fight against sanctuary cities. >> reporter: almost every threat the president made about withholding federal monies from sanctuary cities those who refused to help round up undocumented immigrants, justice department lawyers downplayed those threats when confronted in court. a handful of protesters were at the federal court house in san francisco today criticizing the trump administration for threatening the federal money that san francisco and santa clara county depend on. >> it's an attempt to bully san francisco and santa clara into abandoning their sanctuary city policies by the use of an unconstitutional executive order. >> we have 35% of our revenue at stake as federal revenue, four to $5 million a day that we are relying on the expectation and reimbursement from the federal government. >> reporter: attorneys for san francisco and santa clara countys were in covert today seeking an injunction to block the executive order.

they say they stand to lose more than a billion dollars in federal money each. but assistant attorney general chad reidler made a completely different argument in court. h said the executive order was narrowly focused and would affect grants from the justice department and homeland security. almost a million dollar for santa clara county and no money at all for san francisco. government attorneys would not go on camera, but u.c. hastings law professor says the feds are walking a fine line. >> and the justice department seemed to be saying, well, we're not doing anything to them right now. so, what's the need for any litigation now? we're all friends. >> these are contradictory statements not only in a court of law, but in terms of continuing to confuse the public. >> reporter: now, another surprising argument made in court by the feds, they said that legally san francisco and santa clara countys aren't sanctuary jurisdictions yet

because the executive order doesn't define what exactly that is. that's despite the fact that in his speeches, the president and attorney general referred to sanctuary cities by name. san francisco and santa clara county. so, a ruling on this injunction request should come next week. in the newsroom, eric thomas, abc 7 news. >> we'll see you, eric. thanks very much. for the second time in five weeks a group that describes itself as pro trump is holding a rally in downtown berkeley. the last time back in march a similar event led to violent confrontations with counter demonstrators and ten arrests. abc 7 news reporter laura anthony is in berkeley civic park with the story. laura. >> reporter: well, hi, dan. this park is all quiet now, but tomorrow it could be a different story. the farmers market has been canceled and the city is on high alert. it turned ugly in a matter of minutes last month at berkeley civic park when participants in a pro-trump rally clashed with a

group of counter demonstrators. and now a similar event is set for saturday, same place, likely some of the same participants. >> we're going to make sure that we facilitate the expression of free speech in a peaceful way. >> reporter: a spokesman for the city of berkeley which had officers surrounding the park last time, but with very little direct intervention. >> people commit violent acts often do so under the cover of a peaceful crowd. so, what we want people to do who are coming for peaceful purposes is to separate themselves and not get provoked. >> reporter: some businesses like this mechanics bank are not taking any chances, boarding up ahead of time. >> the hope for us tomorrow is that this rally is obviously very peaceful, but it's contained to the park and cooler heads prevail. >> funny enough, i'm actually not a trump supporter. >> reporter: we couldn't reach rich black with the group

liberty alliance. but we did talk with counter protesters. >> they support trump's hard line on immigration, but they want to take it much, much further including attack being our communities. >> reporter: in march police made ten arrests and shared photos of those they believe responsible for some of the violence. in berkeley, laura anthony abc 7 news. >> police hope a $2,500 award will lead to an arrest of a man accused of sex crimes. he vanished in the middle of a trial last month. they released these pictures of the 36-year-old chiropractor showing four different looks. police say he failed to show up the last two days of his trial. he was found guilty of six felonies, six misdemeanors, and now there is a warrant for his arrest. >> in san mateo a court has just decided a man accused of killing a dog with boiling hot water will be able to live with pets as long as he doesn't care for them. he is out on bail after two

felonies in the death of his girlfriend's poodle mix. last year the couple brought this dog to a clinic after claiming a cup of boiling water spilled onto the crate. they believe the dog was placed into burning hot liquid. the dog died from third degree burns. >> in san jose, a gas leak forced the evacuation of a building on park avenue near sunol street. officials tell abc 7 news a propane tank was the source of a leak. the leak was capped and the all clear was given around 9:15 this morning. >> let's turn your attention to the weather. what a beautiful friday, right. this is a live look from mount tamme camera. >> it's nice but more rain is on the way. spencer christian is here with the weekend forecast. spencer. >> the weekend will get off to a sunny start, it just won't have a sunny finish. it is certainly sunny now, mild across the bay area. this is the view from our sutro tower camera looking out over san francisco. here is your evening planner if you're going to be out and

about. you'll see sunny skies. 7:45 when the sun sets. it will be relatively mild. temperatures in the bay will be in the upper 50s at 7:00 p.m. skies will remain clear through the entire evening but by 10:00 tonight it will be turning chilly with temperatures dropping into the 40s. let's skip ahead to easter now. sunday will bring our next storm. it will be a storm of light intensity ranking 1 on the storm impact scale producing light rain. less than a quarte of an inch to fall on most areas. it will be breezy at the coast. forecast animation starting at 6:00 a.m. sunday rather, by 9:00 a.m. we'll see rain pushing into the north bay. by 10:00 a.m. we'll be reaching most parts of the bay area. and it will pretty much blanket the bay area by about noon. this is mainly light rain, although there could be periods of moderate rainfall mixed in there and we'll see it beginning to taper off by sunday evening. i'll give you a closer look at that storm and the 7 days ahead in just a few minutes. dan? >> okay, spencer, thanks very much. a crews are working to clear mudslide blocking the eastbound

lane along redwood road in the oakland hills. the slide covers about 40 feet of the roadway between sky line boulevard and pine hearst road. officials have not said when the debris will be cleared. >> the park near livermore is identifiably set to reopen tomorrow after flood damage closed park for months. rain flooded beaches, campground and picnic areas, officials say the glooding caused nearly $2 million in damage. overall there was $10 million in damage to bay area parks. >> and a lot of people will be spending this easter weekend enjoying the bountiful snow in the sierra. it's the middle as you know, parts of the state are still getting fresh powder. in the last 48 hours, north star has seen more than 17 inches of snow. they sent us this new video. cal trans is warning drivers headed to the sierra to go prepared and expect slippery driving conditions. >> right now ten degrees, slick as buttered glass. stay off the brakes, you're going to be fine. >> no chain restrictions are in effect for either 80 or 50.

now, cal trans is telling drivers pack them anyway just in case those restrictions go into effect. >> there may be a lot of snow, but it's also been hot across the globe. nasa says this march was the second warm est since modern record keeping was established more than a century ago. the warm est march was last year. nasa says this past february was the second warm est february on record and this past january was the third warm est january. >> a conservative legal group wants the california supreme court to strike down a key component of california's effort to combat climate change. today the pacific league of foundation said it will appeal a court ruling that says state regulators can auction permits for companies to release greenhouse gases. the foundation says the auctions are an illegal tax. >> it's now been 24 hours since the city of oakland's website domain name expired and some people are still having problems getting onto the page. the city's domain name expired yesterday. anyone getting on the site got an advertisement or error

message. a city spokeswoman said the domain name has been renewed but some people may have problems. she said it takes time for all the servers across the internet to update. >> all right. bay area golden state warriors fans are proudly wearing their favorite team's colors. that's because the mayors of oakland, san francisco, and san jose declared it blue and gold day in honor of the team's fifth straight playoff appearance. san francisco land marks will also be lit up in blue and gold tonight to show su mort for the team. abc 7 news was in oakland today as the warriors practiced before the start of the playoffs this weekend. they're going to host the portland trail blazers in game one sunday at 12:30. >> well, if you don't have tickets to the game, abc 7 is the only place to watch live from oracle arena. coverage of the game begins at noon. >> 10-year-old bone cancer survivor got free tickets to the playoff game thanks to a special invitation from the warriors. abc 7 news this week featured the sacramento boy's story. maybe you've seen it. doctors at stanford's lieu seal

new details today about the passenger dragged off the united airlines flight over the weekend. >> oh, my god. >> it is that piece of video seen around the world and now where justice and equality group is accusing united airlines of racial discrimination. the passenger is a vietnamese american doctor. >> abc 7 reporter lyanne melendez is live with the story. lyanne. >> reporter: well, you know,

passenger's lawyer was among the first to say that the incident was racially motivated. others are also claiming the same. united has now responded to those allegations. china and most recently vietnam have now expressed their outrage over the video seen all over the world showing a passenger being forcefully dragged off the plane. today frank lee of the organization for justice and equality based in the bay area followed by making this statement. >> we should boycott united airlines to teach them a lesson. >> reporter: invited to the press conference was the san francisco community empowerment center, another asian group that criticized united for its actions. of. >> he is an asian and i feel that, you know, this is very suspicious that it might be racial discrimination. >> reporter: the passenger david dao is vit dynamically ease. while we still don't know the identities of the other three passengers who were asked to get

off that flight, we've also learned a passenger on board a united flight from hawaii was asked to give up his seat and was mistreated. he is caucasian, which made this group of advocates back down. >> there is no conclusive evidence that this is a case of racial discrimination. >> reporter: instead, the group focused on demanding that united disclose its criteria for removing passengers, something the airline has never done. edward has brook is an aviation expert who gave us an idea of who may get to stay and who gets bumped. >> the fare they paid and their status in the airline's frequent flyer program, but they don't say what weight would be given to those different factors. >> reporter: minority groups like these are asking the airline industry for more transparency. in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. >> well, meantime delta is taking drastic steps to avoid something like the united debacle happening on that carrier. the airline is giving airport employees permission to offer passengers up to almost $10,000

in compensation to give up their seats on overbooked flights. in an internal memo obtained by the associated press, delta says supervisors can offer up to 10 grand, that's up from about $1,300. gate agents can offer up to $2,000. >> it looks like the eye card may not be too far down the road. an update shows apple received a permit to test self-driving cars in california. it is the first confirmation they are working on developing an autonomous vehicle. apple has what appears to be a mostly separate organization of a thousand employees, what it calls project tight an in sunnyvale and other satellite offices. 29 companies have been approved for testing the vehicles in california. if you'd like to see the complete list of those companies with approval, go to abc 7 news.com. and this comes just one day after general motors announced plans to hire 1100 people to work at its new research and development facility in the bay area. the california economic

clear skies across the bay area now, relatively mild conditions. this is the view from our rooftop camera look out across the embarcadero. 60 degrees in san francisco. we have mid 60s in satisfy, oakland, gilroy, half moon bay. check out this view. you can't see a thing there. it was supposed to be the view from mount tamme, but i guess cameras are being adjusted right now. temperatures are in the mid 60s in santa rosa, novato, napa, fairfield, concord and livermore. no, you don't have to adjust r your glasses. this is our view eastward. cool conditions tomorrow. rain returns on easter which is sunday. and we'll have unsettled weather into next week. overnight look for clear skies and chilly conditions in some of the inland valley locations. we'll see those dropping into the upper 30s in the north bay valley, low 40s in most inland valleys and mid 40s generally around the bay. and then tomorrow mainly sunny

skies, hayes as high clouds move in. that won't prevent it from getting mild tomorrow. high tempertures inland in the low 70s in many locations right around the bay we'll see upper 60s to near 70. breezy at the coast relatively pleasant with high temperatures in the low 60s. that takes us to the storm impact -- oops, almost hopped on me. storm impact scale indicating that our storm coming in on sunday ranks 1 on the impact scale. a storm of light intensity. i better move out of the way while he's still hopping there. we'll see light rape fall less than a quarter of an inch in most locations. it will be breezy at the coast. as we look at our bay planne for sunday, it will be cloudy in the early morning service, sunrise. dry at 7:00 in the morning. showers will arrive by noon. we'll see steadier light rain by 4:00 p.m. and it will be tapering off to sprinkles by 7:00 p.m. our forecast animation shows that rain totals for the day on sunday will probably range anywhere from only a few

to the fire. north korea's vice foreign minister said washington has become more vicious and more aggressive since trump took office. all of this as satellite images show a north korean nuclear test site primed and ready. >> north korea has got to change its behavior. >> reporter: ahead of that test that could come this weekend, questions over what message dropping that massive bomb in eastern afghanistan sends to north korea. that massive air blast, nicknamed the mother of all bombs, weighs 22,000 pounds and is the largest nonnuclear bomb the u.s. has dropped in combat, part of the ongoing fight against isis. >> we will remove the sanctuary in afghanistan so fighters may not flow from syria to afghanistan. this weapon was the appropriate weapon to use against this target. and prior to this we didn't have such a target. >> reporter: former iranian president mahmoud ahmadinejad questioning that on twitter

asking, is the person that drops the world's largest bomb on afghanistan a bearer of peace or a demon? and it doesn't appear president trump took any senior staff with him to mar-a-lago. abc news asked which military advisors would accompany trump on the trip to keep him informed troughout the weekend, but the white house wouldn't provide any details. >> and janay, we've been hearing about a u.s. aircraft carrier strike moving into position in the korean peninsula. what can you tell us about that? >> reporter: at this point it is nowhere near the peninsula. it is actually off the coast of australia preparing for an exercise with the australian navy and after that it still will have quite a ways to go from northwestern australia to the korean peninsula. so, a ways away at this point. >> all right, janai norman live in washington. thank you so much. >> facebook is cracking down on fake news in france. with just over a week to go before the french presidential election, the social media site is targeting 30,000 accounts spreading fake news or spam in

france. part of an effort to fight misinformation following the spread of fake news in the lead up to the 2016 u.s. presidential election, the first round of voting in france is set to take place on april 23rd. >> people in wisconsin say they are relieved by the arrest of a man suspected of making threats in a manifesto mailed to president trump. police captured joseph without incident this morning on farmland about 150 miles west of milwaukee. authorities ordered a nationwide manhunt for him about a week ago. tuesday when authorities say he stole 18 firearms from a gun store after mailing his threatening manifesto. >> he gave up peacefully. again, there was an overwhelming force there. i think he understood what he was facing so he gave up peacefully. >> authorities say the 161-page manifesto showed his hatred for religion and a desire to carry out unspecified attacks. local churches had been on heightened alert ahead of the easter services.

>> former new england patriots star aaron hernandez was acquitted of double murder charges today as you see the former tight end wept after the forejury persona announced the verdict. first degree murder in boston south end in 2012, the verdict came after six days of deliberations. hernandez is already serving a life sentence for another murder in 2013. >> six inmates in arkansas by the end of this month are moving forward. >> one execution planned for monday was stopped by the state supreme court just moments ago. it would be the most executions in one state in such a short period of time since the death penalty was reinstated back in 1976. >> abc news reporter has the latest on the controversy. >> we will have blood on our hands if the governor goes through with the executions. >> reporter: state officials say they expedited the execution time line because one of the three lethal injection drugs they plan to use is set to

expire at the end of the month. >> i don't want to go back to these victims' families and say we're worried about how this looks and the speed of this. so, we're not going to be able to carry out the will of the jury and the courts in the sentencing. >> reporter: but along with opposition to the death penalty, concerns are also being raised over the use of the drug that's nearing its expiration date. it is the same sedative that was used in several botched executions in other states. >> effectively the drugs cause possible pain or torture and the person is totally [ inaudible ]. the problem is it has a history of not performing well. >> reporter: two drug manufacturers who claim the state obtained the drugs from unauthorized sellers filed suit trying to block the executions. they are awaiting a ruling with the first two convicted

murderers scheduled to be put to death on monday. this will be the first inmates executed in arkansas since 2005. marcy gonzalez, abc news, los angeles. >> investigators are trying to find the cause of a fire that broke out overnight at the bellagio hotel in las vegas. the fire was located on the roof of a building on the north side of the fountains if you're familiar with the property. the fire chief says there was renovation work underway at the hole tell, but it's unclear if that started the fire or if it started there. the world famous water show at the bellagio went off several times during the fire. no injuries have been reported. >> a toddler in china miraculously survived a scary accident caught on surveillance video. this is hard to watch. a man gets behind the wheel of his car while talking on the cell phone. he didn't see the child there playing in the street right in front of him. oh, the he just knocked the boy down and ran him over. the driver heard the child

they removed the icon and placed it inside a cave. in new york hundreds took part in a way of the cross over the brooklyn bridge and the annual event there. >> well, it turns out that most of us can't resist easter treats, right? this year americans are expected to spend a record $18.4 billion on easter. this includes candy, gifts and food, chocolate. that's a 6% increase from last year according to the national retail federation. it says most people plan to drop about $$150 this easter sunday. an annual easter tradition got underway today in michigan. check this out, 20,000 marshmallows were dropped from a helicopter and hundreds of kids ran to pick them up. no, the children don't necessarily eat them. they trade the marshmallows in for a prize. it is the 33rd year of the marsh malowe drop. >> that's nice. looks like they had decent weather for that there. >> we did.

spencer suggested we do our easter egg hunt on saturday. >> it won't be marshmallows, most likely rain. dry conditions will continue through tomorrow. high clouds will move in, mild with high temperatures in the upper 60s near the bay. we'll see low 70s in our inland areas. and that takes us to sunday which will bring us a little bit of a storm which ranks 1 on the storm impact scale, a storm of light intensity producing light rainfall mainly, but there could be periods of steady rain. we'll see less than a quarter of an inch of rainfall all total for the bay area. it will be breezy at the coast. let's move along and take a look at what is coming next. this is your day planner for easter. early sunday morning we'll see cloudy skies. if you're going to sunrise services, you'll probably go under dry conditions. but light rain will move in, showers by noon. by mid afternoon we'll see widespread light rain. in the evening hours the rain will taper off to a few sprinkles. here's the seven-day forecast.

prices to india if you buy around 100 days in advance. too much earlier than that, and later they go way up. >> good to know. terry from antioch asks this, michael. which fights bacteria best when cleaning carpet, chemicals or steam? >> ah, chemical carpet cleaning and steam cleaning are the popular methods. angie's list.com says both work. steam cleaning uses hot water and detergent so it takes longer for the carpet to dry. you can't go into the room for a long longer period of time. chemical cleaning doesn't use water so it dries quicker. if you go the chemical route, however, and you decide to do it yourself, the environmental protection agency recommends using products -- there is a new label called safer choice. products with that label meet the epa safety standards. only use those. >> okay. all right. and cynthia asked when is the best time to buy a home? >> really depends on where you want to buy your home and how much you want to spend.

at 10:00. well, when you think of dominos as a game, but for a group of high school students in san jose today, they're building blocks for careers in engineering, math and science. the students set out today to set a new state record. abc 7 news reporter david louie shows us whether they succeedsed. >> reporter: you could feel the tension in the room as the deadline approached. six high school students spent three days setting up dominos and fine tuning chain reaction machines they engineered to set a new state record. the idea to challenge them and to inspire young visitors to the children's discovery museum of san jose. over 25,000 dominos were set up in a space theme. each one to be knocked over in a precise sequence. the students walked through the course in stocking feet to prevent an accident. accidents do happen. >> i brushed one and that was on a crack and knocked over about 600. >> reporter: the chain reaction machines have to work every step along the way or doom them to failure. >> sometimes it is failure because it is difficult 20678

thanks for joining us. the women had just left a late night holy thursday mass. >> abc's jeannine de la vega is where this terrible crash happened. jeannine? >> reporter: dan, the crash happened right here on great america parkway. it is next door to our lady of peace church. the highway patrol is calling this crash senseless. these two women that you see in these pictures, a mother and daughter, were leaving our lady of peace in santa clara with their loved ones when a car exiting northbound 101 near great america parkway slammed into their car head on. both ladies were in the back seat and died. chp officers say the driver who hit them was driving drunk. the coroner's office identified the women as 61-year-old corina and her mother is identified as 91-year-old angela both from san jose. the son and brother posted a photo and tribute to them on facebook expressing his devastation. he said
