the 8-year-old student who was killed as jonathan martinez. and a 9-year-old boy is still hospitalized, though he is now stable. they're not identifying him. the boys were shot when a gunman came into the special education classroom this morning. >> cedric got out of the classroom, without saying anything armed with a large caliber revolver opened fire on his wife. she was killed in that exchange. there are two students in the classroom that were behind the teacher that were struck by gunfire. >> police have just revealed the 53-year-old man, cedric anderson, was the gunman. he was the hospital of special ed teacher, 53-year-old karen elaine smith, they were separated after just a short marriage. police say he has signed himself in, when to smith's classroom, shot and killed her, and then shot himself. the two students were standing behind the teacher. the terror began just before 10:30 this morning.

fired first. we go live to fremont police head quarters were a police spokesperson is giving an update. sergio? >> that update is going on right now. you can see over my shoulder, there is a bunch of reporters that are surrounding a man there. that is a spokesperson for the police department. the very basic piece of information he's given so far is basically confirming what the attorney told us this afternoon, that suspect fired at fremont police officers first. neighbor's describe an intense effort by police, a helicopter was called in, and k9 officers were on scene this happened on the other end of this backyard fence. >> we heard gunshots, four gunshots. >> her next-door neighbor could also hear the commotion. >> i heard a lot of bullets, calling the people coming out, i don't know how many people, but he said you come out, everything will be okay. >> according to fremont police,

east bay regional park police officers called for a backup after a traffic stop at the nearby 7-eleven. someone inside the vehicle ran out and fremont officers chased him to the back lot of this shopping center. michael reins represents the officers involved, he said one of them spotted the man standing on the back of a u-haul track on the back of the lot. at first the man raised his hands as if surrendering and then seemingly changed his mind. >> they saw this guy with his hands up like this, one officer clearly saw an object in his hand, but all three saw was a muzzle flash. >> he says two officers returned fire but the incident didn't end for some time. they called in the fire department to deploy a drone to see if the suspect's weapon was on the roof of the u-haul or nearby. >> we were too close to the place, we were concerned people would jump into our backyard. this is the third officer-involved shooting in fremont this year.

talked about we have seen a lot of this this past winter. that is homes damaged by falling trees. the wet weather may end soon, but this problem could continue into the summer. we may be well into spring, but mother nature is not done yet. at least when it comes to falling trees. >> very scary. very lucky to be alive. >> reporter: in the oakland hills saturday, several tall eucalyptus trees fell and one hit a house, narrowly missing the people inside, including an infant. in berkeley, another big tree toppled over, knocking out two pg&e power poles near memorial stadium. in concord, a tree crew spent the morning cutting up a large oak limb that punctured several holes in the roof of this house. no one was injured. >> the wind blows these trees over. >> reporter: the high winds and rain were the culprit this time,

down the last temporary shelter for those displaced by the february floods. only five people remained at the seven trees community center when it closed its doors this morning. they have been placed in temporary housing at a hotel, motel or apartment. the housing department helped find more 70 people a place to live in the last week. an unsolved murderer from a year ago has oakland police and the fbi looking for help. today investigators showed abc 7 news new images of a white car, likely a recent model chevy impala that was in the area where brian bull was shot and killed last april. bull was walking home from a night out after he was shot. he was three doors from his home at broadway and piedmont when he was killed. >> any tip is great. there's no tip that's too small. there's no tip that will go uninvestigated. the only bad tip is one not passed over to the oakland

police department. >> police are also looking for a man seen in the area. they released images of him last year but are asking the public to take another look. there's a $30,000 reward offered in the case. the person who sent ransom message to the family of a missing yuba city college student had nothing to do with her disappearance, this according to the sheriff's department who continues to look for alicia yoman. last week her family received a series of texts claiming she was kidnapped. yoman was last seen on march 30th while driving in yuba city. to the united airlines encounter going viral for all the wrong reasons. >> ah! ah! ah! ah! >> what united is taing today about that passenger who was forcibly removed from a flight. >> unbelievable video. also unusual recall. a popular salad mix pulled from the shelves after a disgusting discovery was uncovered inside the container.

viral. controversy after video surfaced showing officers forcibly removing a passenger who didn't want to >> one of those officers has been placed on leave. >> reporter: the screams of a passenger being forcibly removed from the seat by police. his head slamming the armrest, his face limp. >> look what did you to him. >> it was, no, you're going to leave. then he was hoisted out of his seat. >> reporter: the confrontation because he did not want to give up his seat on this sunday night united flight. >> it seemed excessive that's the route they would go. >> reporter: united airlines said they needed to get a four-person crew to louisville and asked for volunteers. when no one accepted, four passengers were selected. according to someone on board, the still unidentified man claimed he was a doctor and did

not want to give up his seat because he wanted to see patients. >> one of the initial officers said are you willing go through this? you're going to get a court record, you're going to go through this trouble to keep your seat? >> reporter: on twitter, the united ceo called the event upsetting. for this passenger, this was not flying the friendly skies of united. >> when flying you do have some rights but not a lot of options when they ask you to get off the plane. you can deny the voucher, ask for a check and to be paid back for costs, you can also take that airline to court. the officer involved in this incident has been put on leave. despite bad headlines, u.s. airlines are getting better grades across the board. airlines are getting better at sticking to schedules. they're losing fewer bags, and

shark back out to the ocean, but it kept washing itself back onshore. a gray whale should be around the sonoma coastline by now. it was first spotted off southern california last week with a piece of metal on its head. volunteers hope to find it so professionals can remove that metal before it dies or disappears. in the water there, jellyfish. a swarm of ret gd jellyfish. the red bell jellyfish are often seen in australia's western waters, but the surfers had said they never saw this many in one area before. a red bell jellyfish sting would be painful but not deadly. i was in australia last year, they have some of the deadlyist critters and creatures, there's a form of jellyfish, the boat captain told me, it may not kill you, but you wish you were dead if it stings you.

well. greg lee takes a closer look at this device and what it does. >> reporter: a minivan speeds down the street with a police car following close behind. then something shoots out from the grill of the police unit and sticks on the suspect's car. watch again. in slow motion. you can see a small projectile landing on the van. >> once we deploy these devices on the vehicle, the officers can start backing off and we can track the vehicle. >> reporter: tustin police say they are the first to use the new technology. using a launcher attached to the front of a police car, an officer can deploy a gps tag from this console. >> gps device on it which allows the dispatchers and our units to track where the vehicle is going. >> officers can pull back the speeding units and track the suspect vehicle and plan the next move. the department is in the process of outfitting its cars and training officers to use the system. they hope this will minimize

overlooking the berkeley campus is a giant concrete block called the big c, a symbol of achievement found at cal. today students are learning about another big c, this time the c refers to community. the big c is a referendum asking students to help fund seven spaces and centers that support and help minority student groups on campus. >> there are centers on this campus doing that job, doing that work. their funding is getting cut drastically every single year with budget cuts. >> reporter: the referendum is asking students to pay $29 per semester, $58 a year to expand their services and hire more people. >> my visceral reaction is i don't like paying more money for anything. >> reporter: so far it appears the referendum may have the support it needs to pass. >> i totally understand why this is so important for us to uplift those who are most marginalized within our campus community. >> reporter: in a 2013 campus climate survey, 1 in 4 students

six homes in all were damaged. good evening. >> thanks for joining us. these million dollar houses had just gone up for sale. they were vacant and vandalized by people who broke in to party. this happened on rosemar avenue in the hills above alum rock. david is there live. these break-in parties go by another name, don't they? >> they do. they're sometimes called flash mob parties. three houses on this street and three others around the corner were targeted. word goes out over social media to come to these vacant houses, they ended up leaving $50,000 in damage. muddy footprints show how the vandals broke down back doors to the garages so they could get inside. all six new houses had the first public showing saturday. that night it's believed a fwrup decided to use them as a party site. street lights were broken to give them cover.
