of smoke as they continue to pour water from above, and you can see how far back the emergency crews were, and police cars blocking off streets in the surrounding areas as firefighters work to get it under control. >> we talked about the possibility of people getting hurt in this fire and that earlier it seemed to be that they were actively rescuing people from this building. i have been checking here on twitter and trying to find out exactly what type of building this is, and we have said it seems to be an apartment complex, and i am seeing some
6:39 am
pictures from the ground people are posting and it seems to confirm that it could be an apartment complex. certainly does look like one, but we are trying to get the official word on that, and that would be in line with getting some of these people out of the building, especially it being such a massive fire, and then the possibility that this roof could just collapse in at any moment. >> i am also looking at the images, jessica. it does look like a residential building. you can see the apartment complexes, some with bay windows and you can see fire escapes leading down from some of the windows and these are images taken early on as it appears the third floor began to burn, probably taken about half an hour ago. >> as we talk about the possibility of a roof caving in at this point, it just looks like the roof is gone. you can see the huge hole in the middle of this very large building, really only some of those side areas of the roof intact still, but it's just a
6:40 am
giant hole this smoke, this huge plume of smoke can be seen for miles is just shooting out of the top there with still very large flames coming from the inside of the building. no word on a cause yet. we have not gotten any clue on how this thing began, but we know it started about 6:00, 6:10, so they have been fightin this for 30 minutes a. fo four-alarm fire. >> and they tweeted this out, >> and they tweeted this out, immediat looks like three floors there. >> that's what i counted earlier, too, reggie. >> and it looks like they were using a big flashlight to -- i can still see it at the bottom
6:41 am
of the screen, and they keep -- no, that's not a flashlight. >> those, i think are ground crews trying to get to those windows. >> right. so they keep focusing on that one window with a flashlight and then skirting it with a hose. not sure what is going on there. we have not seen from sky 7 any active rescues going on, so at this point we are just hoping, if there was anybody inside, was able to get out prior to us rolling on this live. >> we do want to reemphasize, there were preliminary results making multiple rescues before firefighters had to with draw because it was too dangerous for them to be inside, and before they did with draw they were stretching rescues on multiple floors to where the fire broke out high up in the building. >> as we mentioned, this is on 26th street and san pablo.
6:42 am
we see fire trucks and we see ambulances. we see police departments there as well on all sides of the building in this area that does seem to have, and natasha, you have been mentioning this throughout the morning, it's different types of buildings, and this could be a very large apartment building, and the crews are all along the streets because it's right at the corner. we see crews along all sides and obviously just trying to make sure that this fire doesn't nearby buildings. >> we have an abc7 crew reporter, amy hollyfield on her way. all you see is the massive black plume of smoke, and want to check in with alexis right now, and show you the view from emeryville. >> we have spun our emeryville
6:43 am
camera around, and this is how big the fire is, and you can see it from all the way over there. this is on the other side of 580 and 880, and right in between the two of those. just west of 980, and we got the updated location, and it's more around the area of san pablo avenue and 26th street. they are all really in the same area, pretty much in that triangle there, just to the west of 980, and i am seeing red on the surface streets, but as far as an impact on the main highways like 580 if you are coming from emeryville, folks may be slowing down to check out the plume of black smoke and the flames, but not seeing any delays on the interstates, but just avoid the area, aspecir the surface streets if you can. >> and this is live pictures from sky 7. we are getting a little more
6:44 am
light, so we are able to see the building a little more, and zooming in to just -- you can see what appears to be a large hole in part of these buildings as the fire comes right through them. we don't have a cause right now. we know it's a four alarm fire, and it's too dangerous for the firefighters to attack from inside and so they are having to rely on their ladder trucks and to hit this just from the outside, from the ground at this point, it's too unstable a building, and they say the floors and the roof have become compromised so they are not able to allow crews to go in there. we are waiting to hear confirmation they were able to get people out if there were people in there to begin with. >> when they made the decision to with draw from the roof, and take a more defensive stance against this fire, that was 25 minutes ago.
6:45 am
now, reggie and natasha, it looks like from what i have been watching, they are really focusing on the sides of the building there. reggie you were observing they keep focusing on some of the windows, and no word here yet on the stability of some of the outer walls, but i imagine from just covering large fires like this in the past that now the concern may be some of those outside walls as well, they don't want to collapse. the size of the whole could be a total loss of the building. >> before there was a warehouse fire not too long ago where it was a building under construction, and that building was a total loss, and it also affected some of the nearby buildings. it didn't take very long for it didn't take very long for that building to come down.
6:46 am
>> and many of those firefighters responding responded to the ghost ship fire a short time ago, and then dealing with this large building, a four-alarm fire. on social media so many people talking about waking up this morning in oakland and seeing this huge fire, really devastating for a lot of folks that live in oakland and have the memory of the ghost ship fire and seeing that and now waking up just a short few months after the ghost ship fire, and this big blaze happening. it can be seen for miles. our viewers are tweeting us and telling us they are waking up and seeing this, and seeing that huge plume of smoke for many blocks in either direction. >> i am wonder ting if we can pl up the ipad here, and i am talking to our producer, and you are thinking about what was going on here, and there were
6:47 am
reports multiple rescues under way half an hour ago before firefighters were forced to pull out of the area. it does appear very much to be an apartment complex, and we are not sure if it was occupied at the time and we are still waiting for confirmation on that, and you hope everybody was able to make it out okay, and a potentially devastating situation unfolding right now. this is amy hollyfield pulling up, and you can see the giant plume of black smoke there. this is the first look at what this is the first look at what the
6:50 am
we are back at 6:50, and you can see the four-alarm fire burning out of control in oakland. with more daylight you are able to see where this is in the neighborhood, and it looks to be a three-story building that has been burning now for more than half an hour and we have been watching this as firefighters have had to pull out of the building. we understand in the last few minutes they have called saying officially the roof collapsed and now we are getting a closer look and you can see that is true. this is the reason why the firefighters had to get out of there quickly because they were on the roof and that is compromised and now they have to fight it from the ground and
6:51 am
ladders. >> and we are getting information as to what are the addresses, and it looks to be some sort of drug or alcohol rehab center, and 2545 is a non-profit called project pride. >> i have project pride pulled up on my computer and it looks like project pride helps women and children, and it's a r residential program, and there may have been people living inside, which is what we have been reporting throughout the morning that it looks like a residential space, and if that's in line for the address we for project pride, they have people living inside the building as part of the non-profit and this is the work they do. you can see how far away the huge plume of smoke is rising. you can see the fire from many miles away. >> we have been checking in with
6:52 am
mike and alexis this morning, mike showing how the weather could affect the ability to put out the fight, and it's windy this morning, mike. >> yeah, it's 15 miles per hour sustained, and you can see the smoke is just above the ground. it could make it down to lake merit on the northern side. the plume is fanning out as it moves away from its origination over the fire. once that roof collapsed that really opened up the entire structure to all that fresh fuel if you will in the oxygen, so this thing is by no means going to choke itself off, and it will to choke itself off, and it will get fed by can you see the flag, when you get a flag that size it's about
6:53 am
a 15 to 20 miles per hour, and that's what we are seeing around the reports of that building on fire. >> and amy hollyfield was tweeting as she pulled up and she joins us live. what are you seeing? >> reporter: we just saw pieces of the building falling from this fire. you can see they have got water on it from up above, but they have pulled their firefighters out and that's why we see so many out on the streets and we see them rolling up their hose because we have been told the building is in compromise and it's not safe for them to go in there, and can you see why from the images of the huge fire that is not showing any sign of letting up anytime soon. the call came in a little after 6:00, 6:10 to come to san pablo and mead. there's so much smoke coming out of the area. surely alarming for people as they wake up this morning and
