airlines sent out a news statement apologizing to the customer promising a thorough review. 86 million passengers, united denied boarding to 3700 people because of overbooking. more than 60,000 voluntarily gave up their seats. kenneth moat en, abc news new york. >> today new jersey governor chris christie asked elaine chao to suspend regulation which allows airlines to overbook flights and to remove passengers. christie specifically cited the incident involving david dao as the reason. > the question from united is how do they recover from what is a huge public relations disaster? >> kristen sze is here with more. >> the hashtag continues to go viral today. take a look at some of the memes out there. southwest, we beat our competitors, not you. how about this one. if we cannot beat our competitors, we beat our customers. others are posting pictures of the cut up frequent flyer card.

take a look at this, because even white house secretary sean spicer is weighing in and criticizing united. >> clearly watching another human being dragged down an aisle, watching, you know, blood come from their face after hitting an arm rest or whatever, i don't think there is a circumstance that you can sit back and say this could have been handled a little better when you're talking about another human being. >> so, how does united overcome this barrage of negative publicity? well, we talked with saint mary's college marketing professor tomas gomez ariaz. >> it takes time to create and destroy very quickly. united has to say how they interact with their customers in general. >> reporter: well, perhaps united ceo got the same advice. he issued a second apology this afternoon that says, i'm sorry, we will fix this. but the question is, is it enough? comedian joe wong is one of many

a live look now for the mount tamme camera. you can see there are a few raindrops on the lens. spencer christian with a look at our forecast and what we can expect the next few days. spencer? >> it is dreary in other locations as it is up in mount tamme, breezier and rainier. you can see we have pockets of light scattered showers. very, very light rainfall now moving through the golden gate into san francisco across the bay toward oakland down into the peninsula a little bit. again, that green is very steady. the storm ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. producing light showers. up to a 10 th of an inch of rainfall. here is a forecast showing in the early evening hours of 7:00 or so we see steadier rain through the bay area. during the nighttime hours midnight, overnight we'll see light scattered showers into the mid-morning hours tomorrow. there is another stronger storm coming our way. this one is going to bring a bit more rain, more energy.

a stronger gust with it. i'll give you a closer look at that and what you can expect from it in just a few minutes. alma? >> thank you. you can track the storm with the abc 7 news app doppler 7 on the app. you can get advisory on your phone or tablet. >> santa clara families woke up with a sound of splash and cries for help. police found this. a car in a swimming pool and a young driver standing nearby. this happened on war burr ton avenue. a job of extracting the car poses a big challenge. david? >> reporter: what a job it was, larry. you can see some repairs to a fence. that's where the car smashed through. that's the worst of the physical damage. now, that's where a teenager did say he fell asleep while he was driving just before 3:00 this morning. police say he did pass a sobriety test. this 19-year-old wrapped in a blanket was driving home when he suddenly found himself and his

mother's car submerged in a neighbor's backyard swimming pool. he told me he had just dropped off a friend and was alone in the car. he told santa clara police how he escaped. >> he was able to free himself. i think when the car went in, it didn't sink right away so he was able to open the door and get himself out. >> the driver's mother was grateful he was not injured. >> he was taking his friend home and he was too late. he was too tired. >> reporter: does he remember anything about wlapd? >> yes. >> reporter: the tran family was not home when the accident happened at 2:48 a.m. neighbors heard a splash and cries for help. the car sank at the deep end of the pool. the driver avoided striking a tree and the two-story house, but there was some property damage. >> the person went through two fences before landing in a pool. it's kind of shocking. >> reporter: police thought initially it would take a construction crane to extract the four-door sedan. however, two operators were able to fasten cables to the frame

and fish it out of the water in an hour and 15 minutes. >> it's a miracle that he's standing over there and not injured. >> amazing how the tow truck operators were able to get the car out. >> they did an amazing job. >> reporter: the national sleep foundation says drowsy driving causes 100,000 crashes a year. 50% of them caused by drivers under 25. 18 hours without sleep is the equivalent of driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.8%. the level set as legally drunk. in santa clara, david louie, abc 7 news. >> new at 4:00, the alameda county coroner say 24 year old perez ran from officers in a traffic stop. the coroner says he fatally shot himself in the head. investigators originally believe he had struck and killed by officers who returned fire. no one else was hurtd in the shooting. >> a sacramento police officer

has been placed on administrative leave after doing this. that is throwing a jay walker to the ground and hitting him in the face multiple times. that incident was kault on camera yesterday. they say they tried to stop the man illegally crossing the street, but the subject just walked away. the two men argued and police say the pedestrian challenged the officer to a fight. the department says the actions appear to show unacceptable conduct. >> a mail delivery truck caught fire today in oakland. the witness posted this video on social media and shared it with abc 7 news. the fire started this morning in the engine area and the driver was able to pullover on 580. post office says letters and packages for delivery in oakland were damaged in the fire at sundown, how much was destroyed. >> the city of san jose is investigating traffic signals to potentially save lives. >> first responders struggled to reach emergencies in the required amount of time. this could change and make things better. abc 7 reporter joins us live from san jose city hall with this story.

jeannine. >> reporter: alma, fire engines and trucks and ambulances, they always have to deal with red lights and having to navigate through traffic. but this new technology will make the lights turn green for them. in an emergency, minutes and seconds count. in san jose, fire fighters are required to arrive in a emergency within 8 minutes 90% of the time. for the last several years the department has not been consistently meeting that goal. right now 2 minutes are given to process the call, two minutes for getting into fire gear, and four minutes are used for travel time. >> we know that we've been saddled as the city grows and as traffic gets tougher, as the good sign is people are back to work and people are going to work. we see more cars on the road. that really impacts that ability for us to travel the distance we need to travel during those four minutes. >> city officials believe manipulating traffic signals will help emergency responders. currently just one-third of the traffic lights use technology to turn red lights green for first

responders. this afternoon the city council voted to go forward in upgrading the system so all traffic lights will be able to do that. >> what we want is preidentified for the fire truck to follow and signals that are in the way will be automatically preempted for the fire truck and surrounding traffic can move through the system. >> the upgrade will cost $600,000. they are encouraged the city is investing in the system. >> we anticipate sort of rough numbers when we look at it, if we save 30 seconds on travel on some of the longer responses, that's a technology change that will affect us and be change till the end of time for us. >> reporter: but the fire department says it won't solve the problem entirely. as the city grows in population, there will be a need to add more fire stations. in san jose, jeannine de la vega, abc 7 news. >> lots of people love in and out burgers, right? probably the most visit list for your out of town family and friends. not everybody in the bay area

to their homes. >> i'm familiar with that line behind me, by the way. a proposed site at main street and second avenue is where abc 7 news reporter joins us live with a look at some of the concerns. laura? >> reporter: hi, larry. first of all let's show you where the restaurant is supposed to go. right across the street there on that lot there. the big issue for folks who live in the neighborhood behind that lot is this. check out the traffic. 4:00 in the afternoon, this is pretty typical in this area. the folks who live near here are concerned that an in and out will only make this situation worse. >> as you can see, there is already the commercial property that is in existence here that's been left by the former company. >> reporter: dan angus lives on a quiet cul-de-sac in walnut creek. the old industrial building is unsightly, he and his family worry more about what is being proposed to replace it. >> right now they're planning to put a combined in-and-out plus a starbucks drive through in addition to some other properties. >> reporter: and while angus and

his neighbors say they like in-n-out burgers as much as anyone else, they don't want one and all the traffic that comes with it so close to their homes. >> it's just in the application stage. >> reporter: sandra meyers walnut creek economic director. meyers says the public will have several opportunities to voice their concerns. >> in this case, this will probably go through at least four public hearings. >> reporter: those hearings will be scheduled after traffic, noise and other impact studies are completed. >> we actually thought of a hardware store or retail outlet that serves the community. >> reporter: in 2013 in-n-out pulled its application to put a second store in public hill after strong neighborhood opposition. in walnut creek, laura anthony, abc 7 news. >> u.c. berkeley are deep nipping their relationship to help students in need. the hemery ville coffee company is offering paid student internships, jobs for graduates and scholarships.

they sold products on the u.c. campus for the last decade. cal has seen the state investment dwindle to just 13%. the university has thought to broaden public private partnerships with local companies to make up the shortfall. >> do you like salmon? salmon fishing season is going to be extremely limited this year. the announcement just made today by federal officials. right now there are historicall salmon in the oklahoma city. while they blame the impact the drought had on california rivers and el nino had on ocean food sources, recreational fishing opened in the bay area april 1st, but will close foreseveral weeks in may and commercial fishing will only be open for most of august and all of september. fishing groups plan to ask the governor to declare a disaster so they can seek federal aid. >> today attorney general jeff sessions unveiled what he described as the new get tough approach to immigration prosecutions under trump. sessions announced the changes in arizona after a tour along the mexico border. he is calling on federal

procuteers saying more undocumented migrant should be prosecute as criminals. critics blasted the initiatives as fear mongering and antiimmigrant rhetoric not rooted in facts. a party-like protest outside a richmond jail today, it marked the arrival in the bay area of a caravan traveling across the state in protest to president trump's immigration policy. the group is supported sb 54, the state sanctuary bill now before lawmakers in sacramento. >> it's the only way that this deportations will stop. that's the only way that muslim ban will no longer be a muslim ban. and we're saying that everyone needs to come out on the streets. >> the group is also involved in organizing immigration policy protests that they say will be held across the nation on may 1st. the contra costa county sheriff tells abc 7 his department follows the state's trust act that opposes sb 54 saying the bill could compromise public safety.

downpour. this is a picture now, you can see the bulk of the light rain falling at the moment is right in the center -- in the central part of the bay area between san rafael and san francisco and san mateo and it is going to continue fushing eastward over to the east bay. even as we talk or as i talk. here is a look at our current temperature readings. half moon bay, low to mid 60s the bay area. these are our forecast pictures. light showers overnight vlgs, showers and downpours friday night and saturday. storm impact 1 on the scale. it will continue producing light showers into tomorrow. along with a bit of a breeze. overnight we'll see low temperatures generally in the low to mid 60s -- low to mid 50s, i beg your pardon. so, it will be pretty mild overnight. then tomorrow afternoon we'll see low to mid 60s for much of the bay area. that takes us to storm 2 which takes us into late tomorrow.

it also ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. it will have more umph. rainfall will range from 2/10 to 8 /10 of an inch. it starts at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow. looking at the forecast animation, by 7:00 tomorrow night we'll see a wave or a line, a rather steady rainfall, some of it quite heavy sweeping through the bay area. and then it will push on out of here rather quickly 11:00 or midnight tomorrow night. that will be followed by some trailing scattered showers into thursday morning and these showers will sort of wind down as we get later into the day on thursday. looking ahead to about noon on thursday, we project rainfall totals will range anywhere from about a quarter of an inch in the south bay, san jose up to mountain view to over half an inch in many other locations over in the east oakland, just over half an inch in the north bay we expect over half an inch in some locations also. and down at ben loem en,

all right. got a bunch of sports news right now. we start with this which is not good news. the giants will be without their all-star catcher one day after he took a 94 mile an hour fast ball to the helmet. arizona diamond backs pitcher taiwan watcher drove posy during the first pitch. giants won the game but they lose posy. giants post posy on the 7-day disabled list with concussion symptoms which he started experiencing even though he apparently passed the initial concussion tests. on to the warriors, steph curry is not going to win the mvp for the third straight year. doesn't mean he's not any less popular with fans. curry's number 30 jersey is the most popular for the second consecutive year. the warriors also ranked number one in merchandise sold. rankings are based on nba store.com sales after the 2016-2017 season. watching the dance while i'm talking. kevin durant ranked third behind

chicago is being treated at the hospital now. his family has retained attorneys, but has made no announcement about a possible lawsuit. today the ceo of united called that confrontation truly horrific and offered an apology, but he's been criticized for two previous statements in which he called the passenger disruptive and belligerent. shares of united fell by 4% today and during the trading day the company's market value briefly lost nearly a billion dollars before regaining much of that loss. abc 7 news reporter david louie tweeted video of a car being removed from a santa clara pool. police said the driver fell asleep, plowed right through two fences before reaching the water. thankfully, though, nobody was hurt. abc 7 news reporter tweeting a picture of a 911 dispatcher being honored by the city. coming up tonight at 6:00 why they're recognizing her work on the night an officer was shot in the head. today we are learning more about an estranged couple and an 8-year-old student caught in the cross fire of a murder suicide. the elementary school where it happened will remain closed.

abc news reporter is live in san bernardino with the latest. danya? >> reporter: larry, karen smith's mother said is he trick anderson was on the dark side shortly after the two married. she said smith left him three weeks ago and never informed the school of marital problems. this afternoon questions are mountsing what led to the shooting that took the life of an 8-year-old boy described as vibrant and joyful. a memorial is growing outside of north park elementary school a day after a murder suicide inside the school. cedric anderson targeted his estranged wife as she was teaching. firing ten rounds in the classroom, at one point reloading his gun. >> i'm sure it was absolutely terrifying for the kids that were in there. >> reporter: 8-year-old jonathan martinez was one of two students caught in the cross fire. he did not survive. the other student, a 9-year-old, is now recovering. >> he is in relatively good

spirits. >> reporter: the couple? >> she makes me really happy. she knows when to ignore me. that makes a happy marriage. >> reporter: married this past january after years of dating, smith's mother says things were good at first. >> you need to get away from him. he is not the person you thought he was. >> reporter: the couple separated in march. anderson's past includes accusations of domestic violence, weapons and drug charges but no convictions. there is still no indication why he targeted his wife. >> it appears he had been making efforts to contact her and have her come back home and she was resistant to that. >> reporter: authorities say school security measures were followed. cameras actually caught anderson trying to go through locked door of the school first forcing him to go through the front office. since he was known by staff there, he was not escorted to the classroom. larry? >> tanya, did the shooter leave a suicide note or any indication

he was planning to harm his wife? >> reporter: authorities say he did not need a suicide note. however, they did say are that they searched his home and they did find a noelt where he wrote about things in his life that needed closure and feeling disrespected. outside of the shooting, it did not raise any red flags. >> all right. thank you. danya back us, live in l.a. >> a bus carrying german soccer players to a quarterfinal match was hit by three explosions today. the blast targeted members of the soccer team from the northwestern part of the country. one player was taken to the hospital with an arm and hand injury. the team was preparing to leave the hotel for a match against monaco when the blast went off. it shuttered windows on the bus and tires. police found a letter claiming responsibility, but investigators haven't revealed who wrote it. the man suspected of killing four people and wounding 15 others after ramming a stolen beer truck in a crowd in

stockholm sweden last week has confessed to the crime. that is according to the lawyer representing the 39-year-old suspect. the uzbek national made a court appearance today. suspect was known to police by had no ties to extremism prior to last friday's attack. >> now to the growing tensions between the u.s. and russia, secretary of state rex tillerson delivered an ultimatum today saying russia can either stand by the assad regime or join the u.s. in ending the violence in syria. here is abc news reporter. >> reporter: a war of words between the united states and russia. >> russia has really aligned itself with the assad regime, the iranians and hezbollah. we want to create a future for syria that is stable and secure. and, so, russia can be a part of that future. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson drawing a line in the sand over russia's support of syria.

the intelligence community. jeannine norman, abc news, washington. >> president trump sent ape warning to china about north korea via twitter. in the first of two tweets, the president wrote, north korea is looking for trouble. if china decides to help, that would be great. if not, we will solve the problem without them. in another tweet he added, i explained to the president of china that a trade deal with the u.s. will be far better for them if they solve the north korean problem. the pentagon has deployed the uss. carl vinson aircraft carrier and others to the region after the missile test last week. >> whether it comes to a smash-and-grab burglaries, thent don't get as brazen as what you see. barrelling through a gun store in a stolen pickup truck. they use hammers to break into display cases. they grab as many guns as fast as they can. they were in and out in 31 seconds. this was the latest in a series of burglaries in the tampa area in recent months.

atmosphere. >> that's quite a mission. scientists say the effects of climate change are being seen on australia's great barrier we've. an aerial survey shows two-thirds of the reef has been damaged by coral bleaching. we're talking about 900 miles or so. the survey comes from a group called the arc center of excellence for coral reef studies. it's the second straight year of coral bleaching. last year it was blamed partly on el nino. this year it is a result of record high temperatures from global warming. >> announcer: now your accuweather forecast with spencer christian. >> okay. we'll start with live doppler 7 showing light scattered showers moving through the bay area right now. sort of sweeping northwest to southeast. the storm that we have for this evening and early tomorrow ranks 1 on the storm impact scale. storm of light intensity. we'll continue to see light showers moving through the area with probably up to an tenth of an inch. second storm comes in tomorrow afternoon into thursday morning. it will also rank 1 on the impact scale but it will be a little bit stronger than the

the national park service is waving entrance fees into 118 national parks this coming weekend and the next. the park service is celebrating its 100th anniversary. it includes the woods, and yo might which is usually $30 if you're driving a car. abc news reporter ruben contreras tells us what you need to know before you visit the park. >> reporter: after nearly five years of drought, water is flowing again in the creeks and falls of yosemite national park. >> as folks know, it's been a great winter. we've had record snow packs, the water falls are great. they're just starting to get

great. >> reporter: scott is with the national park service. he says yosemite had over 5 million visitors last year. he expects that again this year. spring break marks the beginning of a busy tourist season that runs through the summer. >> our best advice for people coming to the park right now is on the roads is to just drive slow, be aware of your surroundings, give yourself plenty of time and be careful. >> reporter: but the increase of traffic, limited parking and several construction projects are not stopping visitors from across the country from seeing the beautiful scenery yosemite has to offer. >> we want to drive into some pretty high peaks and water falls. it's all right there for you. >> reporter: he expects bigger crowds when the $30 entrance fee is waived for visitors during the next two weekends. >> these are good for the day. so, folks can come in. they don't have to pay the park entrance fee. if you're camping, you still have to pay that fee and other fees, but the fee-free weekends are a great way for people to come up.

>> reporter: entrance fees for the park will be waived april 15th and 16th and 22nd and 23rd. reporting at yosemite national park, ruben contreras abc 7 news. >> a popular spot to watch military jets could become an official spot. that spot is located in a narrow gorge, rainbow canyon in southern california's death valley national park. it has been named "star wars" canyon. we'll show you why. the terrain resemble's luke skyy walker's home. it was shot on the park's east side. the air space above the canyon is also a designated training area for military pilots all over the world. they often fly right through the canyon. the park service is considering installing informational signs about training that dates all the way back to world war ii. >> a kitche appliance company is recalling thousands of garbage disposals that could be dangerous to use.

>> yeah, abc 7, 7 on your side michael finney has the bad news and more. >> you always keep your hands away from a disposal, but these ones are dangerous because pieces can come flying out. the anaheim manufacturing company is recalling 146,000 garbage disposals that might cause injury. the company says metal pieces inside the disposals may f f f f while grinding. there are no reports of injuries. the recall includes ten brand name disposals sold from december 2015 until march of this year. i posted the entire list on my facebook page along with the information on how you can get a free replacement. california has hit an important milestone reaching its green energy goals. listen to this. for three hours in march, solar panels applied roughly half the state's electricity needs. that set a record. the state has set a goal for

getting half its energy, i should say electricity, from renewable sources by the year 2030. california met the goal for that three-hour period on march 11, though it was temporary, experts say it might happen again. the u.s. department of energy said 40% of the energy came from solar farms. the rest came from rooftop solar at homes and businesses. popcorn and milk duds may be the classic movie theater snack. one chain is betting a whole meal when you sit there. they will offer a fuller menu at its 400 theaters, i should say, beginning this summer. the movie chain said it's been testing foods that are easy to eat in the dark and won't stink up the theater. the new feature fare will include cheese burger sliders, curry fries, flatbed pizza and salami with toast point. popcorn will come in flavors

good evening i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm kristen sze, thanks for joining us. after a dangerous and illegal joy ride through san francisco, the chp arrested dirt biker and is now looking for the rest of his group. new at 5:00, abc 7 news reporter joins us live in san francisco with the battle against this growing problem. kate? >> reporter: you know, dan, kristen, it's not only safe for officers to pursue dirt bikers through city streets often, these bikers ride up on sidewalks through groups of people or speed through traffic. law enforcement has a powerful tool that they are going to be using more and more, and this past weekend it helped the chp make a big arrest. for more than a year, dirt bike and atv riders have been terrorizing bay area roadways. this cell phone video shows bikers popping wheelies on the bay bridge a few weeks ago and this video from march shows a dozen or so men
