good morning on thursday. i'm kendis gibson. >> here are some of the top headlines we're following on "world news now." the spotlight on russian election meddling shifts to the senate today as the first hearing gets under way. the senators leading the investigation are vowing to set aside politics and work hand in hand. we have a full report coming up. the court order blocking the latest travel ban from the trump administration has now been extended. a federal judge in hawaii made the decision. he had ruled the policy discriminates against muslims. at least 13 members of a church group were killed when their van collided head-on with a pickup truck in texas. the driver of the pickup and another were injured. federal investigators are looking into it. >> a vote is set, aimed at toning down the north carolina

controversial bathroom law and could resolve a standoff. over the restriction for transgender people, but gay rights activists say the compromised bill doesn't go far enough. those are some of the top stories on this thursday, march 30th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." hi, everyone. start this half-hour with the investigation into russian interference in the presidential election taking center stage today again, but this time in the senate. >> the senate intelligence committee is holding its first hearing on the matter today. after its leading members from both parties held a joint appearance and vowed to work together. >> some senators heard from a russian activist who was allegedly poisoned by the russian government. vladamir kara-murza told the panel that president vladamir putin thinks it's okay to interfere with foreign elections. >> abc's mary bruce has more on investigations and the embattled chair of the house intelligence committee. >> reporter: even some

melania trump attended international women of courage event at the state department. 13 women from around the world were celebrated for their courage and leadership. mrs. trump said many of them risked their lives to fight against injustice. >> together, we must declare that the era of allowing the brutality against women and children is over. while affirming the time for empowering women around the world is now. >> more than 100 women from 60 countries have been recognized with courage awards over the past decade. this year's recipients will take part in an exchange program in the u.s. a suicide bombing in baghdad has left 15 people dead and 45 others injured. the attack happened at a police checkpoint. iraqi officials say the bomber used an oil tanker carrying explosives. the dead include three police officers, no one has claimed responsibility, but isis has

conducted similar attacks in that area. iraqi forces are now trying to drive isis out of western mosul. activists in syria, meanwhile, say there has been an air raid and dozens of air strikes both in and around damascus. reports say as many as a dozen people have been killed. there is also word that the attack on damascus involved chlorine gas. use of chlorine is banned under the chemical weapons convention. american airlines flight landed safely in albuquerque, but this despite an emergency in the cockpit that resulted in the death of the plane's co-pilot. now just before landing the pilot declared that emergency citing medical issue. he called the tower to make sure that help was ready when the plane got on the ground. listen. >> tower american, 1353. we'd like to have the crew meet us on landing. we're going to bravo one. >> the pilot sounded so calm there. paramedics performed cpr on the co-pilot more than half an hour. despite the effort the man was

declared dead. at this point it remains unclear what the medical condition he suffered. severe storms in texas have claimed two more lives. two boys ages 11 and 12, were electrocuted by downed power lines last night while playing in a public park. the wires were still arcing when the firefighters arrived. and also, started a small grass fire. earlier in the day, from one end of texas to the other, and in neighboring states wind ask tornadoes damaged homes and vehicles. there is also flooding from the heavy rain in parts of texas and oklahoma. >> that storm system, now moving east. >> yeah, get the forecast now from accuweather, justin povick. justin. kendis, diane, good morning to you. tracking more severe weather on this thursday. this go around, the tennessee valley, the deep south, and also the gulf coast states. heavy rain, flooding, damaging wind, hail, tornados all going to be possible. especially as we work our way throughout the afternoon and

you are looking at some of brockton massachusetts' bravest in action. firefighters caught on camera risking their lives to save a man from burning apartment building. the flames trapped the 82-year-old man on a third-floor balcony. firefighters were able to carry him to safety. he escaped with just minor injuries. the crew says they happened to be on a nearby other job. they spotted the smoke even before the first alarm came in. >> they didn't seem to be any panic at all how quickly they were coming down. calmly. also, amazing the fact that they did respond so quickly. the flames are already that big. >> absolutely. good thing they got there in time. privacy advocates are still reeling from this week's vote in the house overturning regulations protecting internet
