record breaking storms this past winter now costs california record breaking money in repairs. the single most expensive job is here in the bay area. thank you for joining us. >> 30 million, that's the price tag for fixing a section of highway 35. you know it as skyline boulevard, a section slid downhill back in february. abc 7 is live in santa cruz with eye opening numbers, matt? >> reporter: the storm damage is very real and takes real money to fix it all. we were on the way to skyline boulevard, on black road right

now, ran into the road closed sign. they told me they are doing their own storm damage repairs. they are putting back up some poles knocked down by mud slides in the most recent storms. all of this is, of course, taking money, but when you're talking about the big dollars, this is it. this is the most expensive job in california according to the l.a. times. the section of skyline boulevard, known as highway 35, washed out, estimated to cost $29.5 million just to fix this. they are working on several designs before there's a firm dollar amount. this is new video from this morning. we drove uk black road and there was washouts and slides. all that damage adds up to a lot of money in repairs. the "l.a. times" reports state officials estimate it costs, get this, 860 million to repair the roads, bridges, and highways here in california. damage during the winter weather, over the week, fema

will help pay for repairs, but no word how much money that will be, and, of course people who live in the mountains like this person who drove up here and hit the roadblock, they have to figure out how to get around it. this road will not reopen until at least 3:00 later today. matt keller, abc 7 news. >> thank you. santa bay city council considers a move to help flood victims get back on their feet. they are asking for approval to donanate up to 30 cars that wou be distributed to victims who lost theirs in the february flood. the need is great. hundreds of cars are damaged or totally destroyed. the counsel decides in the meeting set to start at 1:30 this afternoon. san fransisco water officials are taking steps to reduce street flooding. there is opposition. according to the examiner, cal trans does not want to work on two project, one at the cul-de-sac and one at 17th and fulsom streets.

the examiner reports the agency says no gnatter wh ematter what those areas are always flood prone. happening now, bay area leaders are gathering to discuss what to do when the big one hits. just this morning, we had a 2.9 magnitude quake. we are live at the summit at fort mason, kate? >> reporter: there are speakers here from all over the country trying to teach local officials and organizations how to better prepare for when the big earthquake does hit the bay area. after the 2014 napa earthquake, governor brown declared a state of emergency. the 6.0 magnitude quake injury 00 people and cost millionings of dollars in damage. >> this is essential. >> they responded to napa hours after the quake. >> prepared meals, transported

those into napa, and so that preparedness meant we were ready to go with the volunteers and equipment in place where they needed it. >> i get it from an emergency preparedness standpoint. >> reporter: this week, he and other experts are meeting for the epicenter confernce to ensure they are ready to help bay area residents. the earthquake was a 6.9 magnitude near santa cruz, 60 killed, and thousands more injured. according to the usgs, there is a 63% chance a magnitude 6.7 earthquake will occur along one of the bay areas main fault lines in 30 years and a 99% for california overall. >> the disaster's teach us the first responders are likely to be your neighbor, not a police officer or firefighter, so get involved in your neighborhood, know your neighbors, find out who may need extra help in a

mike? >> hi, everybody. good morning. we'll start by opening the weather window with an idea what to expect today. hazy out there. one where temperatures, because of the lid on the atmosphere, about 4-7 degrees warmer than average. all right, the entire pattern begins to change thursday with our first storm. it's a live storm. it gets us going. it's an advertiser, if you will. light to moderate showers into the evening hours, becoming breezy throughout the day also. this sets the stage for a moderate storm, a 2 on the storm impact scale. isolated thunderstorms and wind getting near damaging speeds. 30-50 miles per hour. let's look at that and rain totals throughout the weekend coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. >> thank you. a woman killed hours ago in a car with two young children inside. police tell us they were called to 29th street at 8:40 this

morning on a call of shots fired. they taped off the crime scene. the woman had a gunshot wound inside an suv. two children were inside unharmed. police say it appears to be a targeted shooting, but they would not say why. police are looking for the person who stabbed two people shortly after midnight. police say both victims are expected to survive. they're homeless, and police don't know why they were attacked. officers collected evidence for hours at crime scenes including locust street. when it comes to a description of the suspect, they do not have much to go on. >> palo alto police look for a prowler who struck twice last night. police say the first incident was on yale street when the man rang the doorbell of a woman's home and walked away after she asked what he wanted. the second on college avenue. a man seen standing in the bushing trying to look inside a

bedroom woman. he's described to be in his 40s, 50s, 6'0", and short brown hair. >> san francisco need your help. they are looking for this man who is accused of sexually assaulting women. one woman posted on social media he groped her and since then several others came forward. he ran against her thursday and weeks earlier, he was doing the same thing to another woman. if you see that man, please call fr san francisco police. a young woman charged in connection with the beating death of an 88-year-old san jose woman is set to be in court. 19-year-old jennifer hernandez jimenez is expected to be in court at 1:30. they believe she helped conceal the crime. flo douglas died in october after fighting for her life for several weeks. they charged zachary with the

murder after they say he broke into her home and beat her. she was a pillar in her church and community. they say hate will not stop them from supporting the rights of imgrants and muslims. they believe somebody vandalized a window where he hangs a sanctuary restaurant sign smearing it with human waste. they serve dishes from middle east countries and many of the workers are immigrants. >> they came here. it's a safe place. it should be a safe place for them, for myself, my wife, and our customers, and i won't take them down. >> bite's owner reported the vandalism to the police and office of east bay congresswoman barbara lee. a suspect face to face with police, guns drawn, but turns out that's not his biggest challenge. the video you have just got to see. >> a massive fire erupts in south los angeles. why investigators are guarding the scene around the clock. >> bridging the gender pay gap.

happening now, arson investigators are combing through the rubble of the massive fire in south l.a. just look at it. a broken natural gasline fed the flames at the food processing plant near the l.a. coliseum. 170 firefighters worked to get it under control and watched it throughout the night for hot spots. ncaa considers north

carolina for a host for championships once again after state lawmakers reached a compromise to repeal a law that mandated people using public bathrooms corresponding to their biological sex. the ncaa had pulled seven championships from the state last year saying the new law is far from perfect, but a majority of the board of governors reluctantly voted to allow consideration. san francisco mayor ed lee criticized this saying, quote, this is not a reset of the law, but another scheme that will allow for state-sanctioned discrimination against a community that is already facing intense pressure. look at the next video. a police chase in san diego ended strangely when the suspect got stuck on a fence. >> get on the ground. get on the ground. we have the police dog. >> you see how tense it is late last night, accused of hitting another man, look at this, look what happens. he's to climb over the fence,

hi, there. a fun start this morning, peek-a-boo sunshine with the clouds rolling through. you may have seen a few returns across the north bay, but 16,000 feet, it was bone dry, nothing reaching the ground. you see the hustle and bustle of the ferries this morning, and the cloud clearing out. you need sunglasses the neg two days although it's hazy sun and high clouds from time to time, but spring warmth today and tomorrow. that all stops when the rain rolls in thursday, friday, and saturday. even some thunderstorms possible. windy and coolest friday, saturday, sunday, and monday. here's a look at the bowl of cold air coming straight down from the arctic. right now, it's held up by high pressure pushing the track to the north. a dirty high. that's what we call it when there's high cloud. we see the temperatures, though,

from the high pressure, 70 in antioch. mid 50s and 60s if you are headed out now. you see the haze hanging out there in the east bay hills, looking back towards -- my goodness, how green mount diablo. when was the last time it's been that green? it's been a long time! in that haze, yeah, tree pollen, sorry, mold spores, grass, sorry, something to think about. head out. why not? the temperatures, mid to upper 60s, 71 to 77 degrees for the rest of us, and here's how the daybreaks down. we'll be 50s at the coast for the better part of the afternoon into the evening hours, and upper 60s, but dropping mid-60s at 6:00 at the bay, and upper 50s at 8:00. 70s inland and bay neighborhoods, 69 at 6:00, and 6 61 at 8:00. first pitch at 7:35.

report. yeah. your iphone7 set to be old news pretty soon. apple already ramping up production of the new iphone8 dropping in september. today, the proof is in a bold move made by the giant end listing home from another kpoen now. apple blog reports the company's ordered 70 million organic light panels from samsung. the panels will be used for part of the new iphone screen, which is rumored to have an edge to edge display. apple's said to build a virtual reality function into the camera. yelp dropped big bucks to expand and reach customers and businesses. they paid $20 million to acquire wifi marketing company turnstile analytics. that offers free wifi network for businesses. they plan to use it to expand business for more than just restaurant reviews. they cited two big goals with the acquisition, first, help clients build customer

taking horses around to a new level. >> called hobby horsing. good morning america highlighted this growing craze where people compete in all sorts of things while riding on those horses on a stick. >> what on earth? >> 10,000 athletes in finland are ready to participate. >> it's athletic, kind of. impressing judges on their skill, style, and posture. there's a new documentary about this. it's been aoscar winning documentary maker, showing how riders decorate their horses, name them, drape blankets on them at night so they are not cold. >> well, it's interesting. i don't know which is crazier, this or, you know, the game that -- >> i'm a hard core harry potter fan. >> every day.
