festival. what went wrong? and good monday morning to you. i'm adrienne bankert in for diane macedo. >> and i'm kendis gibson. it has been a restless night in the south where a severe weather outbreak is under way. some 30 million americans in that zone throughout tonight. >> and at this hour the radar shows the system blanketing mississippi and now heading east toward alabama and georgia. >> those storms are packing torrential rains, high winds, dangerous hail. some of the scenes that we've seen overnight and spawning at least four reported tornadoes including one that ripped apart a mobile home in louisiana killing a mother and her young daughter. this morning the south on high alert. the heavy rains in mississippi causing severe flooding. overnight deputies using boats to rescue people from their homes. the howling winds and hail in

central louisiana tearing off a tree limb. sparks flying as it comes in contact with power lines. >> tornado over there. you see it? >> reporter: near baton rouge a possible twister flipping this mobile home killing a woman and her 3-year-old daughter. >> she was very lovable, the love of my life, my daughter, everything. >> reporter: the house on its side, toys, furniture scattered in the yard and family members gathering at the scene remembering their loved ones. >> we're going to be a closer family. look at your family. look at your kids, call them wherever they're at and just tell them, i love you. because you never know. with these freak storms, you never know. >> that's a warning a lot of people should remember because those storms could cause plenty of problems again. >> yes, today is going to be a big day. accuweather's paul williams has been tracking the system. good morning, paul. >> good morning, kendis, adrienne. look for stormy conditions to continue in the deep south affecting atlanta, tennessee,

all of alabama going into mississippi, and we're looking for it to target new orleans as well, so louisiana not quite out of the woods yet, at least not all of the parishes. look for an outbreak of thunderstorms to rumble throughout the carolinas down towards northern florida right into the mid-mississippi valley region and then reaching further north into the ohio valley region. but where is the targeted area of the worst weather? we're expecting it from mobile to atlanta along 65, i-20 and i-10. four main concerns, damaging winds between up to 40 to 55 or more miles per hour. large hail, isolated tornadoes and flash flooding and then more flooding into the carolinas for monday night. kendis, adrienne. >> all right, so several states have to be on the lookout, paul. we're going to turn now to politics and we're learning overnight that president trump's son-in-law as well as his senior adviser jared kushner is visiting iraq. >> a top white house adviser says he was invited to make the trip by general joseph dunford.

the exact purpose not clear but kushner's role at the white house has been expanding. president trump facing a critical week that includes a potentially uncomfortable face-to-face meeting with the president of china. >> then on the domestic front the president is still holding out hope for a deal on health care all while republicans and democrats prepare to pull out all the stops in the showdown over the supreme court. abc's lana zak has the latest from washington. lana, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kendis. good morning, adrienne. from the so-called nuclear option being debated in the senate to very real nuclear diplomacy with china the political happenings have the potential to change the course of history. today the senate judiciary committee is planning to vote on supreme court nominee neal gorsuch. >> what i can tell you is that neal gorsuch will be confirmed this week. >> reporter: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is threatening to do whatever it takes to break a filibuster by democrats. but it's not yet clear if he'll need to. three democrats have announced they will vote for gorsuch. the white house needs five more

defectors to avoid the so-called nuclear option. but there are real nukes at stake in the growing tensions with north korea. that issue, a critical agenda item in the upcoming visit of china's president xi jinping. the meeting already potentially contentious after some of the president's campaign rhetoric. >> we can't continue to allow china to rape our country, and that's what they're doing. >> reporter: and now in an interview with "the financial times," president trump said china will either decide to help us with north korea or they won't implying that the u.s. may have to act alone but north korea is doing its own saber rattling. one north korean official threatening, if you bring out a thrive to attack us, we will take out a sword. while over a round of golf with senator rand paul, the president's negotiations on health care appear to be continuing. >> i remain very optimistic that we will get it. >> reporter: don't be deceived into thinking there will be a movement on health care any time soon, kendis and adrienne. that issue continues to divide republicans as does russia

though a new poll out shows a majority of americans favor an independent investigation. >> quite a busy week indeed in d.c., thank you. to colombia now where rescuers are literally using their bare hands to try to find survivors after mudslides tore through entire towns. the avalanche of water and mud killing at least 250 people including dozens of children and wiped away homes leaving very little behind there. hundreds of aid workers have been dispatched to deliver fresh water and supplies to stranded survivors. but more heavy rain could complicate the dire search and rescue efforts in that south american country. and wikileaks founder julian assange will likely remain in the safety of the ecuadorian embassy in london. that's because ecuador's ruling party candidate won the presidential election runoff. the winner had promised to let assange stay at the embassy where he's been holed up since he was granted asylum back in 2012, but the losing candidate had vowed to evict him. and the white house went all blue overnight.

blocks away from the world's tallest building, the burj khalifa. dubai has seen several high-rise fires in the last several years. no injuries in today's inferno. boston police hunting for two gunmen who shot a little boy apparently while trying to kill his father. the child said to be about 5 or 6 years old was shot in the back last night while leaving home with his family. investigators say the little boy's father was intended to be the target. the child in stable condition, and we're told he will recover from his injuries. police asking the public to step up and help them, and they had some strong words for the shooters. >> you missed your target. you hit a 5-year-old little boy. you're not that tough. >> the child's name has not been released. police say he is alert and again will be okay. a hotel in southern michigan is installing carbon monoxide detectors following a fatal poisoning. a 13-year-old died there after inhaling carbon monoxide at a pool party. six other people, mostly kids,

were hospitalized after the incident. they've all been treated and released. investigators say the cause was a broken pool heater which was pumping carbon monoxide into the air. >> yeah, they had to treat police officers and first responders, hotel workers there too. ford has issued its third recall in just one week, this time for one of its most popular pickup trucks recalling more than 52,000 2017 f-250 because the trucks could continue to move even after the driver shifts out of park. ford says there are no reports of injuries or accidents. last week ford recalled more than half a million other vehicles over faulty door latches and engine fire risks and again that was the cars moved even after they were shifted into park. now to a ferrari that was once owned by president trump and has sold at auction for a record price. trump bought the 2007 ferrari f-430 coupe new, brand-new. he sold it four years later, and it was sold again over the weekend for $270,000.

assault of a 15-year-old girl. a 14-year-old boy is in jail today facing a string of charges in last month's attack. investigators say dozens of people watched the assault live online, but nobody called police. authorities are considering charges against those viewers. fox news host bill o'reilly is receiving support from his bosses amid reports of costly harassment claims. a "new york times" investigation found o'reilly and 21st century fox paid $13 million to settle five sexual harassment cases against him. now, fox says o'reilly denies the merits of the claims, and he released a statement saying he settled the cases to spare his children. the hunt is on in massachusetts for a man whose theft of an suv is caught on camera, but watch this. he got into the vehicle while the driver was pumping her gas. the woman tried to stop him spraying him with fuel. police say the suspect is 32-year-old wiliam tighe. he's now facing carjacking and assault and battery charges. the suv has been recovered.

they're now looking for him. an explosion is under investigation this morning. that blast going off at a carnival. this is all near paris. it left 18 people injured including 3 children. investigators say gasoline used to light a bonfire was mishandled. most of the injured were hit by burning wood. five people suffered serious injuries. they're expected to recover. and let's call this dog back here in the states lucky after she was rescued from a well near los angeles. she fell into the 30-foot-hole while walking around with her owners. lucy was down there for four hours before firefighters brought her to the surface. they say lucy's story makes a good point that owners should keep their dogs on a leash. to sports now, and there is opening day baseball from coast to coast today. >> and tonight gonzaga plays north carolina for the men's basketball national title. they've already awarded the women's trophy as we hear from

area, and investigators are trying to figure out what started it. two people out of their house this morning after their house this morning after their fire caught home in the house did not have cell service so the victims could not call for help on their own and neighbors saw the fire and called, and firefighters made it to the scene but could not save the house and they blame that on the steep terrain. the two people and their dog inside made it out okay. a devastating death for a concord family. a 1-year-old girl died after finding her unconscious in a backyard swimming pool. the police searched the property after her family called and record her missing. paramedics rushed her to the hospital and she did not survive. a motorcyclist is dead after
