good morning. i'm diane macedo. >> i'm kendis gibson. some of the top headlines on this tuesday morning on "world news now" -- a community coming together to remember the victims of a shooting at a california elementary school. the apparent murder suicide left a teacher in one of her students dead. another child remains in the hospital. >> the ceo of united airlines says he was upset to see this. a passenger dragged from a flight in chicago. that passenger was asked to get off the united flight to make room for crew members. the department of transportation is now looking into the incident. >> migrant camp in northern france looking like this. destroyed after a massive fire at least 10 people were injured in that blaze. it followed a day of violence at the camp as migrants clashed with each other and then security personnel.

>> alabama's new governor is republican kay ivy, she takes place of robert bentley who resigned and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor campaign violations. violations came to light during an investigation of allege add fair with a top aide. those are just some of our top stories on this tuesday, april 11th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." we start this half-hour with reaction to that san bernardino shooting at an elementary school. >> mourners filled a church overnight to remember school teacher and one of her students. only 8 years old. police say both died at the hands of the teacher's else stranged husband. >> neither the children or parents say they will ever forget yesterday's scene at north park elementary. here is abc's correspondent. >> reporter: the troubling images. young children evacuating an

elementary school after shots rang out. crossing a basketball court in formation. to get to safety. this girl was there for transitional kindergarten. >> i didn't know what was happening. and i just wanted to go home. >> possible active shooter at north park elementary. >> reporter: emergency calls coming in before 10:30 in the morning. authorities say 53-year-old cedric anderson told the front desk he had something to drop off for his wife a teacher. entering the special ed classroom where she taught, shooting and killing karen smith before turning the gun on himself. >> cedric entered the classroom without saying anything. armed with a large caliber resolver. opened fire on his wife. >> reporter: tragically two students caught up in the violence. both shot and rushed to local homes by air and ground. >> my partner is carrying one out to the front, okay. we believe we have the shooter down inside. >> 8-year-old jonathan martinez did not survive. the other student in stable condition. father of a 2nd grader described what he did the moment he heard there was a shooting at his daughter's school. >> i fell to my knees, started saying our fathers and hail marys.

>> heavily armed officers and swat teams rushing to the scene arriving at north park elementary school in san bernardino in minutes. as parents flooded to the school look for answers. >> my son is in 2nd grachltd the teacher sent me a message. you can read it. >> the school a crime scene. some parents able to see their children. they couldn't reach them. not able to hug them. >> oh, my gosh. she doesn't see me. i can see her. looks like they're crying, holding hands. and they look very scared. >> row after row of students moving calmly across school grounds. holding hands. getting on to buses. taken to a safe location before being reunited with their families. authorities are searching the suspect's home in riverside california. meanwhile, emotional images. parents, finding their children, after hours of confusion and desperation. >> this is a tragic event. it is going to take time for our heads, our hearts to heal. >> reporter: authorities are

taking a closer look at the couple's relationship. we recently learned the pair was married just three short months. and that they had recently separated in the last month. >> going to be a tough morning there in southern california. we move on now, the trump administration back pedaling after appearing to suggest a major shift in america's policy on syria. white house press secretary sean spicer initially said president trump may take more military action if syria drops more barrel bombs on civilians. not just chemical ones. and he also seemed to suggest that regime change was inevitable. >> how far is the president willing to go to see bashir al assad out of power there? >> you can't imagine a, a -- stable and peaceful syria with assad as, as in charge. i just don't think that's a scenario that is possible. >> well a white house aide later said the administration's

posture on syria has not changed adding that, the president has the option to act against the regime whenever it's in the national interest. >> for the second time, a judge ruled that a texas voter id law was intentionally written to discriminate against minorities. the judge reached the same conclusion two years ago when she likened the law to a poll tax. an appeals court asked her to re-examine that decision. the texas law requires voters to show one of several forms of identification, but, the state was forced to allow more flexibility for the november elections. >> the supreme court restored conservative tilt as neil gorsuch was sworn in as its newest justice. the ceremony in the white house rose garden followed the builter partisan quite that, that ended with historic rule change in the senate. we also found out how to pronounce, say his last name. gorsuch. gorsuch. now we know. >> reporter: judge neil gorsuch, the 113th person to be sworn into the highest court in the country. >> i neil gorsuch do solemnly swear. >> reporter: gorsuch's confirmation marked the first

major win for the trump administration with congress. >> the most important thing that a president of the united states does is appoint people to the united states supreme court. and i got it done in the first 100 days. that's even nice. >> i am humbled by the trust placed in me today. i will never forget that to whom much is given, much will be expected. >> reporter: it has taken more than a year, the long road to a new supreme court justice was paved with partisan politics. last year, republicans refused to consider president obama's pick to fill the spot. judge merrick garland arguing the next president should choose the nominee. this year, democrats argued gorsuch's record was too conservative and moved to filibuster his nomination. with gorsuch now sworn in, the

supreme court returns to its previous balance. four conservatives, four liberals, justice kennedy as the swing vote. gorsuch could be deciding vote in housing discrimination, church and state separation and same sex rights and a case, colorado baker who refused to bake a wedding cake for a same sex couple. navy instructor will not face criminal charges for the death of a navy seal trainee. the 21-year-old drowned during a pool training exercise last may. now a navy investigation of the incident has fund that the death was not the result of a crime and that no criminal charges will be pursued. the navy's report also indicates that the trainee who died had an enlarged heart. which could have been a contributing factor in his death. >> the body of a northwestern university rower who fell overboard has been recovered. 19-year-old mohammad ramsen one of nine people in the racing shell yesterday morning when he tumbled into the water. crew team members do not wear life jackets or flotation devices they restruct their movement.

wisconsin man allegedly on a do or die mission has intensified. >> police say that the man went on the run last week, but not before sending a 161-page manifesto to the white house. that manifesto has now arrived. abc's adrian bankart has more. >> reporter: the manhunt for this self proclaimed revolutionary expanding. authorities confirming the manifesto with plans of a brutal attack arrived in washington. >> what this individual was proposing was revolution. you know, to, have an armed uprising. jakubowski on the run since tuesday. authorities say he stole 16 high powered handguns, two assault rifles, possibly silencers and set his own car on fire. the suspect's stepfather who did not want to go on camera, said he believes jakubowski is on a do or die mission. while you don't see his face, the person recording the video, appears to sign the envelope containing the manifesto. >> today is the day. >> today is the day. >> so remember this face. >> game time. >> reporter: officials tell us they're speaking with the person on the other side of the camera,

[ screaming ] >> reporter: they are the shocking images of a passenger caught in a travel nightmare. a man visibly shaken as he is yanked. >> come on. come on. >> then dragged off of a united jet by law enforcement. >> oh, my god look what you did to him! >> all after refusing to give up his seat. chicago aviation security officer put on leave. but for many of the passengers, and for many of the millions who have seen this clip, the question is -- how did it get to this point? >> it was surreal. no one expected it to happen

like that. >> reporter: scheduled to leave chicago sunday evening at 5:40. destination louisville, kentucky. when the passengers got on board that the crew started to offer vouchers for a handful of seats. united clarifying the flight was not overbooked it now says it was a crew transport issue claiming passengers were all on board when crew members approached the gate agent. they needed to be in louisville to work on their own flight. four seats would be needed. >> everybody was seated by then. and the fact that they told us we would not leave until four people volunteered. there was just a real sense on the plane that that wasn't right. >> with no takers, a united computer picked four passengers offering them $1,000, the airline says. all complied except for this 69-year-old man who said he is a doctor and needed to get home to treat patients. >> two police come in, in full gear, they tell him that he has to leave the airplane. >> john claussen, the man in the orange shirt sitting in front of the passenger. he saw and heard it all he says. >> how do you react when the police aren't asking questions they're just trying to forcibly

remove the man. i could not believe what i was seeing or hearing. i was in shock. >> so were other passengers. many of them recording as officers dragged the man down the aisle. >> i have to go home. >> minutes later the man slipped back on to the jet before he was removed yet again. united ceo, oscar munoz calling it an upsetting event and saying the airline is reaching out to the man to address and resolve this situation. in a in internal memo, elaborating the man was approached a few more times to gain his compliance. each time he retoed and became more and more disruptive and belligerent. the passenger has yet to comment. >> united may have been right, legally, but morally it's hard to make a case for the way this man was treated. and, people are expressing their outrage. >> look what you did to him? >> demanding a paying customer give up a seat is perfectly legal. >> it's part of a document that nobody looks at called the contract of carriage, which gives the airlines, pilot. flight attendant rights to pretty much do what they want.

months. in san bernardino, california. convicted charleston church shooter dylann roof pleaded guilty to nine counts of murder. that plea settled state charges in connection with the 2015 shooting spree. roof was given nine consecutive life sentences in that case. but, he had already been convicted and sentenced to death earlier this year in a federal case. he is now awaiting execution in federal prison. >> in chicago, a desperate manhunt underway for a suspect fatally shot a judge outside his home. a woman was shot in the leg as she was leaving that home of judge raymond miles. police say the judge heard a commotion. went outside to investigate. the judge exchange the word with the suspect and was shot multiple times. police say the shooting was likely a botched robbery and not a targeted attack on the judge. that woman is expected to be okay. >> tesla, company worth soared to $51 billion, edging past general motors. the company well open trading this morning above, $2312 per

i could not believe what i was seeing or hearing. i was in, i was in shock. >> united airlines told passengers the flight was overbooked now says it was a crew transport issue. four seats needed to get a crew from chicago to louisville. $800 in vouchers offered. no takers. so, united computer picked four passengers including the 69-year-old man who said he was a doctor and had patients to treat. >> come on. >> the man slipped back on to the jet. >> i have to go home. i have to go home. before he was removed again. united ceo calls it an upsetting event. and, apologizes for having to reaccommodate these customers. but no direct apology to the man. the overbooking, even demanding a paying customer to give up a seat is legal. >> part of a document nobody looks at, contract of carriage which gives basically the airlines, pilot, flight attendant rights to do what they want. >> even after boarding an airline can ask a passenger to leave the aircraft. passenger do's have rights and are due compensation. the department of transportation wants to make sure this passenger's rights were honored in this case. david kerley, abc news, reagan national airport. >> you offer me the voucher, gone. $800 voucher.

her fox trot got a 9 from len who said she is now a front-runner. >> yeah, a tough battle. she talked about it. then there were simone biles started her dance crying. and ended bawling. most memorable year got adopted by her grandparents. judges loved her waltz gave her the second highest score of the season. her grandparents were there. she received her scores and everybody in tears. >> such a beautiful story. you got to see that all throughout the olympics. she would talk about them constantly. always there watching her. >> meanwhile, lightened things up for those who needed laughs. his most memorable year, 2017. because, well, that was his time as the the bachelor. so, he performed a rumba. he was shirtless for most of the dance. got his best score of the season. what say you, bachelor analyst? >> let's move along.
